TLC continues its rich tradition of producing only the most understated and tasteful basic-cable programs:  sMothered premieres on June 9th at 10:00 p.m.

Just from the trailer I am grossed out.  Sharing bath water?  I don't even like my own bath water so I shower while it is draining.😱

So much this!  Does anyone know who the guy is in the promo who says, after the mom and daughter talk about sharing bath water, something like, "If you think there's anything wrong with it, you're crazy"?  I realize the clip may be edited such that his comment isn't even about the whole bath water situation, lol.  I'm just wondering who he is.

It's ok.  It is hard to find anyone on camera with sense on TLC.

I think Sunhe has more angles than a rhombicosidodecahedron.*

No way that Cher didn't tell her mother she wasn't pregnant like, the day after she conceived.

*Yeah, I totally googled that.

Ok I don’t know how much I can watch.  First thing I was thinking with the first set was what happens when the daughter gets pregnant and then boom..

Second set, counseling?  I get olden times and sharing bath water as a necessity and bathing little kids together, I can even go so far as crazy uber environmentalists, but tying such meaning to it too far...

I'm a psychologist, but, man, it is people like this that make me thankful I'm an Industrial/Organizational psychologist and not clinical.  These people went so far over my head.  I feel like Freud and Jung would be like "nah, man...nope...not touching it".

Personally, I grew up with a very mother mom...she wasn't trying to be my friend, she was making sure that as immigrants, her kid didn't wander off the path that we came to this country for (education, a better life, etc etc).  So, she was NOT my friend.  Thus, these people confuse the every-loving hell out of me.

Cher and her mom are gross.  Her little attitude from the reasonable request her husband had about not sharing pregnancy until they tell the other parents "this is not his special time, it's ours".  Wut.  To pretend to think about it, when you packaged up a pregnancy test and the mimi cup as a gift was nasty and disrespectful to their husband.  [catty comment] That house in Palm Habour reminds me that money doesn't buy taste.  Ew. [/catty]

Angelica and Sunhe.  The level of manipulation and passive aggression feel super normal (as I have a South Asian mom, so it is similar in Asian overmothering), if too much.  The bathwater sharing and going on dates thing was the squeaky part.  "What do you think I should do while you are on this date?"  "I don't want to relax...not when you are out of the house"  "I get [multiple physical symptoms] when you aren't here."  Pure guilt and manipulation.  Sunhe rubs me the wrong way, and Angelica is just too meek and under the woman's thumb to do much else.  Angelica, be a grown woman, please.

Sandra and Mariah freak me out so much.  She's 21.  Like.  They are both ratchet Kardashian wannabes.  The younger sister and ex-husband seem to come from a different family. Why must the younger child be the parent?  It's the usual on these shows.

I was flipping through the channels and must have hit previous channel because suddenly there was this high-pitched squeal with two women talking over each other and not making words. This forum showed up on my sidebar as recent, so I decided to see if anyone liked it. Then, I saw:

Hooray! It wasn't just my ears failing me. This show looked like it was going to be awful and sounded awful for the whole 60 seconds I heard of it and since there are only a handful of comments, it must not have been snarkworthy enough for anyone to bother with it.

Way to go TLC. You finally hit a bottom.

I get a creepy vibe from everyone on this show.  I can't believe a DOCTOR doesn't see the pathology between his wife and her mother???  And he still married into that mess?  That is one doctor I would not go and see for any kind of treatment.  And if Sandra (with the mother/daughter boob jobs) is 45, then I'm.....well, let's just say ain't NO way, NO how that woman is 45.

There is no strong father figure in any of these messed up relationships--because the mothers have systematically pushed the men out of their own daughter's lives.  These are the most screwed-up, emotionally stunted, selfish women (and daughters) that I've ever seen.  And believe me, being in the field of psychiatry, I've seen a LOT!

The only reason I'll watch this show again is for Adrian—the voice of reason. Oh, and that it's TLC and I can take comfort in knowing that all of these scenes were set up by the producers for maximum outrage effect.

This was even crazier than anticipated.  It's hard to believe that these people exist and function in the real world.  Giving thanks that my mom was a 'regular' mom -- and my daughter should be thanking me!

I wonder about the men who are involved with these women.  Angelica's boyfriend should run away as fast as he can.  I'm sure the only thing that  saves Cher's marriage is the distance between mom and daughter.  I fear that the mom will move to New York once she's a grandma.

I feel sorry for Mariah's younger sister.  I bet she'll be out of there as soon as she can.  Sadly, her mom and sister won't even care.

The show was so fake.

The way it was film it gave me that cheesy .....My Crazy Obsession show.....vibe.

It is not film like a reality show.  It is just meant to show you examples of scenarios.

Like the bathtub scene.   Mom is just sitting in the water....not bathing.....and, then calls her daughter.

