I caught portions of it, including the ending, so, I won't render opinion based on that.  But, I did notice that there are some awkward parts with the acting.  Actually, kind of funny.  In the end Cat is walking down a road at night, talking to herself out loud, (very strange) when she hides behind a bush, because she sees Ana coming out of Jake (ex-husband's) house late night. She's so flabbergasted, (yes, she's very demonstrative about that) and that drama is continued. lol

So is it like she's narrating her own telenovela?

She was portraying that she was drunk/ or was drunk in that scene (either way would work) hence the odd behavior. Is she a method actor?

I'm not sure, but, it wasn't very natural to me.  And, I've had my fair share of being around intoxicated people.  lol

I watched the whole episode last night, the first time since ep 1. I didn't listen very well so am not sure of the plot, I was mostly distracted by looking at Cat's hair, which changed from being plain brown to sort of blondish on the bangs part, then being red/auburn/strawberry in other scenes. I wondered if she wears a wig, or was between getting touch ups between shooting scenes out of sequence.

I also kept staring at the shockingly yellow fringe dress she wore to the party. Girl really needs some support underwire, that's pretty much all that I could see when she was standing with front to the camera. Maybe men think that's attractive?

I did wonder why no one in the formal party, including the people hosting, noticed FBI guy and cop coming through wearing clothes that looked like they hadn't changed them (or taken a bath) in a few weeks. I wondered if the two guards got canned for letting them in. Or if they just went off and got drunk on vodka. Or whatever that was.

When ex-husband FBI guy came to Cat's house, again I kept staring at the 60s hippie top Cat was wearing. It went off her left shoulder and she left it off, which I thought was weird unless she was looking to entice the ex. Anyway, she was again bra-less although the baggy top was a blessing. No bra strap, just a tan line from a wider strap, like a tank.

I wondered why she was all bent about the ex hooking up with someone. I mean, it wasn't like she has been trying to get back with him, plus she's been sleeping with the cop. So I didn't get that at all.

I thought that snake necklace was all kinds of ... not cool or expensive looking. But what do I know. The thief guy reminded me of someone, like a junior Benedict Cumberbach, but he kept making faces which I guess were suppose to make him look evil or mysterious or sexy, I couldn't decide which.

I liked the end where Cat is walking with her surfboard covering up her torso, the leg strap flapping in the breeze. Next shot is an athletic Cat running toward the ocean, filmed from the back, leg strap attached. I guess she lost a few pounds and got into shape when she bent over to hook herself to her board.

ETA: Got a laugh out of the American flag being shown, then everyone getting into those right-driving cars. Like we don't notice that, show.

I googled that Hawaii has around 137 islands and I think they are pretending that they are on one of them.

They drive on the opposite side in the US Virgin Islands although the cars, since imported from the us, but there are some right hand drives

The series itself takes place in Nimitz Bay, a imaginary town on the fictional U.S. territory of Reef Island, but is filmed in Queensland, Australia.

In the U.S. territory of Virgin Islands (where the show is not filmed nor pretends to be located), cars drive on the left hand side of the road, but nearly all the automobiles on the island have left-side steering columns. So close, but no cigar.

My point is, this show pretends to be U.S. based yet must not have the budget for left-drive cars. Or it figures no one cares. Which I guess no one but me does since virtually no one watches this show. Too bad it doesn't have the pull to at least shut down a few Queensland roads so actors can drive on the right side and, you know, pretend to be U.S.

I guess Reef Island is some island where everyone migrated from Britain and brought their cars and driving habits from the UK, then America won it in some war or something and annexed it as a territory.

Yeah ... that explains it.

I noticed it and cared, too.  If it makes you feel better.  It's just fluff I have on in the background so I don't really worry about it.

I tried to watch last night but it couldn't keep my attention and I turned it off before it was over. Poppy is grating on my nerves. Every scene she lets her mouth hang open like it's for dramatic effect but I find myself watching for that more than concentrating on the story line. All I can think is "slack-jawed idiot" every time she does it, and she does it often.

I'm also not one to care about wardrobe, but is she bringing her own clothes to the set? Because they are so awful, they are upstaging her.

One part where I thought "WTH?" was when she was "accusing" the cop of seeing some other woman. Like she hasn't been sleeping with every barfly on the island. I don't mind that a woman past her prime has loose morals, but Poppy, you are NOT all that. And would I trust you heading up some crime ring? No way in hell.

It was so promising to be a fun summer series. And it is so disappointing IRL.

Where exactly is this island located, since Episode 9, "The Hohenzollern Collection" mentions old tunnels used for Japanese weapons during the war. The police station puts all of it's old cat ladies on the night shift.

Poppy is without a doubt the worst actor on this show. I really can't stand any scene she is in. Her constant duck lips are so distracting, and she uses them to show she is ... feeling/thinking whatever. "I'm thinking!" (duck lips) "I'm looking over there!" (duck lips)

I did like the scene with the FBI guy, hair down, sort of proposing to his woman. THAT was some good acting. I can't believe he would ever be attracted to Poppy with her 60s wardrobe (and those clothes would have sucked in the 60s too) and poochy constant duck lips.

