HGTV: Now With a Lot Less "G"

I admit to watching way too much HGTV, because it's pretty much ideal "background" programming for when you're busy with other tasks. But I'm getting tired of how they go all in on one show. For example, I like Fixer-Upper, but right now it seems like that's the only show I seem to see. A marathon the other night, and now another marathon today. I wish they would mix it up, show different stuff like mixing in some Income Property, Vacation Home for Free, even some of the older decorating shows. Even a good show gets tiresome after you've seen several in a row.

I, too, always have HGTV on in the background most times. It's my go-to channel. All they seem to show anymore is Fixer Upper or Love It or List It. I miss Curb Appeal. I'm tired of all the flipping houses shows. I mainly watch House Hunters International.

Any Property Virgins fans around?  It popped up on my dvr.

After a 4 hour marathon of reruns next Tues, starting at 7:30 am, they're burning off 1 new episode at 11:30.  Then, according to the website, nothing until late March, lol.

Guess that means it's been cancelled / they're not filming add'l seasons.

I downgraded my cable after subscribing to Sling TV so I can still watch HGTV in the background.  Today I randomly turn it on and they show the Flip or Flop with the roach infested house!  Again!  Do they run that one every other time or something? It's almost like they think the gross-out aspect has some kind of appeal or something.

My boyfriend and I always joke it should be renamed the "Oh Wow" channel. Seriously, watch any show on that network (especially house hunters) and take a shot every time someone says "oh wow", you'd be on the floor before the end of the episode.

I'd LOVE a program on how to urban homestead for those of us who are interested, but still in container gardening.

HGTV used to show The City Gardener with Matt James.  They also briefly had an American version with him called Urban Outsiders

Gardener's Journal has been mentioned, but another show I really liked was Gardener's Diary with Erica Glasener.  She would visit various gardens, sometimes very simple ones.  I remember there was a service station owner who would plant zinnias in a vacant spot in front.  Other people had elaborate gardens.   She'd discuss the garden with the owners and talk about certain plants.

Egypt Sherrod is on Facebook, and she recently posted a link to this article, which says it's still running.http://www.examiner.com/article/property-virgins-host-egypt-sherrod-puts-her-expertise-into-print

They put some episodes in the can in 2014 but I don't see any casting calls for 2015.  HGTV's very strange about these things - they never seem to "cancel" anything.  Instead, they take it out of prime time, stop filming and burn off whatever's in the can to fill out their schedule.

We'll see what happens going forward but it doesn't sound promising given that they're airing only 1 new episode this month as an am fill-in.  In the meantime, I'm sure Egypt hopes to peddle her book as PV host.

Maybe they wore out the old episodes of Love It or List It.

And Income Property hasn't been on in a long while.  I hope they don't drop it, rather than a lot of crappy things they have.

Yep, same thing there, auntjess.  They've been using IP reruns in the morning but no new episodes are on the schedule.  Naturally, LIOLI (x2) still retains their prime time slots.

ARRGGGHH! I continue to be sooo frustrated with HGTV.

I stumbled over -- literally:) -- found it by channel surfing today....a new show. hand't seen it before or heard ANYthing about it. So I went to TV guide.

Lo and behold it's a new show -- PREMIERING today...."Nashville Flip"

What network premieres a NEW series....at 2p on a frigging Saturday afternoon.

I and others have looong complained of HGTV BURYING new shows, while repeating others ad nauseum. And the network CONTINUES to do this.

ARRRGGGHH!

They put on some new show called "Building The Bahamas" at 11pm on Sunday night!

Yet weeknights we get blocks and blocks of Property Brothers and Love It Or List It to the point where I'm changing the channel - and I'm one of those viewers for whom HGTV is my go-to channel. That seems to be counterproductive to keeping their audience entertained and watching.

DIY is my go-to channel, but they don't have Mike Holmes even?  How can that happen.
Lots of yard shows today.
They've been showing blocks of  Decked Out, but not Paul's other (and better) show, Disaster Decks.

For the most part, you lose me when I see many palm trees.
If they'd dump LIOLI and the Scott brothers, and also HH, there'd be time for good shows.

I've got it on my DVR but haven't watched yet.
I think I saw on Facebook that they're dancers, is that right.
The ones I found pretty funny were those on Texas Flip & Move, which is on 2 channels, DIY (I think) and GAC.

