Same Song, Same Artist, Different Versions

Can ya'll think of anymore?

First off, apologies... My musical tastes run more to what used to be called "soft" or "light" rock, now more likely to be categorized under "Traditional Pop Vocals", vs. a good chunk of the songs I'm seeing in the posts (though I also do like stuff outside the "Traditional Pop" genre, including some songs named here).

The Captain & Tennille did 2 different versions (& I don't mean "studio" vs. "live"--they never did a live album) of their song Gentle Stranger, on their 1st album, in 1975 (I think), then on their final "major" album in 1980. Apparently the newer version was done the way Toni Tennille always envisioned it sounding (though there wasn't an issue of "fast" vs. "slow"; it was always a "slow" song--the 2nd version was more of a redo on the arrangement... & I like it better than the original).

Also, in the 1980's, Melissa Manchester recorded her song Come in From the Rain (coincidentally also done, in the 1970's by Captain & Tennille) twice. Again, this wasn't a "live" vs. "studio" version thing; both versions were "studio" versions & Melissa has also never released a "live" album/CD... Though she has released at least 1 song that was recorded live.

In 1996, Barry Manilow recorded Never My Love on his Summer of '78 CD (covers of songs popular in 1978). In 2006, his medley of Never My Love & I Swear appeared on a bonus disc that came with his CD The Greatest Songs of the Sixties if you bought that CD from QVC.

And in 2007, Barry Manilow released a CD called The Greatest Songs of the Seventies. The 1st 12 tracks were covers of other artists' songs from the 1970's; the last 6 tracks were new, acoustic versions of songs Manilow himself made famous in the 1970's (a deluxe version of this CD included additional new acoustic versions of Manilow's 1970's hits).

I saw Hold On by Wilson Phillips mentioned under a category named something like "Music to Listen to While On Hold" (sorry if I got that name wrong). It's actually being used in a new Progressive Insurance commercial with that premise.

Carnie Wilson--1 of the Wilsons in the group--is on hold with her insurance company, trying to report an accident or something, & the hold music (which we hear) ends up being her group's song Hold On. While she's listening Progressive's spokescharacter, Flo, ends up on the scene & tells her--of course--if she had Progressive she wouldn't have to put up with being on hold because (& she lists why); &--again, of course--puns are made about the song in that situation & lyrics are spoken &/or sung.

More tunes from video games.

The entire Sims franchise has a ridiculous number of catchy tunes on the various radio stations, many of which are by well known artists, and all of which are original and have lyrics in "Simlish." Here's my list of good stuff from just The Sims 3 and a couple of its expansions:

(Expansion - radio station - song title - artist)

Supernatural - Dark Wave - "Hurricane" - MS MR

Supernatural - Dark Wave - "Kill the Light" - Lacuna Coil

Supernatural - Dark Wave - "Not Your Kind of People" - Garbage

Late Night - Electronica - "M.A.D." - Hadouken!

Late Night - Electronica - "Young Estrucians" - Ladytron

Late Night - Indie - "Juice and Sim" - The Young Punx *

Late Night - Indie - "Na Na Na" - My Chemical Romance

Late Night - Indie - "The Best You Got" - Darrell Brown

Late Night - Pop - "Mama Do" - Pixie Lott

(* The singer on "Juice and Sim" somehow manages to sing in Simlish with a Jamaican accent.)

This is The Way We Roll - M.C. Hammer

This is The Way We Roll (Oaktown Version) - M.C. Hammer

Interesting side note, in the music video, you can see in some scenes, he's dressed in a white gangster suit surrounded by his crew dressed in black.  He supposedly was 'dissing' Michael Jackson (like he did in his other video "2 Legit To Quit") by dressing like MJ did in his "Smooth Criminal" video.  Hammer considered himself "The King of Rap" and thought himself to be better than MJ.  Keep thinking that, Hammer.  We barely remember you while we continue to honor MJ.