I laughed at the scene of "Poppy" demonstrating skateboarding. Well done, stunt double who is in MUCH better shape than is Poppy.

Aerial views of the island show tons of high-rise buildings, like a huge metropolitan area. For sure there has to be ONE woman there the Asian cop could hook up with instead of the snarky duck-lipped Poppy. But I guess it's her show. Too bad for the cop, I guess he's stuck with her.

Marcia Gay Hardin kicked Poppy's acting ass to there and back in this episode, but then so did every other person on screen, including the extras.

Was Poppy Montgomery alwas such a bad actor? I watched "Without a Trace" and while that was quite a while ago, I don't remember her acting and facial and body expressions as being SO exaggerated. I may have been mesmerized by Anthony Lapaglia's handsomeness and was completely distracted but still....

I caught most of last night's episode (the one in which Cat gets bio-poisoned) right up until the scientist is doing his blood transfusion. After that did they reveal why she was targeted and/or any changes in relationships?

I ask because my Internet is down due to AT&T's apparent new business model of starving out loyal-but-lower-end customers while retaining wealthier customers with truly disposable (in every sense of the word) income.

There were back-to-back eps last night that I had on while I was doing other things, going in and out, and doing almost everything but watching. However, to answer your question @shapeshifter ... lucky you, I saw the end of the poison-lipstick episode. Cat and her two boyfriends were lolling around on the couch drinking vodka and summing up the plot of the show. It went like this:

Some guy wanted to kill the scientist who invented the bio-bug that was put on Cat's lipstick. The husband and boyfriend tracked the scientist down, and he said the only way to cure her was to do a blood transfusion from him since I guess he had iron-strong blood or something, I wasn't paying attention, just wondering if transfusing AB positive blood into a B negative person wouldn't kill that person. But whatever.

Anyway, after transfusion happens, the Asian cop goes for a walk on the beach while Cat is MAYBE! not going to die, or MAYBE! she is! Then we see a guy in the bushes outside Cat's house with a sniper rifle, and we see through the scope he's going to shoot husband! No, he's going to shoot scientist! No, husband! No, scientist! Yes, scientist!

That's when Asian cop appears behind the sniper and tells him to drop it. So he does. Turns out, the sniper guy wanted to kill the scientist all along, but scientist couldn't be found. So sniper arranged for Cat to be poisoned because he knew husband and cop both loved Cat so much, they would never let her die and would ferret out the scientist at any cost to save Cat. Then sniper guy would be able to kill scientist for whatever reason he had.

So husband and cop did find the scientist, saved Cat, but sniper guy went to jail. As it ended, husband, cop and Cat are a happy threesome.

To be continued ...

Thanks, @saber5055! So it was one of those OnlyOnTV plans that could've gone so wrong so many ways.

Anybody else know why Sniper wanted to kill Scientist? I'm just wondering if it was plausible since obviously the plot was there just to put Cat in a Damsel In Distress situation.

The sniper guy was old, like Cat and her husband put together old. His face wasn't shown until Asian Cop pulled his gun and told him he'd shoot Sniper before Sniper could get his shot off. Before that, we only saw closeups of his black gloves, black flak jacket, black outfit, and the views through his scope, husband/scientist heads in the cross hairs.

Now I will have to snoop around to find out who Sniper was.

While I was busy doing other things and just sort of listening, I was hoping Cat would die and put this series out of its misery. I know, I am a horrible person. But next week is the finale, so there's that.

Alas, next week is not the finale. They did the old only one episode left until the finale trick. 2 episodes left. My guide is showing one on the 5th and the finale is on the 13th, which is a Friday, so weird. Okay maybe not weird, debates are on that Thursday hence the move to Friday.

He was the Australian Secret Service guy they questioned about the operative that poisoned Cat's lipstick. He said the operative wasn't working for him. I don't know why they didn't make it easier for the police to find the guy, since that is what they wanted in the first place. If the show made any sense, the Australian Secret Service guy should have contacted the police the minute they reported the infection to the CDC. Mentioned that the guy that engineered the infection was possibly employed by Carter Eastland and the whole thing might have been feasible.

How can the nurse just allow somebody to run up and transfer blood into another person. She is supposed to be the one that has the most sense in the group. They didn't even bother to check the blood type let alone the other things you should check for. I am surprised the scientist didn't immediately die from the STD backwash from Cat's blood.

Lordy why am I even watching this show anymore? I was so aggravated from the beginning to the end of this episode. A few comments:

Sure, why not, steal a truck from some locked impound yard. Jesus, she’s a grown woman and they keep on trying to ram Cat down our throats as some hippy-dippy cool chick. Give it up. She’s not. Cat-call an Uber like the rest of us.

Cat is basically dying, she’s been purposely exposed to a fatal toxin, so sure, why don’t you just go home and wait it out there. What could go wrong? As if her place has a full medical setup and all the equipment a hospital would have? And no shade to nurses whatsoever (nurses are great and under-appreciated) but there’s not even a doctor there?

