S10.E10: Stuck in a Moment

Horrible episode.

Putting Dylan and Haley together and having them have a baby is a huge mistake. They are a sucky couple that should’ve ended in high school.

Also Dylan is a total idiot there’s no way he could ever be a nurse.

Yeah. Again. Claire isn’t the only I didn’t like but she was on it, her needing to be right all the time and that like really bugged. Especially when it’s to her child.

Cam and Mitch forgetting their kids multiple times is not funny.

The whole haley and Dylan story. I hope the show isn’t considering a spin off. I actually would like for Sarah hyland to be off the show. I would like to see if she can do more than Haley.

The fact that it kind of seems like a lot of the actors are phoning their performances in. Also like another person said, the writers clearly are too.

Luke is over 20 years old he should be able to pronounce the world wreath correctly and certainly not try and pretend that what he said was also acceptable.

I was put off my Claire's initially moodiness but I'm totally on her side with the tree thing. My dad does the same thing. He owns a restaurant and rather than shopping for holiday decorations for the place, he'll often take the decorations my mom has up around the house to decorate the restaurant with. He even took one of the trees one year (my mom puts up two), so I've witnessed firsthand how annoying that is and don't fault Claire for being pissed.

It was nice to see Mitch and Cam getting along and singing holiday jingles together... too bad they can't get along and remember to take care of the kids at the same time.

Alex has definitely lied to her parents before but she has always been pretty awkward and terrible at it so it wasn't too much of a stretch to think she couldn't handle keeping such a huge thing from them.

Really thought Jay's "medication" was going to turn out to be viagra.... wasn't expecting the elbow cream thing and it really wasn't funny.

Eh I thought she was rude. But hey we can agree to disagree and I can’t really like her always need to right. Sorry, no. And I am on her side with the tree and presents but sometimes she is rude just to be rude and the writers

think this a funny trait.

I didn’t see him trying to be right. I think he was just trying to be like I say it however I want but Claire was just rude about it and then Luke was like do you always need to be right? Again.. agreeing to disagree. Sometimes I feel Claire is just rude as nean. Again. She wasn’t my only issue this episode.

There were a lot of things wrong

and terrible in this episode for me . The biggest one, not One thing was funny for me.

Because there is no way in hell I think someone, Luke’s age who while dim is not that stupid to think that was the correct pronunciation of the word wreath and instead of just acknowledging that he pushed it. Most people I know, myself included, would appreciate it if someone corrected the pronunciation of a word if it was wrong and not find it remotely rude.

Yes but Claire was to me in her tone rude and abrasive about it. But that’s just me. Again. Moving on.

My main issue is that this is what the characters are now. One note characters. Claire isn’t nice and seems mad about something (and again I’m on her side regarding th tree and present fiasco), Phil is silly and screws things up, Mitch and Cam are parents but not great ones(which is probably why Lily and sometimes Cal now disappearfor episodes at a time only to reappear), Jay and Gloria do wacky stuff and mostly just yell at each other now, sometimes we get an appearance from Luke, manny, and Alex. And then we have the big story arc of this season haley is prefect with Dylan’s baby and nothing about this storyline has made me laugh once. You bring up Luke acting young about a pronounce of a word, almost everything haley and Dylan were thinking of doing to announce the pregnancy read as a viewer as to me as two high school students having a baby, not young adults. I get being freaked out but all of their ideas  after just announcing it didn’t work because Claire wasn’t ina good mood were terrible. Even having Dylan come down the chimney to hand out presents to the kids wouldn’t show me he could be a parent. I don’t know. I cringe through all of Haley’s scenes now.

I...really didn't think Claire was being rude in correcting Luke, nor did I think she was trying to be right.  There is no trying to be right in this instance because there aren't multiple options to debate because the word "wreath" is pronounced the one way it is pronounced, and Luke should know this so he doesn't come across like a fucking moron.

True, but the theme of this ep was hyperbole, so that was just one example. I love this show when there are family mix ups that are grounded in reality. I despise this show when everyone acts in ways that no normal person would act in. Which, BTW, is one reason why I tend to not like the Mitch and Cam story lines. Farce is fun, but not on a show like this, IMO. YMMV.

I did like that Alex and Luke kept Haley's secret. Even as Alex was flipping out all she did was beg Haley to tell their parents herself. She never once threatened to rat Haley out.

I also appreciate that as shocked as Phil and Claire are, they managed to pull it together and give Haley a happy reaction. It's a good bet they didn't get that reaction 25 years ago when Claire was pregnant.

