Re #23: Do we know for sure that something bad happened to Danny? I know Nigel alluded to it once when complimenting Travis on a routine he had choreographed, but as far as I know, Danny is a principal dancer at the Olso Ballet in Norway. He wouldn't have that kind of job if anything was seriously wrong, would he?

ThirteenthJuror, thank you SO MUCH fpr that - so good to hear Danny talking about some of what happened to him, although I expect there's a lot more.  Who is he married to?  I thought his engagement to that David guy who runs (ran?) the online Dance magazine broke up?  I'd love to know why he didn't ride the publicity wave - trying to find stuff on him has generally been rather difficult.

Thanks,ThirteenthJuror, for providing that update.  I can now strike #23 off my list.  ;-P

Danny seems as awkward as ever with interviews and publicity.  That make me oddly happy.  And despite wanting to know how/what he is doing, I feel so much better for HIM that we don't get to know a great deal.  I feel he is a person who withers and dies under that kind of attention, and flourishes when he gets to be an ordinary guy (albeit with an extraordinary talent).

You're welcome guys. I just know there's been a lot of concerns about Danny's well-being since Nigel spoke (IMO) inappropriately about him having difficulties. You can't put that out there without people becoming concerned. I was one of them, so I was happy to see that he looks healthy and content despite whatever he may have gone through in the past that they were talking about

Love that even Buzzfeed admits to #16.

never hoped for #20 but have ongoing dreams that #21 will happen and they will produce giant, beautiful dancing babies.

I saw the Emmy noms for choreographers for SYTYCD but can't find the specific dances nominated.  If anyone can link to an article with that info, it would be much appreciated!  Thanks.

Just looked at that article. Ade had dick pics and I missed them?

The only reason I can see them bringing this show back after the poor ratings this season is for the Emmy nominations it gives the network. They really need to retool if it comes back. First suggestion is eliminating Nigel. His heavy handed influence on the show is starting to affect it, IMO

Interview (by DancePlug again) of Tanisha and Rudy - to start - but then they are joined by Ricky and Valerie.  Rudy is once again asked about Jacque and gives an answer that has the interviewer swooning -ish.  Tanisha gives heartfelt goodbye re: Marcquet and Brooklyn.

Marcquet was Ricky's roommate and did all the cooking, so now Ricky's going to be malnourished (or worse because Rudy offered to cook for him).

Given the one show per week format, this seems to be the only window open to actually get to know the contestants.  I'm thinking it is the new format (less time) that is responsible for a lot of the lack of contestant-recognition this far into the show. (JMHO)

No, the Governor's Award and the winners for costuming and animation were announced separately this week:

The TV Academy announced the juried award winners for outstanding costumes for a variety program or special and outstanding individual achievement in animation. These categories do not have nominations, and winners are voted on by a panel of specialists in the respective disciplines.

The choreography awards are part of the Creative Arts Awards Ceremony. The winners for the creative categories will be announced on August 16. The show also has a nomination for Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Series, which is part of the creative awards.

The regular Primetime Emmy Awards Ceremony is August 25. That's when we find out if SYTYCD wins for Outstanding Reality - Competition Program (and if Cat wins for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program)

The Creative Arts Emmys were given out tonight, and Tabitha and Napoloen won Best Choreography for their terrific "Puttin' on the Ritz" from last season's Top 20 show. (Also for a couple of other dances, but let's face it; it was Puttin' on the Rits)

Not surprised.  It was a great piece and the only nominated piece that didn't take place on one set stage.  Last year's winner had a piece that was set in a rotating stage, and in one of the years before Smash won over SYTYCD and DWTS nominees.

SYTYCD was one of two winners for costumes.

OUTSTANDING COSTUMES FOR A VARIETY PROGRAM OR A SPECIAL

MARINA TOYBINA, Costume Designer FOX

GRAINNE O'SULLIVAN, Costume Supervisor

So You Think You Can Dance

Episode 1008

Outstanding host went to Jane Lynch.  Live hosting doesn't get the benefit of post-production editing so it's strange that they are compared to recorded show hosting.  They are related but different things.  It's like when performance/choreography from Smash was compared to the ones from SYTYCD or DWTS.

OUTSTANDING HOST FOR A REALITY OR REALITY-COMPETITION PROGRAM

JANE LYNCH, Host NBC

So NappyTabs fun hip hop routines took home the prize?  Awesome!  I like that the angsty contemporary didn't take home a prize, and those three routines were pretty outstanding.  And congrats to Jasmine.  I know it's not her award, but she starred in two of those routines, and I think that says something about her talent.

