"But I think, in that particular instance, it was a lot more difficult because I was still recovering from my surgery. I had my surgery and then 10 days later I went to work, which maybe wasn't the best idea. Most people take about a month or three off before they return to work, so it was definitely made more difficult by that. But as far as being a lead of a show or a film — regardless if it's action or if it's emotional — in whichever ways it's taxing." "The challenge is sort of outweighed," she adds. "The accomplishment and the trust that people put in you to do that role and then there's also the vibrancy of being able to come on set and set the mood and the tone and the trust being put into it is something that's been such an honor. And I love my experience in [Batwoman]. I'm so grateful that we got to achieve everything that we did and I'm proud of everyone that worked on it. I'm proud of myself for working under sort of interesting circumstances, you know, with the recovery and all. I would definitely do [TV] again. I just think that it was also time for me to take a break to fully heal and then return." Rose elaborates that her decision to leave the superhero series wasn't just due to her injuries. "It wasn't so much [the injury], especially because after we wrapped up we didn't get to finish the real finale because of COVID," she says. "You know, you have time in quarantine and sort of isolation to just think about a lot of different things and what you want to achieve in life and what you want to do. I think for both [me and the producers], it was a great opportunity to have a dialogue about a lot of things. I respect them so much and they've been so respectful to me." "I think it was actually a beautiful way to do something, especially since that was the first time it's ever been done — the first time Batwoman has ever been played in live-action and that she was LGBTQ. I'm very honored to have been able to play her." And as far as any advice she may have for Javicia Leslie, who will portray the next Batwoman, Ryan Wilder, Rose says she has no doubt Leslie has this down pat. "None! I think she definitely knows what she's doing and she seems fantastic," Rose says. "I think that honestly, I was so proud and so happy when I was told who would be replacing me. Trini August 11, 2020 Share August 11, 2020 Even though she makes a point not to say anything negative about the show/producers/etc., I tend to think that Rose was not treated as well as she should have been, if she was expected to work so soon after her injury and surgery. There was probably a lot of pressure (not just on her) to not shut down the production from the network and studio. These quotes make me think it's more likely that Rose may come back for a guest stint to officially hand over the mantle to the new Batwoman. Link to comment

That was one of my first thoughts, honestly - that she or WB's publicity department (right before reportedly about a quarter to a third of them got fired*, but moving on) is setting up potential Special Guest Star appearances in the future - officially handing over the Batwoman mantle, the series finale, and so on. * On the bright side, we are all about to find out the answer to the question, can the CW's marketing get any worse? 1 1 Link to comment

Trini August 23, 2020 Share August 23, 2020 'Batwoman boss teases how Ryan Wilder 'puts her stamp' on the Bat legacy' Quote During the Legacy of the Bat panel at DC FanDome, host Nyambi Nyambi (The Good Fight) asked Dries how Javicia Leslie's Ryan Wilder, the new Batwoman, would fit into the larger legacy of the Bat. Dries said that's exactly the story of season 2. "At first, she doesn't fit," said Dries. "She doesn't fit literally. She makes it fit her. In making it fit her, she makes the Bat accessible to this whole other world of people who normally might not have a hero to look up to. So, she puts her stamp on the legacy." <..> "Kate Kane has disappeared in season 2, and it was controversial to the fans because of course they love Kate Kane, so of course we're going to keep her part of the show," said Dries. "But [Rose's exit] also gave us this really unique opportunity to create a new Batwoman. I decided to make up a character named Ryan Wilder who is the opposite of Kate Kane. Ryan Wilder is a character that Batwoman needs to protect. It just provided a new rich storytelling device for us." Leslie, who is the first Black woman to play Batwoman, also appeared on the panel and opened about what her casting means to her and she hopes everyone else. "What I love about DC, what I love about WB, what I love about [Greg] Berlanti is that you have these iconic characters, and they've done this amazing job of making them so many different ethnicities and shapes and sizes, and things that weren't as typical as you may have imagined when you were a kid," said Leslie, who also appeared on the BAWSE: Females of Color Within the DC Universe earlier that day. She says her connection to the part of Ryan Wilder, the newest iteration of Batwoman, was immediate as she and the character share a "quirky but ‘I’m a boss if I have to be' type of mentality.'" Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries says Leslie was the obvious choice from her first audition: "Javicia blew everyone else away." When it comes to the physicality required to play a superhero, Leslie already had a leg up. "I’m very active in my personal life," she says, “so being able to allow that to be my work, that’s heaven for me. I do Muay Thai. I do fitness training. I run. Anything that’s active I’m always down for, so this is going to be like playing on the playground every day." ... The opportunity to bring her own approach to Batwoman is the thing Leslie is most excited for. "There’s not many actors that get this opportunity to play in a world that you can continue to develop and expand on for a decade," Leslie says. Anyway - Nice to see some promo for Javicia. It's just weird that she has to talk about the role when they haven't even shot anything yet. Also they seem to want to emphasize that she's physically up for the role; however I hope WB has reviewed and improved their safety procedures/etc., and hired several Black stuntwomen, so that they're not recasting again a season later. Part of me wonders if Ryan Wilder will only be Batwoman for a while... if Alice will have a gravely injured Kate off somewhere captive/recuperating and she'll come back later, all healed up with a new face. Ryan Wilder could stick around as a main cast member, just not as Batwoman (perhaps as another recognizable comic book heroine -- I'm still holding out hope that Ryan Wilder is an alias). The showrunner has been clear that she doesn't want to kill off Kate Kane, but I don't know if that's because she doesn't want to add to the dead TV lesbian count or because she plans to bring the character back. The showrunner has been clear that she doesn't want to kill off Kate Kane, but I don't know if that's because she doesn't want to add to the dead TV lesbian count or because she plans to bring the character back. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it pans out. I'll watch at least for a while, regardless, and I hope it's just as good as, or better than, season one. I think they weren't going to kill her off for both those reasons. However, I highly doubt Ruby Rose, or even Kate Kane, is coming back to be a regular. Maybe a short arc or as recurring. MG said that he loves the Batwoman show and that he "really loved the casting of Ruby Rose" (who's leaving the show). He also said that he "always felt kind of bad" for Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries because "that's a tricky show to do, really because, how do you - how do you make it different from Arrow, but still be true to, you know, the Batman mythology. And look, let's be honest, Green Arrow, the comic book character, has always been a Batman knockoff."Geoff Boucher: "Oh yeah. He had an Arrow car, an Arrow cave."MG: "An Arrow car, an Arrow cave... Sidekick. And orphaned. And millionaire - to your point, about, you know, the wealthy... Gadgets and stuff. So, like, it's a tricky exercise. You know, it can't just be, you know - honestly, it, you know, if - if Batwoman was just Arrow with a cape and cowl, it wouldn't have worked. Uh, I think the reason that show works is - is it really is its own animal. And by - I think one of the things Caroline and her team did very intelligently was, they leaned into the weirdness of Gotham. They - they recognized that - that Gotham is a character and, you know, Gotham kind of paints all of its inhabitants with a certain brush. Um, and by leaning into that and making that, you know, such a central driver of the show, I think - I think, helps, you know. I'm so incredibly excited to get back to work and I've been itching because acting is my main passion, my first love. I've been missing it for months. At the same time, sets are not going to be the same for a while. It's going to be a socially distant set. I think for some actors and for some crew members, they'll adapt to it a lot quicker than I will. I am the on set social butterfly. I say good morning to every crew member every day. I'm having conversations with everybody. I'm the actor where you're yelling, 'Yo, Camrus. You got to be on set right now'. I'm like, 'Oh sorry! I was hearing about Angela's baby [laughter]'. "When I'm on set, I'm the happiest I ever am because it's my dream to be on set. I'm just so happy to talk to other professionals. That's the thing that people don't really realise when you're on TV, you are surrounded by people that are top of their game in a lot of ways. Whoever is doing your makeup each day has probably done makeup for a million movies, a million TV shows for a million stars and you like hearing about their personal lives and their careers. It just makes the job even better, because when I get to hear how much you love your job, it makes me want to do my job even better so that we can keep working together. "It's going to suck that I can't get as personal for a while. I can't hug everybody like I used to. That's kind of sad, but at least we all get to be there together. I do wonder if she was supposed to be a Bat-family character but they changed course when they cast Javicia. ---- Anyway, the Batwoman Fandome panel was fun; they gave some teases about next season. Not that I was really expecting them to talk about Ruby Rose or Kate Kane, but it was noticeably odd that they didn't, considering that the show centered around her in Season 1. She added that she expects Kate’s absence will likely lead to a bigger relationship — and conflict — with Alice. “Alice is just going to be peeved,” Skarsten said. “She has this beautiful, intricate plan for the demise of her sister and that will have been foiled.” The show’s lead villain will also face Safiyah (Shivani Ghai), the mystery woman she’s been hiding from the whole time. Skarsten said the introduction of the character will be “intriguing.” “A lot is going to fall upon [Sophie],” Meagan Tandy said of her character. “It sounds like my current life right now, so it shouldn’t be too hard to play.” Now freed of being the season 1 love interest, the character will learn why Batwoman had to be so secretive and may even push Ryan to maintain the secrecy once it becomes clear a different woman is under the cowl.
