I wish he had taken at least another week off for his own sake. Maybe the staff wouldn't get paid if the show was closed and he's doing it for them?

In any event, I feel bad for him and didn't like watching him struggle to hold in his emotions during the monologue. Being consumed with worry and apprehension for his baby and having to put on a happy face and entertain America ... ugh.

He is the best interviewer in late night now and perhaps the history of late night shows.  Johnny was the king but he made it to much about himself often.  We all love him and he is an icon. 

I have watched Jimmy go through a difficult interview without glancing at the camera or showing disease.  Johnny did that routinely (for laughs usually).  

I don't like Ya Ya'a movie reviews or unnecessary censorship to name two regular segments and there are more.  His skits with Geronimo are often boring.  But I give him that for his comic genius and ease with guests. 

His cousin Saul is stellar.  His on the street segments are superior.   A true highlight for me.

It was nice to see the show get recognized. Jimmy does a great job putting guests at ease and bringing out their funny sides. I always enjoy his kid segments and when he talks to non-celebrities, like his remote interview with the Bar Mitzvah boy. Jon Stewart coming on didn't hurt!

The fact that the writing staff wasn't nominated I think shows more overall praise for the show and Jimmy himself. (The opposite of Seth Meyers, which was nominated for writing only.)

Jimmy is a master in interviews.  He makes everyone feel comfortable.  Occasionally he will have a reluctant or nervous guest and he turns them around with ease.  You never see him sweat.  Great show, I have been watching him since Win Ben Steins Money.  Terrible show but he stood out and I knew he would do more.  AND he likes to cook!

I got a little teary during Jimmy's monologue about Trump. He always pokes fun at politicians but is not really a political satirist per se, so it was even more affecting. Good for him.

There will be other nights for the Bachelor in Paradise skits and whatnot.

Yes, before I didn't really pay much attention to him before this year, unless there was a guest that I was interested in, because a tiny bit of me still resented him for The Man Show. Plus, while I think he's the best interviewer of the three network late night hosts on at the same hour, I felt that the show was the weakest in some ways, or at least I did before because I liked the gimmicks of The Tonight Show and wanted Stephen Colbert to be successful because of watching him from The Daily Show and then The Colbert Report. 

Ever since the birth of his youngest son though he's just been wonderful and put the other two late night hosts to shame. I just love how sincere, candid, and genuine that he is, and I don't think that Colbert and especially Fallon can pull off what Kimmel has been doing.

I don't watch talk shows unless someone I like is on, but I've always liked Jimmy Kimmel. He always seemed the most genuinely funny and least artificial of the American talk show hosts. But he also seemed fairly laidback and inoffensive (which surely helps attract the biggest spread of guests). However, this new side of him, which he's been showing over the last year or so, is fantastic. Socially conscious, aware and keen to make other people just switch on their brains and think. He's the sort of person America really needs right now, a genuinely good person to look at and listen to. Especially given the lack of such a figure in the supposedly serious news media.

I just watched the segment on Las Vegas he did last night, and it was fantastic. He hit every valid point about gun control in that ten minutes, he spoke passionately and truthfully, and you could feel his anger, hear it in the acid of his voice. I also really appreciated the silence of the audience, just listening to him, adding to the weight of the moment.

Those of us who aren't American have watched in utter bafflement at how the NRA and gun owners dictate public safety policy, repeatedly allowing these massacres to occur, because they like guns. Because their fucking fetishisation of them demands they be allowed to own them, to brag about how theirs is bigger than their buddy's. It's not about self defense, it's not about just wanting to shoot at gun ranges or hunt, because if it was, no one would want a semi-automatic rifle. But the truly sad thing is, Jimmy Kimmel knows nothing will change, just like President Obama knew nothing would change after Sandy Hook. The sick-headed Right will start spinning this into a conspiracy against them, into an attack on American values (as if shooting people at a country music concert outside a casino wasn't already a direct attack on American values), then NRA will bleat about the Second Amendment... and then it will all go away again until next time.

Anyway, I suppose the one good thing about the state America (and the world) is in is the political and social awakening of a lot of people, particularly those with the voice to reach yet more people.

Jimmy talks about how the NRA has politicians' balls "in their money clip".  Why can't the gun control lobby raise just as much if not more money, and put itsown lobbyists to work?  If it is all about the money, can't we get Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, etc., to fund this cause?  They are worth BILLIONS, and I'm just going to guess that they are for commonsense gun control.

