Season 3: Wishes and Speculations

Whoa.

I think I see real possibilities for a big storyline next season. As I watched I came to the conclusion that Fig will go down for embezzlement.

My prediction is that she'll end up in her own prison even though that would never happen in real life. I also predict she will be pregnant with her husband's baby since they made such a big deal out of him sleeping with her at the end of the season.

-I want about as much of Piper as we had this season.

-More Alex. I find her vastly more interesting then Piper.

-More of everyone else, like my girls Sophia,Poussey, and Yoga.

-For some reason, I'd like to see another mental health professional/counselor other then Healey brought in. Someone no-nonense, actually non-judgemental (unlike Healey), who doesn't take crap but is compassionate.

-In total agreement for togetherforgood, Fig in prison, pregnent by her gay husband. Man oh Man, that would by a juicy story.  Hell, the complexities of that situation would go a long way to making her somewhat sympathetic.

I actually don't want to see Fig at Litchfield. I think it would be a little contrived. I think there are more interesting characters out there, and we understand enough of Fig that I don't really want to see any more of her. But also, I think it would be deliciously true to life if she just got away with all of the embezzlement, at least for a couple of years, because the warden or whoever covers up the scandal. I'm interested to see whether conditions at Litchfield change now that money isn't being funnelled away.

I want Chang's backstory, and Flores'.

I want Bennett gone. Daya, boring as I find her, can stay. But I want the higher-ups to catch on to the fact that it's his baby, and have him go to jail for rape.

I think I'd also like to see someone leave the prison and follow their story as they try and rebuild life on the outside. We had this to a very limited extent with Taystee (for one episode) and Alex (though she spent her time hiding out in her apartment; I'm curious as to how she paid for anything). Maybe they'll end up doing this in a later season with Piper, though, once she's finished her sentence. It'd be an easy way for them to fade her out of the show while not cutting her out completely once she leaves Litchfield.

That might be an avenue for Piper in season 5, but at the rate they're going she should still have two seasons left on her sentence.  Ha.  Which is fine.  After 5 seasons it'd probably be healthy for me to divest emotionally from this show anyhow...

Things I would love to see happen in season 3:

1) Piper taking center stage again. I want to see her involved in prison politics, to have an initiative and help change things for the better. To see her evolve and be more in a proactive mode, you know. Taylor Schilling definitely needs to have a lot more screen time than she did in season 2. She's such a talented actress (and complete revelation to me honestly) who simply shines on screen so I think the show needs to stop wasting her talent and start using it again, for their own sake. Why would they want to keep the Ferrari in the garage, anyway? It's ludicrous. (it's a horrible analogy, I know)

2) Crazy Eyes, Taystee, Poussey, to fade into the background a bit. One of the greatest things about this show is that it has incredible cast, great ensemble that's lovely to watch. Still some of them work better in supporting roles re: season 1, and Suzanne in particular had much more powerful impact on me with less screen time. Less is more, in this case.

3) Red regaining the respect and power she used to have. I just enjoy this character so much and want to see her on top of the world. Kinda.

4) Benett and Daya to figure things out so the story can finally move forward. Loved them in season 1 but was kind of bored with them in season 2. But I find them cute despite the obvious wrongness of their situation.

5) I also enjoy watching all the friendships on the show (Piper/Nichols, Poussey/Taystee etc.) so it would be nice if they take time to strengthen those friendships. And possibly make some new ones.

6) More of Yoga Jones and Benett's back-stories.

7) Also, would LOVE to see Miss Claudette back in Litchfield. Michelle Hurst is incredible actress and gives this character such an authoritative, haunting presence. Missed her greatly in season 2.

8) Piper's love triangle put to rest. I can see her and Larry slowly becoming close friends, which I think suits them better than being lovers. They need time for that though, for wounds to heal properly and all. As for Alex, I'm a bit indecisive about her and Piper. On the one hand, I'm not a big fan of manipulative (or any kind of) drug dealers and honestly, with everything we've seen so far, I just don't see how in the world can they ever have a healthy relationship. On the other, I love seeing compelling acting and sparkling chemistry on my screen and these two actresses have that, which makes them enjoyable to watch. So I think I'll just sit back and enjoy the ride. We'll see what comes out of it.

9) I want to see who will be Piper's new lawyer and will he/she have any meaningful interactions with our Pipes.

