I did my usual express watch of the immunity episode after work tonight.  It was pretty obvious from the get go that Tim was going to be the one chosen for round 2, which I then didn't watch but given what he usually likes to cook, he was never going to beat that guest chef.

Meanwhile, here's a cute story about Steph's elimination (you might need to avert your eyes, @Myriad!)

And guess what? Croissant lady auditioned for season 1 of MC AU - and she didn't get in!

Hmmm, I wonder who will win round one. Could it be Tim? I mean, it's hard to get a read, cuz the guy hardly gets any screen time. At all. Ever.

OMG! What is happening... Poh is attempting to mentor. She advised Tim about his biscuit base ...which then came out all fucked up. The guest chef must realize Poh sucks as a mentor, cuz she ran over several times to provide actual help.

Dear Matt, never say Scoop Dog again. cute-smiley-says-no-emoticon.gif

That is a nice story about Steph.  What great friends she made during this competition!  I thought it was interesting that she did a stint at Lune, where she baked hundreds of croissants.  i don't feel like watching the end again, but I don't remember them mentioning that.  Did I just miss it?

It was also interesting that Steph knew a recipe would be her downfall because she's always had reading challenges.

Watching that episode, it dawned on me that maybe this season is an audition for the actual Shannon's (snif!) replacement.  My beloved Billie and Poh-whom-I-never-knew don't exactly shine in those shoes.  Mat, though, he's got it.  Hands-on help, encouraging, enthusiast, the ever extrovert he was in his season.  Maybe even more driven by the sheer novelty of the position.  Shannon did phone it in last season, a change was due.  I'd put my eternally close-to-elimination black apron on the line that Mat is back in S12, only him.  Spare my Billie, she must feel how she doesn't fit in a public mentor role. One-on-one would better suit her is what I feel.

There's no way I can have yet another kitchen implement, namely an ice cream churner, in my wardrobe-sized kitchen, but if I could, you can bet your Christmas ugliest sweater that I'd be down with Ben's chocolate and whiskey ice cream.  I wanted to lick my monitor but remembered just in time that it needs a little dusting.

Oh!  Look a that!  Not available in my country!  Woe me!  😄  That said, I'm not advert to Steph as a whole and sure don't wish her any bad things, so thanks to @babs1226 for the quick summary.

Every time the camera caught Christina up the gantry, whatever she was wearing made it look like she was in practice mode for green team. ef.gif

I like Tim. Not as much as Derek, Tessa, Nicole and Simon but I like him very much. I don't have to worry about him busting out panna cottas every round (Omg I hope not! Opinion will change if he does!!!!) and for a non dessert guy he did very well.

Seems like a nice, inoffensive fellow too.

I'm at the point where if you panna cotta or parfait I will side eye you so much.

You definitely need to save some side eye up for Larissa. I am starting to think she is the new Elise!

I don't think they have had tonight's "cook identical dishes whilst separated by a wall" challenge for a couple of seasons. I don't know that it really tests cooking skills so much as testing the rapport contestants have with one another. Which is why Team Blonde (sorry, the Red Team) did well, because Nicole and Christina are friends, roommates in the house and often cook stuff together. And I think the ONLY reason Larissa and Ben were safe was purely because everyone else did worse.

Ben is top 10. *facepalm*

According to Sportsbet

Spoiler

the most likely two to get booted are Tati or Anushka. They're not the longest priced hamsters left but those who are longer prices, such as Ben and Christina, are safe!

I was neutral about her at first but we are heading towards dislike territory now. She is a one note, panna cotta maker and sometimes her damn panna cottas don't even work!!!!!

ETA: Panna cotta is considered a lowly dessert in my house! We make it when I am lazy as it is easy and you just bust out the gelatine. Not many skills in use!

My brain is refusing to process that fact!

Also, watching George spit as he said 'Tessa and Tati' was truly hideous!

I don't think Ben and Larissa should have been safe - Ben's pannacotta was liquid in the middle and his sorbet was the most disgusting colour!

I wanted Simon to be safe but why on earth did he push to do a dessert that Sandeep (is that his name????) had never even heard of?

At least Anoushka didn't suggest a layer cake!  LOL  Imagine the yelling then!

Derek was also correct that there was no way her shards were 6 x 8!  Unless she was measuring in inches.

Still trying to fathom Ben in the top 10!   ???????????????????????

I think it's good to remember that Ben's entry into the top 10 was mainly luck of the draw.  I really don't think he will get much farther.  At least we haven't seen any blatant manipulation (so far) like they used last year to get that Ben into the final.  IMO they really ended up with egg on their faces at the end.

Other than the fact that they needed an even number for the challenge, is there a specific reason Tim got to sit this one out? I don't tend to watch the immunity pin episodes so wonder if he won something. Or was it just another good way to protect Tim?

I know I'm in the minority but I kind of like Ben.

So, who's going home? I'm going with Sandeep.

It seems all is right in the Sportsbet universe again because the most likely candidate to leave was Sandeep and so it proved. He was definitely going to struggle from here on if he was unwilling to venture out of his Indian comfort zone so it was the right decision, I think. I wonder if his Indian dishes were really the best the judges have ever had from any contestant, even Sashi?

