Does it seem to anyone else that we get about 2 minutes of 'Alone' to 4 minutes of commercials?  Maybe I'm just grumpy.  🙂

Jordan on his pathetic burned out landscape getting 4 rabbits was wonderful!  I like his shelter, and wish we would have seen him build it.  In fact, several of them have nice shelters and we've seen very little building.

Woniya, I hardly know ya.  Nice shelter, again.

I'm glad Nathan recovered from his fish egg incident.

It's too bad Barry lost that fish after 9 days of no protein.  His teepee should keep the snow from building up on it. ??

We finally meet Brady!  Wow, his shelter is quite sturdy, it looks like, and he has blueberries?  What a treat.

Ray sure has a nice fireplace/hearth and shelter.  I might have been chopping onions when he lamented eating his friend.  Ugh, I don't like the sounds of dying animals, though.  I know it's necessary, I just don't like hearing it, you know?

Good on Michelle for her grouse!  I have no idea if the fire is bad, or production is tricking us into thinking it is.

I hit the mute when Ray went to get the squirrel. I didn’t want to hear that poor little thing dying. Ray should feel bad. 😔

I knew Nathan was going to be sick as soon as he ate those eggs out of the dead fish.

How will Jordan preserve all of those rabbits? Drinking the milk from the poor dead mother rabbit was 🤭, IMO.

It seems like "Up in Flames" should be the title of next week's show, not this one.  All we've seen of a fire is a preview.

I could do with a lot less footage of retching.  It seems like they left something out.  The poor guy was weak and sick and also starving but he felt a lot better two days later.  What happened to replace his lost electrolytes and boost his energy?

I wonder how the fellow who caught 4 rabbits kept predators away.

It doesn't surprise me that the rabbits are plentiful in the burned out forest but I think Jordan will need something besides rabbits to make it. I don't know a lot about rabbit-starvation, but the lack of fat makes it hard for your body to cope with the protein or something.

I fell asleep, sounds like I didn’t miss much. I especially do not want to watch animals die. And, the building of each shelter used to be some of the best footage they shared. Did no one bother to record any of that?

I could most certainly be wrong, but I don't think eating any sort of meat leads to a lack of fat.  That's more of a vegetarian/vegan sort of problem.  Certainly there are meats with less fat and meats with more fat, but when one is simply needing food (calories) for a month or two, I doubt if it creates a short-term problem.  He didn't choose a food ration so I guess any food is good.

My problem with Jordan is reading his little blurb on History.com.  Something about it is, I don't know.  Maybe a little embellished?  If not, he's an adrenaline junky, and that's not a bad thing for this show, I guess.  I just don't know how one could accidentally ingest a mouthful of gasoline.  Well, I do, but is that legal??  🤣  Still pulling for him, but skeptical.

Not much that we've seen so far.  Much to my dismay.  Well, they probably did record it, but it wasn't shown.

Maybe so much happened in the latter part of the season that it isn't as exciting as what's to come.  🙄  You know, like puking and rolling around in one's sleeping bag lamenting....everything.

Well, wasn't he the guy who caught the large lake trout right off the bat?  Maybe he wasn't as starving as some.  He is one who chose a food ration so maybe that helped?  I don't know, of course, just hypothesizing.  I'm just wondering what happened to the fish he caught on the show tonight.

I don't think there are many predators around, actually.  Again, this is just me.   Wolves aren't much of a problem.  They are pack animals, and not likely to bust into camp and steal something that they could easily catch on their own...if they're even around his camp.  Bears?  Haven't seen anything suggesting that they're around except for the captions from 'Alone' saying they're in the area.

Now, the wolverine?  That's a nasty critter.  Can't wait to see who has that problem (and apparently deals with it).

Sorry for the multiple posts.  I'm re-watching.   Forgive me.  😁

Watching contestants were using their thigh as a cutting board...gah..

Mr. Squirrel doesn't sit well on your psyche when slathered in guilt and regret, Ray.

Barry told us that as a student of the show he chose to forego a bow/arrow and gambled on fishing and snaring as his primary method to gather food...that is what we want to know...the whys of their gear choices.

Musk ox skull as his door knocker...he should use it as a line of defense if Mr. Bear comes knocking...cut a cord and boom...bear gets a headache....