I agree about Fig. If she ends up at Litchfield it would be totally contrived. Plus if it did happen I can't see her story playing out any way that wouldn't be totally obvious. Plus she was totally right, people in her situation usually get away with the recommendation on their way out not an arrest.

No worse than Jenji's oft-trotted out Trojan Horse one [and that horse is dead, Jenji.  Stop beating it.]

ETA:

Guess it's not really a spoiler since I guess technically it's casting news and he did just tweet it, but sounds like Pablo might not be in season 3 at all [and that was likely given his role on an upcoming HBO show]--

Been rewatching and now I have a few more wishes and 'wanks.

- I want to learn more about Chang. I love this actress so much. She's just hilarious. I've seen her in different shows over the years and have always liked her.

- I want a glimpse of Danita, Sophia's beautician rival. Or maybe I don't. She's become legendary in my mind, almost as awesome as My So-Called Life's mysterious Tino.

- Is there a White Cindy? If so, I want to see her hanging out in the background with Danita. :)

Definitely agree.

I'm also very interested in Nicky's storyline (my fav among the inmates), and curious to see how they'll develop her relationship with Morello..

Some things I'd like to see happen in season 3 are-

1) For Red to bring Piper into the family, get her involved in the prison politics and then for the lie about Red's shop to be revealed.

2) Media attention forces the warden to do his job and he's actually good at it which makes things difficult for the some inmates and cos.

3) Alex becomes the big drug dealer on campus.

4) We deal with the fallout of Vee - the girls find it difficult to be the tightknit group they used to be and the news of Vee's death hits Taystee and Crazy Eyes hard. I want the funny gifable girls back too but so much happened last season that it feels wrong to just ignore it.

5) Until someone on p1 suggested Poussey and Soso I never even considered them as a potential couple but OMG they would be so cute together.

For S3, I'm clear that I want no more of Piper's outside world. No Larry; no Polly; no Piper's brother. They're not needed any more.

Beyond that, I don't know. I'm two episodes away from the end of S2 (although spoiled for what will happen), and I'm just troubled by this season. I've enjoyed it in the sense that I think the episodes were generally well written and acted, but I've found the overall arc incoherent and very problematic. I don't like that the black family are being shown as the villainous family. I don't like that the only woman in authority is incompetent and corrupt. I don't like that the political protesters are shown as mockable. I don't like that I have no idea why Boo betrayed Red. I don't like that Caputo and Healy are, as of Ep 11, seeming to be the most sympathetic and well intentioned characters. I don't like that Piper has no connection to the Vee/Red battle, which makes Piper's role in S2 unclear.

So I think what I want most for S3 is a return to prisoners against the prisons. I'm fine with absurdist humor rather than documentary precision, but I want the basics to be the humanity of the prisoners struggling against an institution that denies them this. I think I'd also like to see one or more characters who are spiritually innocent--Marissa Alexanders or Debra Harrells.

I really hope there's no one-off Big Bad like Vee in season 3.  They got their yayas out on that front and tried something new, and that's all well and good, but I hope it's out of their system.  I'd like the struggles in season 3 to come from our established characters.  I know there is one prominent piece of casting news in Mary Steenburgen, but I don't expect she'll hijack the season in quite the same way.  At least I hope not.

I've changed my mind a bit about Bennett/Daya; I don't want them to get rid of their storyline entirely but I do think they should be put on the backburner for a bit. They took up way too much screentime during season 2. This show moves super slowly; over two seasons we've only covered what, like 8 months? Everyone else's storylines move at a pretty fast pace, but there's not much they can do with a fixed timeline like a nine-month pregnancy (hence entire episodes about spinach and prenatal vitamins). If the show continues at the same pace, Daya might only give birth during season 4.

In season 3, I would like Bennett to realise exactly how immature Daya is. I think he's seen glimpses of it so far but it hasn't really sunk in that the mother of his child is mentally a teenager. (Actually, how old is Daya meant to be? I get the impression she's 19-21, certainly not in her mid-20s or older.)

We deal with the fallout of Vee - the girls find it difficult to be the tightknit group they used to be and the news of Vee's death hits Taystee and Crazy Eyes hard.