This was the PERFECT show for Colt and Debbie.

I’d rather see them being kooky.....with the kats.........than deal with Larissa.

Now that Larissa is gone.....they can join this show.

Yep. I remember that episode. She did a dance at her party and accidentally pantsed herself.

Her mom was a smother then too. Def trying to be the “cool mom.”

Long time reader of this site (when it was TWOP then Previously TV) and first-time commenter.  I literally created this account because I had to say something about this bus wreck of a show.  Like WTF?  No, really?

As someone who watches way too much "candid reality," it's hard to shock me, plus I know much of it is fake, but did anyone get a total sexual predator vibe from Sunhe towards her daughter?  It wasn't just the bathwater, which was excuse-me-while-I-vomit, but when the daughter walked in with pedicure tools and the mom was in her robe and asked her daughter, "What are you going to do for me today?" I thought porn music was going to start.  As the daughter gave her mom a pedicure, the daughter said that her mom never does anything like that for her.  Plus, Sunhe creepily said something about when her daughter does these things it's the ultimate sign of trust and bonding (or something equally creeptastic). So much grooming going on.  There were two episodes available on the TLC app, so I'm not sure if this was the first or second episode, but the daughter dresses the mom AND orders her food at restaurants.  This is not a weird, sort of icky co-dependent relationship, this one comes across more like abuse.  Granted, her daughter is 30 (girl, run), but you can tell that after years of basically being her mother's slave, it looks more like Stockholm Syndrome.

The rest of them, it's your garden variety "where do they find these people?"  The pregnant daughter and mother is more annoying than anything, although the mom's Medieval Times McMansion totally cracked me up.  when the mom and daughter were sitting there talking I expected a jousting tournament to go by and one of them to pick up a large turkey leg with their bare hands.

It's weird, I remember the name Cher on Sweet 16 and remember that awful show they did some years later where they sent the spoiled brats to a remote location, but I'm having trouble remembering all of it.

I think you hit the nail on the head.  Sunhe was different than the other moms.  The level of hate she got in her eyes when the boyfriend just entered the room.  The passive aggressive "what am I going to do while you're gone, I'll have anxiety" felt icky to watch.  And I watch the bottom of the barrel trash reality.  That's the only daughter that doesn't seem to feel just as crazy back to her mom like the others.  She looks afraid.  And judging by the previews, seems major drama with them is coming up.

I kept waiting for the cuckcoo clock sound effects over sicko comments of love and nutso devotion.

This show is reminiscent of the Putmans...the needy father demands all his adult children, spouses, and their children all living with him under his roof.

Sicko devotion mixed with manipulation, guilt, and insecurity.

Cher’s mother has 2 knights in shining armor at her front door and a full sized waiter in her kitchen...who buys shit like that.....

Sunhe is right....Dude needs to get a divorce before he asks Angelica to move in...

Omg I watched the 2nd ep on Demand and the Mafia wife in Chicago is literally living in a Nagle picture from the 80's. Black, white and red acrylic and mirrored furniture. The are always making a cheese plate. I'm obsessed.

I wonder if someone in the production company had to deal with this?

Way back when Tom Snyder used to do the Tomorrow Show, he had on a mother/daughter lesbian couple.

I was doing a little digging around, mostly because I have other things I need to be doing and I'm a master of avoidance, and found that Cher was previously on "My Sweet Sixteen" and "Exiled."  She describes herself as an actor, model, and host.  I'm thinking she's close to her mom, but in all reality, "Smothered" is just a vehicle for screen time.  More TLC BS.

I actually thought that Sunhe was the daughter.  Angelica needs self respect and confidence.  All things this sMothered stuff did NOT give her.

The scary thing is that I don't think this is fake.  Most people might not be this extreme but I know this exists.  I had a neighbor whose daughter had some type of developmental issues.  The mother was ill, so her daughter became her nurse/companion.  The daughter never got a real job, never got into a relationship.  When the mother died, the daughter was in her mid forties; turns out she never put her daughter's name on the apartment lease.  Neighbors had to write the landlord swearing that the daughter grew up in that apartment.  But it didn't matter because within a year the daughter was evicted; she'd never worked a job, and thought her mother's social security would keep going to her after her mother died.  That didn't happen.  The daughter ran out of money and was evicted.

I've known of cases where the mothers had daughters who were mentally ill.  Instead of getting them help, they kept them home, maybe believing they were protecting him.  But what those mothers didn't realize is that their daughters would outlive them.  So the mom dies, the daughter's left in the house.  In once case, the daughter stopped taking her medicine (since her mother wasn't there to administer it to her) and ended up going into a coma and eventually dying, the other woman couldn't pay the bills, and when the heat was turned off, tried to start a fire in the fireplace and nearly burned down the home in the process.

What these mothers don't realize is that, being a good parent means that your child will be able to live on their own without you.