This.  They managed to tie everything together but so much of it was based on things that were not believable.

I love your name. There's a channel that I watch on YouTube sometimes and they have a daughter named Everleigh and spell it the same way.

Also, people keep mentioning a setup for a Haley and Dylan spinoff. I don't want that to happen for several reasons but one of the main reasons is I worry about Sarah. Pictures I've seen of her lately, she doesn't look real healthy.

Claire was pretty crappy this week, especially when she screwed Phil's sale up. I did laugh at the "She cant be a Grinch all of the time!" followed by them seeing Claire dragging the presents and the tree down the street.

Poor Alex and her white hair.

I laughed out loud about the the Grinch line because on my tv screen I could have sworn it looked like there was a slight green tint for a second  to Claire's face as she was dragging the tree and gifts down the street. May have just been an anomaly on my tv set?

Dylan and Hayley seemed the most mature out of the lot this episode, may be it was done on purpose. We have deadly spiders apparently in the house and Gloria/Jay are sending kids in. Claire's being horrible to Luke, Cam and Mitch are forgetting kids all over the place.

If they all can have kids, Dylan and Hayley will just be fine.

It was there, she passed in front of a green spotlight on the lawn right as they said it. I am surprised there wasn't a sleigh and a scruffy dog in the background to compete the scene.

I had no laughs this episode.

How often does anybody say the word wreath, to justify taking the time to learn to pronounce it correctly.

The joke with Gloria and the retainer, that was supposed to make her look ...what?...

It would have been funnier if they handed Lily the cell phone and it rings and she gets so scared she threw it in the air and it lands in the fountain. I have been holding a phone when it rings and it is terrifying if you are not used to it.

This. Almost everything you said.

Yeah I didn’t get the joke about the retainer, but maybe because at that point I was already looking at the clock waiting for the episode to finally end. None of the jokes worked, so that fell flat too.

Again, I have to say it, but nothing about this season is working for me. The fact that they hyped up The big character death even before the season begun and it turned out to be dede. And so far it hasn’t left a ripple effect as they said it would. And I mean I’m kind of fine with that, dede stopped being funny to me after season 2, but also interesting, apparently she isn’t that big of a character she’s only been in like 7 or something total episodes. And yet the thing is even though I’m fine with them not mentioning Dede, the characters death should have a more lasting effect than it does.

Even Phil’s moms death, who we met did like 1 second in one Christmas episode and it was a brief moment I think, had more of a lasting impact. They continued to reference back with it whenever we saw his dad before he got remarried. Dedes death is a sort of a non factor.

And yeah.. as someone who doesn’t get the Dylan and Haley relationship, especially because they ended them quite nicely with Haley seeing him with his new wife and her kids, and now they’ve lobbed them into a pregnancy story and decided to make them Claire and Phil 2.0 which isn’t working for me. And that’s our big arc for the season. So far nothing else big has happened. And I don’t know. It makes me sad that this show is now background noise.

I wonder if they are setting up a spin-off series that will focus on Hayley and Dylan.  This thought hit me because they built the entire episode around the "big announcement."  Also, the looks on Phil and Claire after the news.  It just seems like in the previous episode Mitch agreed with Cam that they would move back to the farm when Cam's father was ready to retire along with how much they have aged up Cal.  Anyway, just a thought-

Now that you mention the farm, A Cam & Mitch show might be an okay spinoff. Kind of like a gay, Green Acres redux. I don't think I'd want to watch any of the others. A Haley & Dylan show would have to be called Clueless or Dumb & Dumber. Those names were already used.

The problem is, having Cam and Mitch in a Green Acres type of show would probably work very well. You would basically take the things that people don't like about characters the last few seasons and putting it there. They would have to recast Lilly, because the actress wouldn't work in that larger of a spot light and having Cal wouldn't be that funny. Trying to do Haley and Dylan in a spin off. I don't know compared to Sarah's real life health problems and the actor who plays Dylan would possibly focusing on his voice acting work he has coming up in the next couple of years.

I don't get it. Why would a native English speaker pronounce a 'th' sound as and 'f' sound?   And at least in my world, hearing somebody say wreath is much more common than ever hearing the word reef

Claire goes overboard decorating for holidays, so I'm sure she has been hanging wreaths for years, which makes it even more implausible that Luke would not know the correct pronunciation.  More than that, I particularly don't understand why Claire correcting her son's pronunciation of a simple word is considered rude by some people.  I thought it made Luke sound so stupid, and he should have been grateful his mom pointed it out to him.