I'd love to see this, too. I want to know how the African American women will renegotiate their place in the prison without Vee. In season 1, they were IMO a pretty tight-knit group, but they didn't have any power whatsoever -- partly because they didn't have a Red/Gloria-like mother figure to rally around and who would strategise on their behalf. There's the potential for them to slip back to being the most powerless 'tribe' at Litchfield, but it'd be interesting if they decided that they liked the power they held in season 2, and that they can still try and wield some, somehow, if they work towards common goals as a group (and in a more democratic way than the white/Hispanic groups, where Red and Gloria still basically call the shots). That's basically what they ended up doing at the end of season 2, when they turned against Vee as a group. Though I'm not sure how they could improve their position within the prison without dealing contraband.

I am so curious about what Nicky ends up doing with all that heroin. She's one of my favourite characters -- a great combination of bravado and vulnerability. I hope she takes on a bigger role in season 3.

I want Fig in the prison.

I want Pornstache away from Litchfield, but I still want to see what happens to him

(though that doesn't seem like it will happen what with Pablo tweeting what he did).

I want MOAR Alex Vause, with or without Pipes.

Less Susanne, pleez.

Zero Larry. I couldn't stand Jason Biggs before this show and now I loathe him and resent the screen time he takes from our inmates. Don't care either way about Polly.

Poussey elevated to regular with more screen time than any other cast member (seriously, Samira is so fucking talented and beautiful!), and to hear her sing again, preferably a capella.

Boo becomes a big bad.

Caputo demoted and a new Assistant Warden come in. Also let's find out what happened to Chinless. I loved her.

The inmates all gossiping about how Rosa went out in a blaze of glory, and dead Vee.

Pensatucky hitting on Vause. (LOL)

I want to see more of Taystee's brainpower. She's a little brill, I think.

Less Red.

Daya and Stumpy? *yawn*

More of Gloria continuing to be a smartass/badass. I like the way she operates.

More songs from O'Neill on the banjolele

That's all I can think of right now. :)

I'd love more Gloria. She is really too good to be on the backburner.

I'd like more Red/Piper development.

Considering Alex is the type of person still holding a grudge against someone who dumped her eight years ago, I'm thinking she won't be getting over what Piper did anytime soon. They might have sex but she is going to be furious. I don't think they'll have anything close to the friendly relationship they had in mid-Season 1.

Personally, I don't care about Alex except for how she relates to Piper. I don't care about Alex scenes if they aren't with Piper. But I also think she might start using in prison. I know she told Nicky she didn't miss it and was always a horrible junkie. But she doesn't have Nicky's support network to help her stay clean. And she lies to herself and others. My bet would be an episode with flashbacks to her after her mom's death, her starting using, and the arrest. Punctuated with her using again in real time.

She could be dealing instead but I don't know how much of a villain they want to make her. Taystee was under the influence of the only mom she ever knew and was quickly removed from the drug circle after it went to heroin and she gave it to Nicky. They let her go very dark for about a second before they pulled back. Alex would just be a bored, angry girl pissed off she is back in jail for the crimes she did commit. It would make her irredeemable.  Being a dealer to unknown strangers is one thing. Doing it to girls that we have come to know and love would be another especially after Tricia. I am not sure they want to go there and have Alex be the new Pornstache/Vee. But who knows. If they do she won't be in season 4.  There won't be anywhere else to take that character.

Another Alex possibility is she starts using with Nicky. Nicky stayed clean because of the influence of her prison family. She could easily be led astray by a friend who is using. That would be a way to make Alex dark, having her contribute to Nicky's fall, without committing 100%.

I don't think the third season will go by without Nicky ODing (fatally or not).

Well, I just binge watched both seasons; I didn't really have the time to watch them when it was airing and I kept putting off watching until I was ready, and I am glad that I did. I liked both seasons, and of course I have my own problems with them, but looking forward at season 3, I do have my own list that might be different in some ways than others on this thread.

1) I agree with the statement that there should be more Piper. Actually, to expand that a bit, I would like more Piper interactions with the other inmates. This season, she felt largely disconnected from everyone and although I liked seeing her with Red, it felt like she largely interacted with the outside world and Healy. It's not a horrible thing, as we got to see her outside her new environment but it felt unsatisfying and I like Piper when she's with the other inmates. Season 1 had a good balance of her 'outside' and 'inside' the prison world.

