SSM= Sainted Single Mother. I picked up the term in the Judge Judy forum

used to describe the women who, for example, take money from a friend, relative, whatever, and renege on a promise to pay it back. Most times the excuse is “but I’m a single mother.”

What a stereotypical term.  People are either responsible and honest or they aren’t.  Regardless of race, ethnicity,  gender, age, marital status or parental status.  Substitute a racial description  for the word single mother and you’ll see what I mean.

disclosure - I was a true single mother, later married and had another child. I never borrowed money without paying it back.

I can't see the family being supportive of Becky giving the baby up for adoption because they were so against her selling her eggs.  They considered that giving away a Conner baby, so how would this be different?

I agree, and in this vein, I was REALLY hoping that Becky's baby daddy would be someone from the original show. My list of options included Chip from the bowling alley, Jimmy Meltreeger, the Tongue Bandit, Darlene's crush Barry, and of course Dean Dean the Son-in-Law Machine. I even had Ziggy as an outlier. Any one of these would have made me so much happier than a random bus boy who so far just seems like an excuse for them to do a heavy-handed immigration storyline.

Agreed on everything. You know there will be an episode about Dan and them finding out the bus boy is illegal. I missed the one last night so maybe that already happened lol.

Conner babies can only be written off!

Jackie pretending to understand Spanish....

Jackie clearly understood Spanish, as seen ib the conversation about his history that they had.

Ditto.  She just comes on way too strong!

As opposed to every other character on the show.

[T]he most popular character on this show used to be a shrill loudmouth who bossed everyone around, so I don't get why that would be an issue.  I honestly believe she's being seen as "too much" because she's black.

The phrase "work twice as hard to get half as much" struck me.  Systemic blinders run so deep that people often can't see it, and try to justify it when it's pointed out.  I am most definitely NOT calling anyone a racist, just noting that words and actions speak for themselves.

The casino job had benefits, which I assume means insurance.
At a guess Darlene is smart enough to have signed up for Obamacare, and perhaps persuaded her father and sister to do the same.
Is DJ still in the Forces? What health coverage would he have?

Will Becky stay home and survive on Emilio's dish washing income?  Will Becky support the 3 of them on her tips so that Emilio can stay home?  Does Emilio have a non-working mother in this country, or will the baby be sent back to his home country to be raised?
Is DJ still in the Forces? He’s got one kid to take care of, why not a baby too?
Will the baby be born with fetal alcohol syndrome?
There’s a very good chance. Although some FAS children are only slightly delayed and look just fine.
They all tend to be trusting and suggestible.

And of course Down Syndrome.

She may end up letting Sarah Chalke adopt it.
The Chalke character was looking for a surrogate to carry her husband’s child. Or perhaps the child of both of them.
Surrogates are used when someone cannot carry a baby for some reason. There is a Canadian woman who bore a child at over 70. Her husband’s sperm, her womb, ourchased egg.
Chalke could just adopt any child if she wanted to go that route. And remember, this baby will be half-Mexican. Possibly not the designer baby she wants.

Well, we don't know how much Becky has been drinking lately. And...you know for generations women drank while pregnant and *most* of the babies came out OK!

Also, lots of women in their early 40s have perfectly healthy babies who *don't* have Down Syndrome.

And after all, Becky *is* on a sitcom...

Lol yes, the other characters are grating on me too.

I stated in a previous post how Roseanne being shrill is different from Geena being shrill. From season 5 on Roseanne did become overly shrill and the show really suffered. It was a lot more mean spirited after that point. This is how Geena plays it.

The pre season 5 Roseanne whom America fell in love with was shrill yes, but she did it in a really special way. She was more of a "wise cracker" and not vindictive. You could see a glint in her eye or a smirk on her face when she said all of her lines. I always love when she'd crack up midway through a line.

The "loudmouth" things she'd say were also very ironic or satirical of a patriarchal society. There was a lot of subtext and insights into human nature too. She was only a "witch" starting in season 5.

From what I've seen of Geena she just comes in and nags nags nags. The season 10 Skype Geena seemed a lot more laid back from what we saw of her.

Xosha Kai Roquemore seems like a  better actress than Maya Lynne Robinson, but that could be the writing (I loved her on The Mindy Project)  -- I'm willing to give Maya a chance and hope that the writing for her improves.  I'm not sure why Xhosa was replaced -- she's not that busy for such a small part.  I can't help but wonder if her departure was in some way linked to Barr's.

I really know nothing about the two actresses but I would speculate they wanted to expand the role and make the character a bit "tougher" and the producers felt she wasn't a good choice for that new role.

I really liked Xosha on The Mindy Project.  Her character there was tart without being over the line, and fit with the other characters.  She's also been on Santa Clarita Diet on NetFlix.

Maya hasn't been in much, other than some self-created YouTube ventures, so I really have no idea of her range.  I'll watch them when I get a chance.

Xosha may not have wanted to commit to more than an episode or two in a minor character, and save her time for top-line roles.

I just love this show.  It's fine to me and I think the writing is super good.  Yeah, it's not realistic that Darlene can support Becky and her baby, but, it's a sitcom.....I'll buy it.  They all are so funny and of course, Becky is still my favorite.  Something about her just cracks me up.
