Witch Way Now: Charmed in the Media and the Cast in Other Roles

Ughh, Brad Kern's always been an open chauvinist. He said on an old Charmed interview that it was time for JM to leave the show and "have his own career instead of being known for a chick show"...

Julian's made Brad real proud since. He went on to star in a long-running hyper-misogynist porny dung-heap, which got turned down for being too sexist by the original actor his part was written for. It was also instrumental in intensifying the sexual degradation of women on cable TV to the currently mad level where GOT and True Detective are mainstream fare and touted as oh so brilliant. Yippip- hurray! Isn't everybody just overjoyed here??

Never mind that actresses have no choice but build their whole careers on being on mens' shows cause it's the default. Thankfully that's been improving in leaps and bounds lately in large part thanks to Netflix being female-friendly and pushing everyone else to bring up their game.

A show with so much rape being so popular is very questionable to me too.

Preview of the reboot pilot: http://season-zero.com/charmed-2018-the-cw-pilot-preview-stop-charmed-reboot-movement-worth-trouble/

Some interesting points

"The family manor is right in the middle of frightening woods, not in a sunny street of San Francisco. The opening sequence leans towards the horrific genre, with jump scares, fog, crows, murder of crows even… Same goes for the end with a Ouija board in the attic, and whisperings… A totally different atmosphere that is closer to Buffy, Riverdale or American Horror Story than good ol’ Charmed."

". Finally, there’s Harry, the girls’ “devilishly handsome” advisor, refered to as a “lightwhiter” like Leo was, who adds a lot of humor and eccentricity whenever he appears. Think Eliot in The Magicians. But he’s not exactly who he says he is…"

". Last but not least, the older sister who didn’t know she had sisters until recently: Macy"

"You’re probably wondering if the Book of Shadows is still part of the story and the answer is yes. The Power of Three? Yes, of course. Are the Halliwell sisters part of the story or even referred to? Not at all."

It definitely looks like it's going to be more Season 4 of Charmed for sure. More demon mythology too. So it's got nothing S1-2 of Charmed in it and no S5-8. Maybe some S3, but mainly S4.

Other fans at another site thinks it it sounds like Charmed Season 4 (with humor) meets Supernatural and Witches of East End, and I am officially no longer interested in watching. All of those shows that he said it's more like, I don't like. I don't want it to be dark and preachy! And I don't want it to be all about battling demons and their love lifes. I've said all along that I'd only be interested if this was a show about three sisters who happen to be witches. These don't sound like they are. They sound more like three demon-hunters who happen to be related, like the second set, which I never liked as much as the first.

I'll probably do what I suggested near the beginning - follow it via other people's reviews. Then if I find I'm wrong and it truly is a reboot about three sisters who happen to be witches (and how can that be when one of them wasn't raised with the others? Even if she's actually a full sister and not half like Paige (or even if she was a half who was raised with her two sisters - if we find she *was* raised with them but left for some reason after she was an adult, but her sisters' memories of her were taken away by their mother, I could get very interested), I hope they give them a chance to bond before they can vanquish demons. But I'll bet she wasn't raised with them and they are able to use the Power of Three and vanquish a demon (and I'll bet the bad guys will be demons, not warlocks) in the pilot. *sigh*

I'm not like other fans. I don't want the reboot to be horrible so it fails. That's not fair for younger fans who never had the fun of discovering Charmed Ones who were similar to us and who don't now feel dated. But I have a huge hunch that it simply won't be for me, especially if it's preachy about feminist issues. I agree something must be done about all of these issues, but preaching to those who disagree with you never works.

The description of the magical aspects to the show, horror, fog, woods, jump scares makes me think the show is going to be closer to Grimm in its tone.

I saw that Constance Burge co-wrote last night's episode of Alan Cumming's show Instinct.

I wish that a fan could have an interview with Constance and get her thoughts about Charmed and everything that went down.

I hope they end up on Netflix.

I always hated how it's still not in widescreen and when you see it in widescreen the picture is just stretched.

Does this mean the special effects are going to be patched up? Can't imagine too many of those will hold up in HD, especially in the early seasons.