I've seen this on multiple shows, but I find it endlessly amusing when they talk about "custom built-ins" and I'm like, "that is from IKEA." I assume they do it because they're not contracted with IKEA so it's a legal thing, but it just makes me laugh every time.

Also I wish they had more shows focused on city living. I know they have for rent, but it seems like a lot of the time their solution is along the lines of "drill holes in your wall" which has been a no go for most of the places I've ever rented. Plus they seem to be assuming a certain amount of square footage. I would love for them to show how to design small apartments or condos. They could show the small space fix for those who can drill or paint and then show an apartment-friendly fix. I would think that would be a great chance to talk about Target or their other sponsors.

Has anyone heard/read anything about why Yard Crashers has yet another new host?

Because Matt Blashaw was filming another show - that Vacation House for Free show.

He announced that the new guy was just filling in a while ago.

Lately it seems that HGTV should be named The Property Brothers Channel....they seem to be on 24/7.  I overstate, but geez, how many shows do they have? And I know the couple on Fixer Upper is popular, but they seem to be on all the time, too.  Although not as often as The Brothers.  Wouldn't it be nice if HGTV would do a "Retro Night" once a week?  Show some of the old shows...marathons of Decorating Cents...marathons of the Paul James show...etc.  I would be curious to see the ratings for something like that.  I know, no excitement..no crashing..no drama.

For YEARS, I and other longtime HGTV viewers have suggested a programming block for overnight -- say from 1a-4a sign off -- of the old HGTV shows. Heaven knows there are enough shows, and episodes for them to do that.....call them HGTV Classics, or  call it "VINTAGE" something or other since that's such a hot word in decorating now....what ever who cares what they call it...just DO IT, HGTV.

Some of us on a previous website would get such a chuckle out of new viewers discovering HGTV, and thinking the programming was so great. And the longtime viewers would say,  "You don't know how good HGTV USED to be." There were and are shows that newbies don't even know about. Someone would ask, "why can't HGTV have -- this kind of show -- a show about small spaces, or inexpensive decorating of how to do little repairs yourself. ANd we longtime viewers would say -- it DID have those shows several of them in fact, but once HGTV went "all house hunters all the time" about 10 years ago...and all "real estate" instead of "home and GARDENING" that was end of that other kind of programming.

There's no reason in the world HGTV can't air some of these old shows. Even if it doesn't have the rights to them now. GET the rights, work out a deal. You can't tell me HGTV can't find a way to air these shows.

Here's just a PARTIAL list of old HGTV shows that I bet people would LOVE...some people would think they're great just because they've never seen them before.

-- The Carol Duvall Show -- CIndy Piccolli on Decorating with Style -- Kitty Bartholomew -- Chris Casson Maddon
-- Joan Sterfend on Decorating Cents -- Matt and Shari Hiller on Room by Room -- Michael Payne - Designing for the Sexes
-- Before and After - a whole house remodel show Pat Simpson -- Fix It Up w/- Pat Simpson and Jodi Marks
-- Help Around the House w./ Henry Harrison -- Weekend Warriors w/ Chris McWatt

-- Gardener's Journal -- City Gardener -- Gardening By the Yard w/ Paul james -- Landscape Smart w/ Ken Bastida
-- Outer Spaces -- and Surprise Gardener w/ Suzie Coelho

-- Room to Go w/ Peter Fallico -- This Small Space w/ Susan Crenshaw
-- Homes Across America w/ Joe Ruggiero -- Fantasy Open House
-- Dream House (followed one family or owners whole house makeover all season long)

-- There was also show that was a "Hints with Heloise" type show

Heck those show go back to BEFORE these shows which HGTV ALSO dropped: Save My Bath, Spice Up My Kitchen, Awesome Interiors with Jennifer Convy, Room for Change w/ Joanne Liebler, Designers Challenge, Landscapers Challenge, Curb Appeal, Design on a Dime, Designed to Sell, Sensible Chic, Double Take, 24 Hour Design and Rate My Space both w/ Angelo Surmelis, Kenneth Brown, ANY of Sarah Richardson shows (Sarah,s House, Sarah 101, and others), Debbie Travis, House Hunters, Small Space, Big Style, Holmes on Homes, Holmes Inspection, Divine Design, Candice Tells All

And WELL before: Design Star, Genevieve Gorter, Color Splash w/ David Bromstad, The Antonio Project w/ Antonio Ballatore, Bang for Your Buck, Curb Appeal the Block, Flea Market Flip, Love it or List It, Property Virgins, The Property Shop, Income Property, and the G-d awful Myles of Style w/ Kim Myles, Yard Crashers, House Crashers, Bath Crashers, Kitchen Cousins. Cousins on Call, Flip or Flop, Brother vs Brother, Handyman Challenge.