Someone tried to kill her-and there’s no round the clock cops?

Gah! Why am I trying to apply common sense to this show? And, a personal pet peeve of mine-dream sequences and flashbacks. Hate them.

End rant.

Cat stole the truck because it had some kind of special lights that were great for shining onto the ocean when you are night surfing. Of course Cat is too "cool" to get caught and too "special" to go to jail for all the crimes she commits. No wonder Petra is turning into a criminal, look at her role model/guardian.

I caught the 2nd half of last night's penultimate episode "Prison Break."

Near the end there were a couple of Miami Vice-reminiscent camera shots of Jake commandeering a speedboat with his luxuriant hair streaming à la swashbuckling Errol Flynn, and with Cat standing near the bow like a Figure Head in her white frock with bra-like bodice
—together they would make a wedding cake topper in Waterworld.
And I think I have succeeded in name-checking all the pop culture references the show creators were either consciously or subconsciously attempting to evoke.

Moral of the story/cautionary tale for other lovers:
Married couples who can't manage to sign divorce papers will get back together in the end —like magnets.

Except the title of the episode. Anyone remember Michael Scoffield?

I completely forgot this was on last night. When I did remember well after the episode was over, my thought: "Oh well."  Sounds like I missed some laughs though.

Another one? Or didn't the free-style blood transfusion last week cure her? Is she going to die to ensure there is no season 2?

Anybody else see that huge smudge of makeup that Poppy left on that guy who owned his own island's shirt after she gave him a hug. Erasing the video of Petra handing the guard a gun makes everything Petra did go away. The prison didn't have a copy, the guard didn't say where he got the gun, all the police who watched the video no longer remember it. Why would the police allow Cat, who was suspected of breaking people out of prison, walk around the evidence cages of the police station, which seem to be completely unguarded. That scene makes you wonder why Cat had to break into the evidence cages at night that one episode when she could have just walked in at any time during the day.

Regarding the finale: 🙄

  • Since Poppy’s name is on the production credits, I assume Poppy is responsible for the seemingly endless soft core porn flashbacks with her and the felon. Maybe she was going for a message of how out-of-shape, middle-aged women can be sexy? Even though I looked away like I do with scenes in the morgue in crime shows — still…ugh.
  • So many bullets. So little mayhem. So unrealistic. So insulting to gun violence victims.

Regarding the end of the finale:

  1. My first thought was: Why would anyone want to kidnap Cat?
  2. Second thought: Oh. To lure one of her obsessed lovers into danger.
  3. And/or to get What’sHisName back to The Reef.
  4. And to give her character another misadventure to get out of.

Nutshell review: Reef Break is Dennis the Menace with boobs.

You were looking at that scene as it was today, instead of through the lens smeared with "Vaseline" they used to transport you back "however" many years to when Cat was at peak "Cat-ness". Back in those days Wyatt would have never flirted with the Lady Cop or Eastland's daughter if he was dating Cat.

Oh, you mean FBI guy, I don't understand how Cat blew up his relationship. Deputy Governor Lady couldn't seem to figure out who he was in love with. Every woman on the island seems to get an "inferiority complex" whenever Cat is around.

Eastland's daughter appears to be an idiot, Eastland should send her to the mainland and let her live the heiress life.

Ah, I'm back here to feel the love for our red-headed goddess.  Of course everyone is in love with Cat.  She's a superhero.  But brilliant Cat gets very stupid at the end.  Maybe she was so distracted because she and Jake really are end-game.  That would make me happy.

Yayyy, cliff-hanger, maybe we'll get another season.  Truly hope so.

I planned to watch this -- it's the FINALE! -- but didn't get home in time so only saw the last few minutes. I guess it's good Poppy didn't knock on Jake's door. She prefers to stand outside and yell for someone. She also never turned the lights off on her little car, which is going to have a dead battery. I thought maybe they were automatic-off lights, but they were still on when the truck drove away.

Speaking of the truck, where did it come from? It sneaked in under cover of the explosion and Poppy didn't see it because it's black. Yeah, that's how it got there.

I got a laugh out of the bad guys tossing Poppy into the back of the pickup to roll around and bash her head a few times as they speed away to wherever they were going. What, no one owns a cargo van in that place?

Does this mean Season 2 or will Poppy live forever in that pickup bed while being driven around Reef Island? Stay tuned ...

They must have been Garbage Men because they threw Poppy in the back if the truck like a sack of trash.

I had fun with this summer fluff show, and I even got past all the right-driving cars and the HUGE metropolis that existed on little ole Reef Island, but that dang Police Chief just bugged me.  The prop department must have been high when they dreamed up her uniform.  Four stars on one shoulder--three stars on the other shoulder--combined with Sergeant stripes on her sleeve.  WTH?????  Is her rank Sergeant-chief, or General Sergeant, or Chief Sergeant? And is the show's budget so low that no one could afford to replace the missing star?   C'mon, I have watched 70s porn flicks with better attention to detail...