Interesting article about Rose McGowan - seems she's being accused of hypocrisy regarding the MeToo movement since one of the latest accusations is of a friend of hers.

This article isn't true now that we know that Rose and her present partner, Rain Dove, turned Argento's text messages over to the police. Her be gentle and wait for the rest of the story tweet was referring to herself and Rain.

I hadn't heard this development, thank you for sharing. I googled and found her statement on the matter, and am happy to hear she didn't hesitate to turn this evidence over to the police. I imagine it was difficult to learn this about Argento, but she did the right thing.

I'm looking at the TWoP archives and giggling at the recap episode titles that Demian gave for each episode of Season 8. "Desperate Crackmonkeys, Rebitched, The One Where Demian Loses His Mind. Again." LOL. We had so much fun back then.

Can we start a fund to get Damian to recap again? I'll chip in a few bucks. What say you Demian, can you be bribed??

I think Demian posts here from time to time.

I always think it's kind of interesting that Supernatural has always had more of a sense of fun about its fans and the show, even if large swaths of that fandom take the show so seriously. Some of our TwoP jokes have made it into the show and they named a character after Demian. Meanwhile Charmed fans, with the exclusion of reboot schism, have always had a pretty healthy sense of humor about the show, but the actors and TPTB have always been sort of absurdly serious about this silly show.

Plus, I've always thought it funny that the hellscape that was Charmed set and writers' room is what inspired Javier Grillo-Marxuach to create The Middleman.

Why was the writers' room so toxic? We know that season 3 was toxic because of the problems between Shannon and Alyssa. I have always wondered if the TPTP did  inflame their issues, people like to see women have "catfights". Personally, I have always been offended with both women for not looking at the bigger picture. They were getting paid handsome salaries that most people will never have. Suck it up, do your jobs and give the audience a good show. Was that too much to ask  from two spoiled privileged highly paid actresses?

Brad Kern and the CW executives. Kern was openly racist and sexist. He harassed the writing staff, which resulted in a lot of turn over. When writers or producers spoke up, they were often fired soon after. The CW executives wanted more skin, sexier guest stars, and fewer serialized stories, which Kern acquiesced to without doing a great job communicating that to the writing staff or the stars of the show. Kern seemed to be pretty resistant to new ideas. The writing staff rarely interacted with the actors and had no real feedback about their scripts being revised by Milano and Combs on set. Apparently, there wasn't really an on set producer to coordinate with the actors, directors, department heads, writers, and Kern. Had there been a regular producer presence there, that individual might have been able to intercede with Shannen and Alyssa before the situation became unfixable. Kern seemed to stay away from the set because he didn't want to have to deal with "those crazy bitches" which was his description of the stars of the show.

Javier Grillo Marxuach later wrote this manifesto called the "11 Laws of Showrunning" to warn new writers about the kind of shit they might experience as a junior writer on a show and a guide to new showrunners on what not to do. There's allegedly a version out there on the internet where he names names. However, Grillo Marxuach freely talks about things he's learned from many other showrunners that he's worked with; Brad Kern's name is never among them.

This is why I sort of scoff at Holly's insistence that Charmed was a feminist show. Yeah, maybe be in the beginning when Constance was still there. People lost their jobs when they chastised Kern for pestering female staffers about how good they'd be in bed. This is a show where network executives can demand more T & A, fewer serialized stories, and just generally more sex and the showrunner just rolled over. If a network executive can openly insist that the show only cast hot actresses in guest roles, insist that he be there for casting, and insisted on "walking the actresses back to their cars", then Charmed couldn't have tripped into a consistently feminist approach even through a gauntlet lined by Gloria Steinem (Christian Bale's stepmom), Eve Ensler (Dylan McDermott's stepmon), Betty Friedan, Susan B. Anthony, Alison Bechdel, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Be sure to let us know what it's like - especially if it has any extras.

I just finished watching the set. No extras, but the HD is amazing (except for the stock footage of SF) and all the original songs are intact. I hope they continue putting them out.

