S01.E01: Home Is Where the Beef Is

Recommended Posts

I don't know why I was excited to see this show come back with its original cast.  Watching the first two hours (!!!) reminded me of the primary reason it annoyed me.  I think that most of these people have interesting enough stories that the show doesn't have to rely on the standard candid reality TV trope of forced confrontations and producer fed dialogue.  None of the cast are good enough actors to sell their lines anyway (though Kate comes closest).  If they really did just let the cameras roll I bet it would still be fun to watch AND be a better show.

I didn't buy Sabrina's stupid questions to the doctor about pregnancy because of both the poor acting skills and, well, the internet.  I don't buy that a woman in her 20s wouldn't seek out information about pregnancy, regardless of what poor education she may have had growing up.  I'm glad the doctor barely dignified her questions with responses. (Another reason it seemed fake to me.  IRL a doctor would have given her explanations, or at least pamphlets to read).

And Jeremiah, acting or no, continues to bug the crap out of me.  If you don't want your life discussed in front of the cameras, don't choose to be in front of these cameras.  If you don't want to be thought of as a dead beat dad, don't be a dead beat dad.  Freaking out at everyone around you to manipulate the situation is one of my least favorite traits in people.

I actually REALLY liked Kate in this episode.  You would think the rest of them, after 2 seasons, would not mumble so much anymore.

And I know it was likely producer driven, but who goes to someone's house for dinner and then tries to start crap at the dinner table?  Chapel could have waited until they were done eating, OR perhaps the could have shown up on time and hashed it out beforehand.  That was tacky tacky tacky.

I find it amazing that the show basically had to bow down to the internet sleuths who discovered that Rebecca's first child belonged to Abe.  Amazing that they're just casually throwing it out there NOW, but back in New York, Rebecca "seemed like a nice girl" to Abe and they hadn't really met before.....ROIGHT.

It was kind of depressing to see Katie Ann (I think that's her name) try to find a boyfriend. I wish they wouldn't put so much pressure on her. I couldn't help but laugh when Mary said that she doesn't see why any young man wouldn't want to date Katie Ann as she has the "Schmucker charm". Then the camera pans to Katie Ann sitting on her bed with a blank look on her face. Yep! Such charisma, such charm those Schmuckers have!

Yeah, I'm still not sure about Rebecca backstory with the daughter. Abe said that but....... Also, I saw a preview of her saying that they got close, her and Andrew, but never did the deed. Both Shmuckers are in attendance.

I would have rose the roof if someone started some shit at my Holiday Dinner. For production or not.

Mary and Katie Ann just barge into Abe & Rebecca's after they were told she just wanted some time alone and act all annoyed when Rebecca tells them she can't do this now?  They are not trying to help, they are trying to make them Amish again.  And then to just show up at Kate's in NYC?  Such pressure for Katie Ann to find a man at 19?  I cannot stand Chapel or Andrew and hope they are not part of the show.  Jeremiah seems to have mellowed a bit, LOL.  Can't wait for next week.

Sabrina is the most uninformed and depressed pregnant chick I have ever seen. What the hell is wrong with her, she seriously seems like she's drugged. Add me in with the camp that doesn't need to see more of Andrew and Chapel. They're annoying and nothing but drama-central. We already have Jeremiah for that.

Also, why did Mary comment that Rebecca can't go to the hospital to have her baby? I know some women choose midwives, but Rebecca doesn't strike me as that type.

Wasn't Chapel the one who was stirring up all the drama at dinner? Why wasn't she asked to leave? Even Jeremiah had the sense not to bring up stupid drama, but Chapel just insisted on talking about. I did not watch the season with Andrew and Chapel, but damn, from just one episode I can see that I'm not going to like them.

She totally stirred it up - and was out of line, in my view. She was a guest of the family, at Christmas dinner. My only "memories" of the witch was behind her front door as Andrew begged her to give him another chance. Wish she'd stayed behind that door. Hits a little too close to home (similar piece of trash inserted herself into our family years ago), so I'm more than biased against her behavior. Not sure I can take much more of her.
