Dulé Hill has been cast in the reboot of The Wonder Years

Quote

Psych alum Dulé Hill is set as a lead opposite Elisha “EJ” Williams and Saycon Sengbloh in ABC’s The Wonder Years single-camera comedy reboot pilot. Additionally, newcomer Laura Kariuki (Black Lightning) is set as a series regular in the reboot from Dave exec producer Saladin Patterson, Fred Savage and Empire co-creator Lee Daniels.

Written by Patterson and directed by Savage, the reboot of the classic 1980s family comedy-drama is set in the same era as the original. It looks at how the Williamses, a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, AL, in the turbulent late 1960s made sure it was the Wonder Years for them too.

Hill will play Bill Williams, Dean’s (Elisha Williams) dad. He’s a music professor by day and a funk musician by night – described by Adult Dean as “The baddest guy I knew.” Almost always calm and composed, his favorite words are “be cool.” Bill wants his family and their black, middle class neighborhood to remain self-sufficient and he puts his money where his mouth is.

Saw an inconsistency (Not a complaint, just an observation): There was an episode when Shaun cut himself and Gus encouraged him to suck on it. Then Shaun was irritated, asking why Gus wanted him to drink his own blood all the time. Shaun actually did a pretty good impression of Gus. I was watching Scary Sherry and toward the end Shaun pricked himself on a knife and immediately started sucking on his finger.

I’m watching season one and Shawn was just so smart and brilliant in what he knew and how he solved crimes.

But right now I’m watching “Forget Me Not” and the scene with the zoo director has me 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

He really was. That's a great episode.

Yeah, the later seasons are practically unwatchable because the writers have somehow forgotten that Shawn is a freaking genius who most of the times just pretends to have no clue, not an actual idiot who just lucks out while solving cases.

I hate this. For a long time I thought they didn’t start dumbing down Shawn until Season 5ish. But the seeds were being planted as soon as the end of season one!

Like in “Cloudly with a Chance of Murder”, Shawn has no clue what pro bono means! And in season two, “65 Million Years Off” he looks downright stupid. And now with “Psy v. Psy” he doesn’t know there’s a Treasury Department?

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

But “American Duos” NEVER FAILS to make me 😂😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

Tim Curry as fake Simon Cowell was HILARIOUS!!!!

”LOOKATMEEEEEE!”

Honestly, those early instances seemed to me more Shawn playing dumb than actually not knowing what it means. Especially in "Cloudy" he seems to play up his stupidity so give Gus opportunities to explain the jargon to him.

I disagree. Then again, Shawn knows what pro bono means as he he agreed to investigate the kidnapping case in the pilot as pro bono after Vick refused his ludicrous price. And the show kept all the original writers so the retcons that happened in later years are just aggravating. And the hypocrisy of both Juliet and Lassie.

In season for now and I can’t stand Abby’s presumptuous. Shawn told her to give him time until he was comfortable to introduce her to Henry. What does she do? She just goes behind his back and calls Henry to meet.🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

But Shawn and Gus’ friendship remains one of the, If not THE reasons I love this show and makes up for the other stuff. You can see how much Shawn loves Gus, in the few episodes when Gus is in danger.

Watching “Devil is in the Details” and can’t wait until the scene where Shawn crows and tells Gus he was “wrong!wrong!wrong!!”😂😂😂😂😂

Oh! I meant to add I realized why they recast Liam James. He was actually 10, playing Shawn at 8 in the first season. He was 13 in his final episode. Turned 14 a few days after it aired. So not really ab early growth spurt, but normal.

I still think they should have stopped with the flashbacks after Liam aged out because Skykar was awful, and the chemistry with Corbin and Carlos wasn’t there like it was with Liam.

True...either that or just change the flashbacks to a teenage or young man Shawn. But honestly, the show had run its course at this point anyway. The moment they changed the actor for young Shawn is basically my mental cutting off point. I can deal with the few bad episodes they had beforehand, I can't deal with the nonsense which followed.

Oh, and season 2 is by far the best!

I had more problems with how Gus's character progressed than Shawn's. I know that Shawn was always the naturally more intuitive one, but I felt that Gus was set up to be more responsible and reasonable sidekick. By the end, Gus was just a ridiculous sidekick.

12 hours! I read the show drops 6:00am Eastern (which is what Peacock did with Girls5Eva.)

