S06.E01: Smoke and Mirrors

Recommended Posts

I know the episode hasn't aired yet, but I just have to say that I'm a little surprised this show is jumping six months ahead... though I guess it would be pretty boring to watch Divya lay around on bedrest. And bonus, Divya will be back in those short tight dresses (cue eye rolling) in no time!

They've almost always jumped ahead with the start of a new season, I don't know that they've ever really shown what goes on during the winter - it's not very interesting in the Hamptons that time of year.

Wow. My Evan-hate reawakened with a roar. Everything that defines Evan -- his meddling, his gossiping, his infantile focus on his own needs, his silly overreactions -- were back in force.

If Hank is back, does that mean Jeremiah is out? He had been pretty unequivocal about not working with Hank ever again. I appreciated how he was willing to support Divya's birth "plan" until it was clearly impossible. And yes, I would have preferred to see the emergency C-section at the top of the Montauk Lighthouse.

Will Boris allow the Lawsons to continue living on the Shadowpond grounds? Should we expect a Boris crisis six episodes from now? I like Boris a lot and I wish they'd find a better way to use the character.

So who is Emma's father? Hank? Evan? Eddie? Oh God, please don't let it be Eddie! Damn. It's probably Eddie.

My first thought was that Emma was Rafa's stalker. But then it did cross my mind that she might also be looking for Eddie, even before Divya got that text from Rafa. So... whose daughter is she? She seems slightly too old to be Hank or Evan's kid but I guess anything is possible.

As someone who just gave birth (well, 8 months ago), I thought Divya's labor was way more realistic than most televised births, so that was good. I had to laugh a bit over the birth plan, but I liked that Divya (and Sacani, as her advocate) kept to it as long as she could, but she switched gears when she needed to. Plus, Sacani trying to show her how to hula hoop was pretty hilarious. I was waiting for Divya to go out in the snow and get stuck and go into labor, but they tricked us all!

I'm surprised Boris hasn't gotten annoyed with Hank by now and kicked him out of Shadowpond. On the other hand, Hank knows way too much about him, so he probably figures it's better to give Hank some time before he reels him back in to his schemes.

Personally, I kind of enjoyed the glimpse at life in the Hamptons during the winter. Was that Kevin Eubanks playing guitar in the band?

I love my light summer fluff and I'm so happy this show is back.  I'm pretty sure that Sacani will stick around since the actor is now listed in the opening credits.

I'm mildly intrigued by the introduction of Emma.  We'll see how well she integrates with the rest of the characters.  This show has been kind of hit or miss when adding or introducing new characters.

Well, Bungalow Summer, you can just come over here and sit next to me! I hate the breath out of that loser, too. And I ask myself, why am I watching this, even On Demand?

Well, I wanted to see how Divya's (who I do like) baby birth turned out. That was pretty well handled and I loved that she had the puja ceremony. That was fun. Then, to see how they brought Hank back, because they had to. I do love Jeremiah, but don't think they have a show without Hank. I also think that Emma is Eddie's daughter. Don't know if I care, but hopefully, she's more like Hank than Evan. We'll see, although I'm not certain I'll be sticking around this season.

Me, too!  It's one of my guilty-pleasure shows.  I adore Jeremiah.  I just saw Ben Shenkman in "Angels in America", and was blown away, so now I love Jeremiah even more.  Although, I don't think Divya and he would be a good fit romantically.  At all.

Glad this show is back.  I also think Emma is Eddie's daughter.  She looks too young to be Hank's or Evan's but you never know.  I would like Divya & Jeremiah to get together.  I love seeing Boris but please give him a storyline.

i love me some RP. hamptons porn, pretty sunshine, Divya's outfits - it's all good. I think it's clear Emma is looking for Eddie. I want to see a flashback of Divya and Jeremiah having a very explicit conversation stating they are just friends. Is he helping her raise this baby?

Was no one living in the guest house? I was surprised by Evan's throw away line that he and Paige had just gotten their own place. I heart Paige.

ETA: i wasn't sure where to put this spoiler from TV Guide:

It's been awhile since Hank had some romance in his life on Royal Pains. Any new love interests on the horizon? — Ramon

Yep! Hank will romance a spa owner named Charlotte. And while they have smoking-hot chemistry in the bedroom, they can't quite get their act together when they're not between the sheets. Also getting a new love interest is Jeremiah, who'll put aside his long-standing feelings for Divya when a new woman named Viviana catches his eye.

Glad Sacani has been bumped up to a regular, as he has been a great addition to the show and is part of the reason why I'm still watching even though this show drives me bonkers. I agree that Hank is the main character of the show, even though it has a bit of an ensemble flavor these days, and they couldn't just have him off gallevanting around with Boris the whole season. I assume Hank and Sacani will work something out in regards to HankMed-- or maybe since Hank has been gone awhile, Sacani's ire has burned out and they will at least be able to work together on a professional level.

I am so glad that this show is back and that was a fun premiere. Campbell Scott being in an episode is always a highlight for me so I hope that Boris is given a storyline that makes sense and keeps him around.

I was thinking that Emma might be Hank's but then Eddie does sound more plausible.

I'm sure I'm going to feel like a dummy next week, but I kind of wonder if Emma isn't Boris's kid.  They spent so much of the episode making a big deal about the progression of Boris's fake-itis and fathers passing down genetic diseases, I thought they were leading to a whole storyline where Boris has another kid he might have passed the gene to.  Does Boris's illness only show up in male family members?