Fixer Upper and Flip or Flop people weren't even heard of then. Heck the Flip or Flop couple was probably still in high school when some of these shows were on.

I actually think very fondly of the early days of HGTV...and when I stumbled upon Room by Room....I was HOOKED. For more than a decade I was addicted to HGTV....now I barely watch. BUT the execs say viewers like what they see now....that's PART of the reason HGTV goes so OVERBOARD with it's new "stars."

-- Designed to Sell was hot...so they ran that show practically every night -- and the put Clive in another show (design star host), and Lisa was on a design challenge show

-- House Hunters was a hit, so they rand it ad nausem

-- The Holmes Inspection guy was popular so they aired his other show

-- The Cousins on Call guys were a hit so they gave them more shows

-- For a while now the Property Brothers and Scoot McGilivray have been hot, so now THEY are on other shows or have more shows of their own.

HGTV always takes what's popular in SMALL doses, and over runs it so much you get SICK OF IT. I KNOW other viewers feel the same way.

But we learned a long time ago HGTV programmers don't care.

Although I DID see an article about 3 years back that ratings were down. BUT they're probably up again, because people love all the cute hosts, Scott, the Property Brothers, etc.

I bet Michael Payne and Kitty Bartholomew, and Cris Casson Madden, Cindy Picoli, Mat Foox and Shari Hillier couldn't get a show on air today if they tried. Matt and Shari DID come up with a second show format and HGTV didn't want it. Whatever like I said I barely watch anymore. It's a shame because I turned so many other people on to HGTV I talked about it all the time. C'est la vie. I'll take my eyeballs elsewhere and give OTHER advertisers my time.

I think this is a cyclical thing.  There was a time when Love It or List It was running in several hour blocks, day in and day out.  But they were promoting the spinoff Love It or List It Too.  In this case, they're probably promoting the new season of Brother vs. Brother, hence the influx of Property Brother episodes.

My head spins.  Does anyone remember the show on HGTV (back in the late 90's, I think) where a couple bought a lot in Beaufort, SC and built a house?  Every week there was a crisis....seems the board that oversaw the historic properties had very strict guidelines and didn't hesitate to throw their weight around.

This was an older couple (compared to the young hipsters we see now) who were building their dream retirement home.  You actually learned something about building/remodeling an historic home, you got the house porn, and the weekly drama; even my husband watched it.

About 6 months after the show aired, we happened to be driving through Beaufort and decided to stop and see if we could find the house.  The lady at the Visitor Center was very nice and gave us a map with the house marked on it.  She said they had tons of people stop and inquire.

I think HGTV did another show like this but in another location...maybe New England?  Please tell me I am not dreaming all of this.  I am hoping they were on HGTV and not A&E or some such.

My point is that I don't think we will see this kind of show get made'/produced anymore. The drama now is so over-the-top manufactured, the couples are younger and better-looking, and there seems to be no interest in making programming changes.  Maybe the cycle will swing the other way at some point and we will see more design shows...ones where you actually learn something.  I am, however, loving Flea Market Flip..except I have seen some of them countless times.

Maybe HGTV could give Nate Berkus a show.

Yep – I remember that show fondly…..The show was called “DREAM HOUSE”

I found this description online: http://www.diynetwork.com/shows/dream-house

Building their house is a dream, but finishing it might be a nightmare.

Over a season, Dream House follows families as they crack through rocky terrain, battle the elements, build on extreme angles, contend with opinionated contractors and watch as their money is stretched to the max — to ultimately build their dream house.

I loved this this show….several  of the projects stand out to me:

--  A single guy completely renovating an old stone house, doing a lot of the work himself, has battles with a historic commission, he’s single throughout the entire season – then on the last show we find out he got married to some friend he had, and they had a baby. It was very much a ‘where did SHE come from?” kind of thing.

--  A couple – I think second marriage for both, no kids (or young kids anyway) – having a house built with an eye-brow window. I distinctly remember because that’s when I learned what that kind of window was called.

--  An older single guy in coastal Scituate, Massachusetts. I remember because 1) he had an old friend act as his decorator….2) he wanted it finished in time to host his daughter’s backyard wedding

--  Another couple with like 5 kids, who had ALL kinds of budget issues. You could tell when they were just getting started they could not afford the house. I think I read that they lost the house as it was being finished or not long after.