I did get one laugh from the episode - when Lily immediately dropped her phone in the water.  I've been hate-watching this show for a long time and rarely ever laugh during an episode - so I guess that was a positive in an otherwise bad episode.

Oh, and I also liked the reaction of Phil and Claire to Haley's news.  It was well-acted by Ty and Julie.  So it wasn't all bad, I suppose, but I'm ready for this show to be over.  I've thought about not watching it anymore, but since I've watched since the pilot, I want to see how it ends.  I just wish it was more funny than annoying.

Yes to every word of this.

I think since people have such an unyielding, passionate hatred of Claire, they see her as the bad guy in every scenario, which means they have to find a reason to excuse Luke's totally idiotic mispronunciation so that they can criticize her as being rude or bitchy or whatever.  Really, though, there is absolutely no justifiable reason why Luke, a native English speaker, would ever pronounce "wreath" like "reef" and then try to justify himself as correct or why Claire was so awful for correcting him.  Frankly, Claire could've been much harsher to him than she actually was.  It is not a bad thing to speak correctly.

A show centered around Mitch and Cam, but mostly Cam?

I have never heard the word Wreath pronounced wrong

Also I commented last week about understanding Haley being upset about the pregnancy.  This week I took the opposite view with Phil/Claire.

This week, I know Claire has never been a fan of Dylan, but otherwise, I don't see where they have a huge amount to worry about.  Dylan is a nurse.  And he was previously married with stepkids.  Not an infant presumably, but still, Haley is not a teenager with no job and who is being left to raise the kid herself.  Yes its unexpected and scary, but there is no reason to think she and Dylan won't be together and raise the kid together.  And they both have jobs.  For once someone in this family might actually have to budget and give some thought to finances, but they aren't destitute or poor by any means.  They'd be perfectly middle class. They'd be middle class and they have a ton of family around to babysit and help out for them if needed.

Ditto.

However if you google around, it apparently has been a semi-major issue for awhile.  Perhaps it's a regional thing from somewhere.  Honestly, I thought maybe it was a drug thing with the kids these days (aka "reefer"), especially since that wreath appeared so tiny/awkward/ugly.  And wreaths made of marijuana are apparently a thing these days, although mistletoe replacement is a more common thing (so common that a senior citizen on Days of our Lives just bought a "sprig of mistletoe" which her FBI grandson correctly ID'd as pot).

Maybe for Luke's story that's it. But my friend who says "reef" has mispronounced it for his whole life (he's 57) and he's never been into drugs. I don't know why, but it's just something he's always done. I assume others do too (hence "I've heard it both ways").

Reminds me of Murry on The Goldbergs constantly saying robot as "rebit". Which, Adam Goldberg's real father did on a regular basis, even when they told him he is saying wrong. Sometimes, it's how a person hears it and how they say it. Of course, I still say catcher with an accent and I have lived in the Midwest for most of my life.

My feeling is that I felt Claire was unnecessary rude about it and even Luke was like “do you have to be right all the time?” And she made a snarky comment about how when she’s right, yes. And normally Claire doesn’t bother me much so this isn’t a case of omg everything she does is annoying (although on this forum I feel like some people have that opinion on Cam, I get he’s a lot but it seems like a lot of you just hate him, it’s not like Mitchell is great all the time) but it just was rude to me and that’s how I feel.

But there is no being right in this instance.  The word is pronounced how it's pronounced.  The end.  I just rewatched the scene, and Claire had just discovered that her dipshit husband had taken all their Christmas shit without telling her when her dipshit son mispronounced "wreath," so she over-enunciated the "th" to correct him.  Luke may (or may not) have "heard it both ways," but Claire was 100% justified in telling him that didn't make it right; a mispronunciation of a simple word is still a mispronunciation of a simple word no matter how many people are mispronouncing it, and it makes you look stupid if you do it as well just because other people have done it.

Honestly, I don't think that is a bad idea. They would need to get way more independent in the final episodes though because as of now, Hayley seems to depend on her parents too much. If those actors don't want to come back they would need to figure out a new support group other than her parents. Maybe it is best to just let it end.

Word! Also the second she found out that Phil had replaced it all she hugged him and sung his praises. Even her saying she didn’t want to ask Mitchell to host was because the entire family had been giving her shit for a year or two and would be giving her shit for longer know that she has failed again sonbeing “rude” is clearly standard in this family but it’s usially just Claire and Cam that get called out.

I feel like I call them all out on being rude and when they’re unnecessary rude but whatever. I don’t want to be quoted anymore about this one silly scene because honestly I’m over talking about this one second scene where again to my feelings and my opinion I thought Claire was being kind of harsh.