2) That brings me to this point: no, or very little, Larry. Whatever qualms I have about Jason Biggs, although they're not major, I did like Larry and felt sympathetic toward him...well, until they screwed things up by hooking him up with Polly just to make him like Piper (and I also don't buy him supposedly being friends with Polly before Polly and Piper, or whatever was said in the episode that they hooked up), but that's besides the point. I do like Larry to an extent, but his purpose isn't needed. If he's not really connected to Piper anymore, then his role should be basically nonexistent and I predict he'll maybe show up in two episodes anyway. I'm not quite sure of his status for season 3, but less is fine for me. He served his purpose season 1 and in the first half of season 2, him and Piper kinda got closure then they ran his character into the ground with Polly. Also, more Polly and Piper. I like Piper having a best friend to talk to and like she's said, Piper's been losing her friends quite quickly. So if more Polly means a happy Piper, then I'm all for it. But Larry's presence has run its course and he can appear only if it's for Piper.

3) I did like the long season story arc in season 2. I actually liked the divisions within the races and also between the races. It actually made sense, but it also ruined characters for me, Suzanne and Taystee especially. I need Taystee to make up for what she's done, because she made a major mistake not only with Poussey but now with Nicky. At the same time, though, I need less of her and her friends because they're my least favourites. Taystee's the only really likeable one for me. Suzanne's good in very small doses, but I get that she'll probably get some more screentime to help bring her back on track and get her mental state stable again. I just really found myself hating Vee and her 'crew' and on Poussey's side 100%. Speaking of Poussey, she's my favourite character and I want her to make Taystee work for a true apology. I like their friendship, but it's been tainted by what's been done.

4) I'm not a huge fan of Daya/Bennett, not like I was in season 1, but I do like Bennett. Season 3, I want them to take a break from each other, though, and figure out what the other wants.

5) Actually, to add on to this, I want Daya and Bennett to have separate storylines. Bennett did have one, kind of, in season 2, but I want one completely separate from Daya. Actually, having some backstories on all the guards would be nice. Because they're important too. And Caputo, because I like the guy.

6) I like Nicky and look forward to her storyline, but I hope it doesn't end with her OD'ing, or whatever.

7) I need a serious break from Healy. I'd like to see a lot less of Healy. Like, a lot less. The guy keeps rubbing me the wrong way and it's sad that the only interaction with a female inmate that isn't white was with Suzanne in the last episode of season 2. Every other time, his conversations are with white inmates. He's so sexist and homophobic and as much as I want to know why he's hating lesbians so much, I'm not sure I want a whole flashback episode dedicated to him and his mail order bride.

8) Figure out Pensatucky's role season 3. So, is she redeemed, or on her way to redemption? I can't help but think that she will be easily swayed back to the 'other side of the tracks' and start preaching again. I really, really hated her in season 1 and I warmed up to her halfway through season 2, but only because she calmed down.

9) I do want to see the prison environment change. Not in a location sense, but in a financial sense. Now that Fig's gone, maybe that money will be brought back to the prison and things will be better.

10) I like Gloria a lot. I think, out of all the women leaders, she is the most qualified. I like Red too, but she's been reduced to a weak woman and I want to see her climb her way up. I do want more Gloria, though, because I like her group the best. All of the girls are likeable in some way. So if they get more prominent roles in season 3, I won't complain,

11) And finally, the romance on this show. I'm fairly lukewarm on Piper/Alex. I think both of them have a lot of growing to do and as much as I like Piper, she has many, many faults and she's falling into the trap that Alex plants on her. Well, hopefully Piper doesn't lie to Alex about how she got back into prison. But I think Alex has more of a redemption arc to go through and she needs to do that separate from Piper. So until that happens, I don't want them being a real couple. I'm sure they'll screw each other throughout the season, but I don't want it to grow into more than that. Save that for the potential season 4. I also kind of like Soso, need to know why she's there, and I think her and Poussey could be cute together. Poussey and Nicky would be even cuter, especially with both of them being so intelligent. And that's pretty much it with me and couples.

12) More interactions with various characters. I like them mixing it up, and especially since we don't really see the races interacting with other races, I'd love to see more friendships blended that way.

I really fucking hate Healey.  A lot. But, in his defense, he had several scenes with Taystee in Season 1 that suggested a fairly positive relationship. And he was supposed to write her a letter of recomendation to get out. I don't know if he did but she did get out so I assume so.