So even "How Soon is Now?" is back?  That's just too, too cool - and HILARIOUS that the stock footage of SF wasn't reshot. Disappointing that there are no extras - those are always my favorite parts of DVDs - but glad to hear the HD is amazing.

Any word on if they're going to replace the current Netflix versions with the HD episodes and original theme song? Don't have room in the budget right now for DVD sets, so it would be awesome if that was something that was happening.

OH!  That would be fantastic if they would!

But that's only if you take her comments to be about the actual production of the show and the culture within it. That and the show itself are two different things.

The making of it, the studio heads, Hollywood in general, no. Not very feminist at all.

But the show itself was feminist. People can't just cry out that it isn't because Alyssa Milano showed a lot of skin.

But we know this to be true because the actresses and some of the writers have talked about how this executive mandates actually made it into the show. We have recappers and media criticism that contemporaneously noted these changes. The show was feminist in the same way that some of its peers like Ally McBeal, Sex and the City, and the Spice Girls were, which is very much of its time and really kind of superficial in the long run. Additionally, it started as much more feminist and quickly devolved.

I don't think it was particularly feminist. You think it was. There are a lot of people who agree with me. There are a lot of people who agree with you. I don't believe that either one of us is going to sway the other.

They're not going to re-shoot stock footage that wasn't even originally filmed for Charmed. Even during the original airing of the show the stock footage they were using was old.

Well, I never suggested the show was 100% feminist or perfect. By merely existing it was feminist.

Again, the show itself and the system that created what was the show are two separate things.

Did it have major flaws related to and unrelated to feminist ideas; GOD yes! Does that mean the show was not feminist? No.

So.....I have a cold, having a cup of tea and watching the news til I go back to bed. News is terrible so I flip the channel and there's Charmed (I think I only find it when I'm sick😂😂). It's "Charmed Again", Paige is dancing on the roof with Shane/soon to be The Source, and holy shit!,  it's the first time I realized Shane is Jordan Bridges - Frankie from Rizzoli & Isles. Now for the rest of the episode I'm seeing Frankie undercover, loaned out to SFPD solving murders with a pretty witch, "Rizzoli & Matthews"!! Now I'm sad that won't happen! Someone please write fanfic for me! Now I'm thinking the medicine 's kicking in and I should go back to bed😂😂😂

This may have been a really old episode, but I was flipping channels yesterday and landed on Chopped (as there was nothing else on). Anyhow, it was a Halloween episode and one of the judges looked familiar but I couldn't place it as she had really short blond hair. But at one point one of the contests said how much they loved her on Charmed. Anyhow, it was Rose Mcgowan and as soon as she talked I realized it really was her.

You beat me to it. Chopped is one of my "hubby is freaking out over baseball/football/basketball/hockey/etc and I'm leaving the room" shows. This was actually the most recent episode and Rose was a guest judge.

What is this thing with original “Piper” and “Phoebe” being on an episode of Gray’s Anatomy or something?  It’s for some kind of throwback TV week. I kind of want to see that. It will probably be just some short little thing but it gave me nostalgia when they said, “We’re sisters” and “That sounds just like Mom” (paraphrased). I think they said Mom not Grams. Sniff.

Well, sorry for the double post but it's been days.  I don't know where else to post this since the Grey's Anatomy "throwback" episode that Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano were in wasn't reprising their original roles, although they were supposed to be sisters.  Is it a "spoiler" if I talk about what happened in the episode?

They were two sisters who had a third sister who had been grievously injured and was brain dead (so 3 sisters, hee hee).  Alyssa's character didn't want to pull the plug but Holly's character did.  Alyssa placed some rock crystals in the room to help their sister heal (reminiscent of a Charmed protection circle).  But then after the "third sister" died, it turned out she wasn't their sister but just a woman who had stolen their sister's purse!  So ha ha, everything was okay in the end!  (Played for comedy, like many a Charmed episode.)  Alyssa and Holly's characters were arguing constantly and this was supposed to teach them to make up with each other and their estranged third sister.

Can you tell I'm still into original Charmed even after all these years?  I just have to laugh at myself.
