Longmire - General Discussion

We've been bingeing Longmire for a couple of weeks now.

1) Robert Taylor is perfectly cast.  It wasn't until I went to IMDB to check out some of his other work that I realized that the "Wyoming" sheriff is from Australia.  Looked at one of his earlier movies and found it weird to see him speaking with an Australian accent, but with that same dulcet tone.

2) I wish Vic had been shot instead of Branch.  Sorry . . . but her skill as an actress is almost as bad as that of Cora Grantham in Downton Abbey.  That stupid simpering lip pucker to show whatever emotion she's trying to portray.  Everyone else IS their character:  Walt, Henry, Ruby, Ferg.  She looks to me like her thought is, "I am an actress playing a deputy sheriff."  Oh . . . and button up your shirt, buttercup . . . and see if they have one in a larger size.

A huge thumbs up on this.  Which was a big part of why I found the last episode so cringe-worthy.

Haven't gotten there yet, but I know what's going to happen.  Which would have been great if a different actress played the part so that we could be happy for them instead of wanting Walt to come to his senses.

Just watched the episode last night where Ferg was transporting the prisoner.  It was definitely pointing to something hinky going on.  When the truck pulled up in front of the sheriff's car, I got nervous.  When the other car pulled up behind Ferg's, I knew it was not good.

I had to go online to see what was going to happen.  Otherwise, I think I'd have had to stay up (way past my bedtime) to watch the next episode.

Whew.  I love The Ferg.

I had to do the same thing. I parceled out the episodes to make the final season last longer so I didn't watch two at once. But I really needed to know if Ferg was OK!

We finished watching the entire series.  Some people online absolutely HATED the last episode.  I was okay with it.  At least Walt wasn't going to sit home, bemoaning the fact that Vic was still going to work as a deputy, coming home with exciting tales while he was just feeling useless.  Having Walt's daughter as Vic's boss would have been an interesting dynamic to observe.  Talk about him being in the middle!!!!

I loved seeing him out in the wide open spaces, alone, on his horse, looking for treasure in that special place Lucian told him about.  And the cell phone was a great way of saying, "I'm still moving forward and learning and accepting new ideas."

My only confusion is:  He had at least one intimate encounter with the first lady, he told the second lady (the psychiatrist) that he was uncomfortable having sex because he and Martha had waited until marriage to consummate their relationship, but then he went right back at it with Vic.  So which is it?  Or was it just a polite way to keep the psychiatrist at arm's length?

I felt the same way about Vic. By the end of the series I hated most everyone except Matthias, White Horse, Ferg and Henry.

Her lip puckering and acting like she was the hottest s*&t to hit Wyoming drove me nuts.

Ditto although I had some mixed feelings about Nighthorse. I liked Zach, though.

Walt was pretty much an ass the whole season and Vic was like a teeny-bopper fawning over a teacher.  Ugh.

Why do so many tv shows portray female characters as too stupid to use birth control?

Now that Vic is pregnant, we have this weird, out of the blue scene of her with Travis.  I guess that was to add mystery ss to who is the baby daddy, but it just makes me dislike her more.

Plus the fact that whilst pining over Walt, she's sleeping with both Travis and Eamonn at the same time to set up the "who is the daddy" scenario.  It really made her look like an idiot.

Did anyone else get the feeling they changed writers or hired a new showrunner in the fifth season (or late in the 4th)?

After four seasons, suddenly we start seeing Vick in her underwear and her deputy shirt unbuttoned in a very unprofessional manner, ridiculous shootouts, more bar room brawls than we saw in the first four seasons combined, and unbelievable storylines (a father purposely murdering his son?,  Walt being able to track down the elusive head of the Irish mob in a few days when the FBI could not in years?).

It's very Dallas-like.  ( And I liked Dallas, but it was a nighttime soap opera. I think of Longmire as more of a quality TV show.)

I watched the whole series in real time and then had to seek this out, years later, because the end still bugs me. I'm glad to see some others feel a little lost about where the end-of-series

Spoiler

Walt/Vic romance

came from. That said, I would totally be in for a sequel with Sheriff Matthias trying to navigate his conflicting worlds but apart from that, the end sort of killed it for me.

I hear you.  It was such a crushing disappointment for me as well.  Such sterling writing right up until the end at which point they cave in and present such a mundane, predictable ending.