Jordan licking milk out of Mrs.Rabbit...that was a first...

The barfing and retching was more offensive than the pan of bunny heads with their eyeballs.

Anyone who eats ANYTHING raw out here when they don't have to, I immediately think they must be a dumbass. I know their judgment is probably impaired but geez. It wouldn't have killed the guy to make some kind of egg drop soup or something.

Or purpose the eggs to use as bait instead of slurping/hoovering them up after you bragged that you are a fisheries expert and knew how to massage the eggs out of the fish...

If the fish was alive and kicking then okay eat the eggs but the fish was dead, so no.....Nathan regretfully reports in hindsight....

He got served a big plate of humility...fisheries expert... indeed.

Ray, I liked you.  I did.

But you're not going to convince me that your best friend was the only thing to catch and eat.

No matter how angry he got at him, Tom Hanks did NOT eat Wilson.

Jordan's rabbit head soup was probably delicious.  I liked his monologue about how the animal parts healthiest for us are the ones that look the least appetizing, and the corroborating chyron.  Also he managed not to burn down his shelter while cooking it, always worth extra credit.

He's my favorite as of now, along with Brady (SERE specialists get my respect, that's a hell of a livelihood and he was trained specifically for this.)  If Brady doesn't take this win I think it'll be because something terrible happens.

Michelle had a little fire, then it seemed she extinguished it, then she had a big fire?  Did she accidentally pour gasoline on that sucker?

Nathan: I'm an expert fisherman and basically the Gandalf of fisheries! Watch me massage these eggs out!
(An hour later:  fish eggs try to kill him like Alien facehuggers)

Jordan:  Good bunny catch in the wasteland.  That's a lot to process before it spoils.  The milk drinking was something new.  That head soup looked disgusting.  I'm glad I don't have to eat it.  This is why I go camping in hotels 🙂

Woniya:  Licking the birch tree.  Ok.  Strong shelter is a must.  They all seem to have nice shelters that we didn't see being built.  They're going to need lots of insulation.

Nathan:  Having weird dreams already.  Nice fish.  He seems to be having trouble.  Should not have eaten those raw fish eggs.  He seems to have recovered ok.

Barry:  How did he cut up the can?  Lure works well.  The hook not so much.  He seems obsessed with money.

Brady:  Weird dreams.  Nice crop of blueberries.  Nice ox head.  Good lure fabrication.

Ray:  Interesting trap.  Needs some work.  Good shooting!  The isolation is already getting to him.  You shouldn't get too attached to dinner.

Michelle:  No fish on the barrel, bummer.  Good job snaring the grouse.  Looks like the fire might take her out.  Should have built a nice hearth.

I noticed that there seemed to be some more successful cooking methods employed in this last episode.  I might have been a little nervous about eating rabbit heads, because eating brains can be a bit dicey, but I realized later that since rabbits are herbivores (maybe they eat insects too?) so their brains should be safer than eating carnivore brains.  There does still remain the parasite and bacterial issues, but braising the rabbit bits in the pan and making soup is a good way to make sure everything is cooked thoroughly.

I get that these folks are trying to make good footage for the cameras, so they can get their 15 minutes of fame after their stint in the wilderness is done, and perhaps capitalize on their Alone fame by citing it in advertisements for their survival skills classes and seminars.  Hence the slurpage of rabbit milk and trout eggs....  Which as it turns out, wasn't such a good idea for one of them.  And, while it did kind of gross me out, good use of all your resources, rabbit guy, consuming the high fat milk and eating the quick-to-spoil organ meat and heads right away, while saving the longer-keeping and more easily preserved muscle meat for later.  I did notice it looked like he was smoking the rabbit meat over the fire.  I might have thought cutting it into smaller strips like jerky would smoke and preserve it faster with less risk of leaving a thick part raw while the thinner parts got overdried.

Is anyone else kind of pissed off that the title of this episode was "Up in Flames" and we didn't get even a hint of the fire they've been teasing since day 1 until right at the very end?  That is a bait and switch.  The way this show teases and then repeats half the action after the very frequent commercial breaks, I'm starting to think we're really only getting about 20 minutes of fresh footage for every episode.  Sigh.  But I'm compelled to watch, I really am...

