I wish Genevieve would have said how she handles things like that niche - IMO. most times leaving them bare is the best option.

I didn't realize until the end that it was just a really stupid shelf 12 feet off the ground! I had thought there was a hallway or balcony back there!

We had a shelf up near the high ceiling in our master bath that I thought was incredibly stupid (we redid the bathroom eventually). What on earth do you do with that dust catcher? I mean the first thought is to put plants up there, but then who's going to water them???

And why did the Elle Decor editor trade-in his three day stubble for a 70s porn star mustache????

So did that electric fireplace manufacturer have a product placement deal with this show? Isn't that the second time we've seen the same one?

I thought the guys' before room looked pretty darn good!

Also, I assume there were TWO closet doors into that space for a good reason. Do they have to slither down that closet now to get to the end?

Given the one we saw in the NeoClassical room that looked like it would have been on deep discount at Big Lots, I imagine for the two nice ones that they don’t get a deal just that it’s probably the cheapest one that size that is always in stock.

Those ‘fire and ice’ fireplaces always look gaudy to me. I live in Chicago though so I want actual heat. That one room had way too many accessories. I wouldn’t want a lot of random crap on my dressers but it’s easy to get rid of.

Hey I bet next week there'll be a Dramatic Moment right before a commercial in which it looks like the client hates something but then they come back from commercial and they love it!

I can’t with this stupid show much longer. I so badly want it to be good but it’s really really not & is there NO ONE in the interior design industry who isn’t horrible and annoying?

The good ones like that the one installed in this episode and in the Gay couples living room on an earlier episode do in fact provide actual heat.

To me they all scream FAKE.

Well yes they aren’t providing wood burning flames that pollute the environment and can cause destruction. But at least them looked intentional and not crazy cheap as fuck as in the neoclassical home.

The judge made a point of saying there was no heat from that one. I know some of them generate gas heat but I don’t like the ones with the ‘ice’.

I prefer ones that have the fake wood logs. Those look much less "artificial" than those ice cubes. My dad has one and it is good looking and puts out nice heat.

Boy am I glad Barrie won! I could not have lived with all of that "personal" stuff that Sunshine added to her room. To me, it didn't look like something someone collected but like someone needed to fill every square inch of space with "stuff". And all of that layering of rugs under the ugly dining room table was too, too much. I wonder how much she spent on carpets and rugs? Barrie's room might not have been full blown BoHo but I liked it and it looked homey and inviting. He surely improved that room but then, how could he not since the main feature was a Foosball table before? I liked the door he added and what he did with the staircase, especially the grate he added. Now that was neat.

I really had a hard time looking at Sunshine and her bloated bright pink lips! She looked so much better with no (or little makeup).

The piles of rugs and chairs that could barely move ruined the look in that dining room. I like the boho look but it’s not about piles of junk. I think Barry was hampered by a homeowner who hated everything. The right person won this time.

I really want to know how they match the designers/clients to the style of the week because every episode there is at least one designer and one client who don’t really seem to be good at or like the style that is required.

I think Boho only really works if you do travel and you do collect things rather than just have someone assemble it from stores in LA.

That is my huge problem with so many of these design shows. Who the hell wants random stuff on their bookshelves or coffee tables that was acquired 10 minutes ago at some shop?

Yeah it’s like the episode where the designer wanted to make a picture wall in the dining area so went around their neighborhood and took random pictures. I mean me and my boyfriend are super into photography so a lot of the art on our  walls are pictures that we took but I can’t imagine the home owners didn’t have photographs they cherish that she could have printed and framed and mean more than pictures of their neighborhood. Not to mention given all the ways you can manipulate digital images now she could have unified them all easily if they didn’t appear uniform.

Sunshine and that pink lipstick was too much.

As Whitney and Kathryn kept reiterating, boho is about reflecting a life well traveled. But what if one isn't well traveled? There's nothing particularly boho about having a bunch of stuff that's made to look like it's from Africa, South America, and Asia, but made in some random factory somewhere and purchased for you by your designer. Also "red" isn't a requirement for boho decorating. I liked Kathryn as a person on Million Dollar Decorators, but hated nearly every one of her designs. It's not just boho. I was disappointed with all of Martyn Lawrence Bullard's designs too. I loved all of Mary's work.

