Man, I REALLY hope he can act, because Smit-McPhee is lookswise one of the best casting jobs the X-franchise has ever done.

Er, those promo images are so over-Photoshopped I still don't have any idea what the character is going to look like on film.

Jubliee's outfit fits in the eighties, not so much modern day. I'm glad they are bringing her in, she was one of my favs from the cartoon.

Marvel does seem to get the casting right most of the time.

I don't know why, but I find all the contortions Sophie has to make to be in the same frame as this girl, slightly hilarious. I would bet her knees are bent as well.

Well, Sophie Turner is extremely tall (I think she's 5'9 or something). Points for the reasonably authentic period dress (I like First Class, but I hate that it doesn't look remotely like 1962). I admit Jean Grey has never been my favorite character, but Turner's Grey can't be as drippy and uninteresting as the cartoon version or Famke Jannsen's (just so we're clear, I blame that on the writers, not Jannsen herself). I still hope they give her cool, badass stuff to do, regardless.

The cartoon version of Jean was a travesty. I don't... I can't... FLAMES ON THE SIDE OF MY FACE!! Using her powers made her faint dead away while in the comic books she's fucking flying around, landing planes, blocking bullets and kicking the shit out Sabretooth. Jean is the absolute definition of "I can kill you with fire from my mind!" and the cartoon... I just...

::breaks things::

The movie stuff. *sigh* I don't mind Jean being a doctor. Great! Go for it! I do mind everyone speaking in a monotone. And they also still made her pretty weak in the first movie... it was only in the second they started exploring the possibility of her powers being more.

And I can't talk about the third. Every time I see that on one of the movie channels it feels like a personal insult.

So I'm really hoping they do something with Jean here. Sophie can do it. That picture is adorable. And I want to believe! (wrong franchise but it's still true)

My only confusion is that both Jean and Jubilee look the same age and ummm, isn't Jean supposed to be 10 yeas older or something?

Because the original X-Man director decided upon an all star mutant team with characters from decades apart instead of taking an intake Marvel Comics Universe team you can throw out any isn't someone supposed to be so old argument. At best you can hope that once a character is introduced she remains consistent to the internal logic of the X-Men movies.

I'm actually okay with Jean and Jubes being the same age... or close to it... it makes me think of X-Men: Evolution which I loved and I don't care who knows it! But, at this point, they've pretty much done away with the concept of the original 5, the second genesis team, the post-Phoenix team, etc etc etc... Jubilee didn't age for years in the comics and actually regressed at one point. And now she's a vampire. With a baby.

You know what? They can fuck around with ages all they want. It will never be weirder than the books.

Also, I totally had those shorts Jubes is wearing in 1985.

Hey, don't be ashamed, I loved X-Men: Evolution, too! It had Nightcrawler and Shadowcat, and every episode wasn't about Wolverine!

Still had to deal with the Scott and Jean 4evah OTP though. Ugh, and poor Rogue got dragged into it. :<

I loved X-men Evolution too! I loved Rogue. I didn't mind that she had a crush on Scott. I thought it was kind of cute. But yeah, the Scott x Jean stuff was a little too much at times. Didn't stop Rogue from being awesome though. I liked her eps the best. I'm sad that Gambit only got to be in only a handful of eps.

Jubilee's and young Jean's outfits are fine and dandy.

As much as I enjoy Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine (he's utterly fantastic), I have to admit I'm kind of glad he's stepping away. As I've said before, I find the X-franchise to be way too Wolverine-centric at the moment. Hopefully Jackman retiring will lead them to develop some other characters not named Wolverine, Professor X, or Magneto.

Unlikely. I think this coming movie is Singer's last. They'll probably reboot the series in a year or two, find someone new to be Wolverine. Maybe they'll find someone shorter. As much as I like Jackman, he's rather tall for the job.

I wonder if they'll use Sunspot since he was already in DOFP. I also wonder if this will be set in the past or present.

I doubt that they'll be rebooting again anytime soon. I know Bryan Singer is likely done directing after Apocalypse but I imagine they will continue with this new crop for awhile. I also don't see them fast forwarding a decade each movie now with the younger casts.

I, too, wonder which crop of New Mutants they're likely to use. It'd be pretty awesome to see Dani, Sam, Roberto, Xian, Illyana, Doug and Magma (I never know what to call her to be honest... her Nova Roma name or her Allison Crestmere name or what...) but I'm kind of old school that way. I can see them going for the more recent group given that the others seem to be scattered willy nilly throughout the Marvel Universe.

Based on his performance on True Blood I think Michael Raymond-James might be able to do it. But he's not a big name, so likely the studio would never consider hiring him in a prominent role.