I have watched every episode multiple times except the last episode - I turn it off as soon as the icky nonsense starts.

My husband is a huge fan of the books but would not even watch the last season of the show, he was so disappointed. I hated the arc of Cady getting involved with kidnapping the native child for medication.....she should have let the teacher go to the tribal council since she was a tribal member. It just felt so forced.

Avoiding reading this thread until I finish the series (hubby and I are a couple of episodes into S6 now) but I just had to come here and giggle at a conversation hubby and I had tonight while watching. I cannot STAND that the show keeps implying that there's "something" between Walt and Vic when they have zero romantic chemistry whatsoever, but when I said something to hubby about it he said he thought Walt seemed interested but didn't want to be unprofessional. And this is from the guy who when we were watching X-Files (original run) was a staunch NoRomo. Ha! Lord help me with this one.

Heh, interesting to see different takes on the theme.  I'm in your corner, not a whiff of chemistry there.  Vic is like a teenager lusting after one of her teachers.

Haven't watched it for over a year, but the one thing I remember about the last season is how much smaller and tighter her uniform shirts got . . . with what seemed to be one less button buttoned in every episode.

At one of the Longmire Days events (normally held every July) the sheriff of the town was welcoming the cast and mentioned something about making her wear the right sized uniform if she was working for him.

Knocked out more episodes of S6 tonight. Sorry to see Lucien go, I loved that tough old goat. I think he would have been smarter than to pile up more and more of what looks like guilt on Walt's part, but he did have that throwaway line before he committed suicide to remind us he had Alzheimer's, so maybe his judgement was slipping more than he realized. (And yes, I now know he left a note and Walt's case has been dropped. Thank GOODNESS. I was so tired of it.)

I feel sorry for Travis. I know he's a doofus, but he's got a huge heart and he deserves better than the way Vic has been treating him. Not every guy would be willing to just step up the way that he did, not knowing if the baby a woman was carrying after one night with him was even his. She can be dismissive all she wants, but the time she barged in on him looking for breakfast and agreed to come over that night for steaks when he said she needed more iron, shows me she was very comfortable with him and also wasn't as annoyed by him as she wanted to pretend. Sad that he had to find out from Walt that she lost the baby. 😞

I think the annoying AF mayor might be playing the new Hector. He's certainly an arrogant motormouth and isn't very tall. It would fit his profile IMO to go totally overkill trying to frame anyone associated with Walt, and it would be like him to be in cahoots with Malachi too. He's pretty determined to bring Walt down.

EDIT - Could also be Monte. He just disappeared after Walt and Ferg searched his apartment for the thumb drives of info, but no way is he gone for good. He had an irrational hatred for Walt and was already involved into looking into his life. He could have easily found out details about Hector and how to play him (completely OTT though, which would also be in character).

Before I forget to mention, Henry's deadpan line to Jacob a few episodes back - "I have been racially profiled" - had me in stitches. I love Henry so much.

@Taryn74 it's been fun to see your comments. I didn't binge the last season, allowed myself just one episode a week when they came out so as to stretch things as long as possible.  Because of that I had to stay off of PTV in case someone spilled the beans - which actually happened on another, clearly marked as NO SPOILERS site. I was just livid.  It really spoiled things for me.

So enjoy the rest of the season and looking forward to your comments.

And Henry, oh Henry, he's the bomb. I adore him 50 times more than any other character.  Doesn't hurt that it's LDP playing the part!

I'll be sure to keep commenting, then! I didn't before now because I didn't know if anyone still cared about the show at all, LOL. I would just go through and read episode threads on the archived forum. Too many times I would catch myself wanting to respond to a post, though, which doesn't exactly work when it's archived, ha ha.

I'm glad Henry is more back to "normal" now. It's always a toss up when Netflix takes over the writing for a show. (Don't get me STARTED on the final season of The Killing. It's been a couple of years since we watched it but I still feel rage over that nonsense.) Walt became almost unbearably stupid and grouchy, and still mostly is, but I'm back to loving Henry this season, I love where they've taken Travis, Jacob is far more interesting and bearable, and I really love what they've done with Matthias. Another genuinely good person who was way too one-note the first season or so. Cady is still a cow eyed dumbass, but hey. We can't have it all.

Finished all but the very last episode tonight.

Not Bob! First time I think this show has genuinely made me shed a couple of tears. Damn it, Bob.

I totally thought Cowboy Bill might be Meg, though. Ha!