This episode basically dispensed with any pretense that the clients are fans of that week's style because Barrie's clients seemed to be barely tolerant of boho design.

Barry: “I gotta listen to what my client wants, even if it’s less really boho”

Ugly Pink Lipstick: “hold my beer; I have a hideous metal & glass table to get”.

I liked Barry’s much more. I’m guessing the client satisfaction score made all the difference here  UPL’s really hated it, & it wasn’t just the table; they hated all the dark wood too.  & the stupid piles o blankets n things...

My mouth dropped open when Elle Decor Editor said something like (to UPL's coffee-table-o-stuff) "I know your personality"

So is he talking about UPL or the homeowners' personality? Cause if it's the homeowners, does he know she just bought stuff-by-the-pound at thrift stores? She even bragged about it.

"We have $25,000.  I'm budgeting $13,000 for construction and $12,000 for accessories".

Too bad this episode did not add one of those special 5K gift cards from JCP.  Think how many more meaningless tchotchkes could have been added to the room...

In the California Modern home, I wonder about the functionality of that recessed TV. At least in my house you need a lot of access to the back of the TV: the AppleTV, the DVD, and the FiOS box. They had what looked like an outlet, duh, but what about connecting all the other crap?

Can that trellis really safely support heavy containers of dirt and plants?

That L-shaped baby blue banquette looked awfully narrow to sit on. Why such a thick back? (and the judges noticed too)

I guess since all my comments criticize Amanza, I've got my favorite! I'm not quite finished watching but it looks like I agree with the judges.

I wasn't wild about the trellis house, but I thought it was unfair to keep dinging the designer on not changing the floor plan.  There were no other walls to take that TV!  My living room is the same way.  If a house is more than X years old, no one saw the coming of giant screens for normal houses.

dleighg, I had the same functionality concerns- heck, how to even get the fire stick plugged into the the TV?  Maybe there was a hidden access panel on the side?

The trellis/plant idea was attractive, but I didn't see any beefing up for the "steel" planter boxes, either.

ETA- I wasn't at all in love with those walnut panel walls.  I kept waiting for Bob Newhart and his group therapy patients to come in.   Waaay too 70's for me.

I always wonder that about hanging TV’s. I have a satellite box that has to connect and I would need access to it and the TV. I also didn’t like the wood wall and not a fan of tiny furniture that can’t be used.

I would like it if they would find designers who don’t look down on the homeowners and their existing designs. Not everyone can afford expensive furniture and remodeling. Also some people prefer a house you can live in not just photograph.

Right? I think that's what's really been bugging me about some of the designers AND the general tone of the show. The language that's mostly being used is very condescending - "your floor plan is nonfunctional" "oh gawd it's so bland" etc. instead of using kinder language like "we're going to make this floor plan work much better for you"  "we'll give your room more personality" "we'll transform your space" - language that's not so insulting. Most people do not hire professional designers. The HO on this show don't pay for any of it so what a treat to get a new furniture and maybe a space modification for free, but that doesn't make you tragic or basic.

I thought I would not like Amanza because of her meet the HO outfit (sheer top over shirt, choker necklace AND knee high boots - wow that's a lot of look) but she seemed lovely. I saw that at least two of the days she brought in donuts/pastries to the worksite and I love that.

I liked but didn't love both California Modern rooms. I do love a Wassily chair though so that may have distracted me . My TV is pretty big but i couldn't see the detail on the shearling couch. Maybe it's more impressive in person? True shearling also creeps me out a bit, i'm not vegan but try to be conscious about what animal things I buy, making sure they're long lasting. Wonder how it will wear... I predict there would be two sitsmarks within a few weeks.

Mixed feelings on the wall paneling. It's trendy now but I don't think it'll age well.

The idea of the banquette was great but I didn't love the fabric on the built in cushion. I also might have wanted loose pillows  for the back instead of a build in cushion to make the space more flexible.

Regarding the TV, I've seen TV mounts (opens up like a V shape) that pull out / extend away from the wall, that might help provide access to the ports when needed? Also since the family is pretty into TV I'm certain there were talks about how it functioned. Would be nice for them to air some of that discussion.

I agree though it was a lot better than that exes flip show that is replacing it looks.