Bill Maher & John Oliver addressed this separately... Gun control people [generally] do not contact their Congressmen / Senators... The majority of phone calls / emails are from NRA supporters. Therefore, it APPEARS that the majority of the constituents are against gun control...

I know that the line between this show and politics is a fine one this day, but we are starting to delve more into politics/political issues than Jimmy Kimmel.  Talking about the issues that Kimmel brings up on his show is fine, as long as we keep it in the context of the show.  Thanks!

 While I've never had much use for Jimmy Kimmel before, my verdict on the new, "woke" version: I love it.  Kimmel's talking about issues that hit close to home for him, whether it's healthcare because of his son's surgery or the Las Vegas massacre because he's a native.  Kimmel is speaking truth to power in his own way and I'm not only impressed, I've got a newfound respect for him because of it.

The annoying thing to me is when the media implies that Kimmel has never really tackled politics until recently...he's always tackled politics...he's made fun of Trump in subversive ways ...even in the summer of 2015...he's just doesn't do it on the level that Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers....But he ain't no Jimmy Fallon. He's always talked politics. Every night. But probably more in a Johnny Carson way.

--The funny thing is that Kimmel's detractors (and his detractors are so pissed off at him) keep saying that as a celebrity, he should stay in his lane...the irony is rich.

--In Kimmel's first year of his talk show, in 2003, John Ritter (who was starring on ABC's 8 Simple Rules and who was supportive of Kimmel) suddenly died. And Kimmel talked about him passing, and he cried. I wish that clip was online. But whenever Kimmel would go on his good friend Stern's show, Howard would play that clip to make fun of him. So this past week, a conservative street artist put up these posters of Kimmel crying...so he's essentially making fun of Kimmel on the same level that Kimmel's good friend  Howard Stern made fun of him...

I don't like the Kardashians at all, so I don't get her obsession with them, but I thought Lawrence did pretty well. Maybe it was because the other three guest hosts weren't that great either; although, I found them all charming in their own ways.

While I wouldn't want to replace Jimmy, if Jimmy could take a week off every year and let a new round round of guest hosts like he did twice this year, I think I might enjoy it as long as they were up for it like the guest hosts were this year. None of them were perfect, but I like how the show played to each of their strengths.

I'd be up for a guest host on Fridays if it meant five new shows a week. There are so many comics and comedic actors who'd be fun to watch.

Hate Yehya.  Not a fan of cousin Sal or his mom (Chippy?), either.  Or some of his mean pranks, like asking parents to tell their kids they (the parents) ate all of the kids Halloween candy.

But I still like Jimmy, though.  He's willing to laugh at himself.  I remember when he found a drowned tarantula in his pool and he admitted that he was afraid to fish it out, and he couldn't go into the pool until it was removed.  And don't forget when he woke up at 1 AM to find Rihanna, backup dancers, a boom box, and a film crew in his bedroom!  My favorite part was when he finally started to realize what was happening and he said something about "I still have my mouthpiece in!", then took it out and set on the bedside table.

He seems like he's a good husband and dad, and he's not afraid to stand up for things he believes in.  And I still don't understand why some people have made fun of him for the times he's been moved to tears on his show.  I cried right along with him when he told about how he found out his newborn son had a serious heart problem and would immediate surgery.

I haven't watched a segment with Yehya since his first one; he's been nothing but a FF blur to me since. The guy's been on so many times I assumed I was the only one who found him tedious.

I like Chippy, though, and still miss Uncle Frank. Jimmy's pretaped bits outside the studio (especially with kids) always crack me up. Occasionally I'll rewatch the Handsome Men's Club or his barbershop visits when I need a giggle.

Despite all of Jimmy's "It was a joke!" denials, he does retain some residual stink from The Man Show. I initially refused to watch JKL because of it, then saw some viral clips and eventually gave it a chance. I've even come around to tolerating Adam Carolla, which yeah. I'm as surprised as anyone.

I can't pick a favorite, but Jimmy and Seth Meyers are by far my top two late night hosts.

Jimmy and the producers might be his only fans. He is not funny at all.   Love aunt Chippy.  At first I thought she was forced then I saw an outtake of a segment with her.  Sal pushed her buttons by doing a scene over and over or changing it several times during rehearsal to get her riled.  :>)  

Jimmy is my favorite Late Night guy.  I was a fan of Letterman too.  Never Jay or Falon.

He doesn't know how to go off script when a guest tells a story that diverges from his list of questions, he has a tendency to rush them through so he can ask his next preplanned question even if what the guest was already saying was much more interesting. Hopefully he'll get better at that. 

