Magic: The Gathering

Recommended Posts

Jace, Liliana, and the rest of the planeswalker crew from collectible card game Magic: The Gathering will be coming to Netflix in a new animated series spearheaded by Joe and Anthony Russo of Avengers: Endgame fame.

The director duo is teaming up with Wizards of the Coast (Magic: The Gathering’s parent company) and Hasbro’s Allspark Animation to bring the card game to TV for the first time in the franchise’s 26-year history. According to a press release Netflix released Monday, the Russos will “oversee the creation of an all new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers” which will “contend with stakes larger than any one world can hold.”

Magic: The Gathering is a franchise with an estimated player base of 20 million people, and the Russo brothers said in a statement that they consider themselves among that group.

“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” the Russos wrote.

The brothers, known for their success as the directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, will executive produce the series. Henry Gilroy (Star Wars Rebels) and Jose Molina (The Tick) will serve as showrunners and co-writers for the series.

Netflix has already seen success in promoting hardcore geek franchises like Castlevania, which was the first video game adaptation to get a “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Magic: The Gathering, with its 26 years of in-game lore and dedicated real-world geeky fandom, makes an obvious potential slam dunk for the streaming platform.

This will be the first time Magic has come to the screen, and only the second time anyone has tried to adapt it since Fox failed to do so in 2014.

The length of each episode and the order of episodes have yet to be determined. Needless to say, I will continue to report on this developing story as Netflix shares more details.