When Cat Deeley goes on another show or gets more famous she'll get an Emmy.  I think that's kind of how it works with the Emmys for a lot of their categories.  The good thing is, once she wins one that's pretty much a guarantee to snag a few more.

The actress who is going to play Cat Woman (Junior, since she's a teen in the series) in the upcoming fall series Gotham is Camren Bicondova.  She used to be in a dance troupe in Hawaii that Mark Kanemura and Cole Horibe were in when they were younger.

DancePlug Video post show interview with Philip Chbeeb.

Annoying that it cuts off abruptly just as he gets talking about how he started in Hip Hop.  I know we have Nigel's version, but I'd like to hear it from the horses mouth (so to speak).

SYTYCD Renewed with a Few Changes

For the upcoming season, dancers who advance from auditions will be divided into two teams: stage dancers who are trained in styles like jazz, tap or ballet and street dancers who have mastered hip-hop, break dancing or animation. One dancer from each genre will be sent home each week leading up to the finale.

NEW “STAGE VS. STREET” FORMAT INTENSIFIES COMPETITION

As the auditions continue, the judges, along with each team’s All-Star Mentor, will eliminate dancers until only the Top 20 – 10 Street Dancers and 10 Stage Dancers – remain. When the competition goes “live,” the Top 20 will be challenged weekly to perform a variety of styles, working with world-renowned choreographers. One dancer from each genre will be eliminated each week leading up to the Season Finale.

Okay ... that's better than "not renewed," which was a distinct possibility last summer.

Will it move the show away from the fixation on contemporary? Maybe.

I will declare myself guardedly optimistic for now.

If you care about dance, this is turrible.  If you are about backstory and personality, this is Manna from heaven.

One thing is for certain: Jidge commentary will be horrific.  It can't be based on any real standard.  If they are harsh with the trained dancers for a misplaced limb or some such, the condescension will be glaring as they give passes to the "street" stylists where precision is not prized nearly as much.

I expect the judge commentary will be much the same as it usually is.  And I expect at least one week where they tell one group they're technically stronger but one dancer has to go anyway.

When they hit Top 20 will they be paired across party lines, so to speak?  If so...yeah, have to fast forward those judges.  That's a minefield.

I'm all for innovating to keep the show alive, but I was hoping (against reason) for something more clever than importing the mentor format that's already tired, imho.  They still have 2 hours to fill each week?  If so, I think they should've gone for a non-elimination, points-earning kinda game instead.  This is just...a replica of the Step Up movies.

I am curious to see how this impacts the gender balance.  Will they actually find more than one female street dancer?  And, y'know, let her into the Top 20?

I'm also curious to see how trained you can be and still be classified as street.

Still- I guess I'm glad it's coming back.  Auditions last year were awesome.

Yes to all of this, especially the bolded. Where will the draw the line on training? And how fuzzy will that line be? I'm expecting it to be pretty damn fuzzy.

I've had a day to think about the changes and I'm still not sure if its for the better. Joshua & Russell are my favorite winners and tptb gave them the 'Untrained' label when anyone with eyes could see that wasn't the case. I expect more of the same for some of the street dancers.

I hope the new format stops the judges from giving contemporary dancers praise for lackluster basic hip hop routines! Just because they learned the steps isn't enough! *I've always wished they'd make auditioners dance to hip hop music like they were at a party to see who can groove. :)

What are the odds Twitch and Allison don't show up as mentors? I want the show to expand beyond their regular favorites and I hope to see a legit hip hop judge added to the table.

I think the idea is terrible but I guess it's better than the show not getting renewed.  The reason why I think it's bad is because I like to see a balance of different specialties.  I do agree that the show had way too many contemporary dancers and dances.  But now, it's going to have too many street dancers.  I didn't see ballroom listed but I assume they would be in the trained category.  So all the contemporary, jazz, tap, ballet, ballroom dancers would have to fit in one category.

The only bright spot is that Jaja has a really good chance of making it this summer.

I wonder about the ballroom dancers as well?  They put less and less importance on ballroom.  If someone has focused in ballroom, they will have trouble with the other trained dances and the street dances.  They should break it out in 8 studio, 6 ballroom and 6 street.  Also, they should use the mentors throughout the season, not just for auditions.