--  There was a couple in Potomac Maryland also I remember. I live in MD so that one stuck out as well. I remember they both had professional jobs, he worked a lot, while also trying to manage the project. I think they had two kids. I just remember the wife seems to be VERY particular. They ran into some design issues because of scheduling with contractors, and some of the changes they wanted made.

--  And one of the last seasons was a young-ish couple who built a house literally on the side of a mountain. The husbands family had the land, and he also had some construction background. I thinks the wife had a baby toward the end of the season. I remember on scene of a back how getting stuck in the mud after it had rained…that’s how steep the terrain was.

I totally agree with all of this.  Literally this network has the same 4-5 shows on, and shows that same show for the whole evening.  Typically it is either Property Brothers or the other versions of their shows, Love it or List it, Fixer Upper, Rehab Addict.  Given that they used to have several different shows on each evening, I just can't understand why they can't mix in some new shows with their regulars and add some of the diversity this channel used to have.  I do really miss the old style of HGTV shows, and would love to see something like that again.

And it is so true they bury their new shows so that noone ever knows they exist.  It is crazy.  Or they will show it one night and it will disappear to some daytime slot, and you just assume they dumped the show.

I haven't watched HGTV in years. It's nothing but real estate shows all. the. damn. time. I used to at least watch the Crasher shows on Saturday mornings but o tired of those even before they stopped showing them. When Matt was practically taking two bedrooms and a third of a walk in closet in a 3 bedroom house it's time to walk away. The designs were more more about being Kohler porn than actually designing something that fit with the house. I miss shows like Save My Bath which I the time I thought were a little over-the-top but in hindsight were incredibly practical compared to what little "design" we get now.

People knock Food Network but compared to HGTV the offer more diversity and maintain some connection to their roots. I find it interesting they couldn't/didn't even keep Design Star running while Food Network Star keeps cugging along despite lackluster winners and outright scandals.

Are you thinking of that clueless, self-absorbed couple in Chattanooga who kept adding and adding more garbage to that house that the guy (who fancied himself an architect) had designed? Her Daddy was a builder (I think the land and the money was his, and no baby in the offing, just two self-absorbed nitwits with no common sense) and the daughter was his Princess and got whatever she wanted and Daddy was stuck paying for it. Not only was the 5-story house just a disaster stylistically (From the front it looked like a 4-unit condo building, and I think it was finished without a planned elevator because it was either too expensive or it didn't meet local building codes) and financially because it was built and financed at pre-Crash prices) but it has to be the UGLIEST most unlivable damn million-dollar house I've ever seen. And for the final irony, the massively entitled Princess and her equally self-absorbed Dream Hubby broke up shortly after the house was finished. If that set of episodes ever shows up on any channel, it's a Must-Watch, believe me. That colossal F-up couldn't have happened to two more deserving people.

There don't seem to be any videos anywhere of those episodes but there were some good posts at the old TWoP about it and the other disaster stories from the series. The only thing I could find was a 3-minute video with Kelli and Jack "showing off" i.e. "desperately trying to find a gullible buyer for" their money pit.

^^That might be them...I never saw about half or the season. About half way through I couldn't take it anymore. Their series of shows and project was just all over the place, their decisions so stupid, I lost interest.

I thought the couple I was thinking of was in Colorado....but maybe not. Because I really don't recall. I never saw the finished house.

But your update.....wow....just confirms what I thought or recall from the episodes all those years ago. THE WHOLE THING -- them as a couple and the project (design and construction, and building site) were BEYOND a mess.

I think their house was one of -- if not THE last one in the run of the series. And I'm OK with construction hiccups, and design changes, but their project was ridiculous. MAYBE that's why I lost interest...I was just done. Too much "drama?" Would you even call what that was drama....it was just unorganized and chaotic...not in a frenzied way. They just had no idea what they were doing. It was ridiculous.

OH!! that brings to mind another show.....about homeowners doing their own repairs...NOT, NOT "Weekend warrior" and it wasn't "Rescue my Renovation" Oh, it was "Renovation Realities." THAT was it! This was couples doing their own bathrooms, or bedrooms or whatever....who had NO idea starting out how to do it. AND, or course they only had a week or less to do it in. ANd of course they argued al the time.