In general, the white inmates seemed to be favored by the whole place. At least until they couldn't turn their back on Red's smuggling anymore. That is why inmates trying to clam Piper gets special treatment is kind of silly to me.  Half of the white inmates run around like they run the place.

1. . If you are going to keep Daya and Bennett around make them interesting apart and together.  They are just so boring.  I wouldn't have a problem with them as a couple.  I have seen prison shows before with very hot and heavy guard/prisoner relationships on it but for them to work both parties need to be interesting and they are just not interesting on the show.  As a matter of fact Daya and Bennett are probably the two least interesting people on the show.

2.  More Boo,  I want to know more about her.  We still don't know her backstory.  I want it.  She makes a compelling villianish character.   I want to see more of her in season 3.

3,  More Piper.  I want her to interact with the other inmates more.  The show is at its best with Piper interacting with people like Red, Nicky and such.

4.  I like Piper and Alex and I want them to ultimately be together but I don't need their relationship to take over the show.

Everything about the acting, writing & staging in this show is top-notch...but I'm not going to be able to stick with it, because I just don't need to spend an hour of my valuable time every week watching mean & manipulative people be mean & manipulative to each other. Guess I'm getting older, but I find myself asking, no matter how fabulous a show's acting & production values are, is this really how I want to spend my time, watching folks stick it to each other like this?

very week watching mean & manipulative people be mean & manipulative to each other.

That isn't how I'd describe the show, at all. There is a lot of love and random acts of kindness between the prisoners. And even when people screw up or are mean and manipulative they usually walk it back. Taystee returned to Poussey. Alex and Piper spent more time joking and cuddling then  screwing each other over. Even when Alex visited her in prison or in Chicago more time was dominated by teasing and jokes then vitriol. With the cellphone, Piper refused to turn in a woman she had absolutely no relationship with and had never even spoken to to get something she wanted.  Red just wants her prison family back and gets it when she stops manipulating and just starts being honest and apologetic. Everyone genuinely mourned Trish. Gloria cares about pretty much everyone (advising Alex in season 1, helping Norma find another outlet that won't get her in trouble, always being there for her girls). Daya just doesn't want someone to go to prison because of her lies. Lorna just wants Rosa to not die in prison walls.

Aside from Vee, even the worst people have redeeming qualities. Pennsatucky, an objectively terrible and not too  bright human being, is still smart enough to see through Healey's bull shit ("men being in charge never helped me") but also compassionate enough to feel for him. Healey, a scumbag who was going to let a woman be murdered because she turned out to like girls, still has it in him to show compassion and remorse. Fig sees cutting corners in prison as a way to ultimately do more good by having her husband pass legislation to reduce prison sentences for non-violent crime. Maybe that is bull shit but she still has enough of a conscience to need a bull shit excuse to justify it. Pornstache, a horrible human being, still is willing to stand up and claim his child in a way the otherwise better person, Benent, will not.

Most of these people are good people. Which Piper tries to explain to Larry before he dismisses them as criminals. Even the bad people are seldom completely bad. The one exception being a through and through sociopath. Yes, there is manipulation and lies. None of these people are perfect, with the possible exception of Poussey (which is the thing that keeps me from loving her, tbh).  That is part of the human condition. It isn't the only feature of the show by a very long stretch.

Also, strangely, I still want Polly to remain Piper's best friend.

I want that too! I like Polly, a lot. She has been with Piper for a long time and put up with a lot of shit. Also, Polly and Larry just really make more sense. And I am pretty sure it will happen. Piper has a lot of flaws. So many flaws. But she is, ultimately, a forgiving person. She mostly forgave Alex for turning her in, lying to her about it, and making her feel like shit for suspecting her. I mean there is stuff to work out there but she is more over it than not. She pretty quickly got over Healey walking away to let her be killed. She got over Pennsatucky getting her stuck in the SHU and then trying to murder her. Got over Crazy Eyes pissing all over her floor and even felt as though she had some reason to have to apologize to her over the things Larry said and let her call her a terrible person. Even though she had done nothing wrong other than tell her fiance the God's honest truth. She is cool with Red despite trying to starve her out. If anything Piper tends to let people who screwed her over turn it around on her too easily rather than being overly vindictive.

If anything, once she got over the shock I think a little bit of her likes that Polly was brought down to her level. Piper was genuinely pissed off at Polly and Larry showing up in prison. But a little bit of her seemed to also really love getting to lash out at them.