And also as I said many times over I am on her side regarding Phil taking the trees and gifts. I never said that I wasn’t or that was okay.

And I felt like almost everyone was terrible in this episode.  Except for maybe Alex, although I can’t buy like others her having such a reaction to Lying to her parents like it’s the first time.

Even haley and Dylan to me are just being written badly at this point. I get being freaked out and all that but I am with Phil and Claire. Yes Dylan has a job as a nurse and Haley has a job and they have family to help but like someone else said, Haley still very much leans on her parents. A little too much. I mean I’m assuming we’re probably going to get an episode where they sit them down and ask them what their plan is regarding all this and then we’re probably going to get another Haley freaks out about this. Which I get but it’s going to get old if this is her standard response.

And I can’t with Mitch and Cam leaving their kids places. That’s not.. funny.

Mans Jay and Gloria were kind of just stupid. Not really funny.

So yeah.. to me everyone was annoying in this episode. But I’m feeling like that’s standard for this show as of late. All their characteristics are now just heightened and that’s all they are.

This might bother some people, but in this situation I just make fun of the person who doesn't know the right word or phrase. Then they learn the right way. It may seem mean but it's just constructive criticism.

I also think everyone in this episode acted badly in some way.  Lots of being inconsiderate, lots of free floating stupidity, and lots of breaks from reality.  Really none of it was funny, interesting or entertaining.

I will say that I wasn't bothered that the mother of a 20 year old boy, who lives at home, corrected his pronunciation of a common word.  If he wasn't a complete blockhead, it would have done him a favor. Unless he will spend his lifetime around people who think everything he does is cute, it would be helpful will he could speak coherently.

If you understand what the person is saying and you correct them like that? Yeah, that's rude. Claire was frustrated about other things, which makes it understandable but not excusable. I have a friend who comes to me with "how do you pronounce this" a lot because she'll hear someone else say it and realize she's been saying it differently, and I'll go over my pronunciation of it with her, but on a day to day? If I know what the person means? Who cares that much? If you really need to correct them, you can just repeat the word and move on with what you want to say.

As for how he might have developed the pronunciation, he probably found the "wreef" pronunciation easier as his speech was developing and then it was close enough that it became a habit that didn't get corrected until now.

So much debate over this when it wasn't even what I came here to talk about! I wanted to complain about some of the lines that felt really forced this episode-- namely, the elf saying, "Put a little something in my booty" when he meant money in his shoe and Mitch saying, "I can't believe a little Dylan's going pop out of you. What would that even look like?" <cut to Dylan coming out of the chimney>. They were both done for jokes, but they were not at all natural, and I spent more time thinking, "Who would say that?" than caring about the joke.

I guess some people prefer to have it pointed out when they make a mistake, so they can correct it and avoid doing it again, and other people think it's rude to bring it up and don't really feel like it's important for them to change what they are doing. I think my view is that it really depends on the relationship between the people, and how serious the error is. Sometimes it's right to mind your own business and stay out of it. Other times, it's really a service to inform someone, and possibly negligent not to.

I think that a parent telling their child, in private, about a word they mispronounced, is well within any bounds of politeness, and in fact if she didn't correct him, she'd be negligent in her job of preparing him for life outside the nest. Maybe she was impatient and irritable, and could have told him more gently, but I think she had to tell him. It was a stupid plot point, though. Surely they've had a wreath in previous years so this would have already been addressed.

I started off really annoyed by Claire sabotaging a major sale-- the commission she just threw away is astounding! And also, the damage to Phil's reputation as a realtor, if his showings are chaotic and crime-filled (or even just disrupted by raging family members) is also significant. On the other hand, I can also understand the point of view that Phil preferring to drag the entire family Xmas tree + presents to a house for a showing, instead of staging it with things he has specifically for that purpose, is a little ridiculous, especially since it's apparently a regular occurrence. So, on further reflection, I call that one a sitcom plot driven by everyone being a little nuts.

My mother left me somewhere when I was very young. It terrified me, even though I was ultimately safe and she did come back for me eventually. I think the Mitch-Cam plot was supposed to be cathartic for parents who are looking to assuage their guilt. I did like the "you can have my phone if you can hang on to it" part of their story, though.

It wasn't even a plot point as much as a throwaway line to show Claire being in an irritable mood. We've definitely put more thought into it at this point than the writers did.

I agree with your entire point!   And as for the bolded, considering the fact that Luke is not the brightest bulb... he can use all the help he can get.