Or that guy from years ago whose main claim to fame after MC was having a wholemeal flour for making raita in Woolworths (which I only remember/know as I found a container of it a couple of months ago in the back of my pantry! - well out of date!).

I'm so pleased Simon's molasses was good enough to 'paint Gary's house with' and kept him safe.

Tati's dessert looks like it escaped the 1970's but failed to bring its good friend the 'cheese cubes on toothpicks stabbed into an orange with it!

Sandeep's rice pudding looked like he had forgotten to remove half the foil he had covered it with to keep it warm - made my teeth hum!

Sorry to see Sandeep go!  His exit interview is a little heartbreaking; I wish we could have seen what he might have done without the injury.

https://10daily.com.au/entertainment/tv/a190620rywkd/masterchef-how-sandeeps-back-injury-broke-his-spirits-20190620

Sounds like only Derek's & Anushka's dishes were successful, although there were some intriguing ideas in everyone's efforts (not that I'll ever make my own beetroot molasses, or verjuice, but kheer & puri? maybe, just with less saffron & without the silver leaf).

Great challenge concept, both for highlighting our over-reliance on processed sugar, and in forcing them to think on the spot.

I could eat Derek's breakfast panna cotta every day of the week! It looked fantastic.

I feel Simon is one of the weakest contestants there. His plating is one of the worst along with Tim, Ben and Tati. He easily could have went home since his dish was incomplete and his molasses was more like a sauce consistency than actual molasses. I also think he is a judges' favourite along with Tessa and Tim.

Tati annoys me. Stop with the banana leaves!

I still can't believe Ben is top 10. And Tim. And Tati. And Simon. And Anushka. And maybe Christina and Nicole. This season's crop is the weakest in a while.

Also, if Sandeep's dish truly didn't taste good, fine, but I can't believe he got rapped for being unoriginal making rice pudding given how many effing panna cottas were in the episode.

Larissa and Ben have both made so many, I thought they'd just melt into one giant, wobbly blob when they joined forces. Yeah, no shit they managed to pull off a decent approximation of the simple dish they've already cooked 5,000 times on this show.

I swear I remember that in (far) earlier seasons, the judges would eventually start penalizing contestants who made the same things over and over, no? Am I imagining this?

So yes.  I've been to France many times, where croissants are everywhere anytime, and these looked soooo overcooked compared to what I've seen/eaten. Almost burnt. Fancy for the sake of being fancy, no thank you, fancy chef of nothing.

Larissa is one of the first contestants I remembered for the way she fucked up her first mystery box with that sad, sad pannacotta. And she kept on doing those.  A girl has to grow and kill the adversity.

JeeZeus!  It's the thing I love about Simon, the constant twinkle in his eyes, the sheer passion about cooking and joy of living.  It would never have dawned on me that one would associate it with drugs. People, man. They suck.

I had that tough as well.  Going out for originality, how ordinary is that? Gosh, I'm almost never mad, but this time I was. - almost.  Larissa fucked up her very first mystery box with a subpair pannacotta.  And she kept making them over and over again.

Another thing that bugged me to no end was that the best captain ever, Derek, chose to follow the lead of the worst captain ever. I wish I had a recording of me yelling at my monitor.  Because I WAS yelling not nice things. What was he thinking?

Not saying that I'm particularly happy with the ending, but as long as my Simon is safe, it's another day I can live with.

Oh, by the way, I'll be having visit this week end and plan on cooking a coconut pannacotta.  HAHAHA! *someone please kill me*

Final elimination challenge... Simon, Jesus God, how hard is it to make a freaking crumble for your figs. He clearly wasn't going home cuz they featured him talking about how he might be sent home a billion times. Also, I know "push push Nush" is not really pornographic, but it just sounds like it is.

His cauliflower looked amazing.

The banana tart looked good, except my OCD kicked in when some of them fell out when she flipped it and she put just one back upside down so it had no caramel on it and just kept featuring in shots in all its pale glory.

Derek's doughnuts looked so yum!

I am so over pannacotta!

Does no pressure test tomorrow mean no eliminations this week?  Or will there be one at the end so they start next week with 9 people, get rid of one on Monday and go back to even numbers for a team challenge on Wednesday?

👁👁👁👁👁

Who is in the bottom?

Anushka.

No pressure test this week so no bottom 3. Only 1 elimination at the end of the week.

I loved the sound of Tessa's Milo dessert.

Derek might be legit crazy. He shoots for the stars but he misses more than he hits. Even if he had filled his doughnuts to the brim, he wouldn't have won because his dough was dense.

I felt like the invention test really separated the contenders from the pretenders. Derek, Larissa, Tessa are really coming into their own. Simon too, I guess, although I did not like that he used the smoking gun and confit method again. Tim got a massive reality check. Ben went back to being invisible. Anushka went back to her old tricks. So did Tati. Can we have a massive culling of 4 or 5 people this week?