I couldn't tell if Emma was looking for the Lawsons (which would make her Eddie's) or if she was looking for whoever lives at Shadow Pond.  She doesn't really seem to know much about the man she's looking for.  Then again, they had Evan mention his father and use the word "brother" about 90 times when he was talking to her, so that's probably supposed to be another clue that she's Eddie's kid.

I am thinking way to hard about this show.

I actually get much more annoyed with Hank than with Evan these days. I can't be bothered to remember too many details about this show, but as this episode continued I remembered that I was over all the snide remarks Hank makes about and to Evan.

I will sit quietly in my liking-both-Evan-and-Boris corner now.

I tell myself I'm going to try to like Evan since he's so front and center in each episode, but damn - I can't watch him for more than 10 seconds before wanting to drop him into a wood chipper head first. He does seem to be better with Paige but then I start thinking about how she deserves better and the rage spiral begins again. It's not enough to put me off the show, but I'm glad I have a FFWD button even though I risk missing some key dialog when the little weasel's talking. Sigh.

Emma's father is the Fonz.  And that's fine with me, because I love it when he shows up.  I'd like to see more of him.  Whenever he's on screen it doesn't matter what anybody else is doing, he somehow commands attention.  Steals the scene.

Love Divya and Jeremiah and the hula hoop conversation -- great post, Tara! -- and pretty much everything with the two of them.

The weakest points in the show as far as I'm concerned are Hank and Evan.  Just how much surgery is Mark Feuerstein going to get, anyway?  Looks like he's following in Bruce Jenner's footsteps.  The inability to show facial expressions doesn't make him a better actor, that's for sure.  Can't decide if I don't like Evan R Lawson the character or Paul Costanza the actor.  Boring, whiny, never really comes across with any personality.

I'm kind of hoping Emma is Hank's (not Eddie's).  It would be interesting to see Hank be a father to a young woman after all these years.  It was hard to tell how old Emma was supposed to be - I'm guessing anywhere from 18 to 24.

I found myself getting confused about the timeline and what was going on with Boris's leg.

Motherhood suits Divya - she looked happy and healthy.

WTF was that Bethenny cameo?  She shouldn't try to be an actress, she was awful at playing herself.  She was always complaining how much she hates the Hamptons (preferring Montauk), so her being on the show made no sense?  Unless they were supposed to be in Montauk, I wasn't paying enough attention.

I liked that Oheka Castle got so much screentime last night.  I hope the owner is recovering after being shot in the head.

Is that who that was?  I thought she was just a tacky extra.

Well, according to the commercials, Divya seems to be in the hospital in labor. That rules out all the silly scenerios some came up with over at TWOP. Too bad--some of those were very creative!

I am so pissed. This show is half cliche as it is. The least they could have done is rip the cover off the pregnancy. I wanted Jill!

Wow. My Evan-hate reawakened with a roar. Everything that defines Evan -- his meddling, his gossiping, his infantile focus on his own needs, his silly overreactions -- were back in force.

I really did see much of this. Evan was pissed off that Hank just up and left with Boris. I thought it was kind of selfish of Hank, but I think he's generally an asshole most of the time. I don't really need to like a character to enjoy a show, but the show's been pretty consistent with Hank being inconsiderate and mostly just interested in treating the case of the week. I don't think Hank realizes how much Evan identifies HankMed as *them*, given how the show started. This wasn't nearly the level of Evan buffonery from last season. In the flashback, they had a problem and instead of the usual Evan whining, they compromised. I thought it was reasonable and an example of putting the business first.

So... whose daughter is she?

This is just stupid and I do not give a fuck. Long lost daughter? Because why?

I'm surprised Boris hasn't gotten annoyed with Hank by now and kicked him out of Shadowpond.

I hate that I know this, but they have an actual lease. Boris did try to kick them out once because he was pissed off at Hank, but they made up and Hank insisted that they draw up a lease. So there's something legal in place now and he can't just go and do that.

This is big thing of mine: TPTBs on any show, "knowing the show they have." Is it really necessary that Hank be the main character? I don't think show. Was it necessary in S1? Yes. A long running show tends to evolve and there's no reason to stick to what worked in S1. The show is more about running this specialty medical service for quirky rich people now. What's wrong with that. Evan, Paige, Sacani, and Divya have good chemistry. Hank has always been written as self-centered. He's only been into his cases and never wanted to be involved with the business side of HankMed. There's been plenty of times when Evan was begging Hank to promote HankMed, and Hank used to tool on Evan going to fancy parties to recruit clients for retainer; i.e., his actual job as CFO of HankMed.

I think TPTB really missed the mark to evolve the show. The first flashback was interesting. How was Sacani doing running HankMed? How were Evan and Paige working on their marriage? How was Divya dealing with that she's about to become a single mother? These are all interesting enough questions to watch on the show without having Hank Doing Sooper Doctor Things front and center.

They create this interesting character in Sacani, and develop what could have been a cliche ridden relationship with him and Divya, but we barely see any of this.

I was confused as to why Divya and Her father was hosting the baby puja at Shadow Pond. Divya lives with Jerimiah (Speaking of which isn't it her own house fixed by now?),  her father has his own estate, and Evan moved out of Shadow Pond.

So they were just using it as event site? Did they even get Boris's approval? He's not dead anymore.