I do have to rewatch the episode to see what happens but I agree that if she used a pine bough to smother the fire, even when green those will go up like flash paper. All of the pine needles provide a huge surface area and once they start on fire they go off like a flare.

I was annoyed. Did we really need to spend all that time listening to that man throw up. Someone in editing thought they were being real cute with the food poisoning fake out since Donny went home because of food poisoning.

The intros for the contestants are very much like the intros for Life Below Zero. For the tone of this show they seem needlessly creepy.

Is Barry the guy who had been homeless and destitute during most of his youth? If so, I can understand his obsession with money, but I don’t think it’s a great business plan to believe that winning Alone will be the only way he and his family will ever have financial security. After taxes, the prize money won’t last very long.

ITA with those that wanted an intro episode to get to know the "campers". Also a quick self interview of what each had planned to build for a shelter, what they perceived as pros and cons of their shelter type, plus a self examination of how they think they did would give us an insight into their survival philosophy. From what I have seen all of the shelters are woefully inadequate if they expect to make it months and into the "real" cold. Having each one tell what items they brought and why would also be interesting to know.

Some thoughts in no particular order;

Jordan: He should be able to smoke the hares into jerky. Catching 4 at once is good but there may not be a whole lot more in the immediate area. Rabbit/hare is very lean with little fat, IIRC without fats and carbohydrates your body will start using up your own fat stores. Basically a rapid weight loss (Atkins/keto) diet. Shelter needs more work.

Woniya: Long term also means having a food source, and yours is ? Licking birch trees does not give you a lot of calories. Glad you can stand up in your shelter because all the heat will be going out the top unless you insulate it by piling brush on top as well as the sides.

Nathan: I would want to puke eating the fish eggs, but I had a buddy that did it from time to time (usually salmon though). So you have some food and your shelter is not bad, should be okay in early winter.

Barry: Good find with the cans and making a lure was good thinking, too bad you lost it, and the fish. You do know that you will need to actually insulate your shelter right? Like it gets cold and from what I saw you only had a tarp. You're the one from Colorado you should know cold.

Brady: Again the shelter looks large and can use more insulation. Glad that you got another trout and that was a nice lure that you made. Good find on the blueberries, gather every single one now. I believe that you are right at the southern range of the musk ox and that's a cool skull. I agree on the fishing over hunting. You might just make it to the end.

Ray: Sucks to be the squirrel. I'm not sure that Ray is emotionally equipped for this if he tears up killing a squirrel so he can survive. Your shelter is however better than most but it could still use more insulation.

Michelle: I'm not sure that Michelle gets the idea of "fishing" versus letting a hook hang in the water from a barrel. Interesting fact - Mullingar Sask had a population of 5 in the 2006 census, in the 2011 census it was down to zero. Searching the 2016 census I don't see any listing for Mullingar at all so I assume that Michelle had moved out permanently. Shelter looks like it will need work due to the FIRE!!

Food first, the running total is 4 hares, 3 trout, 2 squirrels, and a grouse in a spruce tree. Did I miss anything? This is for 8 people in just under 2 weeks. Yikes.

If all of the previews are to be believed there is a moose and a wolverine to be killed yet, and someone (Brady?) may have still been using his net after the edge of the lake froze over.

I do wish that we could see what the people are doing each day, example; how much time spent fishing, hunting, shelter building, foraging, trapping, etc. A chart for each person would be a nice quick reference.

At this time of the year (late September) they should have 11 - 12 hours of daylight so they need to be fishing or hunting 8 hours, and then another 4 - 6 hours working on their shelter.

I'm convinced that none of these people know how to fish. You've got miles of shoreline, fish for 15 minutes, no bites, move, repeat again and again. Same with your gill net. Select 5 - 10 spots, if there's no fish overnight move the net to a new location. You will need to average 1 - 2 fish a day to survive.

Shelters. Barry from Colorado and Michelle from Saskatchewan should have a idea of that the winter will be like - of course I don't expect anyone to last long enough for it to get really cold but I expect that they may see -10C  to -20C temperatures for a few day at the end. They all need to double their insulation, and then probably double it again. Also work on a good fireplace and set-up rocks to reflect heat into your shelters.

