John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)

Recommended Posts

I hope he put the Pitt bull in a safe house or something. Even if those guys are stupid enough to pursue the bounty on him, there's no way they'd pull that crap after what what happened to the guys that killed Daisy...

I am really looking forward to this and Halle Berry fit in well in Gotham she has the right amount of personality that KR and for that matter John Wick just lack to counter balance the movie.  Plus I always like dealing with all the personalities that exist in this world both friend and foe.

Halle Berry wasn't on Gotham, you may be thinking of Jada Pinkett Smith?

Has to be Jada Pinkett Smith the Gotham reference can't be Catwoman

I liked the first two movies, and looking forward to the third one. But before it's released, I have theories. First, Cassian and Ares will be back. John messed them up pretty well in 2, but didn't actually kill them. And if we don't see the bodies, they aren't dead. I haven't checked IMDB, and I'm not going to either.

Second, possibly less plausible, the assassin organisation is a modern inheritance of the original assassins, the ones from Alamut. This is based on John climbing a sand dune in the trailer. Let's be honest. While the real Alamut mountain looks nothing like that, this is Hollywood we're talking about. Outside war-torn cities and the occasional pyramid, the whole middle east is one big desert.

Also, he's going to wipe out enough members of the high table that the rest call off the bounty and leave him alone. He might take them all out. I wouldn't mind seeing Winston die either. You can either play favourites or enforce the rules. Pick one. Compare what happened to Perkins vs John.

Huh. Wasn't expecting that. Pretty good, as trailers go. But look, Winston playing favourites again. Possibly more egregious than before. Oh, and Matrix shoutout. He could have delivered it like Neo, but I'm glad he stayed in character.

I've seen it! On par with the others, though more budget, more bad guys, more action, etc. And so much for my theories. Wrong at every turn. That's fine, I like surprises.

Either way, it's pretty good. I'll see it again sometime, though probably not at the cinema.

I saw it today. What a riot. Pretty much non-stop violence. I know there were probably stunt doubles, CGI, and other camera trickery involved but the fight scenes were amazing. I think Keanu Reeves is in great shape for a guy pushing 55. Halle Berry wasn't too shabby either. And her character's dogs were insane! (Nice nod to Game of Thrones' Daenerys' catchphrase, "Dracarys.")

Loved seeing the guys from The Raid as Dacascos' henchmen. Didn't love when they cut back to half-speed fighting John.

John is absolutely lethal with a firearm, but in hand to hand he's older (and beat up and tired, you would think). So what lets him win? (Other than his name in the title) His relentlessness. I always wondered about that, and we finally got an answer: So someone would remember Helen. (I'm pretty sure her family would remember her too, John.)

Looks like Morpheus and Neo ride for Chapter 4.

I saw it. Honestly, I found the relentless brutal violence to be just too much at times. I along with many people in the audience winced, gasped, eeked, and covered our eyes for some of the worse of it. The screen writer must have an easy job because there were tons of scenes with no dialogue just action and killing. The next movie focused on Wick and The King getting revenge looks promising, but I might wait for the Blu Ray to watch it.

The crazy thing is, this movie had four writers! It's not even a complex plot. The dialogue was fine, but not spectacular. Maybe they helped map out action scenes.

But here's something odd. The creator of John Wick, Derek Kolstad, gets both Written by and Based on characters created by for JW2. If he did the whole thing, then why does he need a Based on credit? I wonder if there was someone else in the mix that didn't get credit. Update: IMDB trivia says that Kyle Ward did some polish on JW2. To which I say, really? His filmography isn't exactly dripping with top shelf writing. Hollywood is crazy like that.

While I was fine with the violence, I found many gunshots extremely loud in parts. Also, I found myself kind of laughing when the two vans pulled up. I remember the police van from Terminator 2. Nice to see this movie borrowing from the classics. The Raid guys were another nod to the greats, and better used here than in Star Wars.

Saw it last night, and man, such a fun movie for action porn. Yes, JW movies will never be known for the plot, but for the choreography of the action scenes and the body count. Stahelski really frames action scenes well, with gorgeous set pieces giving additional oomph to the actual action itself.

