I just have to share this. I was in the ER once with my 94-year-old grandmother. A resident walked in to help us, buck naked, and proceeded to examine my grandmother. After a very long minute, a nurse came running in and said, "Doctor, you need to stop and go put on some clothes." The resident looked down at himself and appeared truly shocked that he had no clothes on. He walked out and the nurse said, "I apologize, he has been up for 36 hours.

Enough said.

...oh, my god.

Wow. Yeah. If that doesn't convince people regarding that issue, I don't know what will. Poor guy.

I am starting to get a bit of a shipping vibe from Shaun and Morgan.  I noticed that her apprearance has changed with longer hair and more makeup but she appears to be taking a bit more of an interest in Shaun this season. I could be wrong but I have good shipping radar.

I feel the same way about Claire and Melendez

Lim was out of line and wasting the court’s time. She should have taken the day off and had her phone off while in court. Courts are overburdened and expecting it to wait because she didn’t want to look bad to Andrews while a promotion is on the line is wrong. No one else should be pushed later into the day, even by five minutes, because Lim wouldn’t request a day off.

Also, she was warned clearly to stop fighting with the judge. She ignored that and was held in contempt. And then the judge had her released rather than let the contempt charge stand.

I thought it was incredibly unprofessional and irresponsible of her to slink out of the office and leave things in the hands of two residents after both telling them to call and discouraging them from calling her with issues. That she is an ER doc and rides a motorcycle at 100 mph, sasses judges and hooks up with opposing counsel, all made me roll my eyes. She said she's hoping for a promotion -- after the poor judgment she showed, I can't see any way that she deserves one.

I liked the character last year and thought she was a good role model for Claire, but no more.

When Claire was sent out to talk to the patient, I was shaking my head. I said they are sending her out because "she's good at that." My husband was all, what's wrong with that? I had to explain to him it doesn't matter that she's good at it (and why is she so much better?), it's that it's the job no one wants to do, and they make her do it because she's a woman. I thought it was cool at the end when Melendez said he'd go talk to the patient and she could oversee the closing up of the surgery.

I also thought it was really cool that Claire insisted on making the decision (is that even a thing, that a doc can say, "the patient's spouse told me it's my decision") and that she took a long moment to make the call. Stepping back from the drama, I couldn't see that they would risk her life over retaining her ability to deliver a baby later -- I thought that sounded weird even in the previews. It was a bit of a slap in the face to all the people who become parents in numerous other ways.

Have to address the point that House was always obnoxious -- yes, but he made up for it in myriad ways that tempered his behavior, at least for this fan.

Claire's assertiveness plot reminds me of a similar story-line ER did with Susan Lewis.  I recall an episode where Susan was told she tended to back down when she went up against Drs. Benton and Kayson. The scenes in the OR were well acted verbally and non-verbally.

@juno please take this as me being a fan of this show and Shaun specifically: I hope you are VERY wrong.

LOL, I hope so too. I hate the constant shipping on shows. A show as good as this doesn't need shipping (fingers crossed)

I don't get the part about the Hysterectomy. As far as I could tell, whatever needed to be taken out wasn't immediatly life threatening. Also the operation went on for way too long anyway. Wouldn't the logical, ethical and responsible thing to do have been to close her up, wake her up, ask her what she wants and do the operaten in a few weeks?

I mean, in the middle of the surgery might not be the best time to bring up gender issues in the work place, but they weren't wrong about how men tell woman to be more assertive, then get annoyed by it and tell them how mean they're being.

As a big burly man I had similar experiences. People tell you to be more assertive, but if you don't actually have the confidence to back it up, it comes off as bitchy and people hate you for it. So being assertive is crappy advice. The key is to actually not give a fuck what people think, speak your mind and do your thing. That people respect. (still haven't quite figured that one out either, though)

I think more women than men have a problem with that, in general. If it's biology or socialisation or a combination of both can probably be hotly debated for the ages.

I thought that was her lawyer.