Kimmel is much smoother in those situations, you can tell when he chucks the topics he was going to ask about and just let a guest do their thing if they're an interesting storyteller and it makes for much better interviews. It goes without saying that Fallon's the worst at interviews with that horrible fake laugh, plus it's so easy to tell when he's genuinely interested in a guest and when he's totally phoning it in.

He seems to have a very good sense of humor about himself and I've appreciated the more serious turns some of his monologues have taken. That one monologue about his son generated a ton of media and donations for that hospital, so good for him. 

One thing that crack me up about him is his utterly awkward, self-conscious walk at the beginning at the show. He's been on TV for most of his adult life and yet he walks out there like a kid giving a speech for the first time, it makes me laugh every time. If I were him, I'd probably start the show from the desk. ;)

Cool, cleaver and classy inviting filmmaker(?) Tommy Wiseau as the second segment after James Franco shilled his spinoff of Wiseau's "The Room".  Most folks wouldn't bother persuing the backstory, let alone offering due credit.

Last night they replayed the episode that aired the night of Doug Jones' winning the Alabama race (before Jimmy knew the results). One of the funniest lines of this season, in my opinion, is when Jimmy mocks the way Kayla Moore says "my lawyer is a Jew," placing emphasis on the "is a Jew" line. I was howling when I first watched the episode last week and I howled again last night. The way Jimmy looks at the camera and how he says it kills me!

Yeah, it's odd that Kimmel doesn't get enough credit for his interviewing skills. (Actually, many years ago, Entertainment Weekly's top TV critic said he's surprisingly great at interviewing female guests.

What I really like about Kimmel is that he gets a really substantial interview out of his guests, especially with the second guests.

Other late-night hosts aren't really that great. Conan, who's been doing it the longest, seems to set up his interview for a viral YouTube clip quote thing.

 

Re: Jake Byrd. I love him. As long as he does it a few times a year, I don't mind. Kimmel isn't overdoing him like James Corden has overdone Carpool  Karaoke, which is why reporters always fall for it a decade and a half later.

Has anyone else noticed that Jimmy seems to be stumbling over his words quite a bit lately? It seems like he can hardly get a punchline out without mixing up words or kind of stammering it out. It's something I've only noticed in the last few months. He doesn't appear to do it as much with guests, but it's become a staple of the monologue.

Oprah was so cute with Jimmy! Their friendship is fun to watch. Funny thinking back to when she (and I*) didn't like him at all.

The few times I've seen Diane Keaton on interview shows such as this, she has always seemed over the top and out of control.  At first, I thought there might be some substance involved, but I know I think (hope?) that she is actually quite nervous doing these things and is over-compensating.

Do you think Ted was prepared or told beforehand? I thought he was a good sport to respond to openly mean comments about his appearance in a good-natured way (on the surface, at least). I'm not sure he expected Jimmy to verbally go after him during the game. If Ted didn't know, it was rude to blindside someone who thought they were there to have a comedic feud over basketball. I'd just like to think Jimmy and his staff were fair to Ted.

Jimmy said he did a lot of research about the health care bill, but I'm not quite sure he's the representative my liberal self would have chosen to debate an experienced politician about other issues in the news.

I'd totally get behind having Cruz on the show as the only guest and having a serious discussion with Jimmy.

The blob fish stuff I figured he was well aware of, since isn't that how the whole game got started in the first place?  (I'm not a regular nightly Kimmel viewer). If he knew the trash talk would get so political and personal and not stay lighthearted, that I haven't been able to track down.

I am a so-so Jimmy Kimmel fan — he’s a good interviewer, his bits are OK but often I think he’s a little too self-impressed.  I tuned in to see this Ted Cruz basketball game.  Ted was very tolerant IMO of Jimmy’s not-at-all-comedic barbs (never once was he funny) and I do think Ted was pretty ready for the jabs.  But it was super, super low of Jimmy to be personally insulting to Ted right in front of his little girls. If someone insulted Jimmy in the same way in front of his kids (like standing right next to them at the end of the game), I guarantee Jimmy would think it was out of line.  I was really disappointed in who I thought Jimmy Kimmel was at his core which is a family guy.  I felt he was particularly ugly and not at all clever in a supposedly light environment of a basketball game.  He tried to use the forum to make political points but IMO it was a big fail.  On this particular night, to me, Ted came across as a better guy than Jimmy and I am positive that wasn’t what Jimmy wanted from this.