I distinctly remember wondering WHY couldn't HGTV have stuck with "Weekend Warriors" -- where home owners did projects.....some people knew more than others about how to do it. But none of them were out right STUPID about how to do it. None were out right UNPREPARED. There was a young couple on "Renovation Realities" who redid their kitchen. I remember it because it had to be done so inexpensively. They made the counters and everything, Painted the cabs. etc. They were fine. But by that time I think HGTV was clearly headed toward...IGNORANCE when it comes to remodeling....and aiming for "drama' so as for that series I'd say most of the people were not prepared for their project. I think there was another female couple (or friends) who redid a kitchen as well. I distinctly remember the married couple who argued all the time...and of course there had to be a scene where they cut a pipe and water spews and flood a floor...and she tries to help him tile and has no idea what she's doing, and makes it worse. So he says jus leave it and let me do it.

"Renovation Realities" and "Weekend Warriors" ...talk about blasts from the past. Great, now I'll just think of all the other shows I named in posts before Matt and Shari, Joan Steffend, Cindy Piccoli, Chris Casson Madden, Kitty Bartholomew, Michael Payne.....and on other networks Lynette Jennings, Christopher Lowell....

As a single female, let me also say I was always HIGHLY insulted when wives were afraid of power tools. And went into their "Oh poor me, I don't no nuthin' 'bout power tools." it was sickening. They acted like never seen a HAMMER for goodness sake. They could n't do ANYTHING. They were useless. It was sooo insulting.

I doubt there would be a forum for this new show-- Most Desperate Kitchen, or something like that.  I kind of like this one--it has a little old school HGTV to it with them picking homeowners and redoing a room for them. I like that they do more than just throw in some cabinets, etc.... they seem to have some good design elements and space planning.  I find them more creative and interesting than the Property Brothers.

There is also a new show called Listed Sisters, I think?  and though the sisters are nice enough and a good change from always seeing the Property Brothers, the formula on that show is just too similar each show.  They had 2 episodes in a row, and miraculously, the renovation was to be 35K for redoing a huge portion of the house in both episodes, and this 35K would increase their value by about 100K.  If they didn't already have a ton of this exact type of show on already, it might be okay, but I can't take another forumlatic property selling and buying show.  So this one is off my list quickly.

This pretty much sums up HGTV.

Now they have Log Cabin Hunters and Tiny House Hunters. All with plenty of recaps and coming ups! Re: Tiny House Hunters, why do they feel the need to recap a 200 ft home I just saw two minutes ago??? (Not that I'll be tuning into that stupid show again after seeing it once).

This channel is unwatchable without TiVo and FF.

I used to like Curb Appeal (and there also was another show very similar) except for putting an entertainment area in the front of the house.  What's that all about? When I entertain I'd like some privacy from cars going past my home.  But I loved how they'd do just a few things to perk up other houses nearby.  Where the heck did these shows go?

I was looking to see if there was a forum about "The Seventies" on CNN and I stumbled across this, and I was just looking for a design show on HGTV the other day. I didn't find one.

I loved "Design on a Dime" and "Decorating Cents" because I'm not very handy, but I could do the things they did. I wish I could remember what show I was watching because the host took a microwave cart and put a curtain around the bottom of it, but she didn't use a curtain rod, she used some sort of plastic that you could put the fabric in and still slide it like a curtain. I could never find the materials she used and I still really want to do that to my microwave cart.

Someone mentioned the backyard shows putting up pergolas, and the only reason that I know that word is because on one of the early "Design Star" seasons one of the contestants put up a pergola and the reaction of the judges was as if he made the pergola out of the bones of murdered children.

I really miss shows that teach me how to do something, instead of a glut of real estate shows.

I am not fond of McMansions, and like small homes, but every time I see "Tiny House" nation, I have to wonder what the pilgrims and pioneers would think of this.  I can't help but think they would laugh hysterically.

I get that people want to downsize, not be in debt, and want a simpler way of life.  But I just can't fathom climbing a ladder to a loft space to sleep...where I can't stand up.  I guess it has to do with the fact that I am a senior citizen and like my comforts.  Composting toilet? I don't think so, but hats off to those who are enthusiastic about this lifestyle.

And as usual, HGTV will run this trend into the ground.  Speaking of, I just saw where Skip and Joanna have a new season coming out. At least that is what I think I saw.  New season?  It seems as though their seasons have no end..constant marathons.  I like Joanna's decorating style and don't mind Chip, but how long does a "regular" season for them last?  Let's have some variety.  Please.