Huh, perhaps. I thought he was with the district attorney's office and was arguing against her and that she was representing herself. I thought he started feeling attracted to her and so advised her to appeal later, but she kept going until she was held in contempt. At least that was my take, could be wrong.

Since you brought it up, heh-heh:

Last season, there seemed to be some subtle flirting between Claire and Melendez, which was kinda hot—or annoying, depending on your perspective. A relationship between a resident and an attending would be totally inappropriate, of course.

But I haven’t seen any of that this season. So was the flirting a figment of my imagination?

Forreal, you are correct. He was with the prosecutor's office, that's why he was standing on the opposite side of the courtroom to her. She was representing herself in court.

I really really really could have done without the penis needle....in fact I had to fast forward through those scenes.

Shaun had a great shudder at one point, in reaction to them discussing the options and how many times they might have to insert something into the poor guy's penis.

I loved a lot of the little reactions throughout this episode, the doctors and nurses in the surgery (via their eyes), and Shaun's bouncy joy in the beginning of the episode, and his getting in poor Glassman's face when he was trying to rest, the pauses everyone took before finally speaking respectfully about one another in the meeting with Andrews... all of it was really good.

There was a joke involving Shaun that really cracked me up, but I can't think of it at the moment. It wasn't him saying 'they're not talking about me' in regard to the erection. It was something else involving that patient, though, I think... it's going to bug me! Whatever it was, I laughed out loud. He had a few things that made me laugh in this episode. I really like what Freddie Highmore does with the role.

I can't imagine even doing something I really like for 36 hours straight without sleep.

I've pulled a few rare all-nighters when working on projects (in fact, did it just a few months ago, and I am definitely not in my 20's anymore, LOL), and that's usually only been about 28 hours. I can safely say 36 would be insane. I'm usually good through the night (I tend to be a night owl anyway), and hit a second wind around 5am that keeps me focused and going strong, but by 7:30 or 8am I can feel my brain slooooowing down, and by 9:30 or 10am I've found that I feel an incredible urge to scream, because I need to lie down so desperately. I physically cannot go any longer. My brain is screaming at me to go to sleep. At that point, there isn't any good thought pattern going on. My choices would be awful.

Honestly, I don't understand why people in the medical field would want their doctors to stay up that long. Just because they can push themselves doesn't mean they should. Do they really want to risk impaired judgment resulting in mistakes that can cause permanent injury or even death?

I remember a whole kerfuffle about this in my neck of the woods about 1 or 2 years ago. I looked it up and residents went to court to protest 24 hour shifts. They won and now shifts are limited to 16 hours. I definitely would not want a doctor to see me on hour 35 of his their shift.

FIxed it for you. ?

I teach high school and there are way too many days when I forget the smallest things, no matter how organized I am or how many times per day I teach the same lesson. I'm desperate for a nap usually about halfway through my last class as well! We joke as teachers that we feel "sorry for" the first and last classes of the day. No way can anyone help another person during a sleepless 36 hours, let alone operate on them or make an on-the-spot decision in the OR if something unexpected happens.

Like surgeons, we have really early starting times (6:30-6:45am) and we also can't step away from students to use the bathroom either. I also have to be razor sharp at 7am and I am NOT saving lives or performing surgery, but teaching is damn exhausting - if you are doing it correctly.

I wouldn't want to see any physician or therapist unless they're at 100 percent. I don't even like to interact with the pharmacy staff when they're finishing up a 10 hour shift because they're usually cranky - and their jobs are damn important too.

I do know that most surgeons go to great lengths for dictation and scribe services to make sure patient records are updated ASAP. However, I can see how different shifts and those potential overlaps for doctors.and nurses could be problematic, especially with data and lab results.

Heh, I remember getting sleepy on occasion in some of my classes when I was in school, and I always felt bad doing so, because I was afraid my teachers would take that as a sign they were boring me. But it wasn't that-rather, it was because I didn't get enough sleep the night before, or the room was warm and stuffy and that made me sleepy, or whatever.

So it's oddly good to be reminded that teachers can feel the urge to want to nap during the school day, too :p. And like you rightly note, you have plenty of reason to feel that way.