With Nightcrawler being in the next movie, I wonder if Days of Future's Past changed things enough where Mystique raised Nightcrawler instead of giving him up. That would be a different take on their story. Nightcrawler would've grown up with his mother's hatred for mutant hating humans and taught to not be afraid of what he looks like.

I agree and wish First Class had shown Charles and Erik working together more before breaking them up because there wasn't enough time for me to see the life long bond they are supposed to have. I also wish we would've gotten more of a reaction from Logan when he discovered that the Professor and Magneto were fighting over Mystique. His reaction should've been WTF, her? He also didn't react to her being Professor X's sister. You'd think that would've been something that would've surprised him even if the future Charles and Erik told him that. They tried to build this relationship between Charles, Raven and Erik, changing it from the comics but didn't really elaborate on it.

In fairness, the one issue that showed how Xavier and Magneto met (Uncanny X-Men #161), the two of them weren't together for a long amount of time before going their separate ways.  Though it's been quite a while since I read it.

Yeah, but the movies implied they were friends for a long time before splitting up and that Erik helped build Cerebro. With as little time as they spent in the movies together, I'm not sure I buy that epic frenemy-ship they have, especially since I can't see a lot of reasons for Charles to put up with Erik, who basically just wreaks havoc any time he isn't in prison.

The Raven triangle also doesn't work, because the Magneto/Raven relationship is really just gross. JLaw usually reads as older, but in this role she absolutely reads as young and Erik comes across like a cult leader preying on that. It's neither sexy nor romantic, just uncomfortable to me. I heard somewhere they'll focus MORE on this pairing in the next one - please, somebody tell me that isn't true??

Yeah. The romantic angle of it really doesn't work for me, either. It doesn't help that I found Mystique/Magneto played by Rebecca Romijn and Ian McKellan to be Bitch and Sassy Gay BFFs. "We LOVE what you've done with your hair." Not an ounce of sexual chemistry at all... although the way Erik was in Days of Future Past means that his turning on Raven the second "The Cure" worked on her was pretty much a given.

I understand that the movie canon is very different from comic canon... but Mystique in the comics had the long running relationship with Rogue, the long standing animosity with Wolverine, the blood line with Nightcrawler, the relationship with Destiny... I know she must have had run ins with Magneto but they were not the major storylines for her. Of course, she was resentful of Xavier for 'stealing' Rogue away from her which wasn't the case... Rogue went to the X-Men because she was losing her mind due to her powers and specifically Carol Danvers persona within her. Then they did this really weird bit in the comics recently where Mystique had a kid with Charles AND with Wolverine who kept coming back from the future to try to kill the X-men so they'd 'win' or something. It was really weird and they also wiped it out and no one seems to talk about it at all anymore. (It was a Bendis brain-child, it seems... and he got bored with it so it is no more.)

At this point, they really need to focus on other characters. Of which there are PLENTY. I'm all for Jean being something other than The Love Interest. I'm all for Scott being Scott rather than Dude Who's Not as Cool as Wolverine. Hell, I'm ready for any number of characters to step up rather than be relegated to Not As Cool As Wolverine. Let him go, X-Movie People. There are plenty of others.

Love the Deadpool trailer -- is it going to get its own thread?

Sure. You can create any new movie threads you want around here. If you need help, let me know.

Personally, I'm not sure what to think. I'm not crazy about Ryan Reynolds or the Deadpool character. I'll have to wait to see how critics and other fans see it before I set out to watch it.

Sophie Turner and her 'I don't want to brag but she's pretty sweet!' Love. Jean's one of my favorites so, you know, I'm thrilled by this. I wasn't exactly wowed by her treatment in the first films (less said about The Last Stand the better) but I am looking forward to this a lot.

Also McAvoy with the shaved head... I had no idea who he was when I watched the whole bit with Stan Lee and then watched the X-Men panel and was just 'Ooooooh!'

(And, I love that Channing Tatum showed up. I'm honestly kind of okay with him playing Gambit who is another one of my faves.)

It's a good look for McAvoy. Who knew he had such a great skull under all that fabulous hair?

Not sure how I feel about Magneto, Storm, and Psylocke as part of the Four Horseman. Yikes.

DOFP:  Excellent movie.  I'm not a fan of dystopian societies, but I wanted to see more of the alternate future with the Sentinels.

I couldn't stand that it was a story about Mystique, who is a supporting character at best.  The fate of the world is dependent on Sad Raven being less sad.

It was ridiculous for the Sentinels to be able to acquire mutant powers without Rogue, whose powers should have been centered around the movie.  I'm not a fan of Anna Paquin's Rogue, but there should have made mention of Rogue's power as what makes the Sentinels adaptable.