I rewatched both movies, and the 1st one was so much better than I remembered. It’s the Daughter Vick story I didn’t like then or now. The 2nd one’s funniest running gag was still Selene thinking Gus was cheating with the nurse because of all the mistaken identities.

I’m spoiler free, and really looking forward to this!

I really wish they hadn’t used Ted Nugent as Shawn’s disguise. I understand Lassie is conservative and it makes sense he’d look forward to a concert, but using Nugent again was promoting (read: endorsing) Nugent’s political and anti-vax stances. Some people you can’t split from their real world beliefs, and this is one.

After a crappy day yesterday, this was just what I needed.  Everyone was in good form and I thought Lassiter's scenes with his daughter and with Henry were great.  I thought maybe Selene was in some kind of witness protection but the convoluted story they came up with worked for me.  I really liked the actor playing Dexter (the not-ex-husband) - he was funny and charismatic, so I'm glad he got away, even if he did kill someone and threaten our heroes.

I can't remember them all but "Rodriguez" being always at the end and the "Peacock" joke were both great.   It was nice to see more of Karen and Ray Wise's priest is always, always welcome - I loved that he kept doing exorcisms.

Did we all notice there was only one "Come on, son!!" which Gus shouted during the birthing scene 😆

They left us wide open for more movies - Lassiter's future; Dexter stalking Gus and family; does Juliet really not want to start a family; Karen's issues with her family and WE DON'T KNOW THE NAME OF THE BABY!!

Nice interview here with Tim Omundson.

AGREE! I think they also SORASed Lilly! She was born in 2014 and so should be 7, but I think I heard her age as being 11? Anyhoo....

The BEST scene, which had me laughing my ass off so hard my tummy ached, was the fight between Shawn and Gus in the bathroom!!! I just LOVE those two together. Laughed almost as hard as the fight they had in Despereaux third appearance ("Indiana Shawn and the Temple of the Kinda Crappy, Rusty Old Dagger" where he'd faked his death) and Shawn and Gus are fighting outside that museum.

I can appreciate that Juliet doesn't want children, but did seeing Selene giving birth change her mind? I wouldn't put it past even these writers, because it's such a trope.

Karen not being able to spend time with her daughter and husband broke my heart.

And DAMMIT, I wanted to see a final scene with my guys, and not Decker. Because both James and Dulé have said as long as the fans want it, they'll continue doing the movies.

And considering the rush wedding, no wonder Phylicia Rashad wasn't in this.

I also snerked at all the Urkel jokes, because Jaleel White has played Gus's college friend.

I can't wait for the next one!

I thought he was dressed as Rob Zombie?  Because they had a discussion about how Shawn just realized he looks like him. (I googled some pics of RZ when he looks fairly normal and they do look alike!)

Loved the bathroom fight and Shawn filing Gus’s head. Lol! Everything with the ventriloquist dummy was gold.

I love Tim O so much.

I still want Juliet and Shawn to have a kid. He had the maturity to get married, I think he could have the maturity to raise a kid. Especially with Uncle Gus around.

The priest constantly going into exorcism mode was hilarious, though it made me wonder if he's showing signs of dementia, which made me sad.

It is wrong to give us no Juliet/Lassie moments. I'm glad Timothy Omundson is doing better. That outfit looked sharp. I hope he gets to become a consultant like Henry did. It would make the most sense for his character. I forgot Lassie had bought Henry's house, so I was very confused when his daughter came running out of the house.

It is weird how much Shawn/James looked like Rob Zombie. Did that occur to someone when he wore the Hagrid outfit in the first movie?

I liked Juliet saying that Selene was family since she was marrying Gus. I'm a sucker for the guys considering each other family.

This is my least favorite of the movies, but that doesn't mean I want them to stop. Subpar Psych beats so much else on TV. Come on, son!

Here is a picture of him looking sort of normal. He’s a singer and also writes horror movies I think. He usually has crazy scary makeup on when he performs.

James said this in an interview with Collider:

I’ve gotta give my old pal, Monika Mikkelsen, who’s a casting director, credit because I never would have known that I resembled Rob Zombie, if she hadn’t texted me one day with our photos side by side and she said, “Did you have any idea?” Of course, I didn’t have any idea. Nobody knows what Rob Zombie actually looks like. I think of him with the makeup and the white face. Who knows what he actually looks like, under there? And then, there was this picture of him just as a normal dude. Talk about getting slapped with a fun reality in middle age that you just never saw coming. I was like, “Holy cow! I look like Rob Zombie. That’s weird. How can we immediately turn that into a joke?”