Speaking of which... was anyone else watching "Island Hunters" the other night?  These wackadoos were spending literally multi millions so they could be *alone* on their *own* islands, and for that they would put up with no indoor plumbing?  Not to mention the guy who kept mentioning that the island he was looking at would be "zombie proof"?  Did anyone else see that one?  I swear he didn't act like he was kidding.  But his wife didn't bat an eye...

Promos are airing the the ION LIFE had a post on July 12 saying the shows were "now airing"....so I don't know what the deal is.

I remember a show hosted by Susie Coehlo (Sonny Bono's ex) back around 1998 called Surprise Gardener. That was the show that got me hooked on HGTV. Anyone else remember it?

I do. I remember most all of the old HGTV shows, back when there were actual choices in what to watch :/ and the "G" was in HGTV.

I liked her. I had NO IDEA she was married to Sonny Bono! Learn something new every day.

Oh, man! The new Urban Oasis house in Asheville is a cluster of historic proportions. (Or non-historic, since they ruined/completely removed all of it.) I hated the designer and everything he did to that poor house. I think Scott McG. did too, but was too polite to say it.

A downtown urban loft feel with "pops" of rustic country farmhouse? Jammed with random tchotkes in every possible corner? What the hell? No thanks. If I won that house -- and of course I'm going to enter! -- and intended to live there, I'd need to totally repaint, inside and out, and give away half the furniture. I hated the black kitchen cabinets. Black, black, black in a Craftsman bungalow. I'm also not a fan of dark grout on white subway tiles, or of tiling the entire walls right up to the vaulted ceiling.

With the constant marathons one has to wonder who watches them.  Day after day after day.  If I turn it on in the morning and see any of the Property Brothers show(s), the flip show with the pretty blond and her husband, the show with Joanna and Chip, either of the Love it Or List Its, the one with Nicole....etc.  I don't tune in the rest of the day because I know exactly what will be on. They start in the morning and don't let up.

I do like "House Hunters..Where are They Now"....but they are starting to do that one to death also.  Same for Flea Market Flip.  Who watches the same people hour after hour?

I don't understand what's happening.  Have all the Scripps (isn't that the owner?) channels quit making shows, and just pass them around?

I've discovered Air Disasters on Smithsonian channel.
I can watch marathons of Salvage Dawgs, Texas Flip & Move, and have enjoyed Barnwood Builders.
Other than than, I go to the Mike Holmes shows on my DVR.

I've seen the Extreme Homes show during the morning this past week on HGTV. They showed several episodes back to back.

I've had it with the non-stop Property Brothers on HGTV. I tend to get my home show fix now on the DIY, FYI, Create, Destination America and Great American Country channels.

I really like Barnwood Builders.

I can't stand those two brothers. I never liked them much when they first started on the channel so only watched a couple times. I see commercials for their shows anytime I watch anything else on HGTV and they seem quite obnoxious just from those few seconds. I can't imagine what their shows are like now. It seems like they have 2 or 3 of them. I gave up on the regular House Hunters a few years ago too with all those people whining about no granite countertops, no stainless steel appliances and other overly picky stuff. The International one isn't too bad yet.

I think of this when I see the promo for one of those Alaska shows, and the woman says "I want running water, an indoor toilet..."

Check out the BBC show called "Escape to the Country" that's up on YouTube. The folk looking at the properties don't seem to be hung up on immediately ripping everything out of the homes they are looking at. It's quite refreshing.

Not sure it's on Youtube, but there's also a version called "Escape to the Continent", where Brits look to relocate to various countries like France, Italy and Spain. A better version of International House Hunters, it's an hour long, so they can do more. For example, if the couple is looking to start a business, they actually talk to local expats, or retirees talk to Brits who retired to the area. And amazingly, they don't always end up with a house.

I need some help with finding the name of a series, there weren't very many episodes, but I liked it. Similar to Extreme Homes, but people had taken old buildings and repurposed them into homes. I remember a gas station, the owners collected cars; a firehouse, several barns, an old bank building in a small town that turned out gorgeous, I think there was an old department store too. Can anyone remember the name. I searched HGTV's website and looked at a couple of shows, but they're not the ones I'm looking for.

I remember the show, and especially the old bank building, because it was in the town I grew up in - Spring City, PA. If I think of the name, I'll post it.

ETA: Found a FB message I sent to a high school friend about a show I was watching called "You Live in What?" that featured the bank.