I can't believe that Iceman got hot.

Loved Kitty.  I wanted to see more of the mutants who were fighting the Sentinels of the future.

DOFP The Rogue Cut:  Singer made the right decision to cut the Rogue scenes.  The theatrical version flowed better.

I appreciate that Rogue's power was mentioned.

Ugh, the Beast/Mystique scene.  It's leading up to the Mystique storyline in Apocalypse.

Hmm. Poccy kind of looks like Emperor Palpatine decided to go for a Fantasy Knight cosplay.

Storm looks great. And I'm finding myself impressed with Betsy's post-Siege Perilous look. I prefer Psylocke in pants, to be honest, but this doesn't look nearly as bad as I always assumed that particular look would in real life. Hell, it even looks like it stays on!

I'm trying to make my peace with it. Gambit is my favourite comic book character, and I was desperate for him to be involved in the X-Men movies. Then I got him, but in a crappy movie, and only for about ten minutes.

Now he's getting his own movie, but he's played by a guy that I've tried to like, but just find so fucking boring. I didn't pay much attention to Tatum before he was announced as Gambit. I'd seen him in supporting roles in a couple of movies, and thought he was stiff and cast solely because he's good looking. Once I knew he was going to be Gambit, I watched more of his movies, determined to find something to enjoy about him. There's just... nothing. I'll still go and see Gambit, because it's Gambit and I love the character, but I'm not particularly excited about it.

But then, the last X-Men movie I enjoyed was X-Men 2, so I'm probably already setting myself up to be disappointed. Oh, and that screenshot from the new movie looks more like a porn parody still to me. Those costumes look cheap as hell and Apocalypse looks like a sad old man. Can't be real, surely. Are SNL doing an X-Men skit with Olivia Munn or something? I didn't think this franchise could get cheesier than McAvoy in First Class.

Is it bad that I really think that Apocalypse should be...I don't know...taller?  The fact that Storm looks taller then him just doesn't look right to me.

I agree, Psylocke's costume translated better than one would have thought, but it still looks like a cosplay costume.

Apocalypse should be taller. He should be huge and imposing and terrifying. Not a crotchety old man in purple facepaint. Apocalypse was always the scariest villain the X-Men faced, because he was so powerful and so immune to reason and empathy. An implacable foe. Magneto was a corrupt idealist, but just as human (pardon the generalisation, Mags) and emotional as the heroes. He could be reasoned with and might even see things your way. Mr. Sinister was a creepy sociopath, but his obsessions left big vulnerabilities to be exploited. Sabretooth was all muscle and not much brains. The Sentinels were imposing but easily destroyed. Mammomax was... well, Mammomax was a joke, and no one remembers him anyway. It was Apocalypse who made you fear for the X-Men, whenever they went up against him. This dude just looks like he'll shake his fist and tell them to get off his lawn. And I wouldn't be surprised if Jean Grey is taller than him.

Ugh, Tatum is best in buddy cop romcoms.  I love 21/22 Jump Street.  Then, I get sad when I think that Jenko is the face of Gambit.

Gambit is mysterious and plays a good mind-game with women.  I can't imagine Tatum being able to pull off a suave, questionable characterization of Gambit.

I was re-watching the XMen cartoon, and Apocalypse wasn't a cheesy character.  Even in a cartoon, he was badass.  In the comics, Cable can't get rid of Apocalypse.  Entire storylines and cross-overs are devoted to bringing down Apocalypse.  Now, he's a sad man who yells at kids to get off his lawn.

Adding from my last post:  I keep looking at that Storm/Apocalypse/Psylocke photo.  I wonder why Singer&Co. decided to include Psylocke when there are other interesting, different mutants in the XMen franchise.  A cameo, maybe.  She's really not needed when Jean Grey is a major character.

That's why I liked seeing Sunspot, Blink, and Bishop in the future.  (I did assume that Sunspot was Pyro at first.)  For the 80s theme, Boom Boom and Dazzler seem like a better fit.  I'm just hoping that there's not much Psylocke--specifically, less Olivia Munn--in this movie.

I kinda wonder how Singer will address Nightcrawler in Apocalypse with first meeting him in XMen 2.  He waved over Toad from XMen 1.

DOFP The Rogue Cut: I forgot to ask regarding the scene Charles et al. visit Quicksilver.  Did the Mom tell the little girl to go upstairs to her sister?  Am I assuming that there are two sisters?  Maybe the Scarlet Witch and Polaris?  I haven't had a chance to re-watch the Rogue cut.