It was well received in the theater we went to. There was a lot of clapping during the first two major fight scenes. My personal favorite was the second fight scene. It was so well choreographed it was like a dance.

Love the Matrix shoutout too! That got  a lot of applause from the audience - but I wasn’t sure if it’s because of the callback to Matrix or they were cheering John on.

Spoiler

Man, they just had to do that to Winston’s character, huh?! I thought at first he and JW we’re both in on it, just so they could get rid of the Adjudicator. But, alas, assasins are going to assassin. That was cold-blooded, Winston. And maybe, JW will finally learn no one is really on his side. Not even someone he considered a friend and saved his life just hours prior.

One exception:

[Sofia shoots Bronn] JW: Sofia!

Sofia: He shot my dog!

JW: Look, I get it.

That reminds me. I really liked the two Belgian Malinois, but didn't like how they used the horses. I was afraid that the bad guys would shoot the horses and when they didn't, I realized that it didn't make sense that they didn't shoot the horses to take down Wick.

Also, it was interesting that Wick is Belarusian and Russian Roma. I read somewhere that Keanu Reeves does speak Russian, but not well so he is probably butchering the language for we all know.

Maybe they’re horse-loving assassins. We’ve already seen a couple of dog lovers. :)

Seems in the Wick Universe, assassins have more regard for animal lives than human ones.

I was surprised when Winston betrayed John, but then when I thought about it, if Winston really wanted to kill John, he would have shot him in the head not the chest because he knew that John's suit was bullet proof. It is impossible to believe that John didn't break his back after he fell off the roof, but it was pretty convenient that the King's right hand man happened to be there to pick him up.

Also, I never understand bad guys in the movies and tv. They see the people they are working with getting their asses beat and brutally killed, yet they are jumping into the fray. I would be running in the opposite direction. I rather live to fight a less dangerous opponent another day.

The actress who played the adjudicator was not good at all.

I was surprised that my theater was packed, but then I read that the movie might beat Endgame at the box office this weekend.

The hand to hand combat scene needed a serious ten minutes of pruning.  It just went on and on.

The dogs were great.  I don't know how much of what they did was cgi, but if they were really trained dogs, the trainers did an excellent job.

Hah! I'm watching that scene going are these the guys from that Korean Indonesian movie that people make a big fuss over being in The Force Awakens and, then bitched because they didn't get to do a fight sequence?! LOL

Yep, same guys and fun to watch, glad they made it to another movie.

I really liked this movie, loved the continued world building and, look forward to Chapter 4 when Neo and Morpheus got to war against the High Table!  I loved and hated the ending. Loved it because of the team up promised in the next chapter. Hated it because Winston screwed John over.

Charon/The Consierge kicked ass but, he's so loyal to Winston that I'm worried about his prospect in the next movie.

Halle Berry didn't have a big role in this movie despite the marketing. She did well but, I'm perfectly fine never seeing Sophia again. Although, I did love her dogs.

I'm curious about Angelica Houston's character. Mostly i just want to meet these people on The High Table.

Saw it today, and my theater was almost full.  I enjoyed the movie on the whole.  It continues to be the glossiest B movie franchise around.

On the negative side, there were some bits that meandered, especially in Morocco.  And I agree the last two fights could have been trimmed a bit.  I'm mildly amused but not 100% onboard with them dragging things out because they're John's fans.  I'm okay with John using more weapons and less hand to hand.

On the positive side, it found ways to tweak the fights and keep things interesting.  The attack dogs were intimidating.  I loved some little moments in the fights.  In the second fight in the antique store, John and the one opponent were throwing each other into glass cases, and then suddenly they both realized that the cases were full of knives.  It was quick and funny.  The same with the horse kick.  I enjoyed seeing some familiar character actor faces.

Winston's betrayal was unexpected but I buy it.  He gave John a window in the last film because he thought it wouldn't blow back on him.  It did, and he won't be sentimental again.  Part of me thinks Charon is loyal, and part of me thinks Charon intends to be the next manager, and is only loyal until the opportunity presents itself.