Interestingly, they even sell Vegemite in Finland! (I've never tasted it though because it sounds a bit gross to me… but perhaps I should? 😄)  I am, however, ashamed to admit that I'd never even heard of Milo. Jokes aside I really think they need to do something to limit the number of panna cottas made. It's not just us on here crying foul.

The drastic rise in panna cotta is akin to the dramatic editing on my kitchen rules over on channel 7. It's really noticeable and ridiculous.

Masterchef is a great show but they need to put in rules to stop the ridiculous from happening like that year where they had this guy who just made ice creams. He couldn't really cook he was like a big joke and ice creamed his way into the finale. Their only saving grace was they had a winner who could cook.

In general I've always taken this competition more seriously than I do MKR, Masterchef US or Masterchef Canada but at least those other shows force their contestants to cook different things (especially Masterchef Canada).

Every season MC Au lets some idiot get away with parfait, ice cream, dome moulds, panna cotta and they ride all the way to the end while better cooks who take risks get the axe.

I'm not even anti dessert. I adore the bake off shows and all the food network baking shows. The desserts on MC Au are really repetitive.

OMG, so many ice creams and panna cottas.

In fairness, several of them did have unique desserts.  Tessa is probably the most impressive of the dessert people, a tarte tatin (and she made a mille feulle).  Larissa two desserts looked pretty good as well (I love a good german pancake).

I will say I do find it a bit ironic.  Christina made some BBQ ribs in the challenge.  The judges kind of slammed her being all "its really basic".   Yet the 20 ice creams isn't?

While Tati is starting to become a one trick pony, I kind of want her to stay, simply because her cooking does make her stick out from everyone else.  It was kind of bad, when in the first challenge, almost everyone made a salmon confit with broth and noodles.  Also Tati did crack me up when she said she hated the vegemite and the milo.  I was totally expecting her to say yeah I hate tomato sauce as well.

I think most western countries have a Milo equivalent (and Milo itself is very popular in much of Asia) -- like Ovaltine and Nestle Quik.

Speaking of, there were some pretty uncreative uses of Milo. Milo ice cream already exists! No panna cottas at least, but the ice cream/mousse/sorbet + tuile/praline + crumb/compote thing is just as common and equally lazy. Bake an effing cake, you cowards.

The contestants trying to do talking heads for the best-selling ingredients box cracked me up. "Yep... those are common ingredients." "Nothing in here surprised me."

We've been far too hard on Larissa lately, I have decided. Far from being a lazy dessert cook who only makes panna cottas, tonight you will see her really put herself out of her comfort zone and take a huge risk by making...a parfait. 🙄 So glad it didn't pay off and Tessa won instead.

Derek seems to be losing the plot a bit. In what universe did it seem a good idea to add raw meat to native yams (which, by the way, are rather an obscene-looking vegetable, or is that just my filthy mind acting up again? 😂)

I am enjoying this week so far.  It's nice to see more than one cook where there is no fear of going into elimination.  Everyone is so much more relaxed and, in some cases, more creative.

I admire Larissa's guts for sticking to her guns, but since her goal was to get into the immunity challenge, and the guy who was choosing the winner told her to do savory, it really was just a protest dish.  I'm glad Tessa won.

It's really kind of disappointing this season that so many of the top 10 aren't all that great with plating.

I don't object to Larissa's use of panna cottas, etc (& she does a lot of different things). She seems to have a real mastery of flavors, & that's why her versions get praised. It's a bit like a savory cook being a master of sauces & broths.

Glad Tessa won, though. I don't really want to see anyone get a pin at this stage but apparently it will take a perfect score (it's probably the guest chef who's done it, but Tessa or Simon wouldn't shock me at this point. Nicole is still a bit of a mystery to me.)

Well, I watched the immunity episode tonight for once.  I am not sure why because the ones with Billie mentoring are kind of excruciating.  I got the feeling that more than once Tessa just wanted to tell Billie to get lost and stop hovering because really, apart from helping her save that split reduction sauce, she was, in the old Aussie vernacular, "as useless as tits on a bull". 🤣  No surprise to see the guest chef beat Tessa but I liked him and enjoyed watching what he made from the chosen ingredient pair.

Get ready for lots of tears tomorrow night because I bet you anything the guests for the meal are friends/family members/significant others.

I once became friend with an Aussie bloke through another forum and we exchanged gifts. Of course he would send me Vegemite and I would send him maple syrup.  I nearly killed myself through a heart attack by treating it like peanut butter.

My absolutely unforgettable episode of last season is when Khan was facing a professional chef and chose Vegemite over peanut butter to trick said chef and went on to concoct that absolutely maniacal dish. I still think that the producers chose to kill him at the last three rather than seeing him face Sashi in the finale because they wanted Sashi to win.

Never been to Australia but tried Marmite while in the UK.  Gack.  Must be an acquired thing.

Miko looks like Nestle Quik, only with malt.  So...yum.

What, exactly, is tomato sauce in Australia?  Is it like ketchup or more like our canned tomato sauce or something completely different?  I’m truly wondering.