A good thing about this time of the year, no bugs!

Almost forgot Nikki. Didn't see her this episode so I'm just hoping that the rescue boat that we saw at the end of the episode made it to her before she bled out from her cut last week. /s

P.S. For those of you that don't know Canada made recreational cannabis legal in October 2018. I believe that Alone started in late August or early September 2018, just wondering if a couple of the campers started early, and does the 30 gram limit count as one item?

There was the muskrat but I don't know if you're counting that as Donny wasn't one of the 8 people, right?

Were both squirrels killed by bow? And the muskrat? if so doesn't that already throw off the statistics about bringing bows to hunt?

Hee.  That made me laugh.  Probably more meat on a grouse than a partridge.  🙂

I felt a bit sorry for Ray.  I get why having another living thing around, a non-threatening one, would be sort of comforting but the squirrel was the only source of protein around and he was starving.  I felt bad watching him feel bad.

I definitely feel like something is missing without the intro. show, plus we are 3 weeks in and still meeting people for the first time?  Seriously?  I feel like I missed several episodes and tuned in only to find them already 10 days in with completely built shelters, etc.

I also think we have our fair share of kooks this season, and people showing spectacularly bad judgment in situations where they in particular should know better.  Even I would know not to eat those fish eggs.  I'm finding this to be a very weird season so far.

@cooksdelight, I fell asleep too, but only missed the squirrel scene.  Judging from what I read here, I'm not unhappy I did.  I only wish I could have missed the retching scene too.

I'm glad the squirrel was dispatched as quickly as possible and off camera but I did NOT need to hear it crying first.

It seems to me that the shelters this season are way less solid than most of those in last season. I'm sure there were a couple of two storey timber homes with ballrooms in previous seasons, ok maybe a slight exaggeration but certainly more solid.

Will this season's fire be last season's wolf?

Boiled bunny brains is a good plan, dead fish eggs not so much.

A raibbit offers you just 750 calories.  You need  2000 calories to just lay around a day in your sleeping bag. out in the cold, damp wind, walking many miles per day, that requirement can easily double. So, if you dont get 3 rabbits per day, every day, you're losing the game. by hunting. Use snares and netting wrapped sapling framed box traps (easily baited/moved) instead of the hunting. sure, keep the slingbow,  arrows and baked clay balls  with you at all times, but specifically hunting all day? no.

no, it's not Fowlers' got a yt vid about the IRS, state taxes and SS taking half of the check. you can also google that info. If you know how to properly invest 200k, it can retire you, after about  3 years of active involvement. What you do is use some vet's VA home loans (no money down required) to buy big old houses, convert them into 8-12 small rooms and rent them out by the week, for $100$300 per week, depending upon where you are. OK  has such houses for sale for 50k. So you can get set up in the first one for 20k or so. After you've lived there in ran it for a year, and know what's what, get another, in 6 months, another, repeat. You can be clearing  100k per year in 3 years.

rabbit offers only 500 calories per lb, ready to eat.. it has almost no fat and yes, you can die  while still eating lots of rabbit meat. The problem is a lack of vitamin k, which is stored only in fat. Just to overcome the calorie needs, you'd have to eat at least 4 rabbits per day, if  you're getting them by hunting with a bow or slingshot. You're out there in the cold all day, stalking 1 mph, which is 8 miles, burning 100 calories per mile. and losing more to the cold. as vs just holing up in your sleeping bag, like Carleigh knew to do in season 3, and she made it 86 days that way.

I believe that Alone started in late August or early September 2018, just wondering if a couple of the campers started early, and does the 30 gram limit count as one item?

actually, a big man needs  2000 calories per day, holed up in his sleeping bag. Out int he cold all day, that need can double. Only half of a fish's live weight is edible flesh and it offers only 650 calories per lb, ready to eat. So the active guy needs to eat 5 lbs of fish per day, which means he has to CATCH  10 lbs of live weight fish, every day, or hel'll be losing weight.  So those fish have to average 7 lbs of live weight, each, if 1-2 per day is going to suffice. 🙂  google it, you'll see that I'm correct.

the shelter means nothing for at least the first month and the best, easiest shelter for the cold is a dugout full of dry debris, which can be made in 3 days, total,  A day to dig the hole and creat the walls out of the excavated dirt. A day to gather the debris and dry it, if need be, a day to gather the wood needed and assemble the sod/debris/wood/tarp roof. and the door, which is made out of the backpack and the camera case, stuffed with debris, with loose earth and debris stuffing the holes around those 2 large items.  Once the foraging time ends, you want to just lay there in the debris, conserving calories and controling your mind.