If they make a fourth I will probably see it.  It occurred to me while watching the Bowery King and Winston that this world reminds me in many ways of Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere."

John Wick made $57M Domestic in it's opening weekend. That is more than John Wick's entire Domestic Haul and $27M more than John Will 2's opening weekend.

I think it's safe to saye we're getting a 4th movie. Which they setup beautifully.

One thing I missed Bronn (Morocco Gold Coin Guy) was a member of the High Table (at least according to a review i watched). So I guess, we met one member of the High Table.

I wondered about Charon remaining loyal to Winston. I noticed that he looked surprised or maybe upset when Winston shot John. It made me wonder if he will rethink that loyalty when John eventually comes after Winston. With the High Table and Winston gone, Charon would be positioned to take over the Continental.

Santino (from Chapter 2) was also a member, no?

Well, there's 14M reasons to jump on the fray to kill JW. But like JW said, what good is 14M if you can't spend it?

Actually you're right, his sister was appointed to the High Table and that's why he wanted her killed so he could take her place.  So yeah, that's 2 (Beradda and Gianna) plus the Man who Sits Above the Table.

So we’re on for the high table showdown. Seems like it’s a mix of  the youngish and old. Think Jeremy Irons would consider coming aboard for JW4? If they want to continue the Matrix reunions, Hugh Weaving could be fun for a cameo.

Given John no doubt broke a hell of a lot of bones in the fall, JW4 now at the very least have a 6-8 week buffer (more like 3 months) for John and The King to heal from their wounds. It’s hilarious that the timeline of the first 3 movies combined is about a month, right?

Watching the first movie again, same Doc from 1 and 3.

I loved Chapter 3 but, there is something to say about the simple elegance of the first movie.

What's this movie you speak of? I only recall one Matrix movie which was quite brilliant. They never made sequels 😜

I saw this today and my head is still spinning.  I loved all the fight scenes and I especially loved the horses kicking and those dogs were awesome.

Before seeing this, I thought this would be a trilogy and this would be the final movie, but I'm delighted that there will be a #4.  I can't wait!

disclaimer: born and raised in Belarus.

JW: I'm a child of Belarus

Me. I fucking KNEW IT!

ok so I was joking with my friend about some bad decisions film makers made. or more like passing things that don't really matter. Keanu's "Russian" was bad. but in pronunciation it was closer to Belarusian (since that language is a bit thicker and with more open vowels, that are easier for English speaker). Plus there were references to Catholicism here and there in the movies. Russia has VERY few Catholics. Based on different data anywhere between 15 and 25% of Belarusians consider themselves Catholic.

So I yeah. I was joking with my friend, saying he's probably from Belarus.  And then both of us saw JW3. and she was like... well... it's not a joke anymore lol

Watched it on Prime Video last night. What I thought was funny was how the bounty on John's head kept going up. As if someone thought that 14 million dollars wasn't worth risking their life to try and kill John Wick, but for 15 million they might try it.

Don't all three movies take place over maybe a week or two? The longest amount of rest John has probably gotten was probably the boat ride to Moracco.

There's a bigger gap between 1 and 2 based on the age of the dog.  It is a pup when he takes it from the shelter at the end of the first movie, and it's quite a bit bigger in the second.  He apparently spends some time chasing down the remnants of the Russian gang before he makes peace with the remaining leader at the beginning of 2.

But 2 and 3 happen over a week or two.  ETA: And he crosses the Atlantic four times during that.  Jet lag alone would be exhausting before considering injuries and exertion.

Finally saw this on HBO and yay none of the dogs or horses died! I did appreciate Halle going apeshit on the guys that shot her dog, bulletproof doggy vest be damned.

John seriously needs to give that wonderful pit bull a name. I loved how he jumped on him when he returned to the hotel.

Oh Winston, you made a HUGE mistake: you shot John and didn't aim for the head. Unless this will be part of some bigger doublecross you're fucked.

Can't wait for Chapter Four!