Late in responding, but yes, both Shawn and Gus talked about how Shawn's disguise was that of Rob Zombie; the only reference to Ted Nugent was something about skull & bones underneath his picture (?) by Lily to Lassie.

I caught a video on YouTube of James and Dulé for a Q&A before Peacock reaired "Last Night Gus" and both were simultaneously providing commentary. I missed the live watch and talk, but both said they will continue to do these movies and when they're 60, do another "Viagra Falls" playing the roles of William DeVane and Carl Weathers!😅😅

Just finished watching Psych 3 (I'd forgotten it was coming out and only happened to be reminded b/c of a Facebook ad. Algorithms did something good for once!)

I enjoyed the finale and the last two movies, but this was the best Psych has been for a long time. They really nailed the characters, the humor, and best of all remembered it works the best when the show is an ensemble, like the first few seasons of the show. Everyone had a chance to shine and contribute (although I feel that Chief Vick's storyline was missing an ending). Timothy Omundson is doing amazing in his recovery; I love that guy. Shawn and Gus (JRR and DH) were on fire.

Loved it.

Well there better be a fourth movie but because baby boy Guster needs a name but given the lack of chatter about it even among Psych fans, I suspect the interest is wearing out... but who knows?  Streaming platforms and their mysterious numbers.

I could have done without Lassie being team Ted Nugent even though it felt like it was probably in character.

I had to look up what Rob Zombie looked like without makeup but HA!

I thought the birth scene was too over the top with all the screaming but other than that I enjoyed the movie.  Especially the very real struggle with Lassie.  I felt Vick's story was very, very, very much unfinished.  But they didn't have to introduce problems in her marriage to tell this story so I hope it is dropping hints for bigger story for Vic in the possible next movie.

The USA "I haven't watched it since 2014... except those last seasons of Suits..."  I didn't watch the last couple of seasons of Suits but otherwise I felt seen.

Same here. It was the only reason I even had cable for about a decade.

I happened to see it on a YouTube ad only because the ad made me wait 5 seconds. I wasn't paying attention and I heard Gus' voice.

This movie was kind of silly, but I still enjoyed it. The guys were a little too over the top. There were really good beats, like the reaction shot to 'Glen'. I also liked Jules' reaction to 'how fast can you drive' and Vick's 'as fast as I damn well want.' The main thing is that the actors are clearly having a blast, and you don't want to do a movie just for whatever and have them go through the motions. It's also nice that there's clearly a fondness for Tim, and he's always going to have a part in the show.

I would have liked the guys get into the 'crime' a little sooner because it was interesting. I read an article about It's Always Sunny where they said the show is like a band getting back together and jamming, and cutting that into a record. I'm fine with that here. The streaming platform actually gives you that kind of latitude.

I've always enjoyed Vick, and I'm glad she had more to do this time, and even a little bit of backstory with being absent from her family. I mean, she's the reason Shawn is where he is in his life. She could have booted him at anytime and put up with a lot.

I actually like that Jules and Shawn don't want to have kids. It doesn't mean they don't like kids, and I'm sure they're going to be thrilled to babysit the Wee Baby Gus. I thought it was telling that Vick is regretful of being absent. Jules is career driven and no doubt would want to move up in the department, so maybe that's a lesson there.

What actually is Shawn's job?

Honestly, I would love love love if they did another movie that had a cameo by Monk.

The closest they came to that was in the series finale. But yes, I think it would a hoot for Shawn and Gus to meet Monk, if only to see Monk's reaction to them both; especially Shawn.

I felt like they were indicating in this movie towards the end that shawn & jules were possibly reconsidering having a kid

also yes we need Psych meets Monk

By now, the whole 'psychic' angle is a farce anyway, and I don't think Shawn would pull that with Monk anyway.

I'd love to see the 'villain' abduct Gus, and Shawn out of his mind trying to find him and have to beg Monk for help.

It writes itself!

Honestly, I'd rather see Lassie and Henry rescue them in that scenario (or Chief Vick and Juliet).  I'm afraid that a Monk cameo would take time away from the other main characters, they really didn't resolve the Lassie or Vick storylines in this movie.