No need of a fire. The fools who try to heat their 'cabins' with wood will starve out early

A hare is just 1.5 lbs of meat. you can easily eat 2 of them right away and keep the rest in the 5 qt skillet, stewing, and eat it all the next day. Wait, nobody had brains enough to take such a skillet, now did they? They also didn't know to take the 3 lbs of salt, Duh.

these people dont even know that you do NOT want your fire inside of your sleeping shelter? it's a CO hazard in there, as well as a fire hazard.  The fire should be several paces away, with its own primitive shelter, kept dampened, of course. Each sleeve of your rainsuit jacket will hold a gallon of water. One sleeve can be your untreated water, while the other is the boiled or filtered water.  If you use a covered, walled seep well and a  3 ft long filter tube of moss/grasses, gravel, sand and charcoal, you dont have to boil your water,  most places. But I'd boil it if I had the time. make a raised wooden bed, covered with debris, and make a netting and debris "quilt" for covering you while sleeping, have hot rocks under your bed. Use a gravity fed (3 hole) Dakota fire pit for heating stones and you'll need only  1/4 as much firewood, folks. and less than half as much time to process it.

you just want a simple tarp shelter, takes longer to locate a proper spot for it than to set it up. The hammock offers cordage, a bed up off of the ground, lots of netting, once you unravel or cut/tear it into cordage (depending upon whether its a sheet hammock or a rope type. They dont seem to have to be dealing with rain, or as of yet, at least much wind. After a month, if you've fed yourself properly and have preserved at least 100 lbs of live weight food, ok, it's worth losing your day job to stay and to make a winter shelter. If you've not done that much, just go save your day job, cause you'll win only by being fat and lucky. i'd say it's between Ray (because of his fat) and Wonica (cause she's better prepped). having experimented with keto and fasting.

What's up with all the scenes of people puking, heaving, gurgling, and spitting?  Is that supposed to prompt me to watch?

Similarly, I understand they have to kill animals to survive, but that doesn't mean I want to watch (or hear) it on TV presented as entertainment.

I've watched every season of Alone, but seriously if this is the direction the show is headed in, I'm not sure if I'm going to watch another.  I've been trying to cut back on TV anyway, so if a show isn't going to be enjoyable to watch, I don't see the point in keeping it on my schedule.

I haven’t read about jordan but I’ve heard of people ingesting a mouthful of gasolne while siphoning it 🤷‍♀️

no, it's not Fowlers' got a yt vid about the IRS, state taxes and SS taking half of the check. you can also google that info.

No need.  Fowler had back-taxes and debt previously.  So yes, he had to pay that.

Then he posted videos on how he bought a lot of junk to enhance his youtube vids.  Then he posted a pathetic vid of he and his wife buying a 'mansion'.  Note- EVERYBODY runs around pretending that they've never heard of electricity or a dishwasher.

I guess we'll just agree to disagree.  🙂

Yes, that's what I was referring to.  🤣

I've had to siphon gas out of my jeep to get another jeep across the finish line, but um, didn't swallow it.  You can hear it coming up the tube.

Don't know how anyone who is legally siphoning gas is so ignorant that they swallow it.  If one would get that in their mouth, wouldn't they spit it out?  (not being facetious, honestly asking?)

What you do is use some vet's VA home loans (no money down required) to buy big old houses

I don't think that you can 'use some vet's VA home loan'.  😖

The VA loan exists as a benefit to those who have served our country.

If someone else would try to abuse that.....it's fucking disgusting.

I sold several houses with a VA loan when I was a Realtor.  They were all veterans and earned that right.  It would be rather hard to fake all the necessary documents needed.

It seems doubtful that anyone on this episode would even consider doing that.  Brady would kick their ass, for sure.  💜