When Vic's dad showed up my first thought was, great, first we've got the Irish Mob and now we find out Vic's heir to the Italian Mob? Heh. (Gotham reference)

Travis where are yoooouuuu? Please come back before Vic does something stupid like sleep with Walt. I'm sure the scene with her learning to brush the horse was supposed to be all sexy or something. It just made me throw up a little in my own mouth.

So neither of my above guesses about Not!Hector were right, but in retrospect redheaded whatshisface should have been at the top of the list, too. Glad he's dead for good now. Go Ferg!

Walt totally had that picture of "dead" Shane Mauldoon made to trick the dirty FBI guy into giving up Malachi, didn't he?

Why out of the thousand or so people in the county on the lookout for a silver Suburban, was Henry the only one to be suspicious when he actually saw it? Jeebus.

Walt's still working my last nerve. Just in general, but especially when it comes to Jacob. It would be different if he still suspected Jacob of having something to do with Martha's death, but good grief. You just look like a thundering dumbass at this point.

I feel sorry for Mandy. She's absolutely right, Cady gets to leave the Rez and go home every night. Mandy has to be there dealing with people who now hate her by proxy, day in and day out. For Cady to be Henry's goddaughter, she sure is clueless when it comes to dealing with the Cheyenne with any sort of sensitivity.

As much as I adored the whole series, the final season is not one that I go back and rewatch.  They really screwed up Walt royally.  He had always been so supportive of Cady yet when she shoots and kills a guy he's nowhere to be found to get her through the trauma.

Welp, the deed is done. Literally. I hated it so, so much. I tried to make a crucifix in front of the screen so I wouldn't have to see it but my husband just laughed at me.

How old is Walt supposed to be? I figure him for 60ish. Am I way off? Or have the writers never met any 60ish year old men? Because unless he was stashing some viagra away somewhere I really don't think he would have the .....stamina..... for the multitude of positions they tortured us with.

Moving on.

Malachi is dead, finally! Darius is dead, finally! Hate that they got to Marilyn first, though. She was an odd one but I liked her. I laughed when she was sitting on Walt's porch trying out different bird calls until she found one that caught his attention.

Beverly is such a hoot. I loved her scene with Ferg practicing his apology and her telling him it was bullsh!t, Meg was way too savvy for that. Ha!

Hate that we didn't see Travis one last time. Vic really did him wrong.

Like that Nighthorse ended up doing a few dirty things but wasn't really dirty himself. That lines up with how he played the character, and it opened the door for Henry to see that the casino really was a boon for their people and take over it himself.

Cady as sheriff. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Excuse me while I go spend the next 95 years laughing my ass off.

All i can do is tell you how sorry I am that I couldn't warn you.  SOOOOOOOO sorry.  I just, well........spoilers and all.  I was spoiled and it was a million times worse than I had ever envisioned. I had my hands over my eyes the whole time; it was so gross just to think about it and then in living color, well, ewwwwwwwww.

Robert Taylor was in his 50's and Katie "Tight Shirt" Sackoff in her 30's when this was made.  It's not so much the age (although all of that gray chest hair - gag) but the total lack of chemistry between them.

Loved it wen Malachi and Darius bit the dust although you knew that was inevitable.

Also hated that Travis entirely disappeared with no further references or anything.  That was not very neighborly.

Poor old Ferg.

Don't know why the heck they had to kill off Marilyn.  That was just pointless.

Cady as sheriff was just ludicrous, what a stupid idea, totally. I loved Zachary, however.

I waffle on Henry taking over the casino but at least we know it will be done right and the tribe will benefit.

I miss Matthias so much.  He really grew on me during the whole run.

I have never re-watched the finale past the first half it is so distasteful to me.  What a letdown.

I, too, wanted to warn you that this was right up there with the worst series finale (tied with "St. Elsewhere") in the history of television.

The high spot of the finale for me was seeing Walt riding on his horse and stopping to answer his cell phone.  He was willing to finally enter the world of modern technology.

Ha ha ha, no worries. I knew they would eventually throw Vic and Walt together, no escaping it. In the words of Haymitch Abernathy, "It's a TV show!" I am grateful that they waited until the final episode at least, because it was every bit of vomit inducing that I thought it would be. Heh.

Really? Wow. I easily took him for 10 years older. Maybe it was the befuddled/sourpuss expression he always wore. Normally I go for the quiet, loyal type (you know my love for Luke on GG, heh) but something about Walt always just set me off more than attracted me. And lack of chemistry - for SURE. Zero, zilch, nada, nothing there whatsoever. It was like watching a pair of sock puppets make out.

Me too. I hated when Walt fired him so soon, especially after doing something that Walt himself would have done in a heartbeat.

Bahahaha. I vaguely remember watching St. Elsewhere as a kid, too young to really get all the implications but still thinking 'huh?' about that finale. At least this wasn't as much of a letdown as LOST for me.

Ugh, I hated that part. No offense, LOL. I HATED the running gag of Walt refusing to carry a cell phone. It's not like he had a job which didn't really depend on him being reachable at any given time. It would be like him refusing to take calls on a weekend or something. Some jobs you just can't set your own hours. Don't like it, find another job. Jeez.

I am about halfway through Season 3 and having my doubts about going any further - reading through this thread pretty much tells me I don't want to go any further. Couldn't stand Vic from the start (she was a Homicide Detective back in Philly? Really?) am annoyed with block-headed Branch this season and what Walt needs more than his own cellphone is a refresher course on standards of admissible evidence.

I do love the New Mexico scenery, which often, amusingly, looks absolutely nothing like Wyoming.

Regretfully passing on the rest of the series.

I watched the entire series and I loved it.

1. I liked most of the characters but really loved Walt, Henry, and Mathias. Honorable mention to Ferg and Branch. Walt and Henry I loved day one but Matthias, Branch, and Ferg all really grew on me as we got to know them.

2. I don’t get all the Vic/Katie hate. I thought she was the right character and actress for the show. I thought the character was flawed for sure who didn’t always make the right decisions personally, but I liked her. And she was exactly the right cop character.

3. I hated they killed off Branch and that his father was the one that killed him. Brutal.

4. I could see the chemistry between Walt and Vic and I get once he was quitting he went there but it definitely was a bad idea all around.

5. Walt is generally pretty smart but Cady as sheriff? She doesn’t have the temperament to be a cop/sheriff. AT ALL. And she’s sleeping with one of the deputies…not a good start.

6. The no cell phone was a funny gimmick but in reality no way a sheriff wouldn’t have one.

7. Agree with the poster (AZChristian) who said Walt slept with Lizzie (the show def implied they did) but the acted uncomfortable sleeping with the psychiatrist saying he and his wife waited and then slept with Vic. I think you were right, he just didn’t ultimately didn’t want the psychiatrist. Or the writers just forgot…

I just watched this entire series on Netflix. Wow, what a ride! I wish I would've been watching it while I could participate in the individual threads.

I guess the one thing I wanted to comment on was Henry's distinctive sans-contractions speech pattern. I always took that to be an individual affectation more than what the writers thought that regional or native speech patterns would be like. I think the guy who chooses to answer the phone with "It's a beautiful day at the Red Pony Bar and continual soiree" just kinda thinks no contractions sounds cool! LOL.

Actually that's true to the books.  The author, Craig Johnson, had Henry "speak" that way in the series.  LDP used to joke about the Contraction Police watching his every word onscreen.  As I recall, he slipped once and everyone caught it!

Dark Winds premieres this weekend.  It's based on the Tony Hillerman book and stars Zahn McClarnon who plays Joe Leaphorn as the Navajo Tribal police lieutenant with Kiowa Gordon playing Jim Chee as the newbie.

Interestingly enough Lou Diamond Philips played the part of Jim Chee in the 1991 version of The Dark Wind.  Both productions are co-produced by Robert Redford.

Just started watching this and only up to episode three or four not sure. Last one I watched was about the ex mafia guy or whatever he was who faked his own death by setting a corpse on fire in the barn with the horses that he neglected for God knows how long. The whole thing was just disgusting to me especially the whole saga about that poor horse, laying there with its burns. I was hoping he would have an even more horrible death than he did after setting those innocent horses on fire. And let me tell you the whole thing made no sense if it was supposed to be that he committed suicide where does the fire come in? Did he shoot himself in the head and then set himself in the barn on Fire? There was no mention of this. I thought the show was going to be a lot better than it is, but there seems to be some really idiotic inconsistencies. and it’s not playing so well that we have a Hispanic actor, playing a native American in one of the lead parts and scattered throughout here and there probably like last night when we saw Martinez.
