While I absolutely agree that third and fourth stringer is not very common, I was loudly using that terminology as player after player, that I've never heard of, came up to bat.

LMAO!!! I specialize in the minor leagues so those are my very favorite players! (All hail Daniel Poncedeleon!)

It is very weird. They supposedly wrote her out because "they had run out of stories to tell about her", except that they're now kinda continuing her story through Jackson. And if the intention was to clear the path for Jaggie, all those mentions of April and her presence lingering around throughout the season premiere isn't exactly going to help that cause. So, I'm really not sure where they're going with all this.

Yeah, seems like this would have been a perfect story to write for her! And with Alex stepping up into the Chief role we would have seen more of Arizona on baby cases which could have had some stories for her.

But that's cool, whatever, totally excited for McAverage and McSuperfluous to be the hottest things and get storylines with all the interns whose names I can't remember! </sarcasm>

I can't believe KV came up with a bullshit excuse to write Arizona and April out when we have two wonderful plots happening this season without them; but yet she contradicts that bullshit excuse not only with that, but by bringing in two creeps who are not all that attractive and seem to think with something in between their legs. I hope they get crushed by a semi or plane a la Derek and Lexie.

I'm expecting Teddy to end up having delivery issues at the hospital, which will be addressed via use of the amazing Arizona crash cart system.

Well, we all know the odds of her having a healthy, uncomplicated delivery in this hospital are astronomically small, so...

Dr. Gorgeous Hair was the team surgeon for the Seattle Mariners. So WHY OH WHY is the lone sports reference he uses (I can't recall if he said third-fourth stringer) a football and/or basketball analogy, not a baseball analogy?

Because the writers of Greys Anatomy have an understanding of the difference between those that is on the level of that Garfunkle and Oates song Sports Go Sports?

another throw back to last season--when Bailey first hears about  the guy with the hairspray can inside of him, I honestly expected her to say "use my colonscopy device thing" from last season to at least figure out what it was. Opportunity missed.

Meredith - you have kids. Three of them. You really do not need someone so desperately. Go hang around with them in your free time, geez

I don't want Owen-Amelia-Teddy triangle all over again. I wonder how the baby thing will affect their relationship

Apparently she doesn't have free time, because after her shift is over she's doing surgery in the evening. Like, what? That's ridiculous. It's sad that TPTB have forgotten or purposely ignoring the whole board members storyline because isn't Meredith also the head of general surgery in addition to being a board member? She would have no personal life, especially not when Maggie, Amelia and Alex aren't around either to help out with her kids.

Her blood clot foreshadows some dramatic health complication that necessitates lots of doctor visits? And we all know the only place to get medical attention in Seattle is at this hospital. There are no other hospitals or private practice doctors or clinics anywhere in the area.

Way to downplay Teddy’s bloodclot, seemed to me like an obvious set-up for her to return with more pregnancy related complications. Hope she’s not getting on a plane, she should be smarter than that. Chuckling at the idea of her hiding out in a hotel room until it’s time to have her appear on the show again.

My guess would be that they're going to kill off Teddy, probably during a dramatic delivery (and maybe Arizona's car will be used to no avail or TPTB are ignoring that as well) and the (premature?) baby will be raised by Owen and Amelia and their stray foster (grand)kids.

I did like Deluca sister when she was being a doctor and matter of factly stating about why men shove things up their anus. And of course the male doctors wince and cringe. Grow up men!

Very immature for doctors. I nearly gave myself a whiplash when Owen told Carina he needed her there to explain the situation to the patient's wife. Um, what? This very experienced surgeon doesn't know how to talk to the patient's wife about such an awkward situation? Also, I don't know if it was just to be "funny" or if the subject of sex/sexual pleasure is that repressed or such a taboo in the US but how could those doctors be surprised by what Carina told them? I should hope they have actual knowledge of human anatomy considering they're, you know, surgeons who operate on people.

And if Owen really feared the patient's wife would have a mental breakdown or whatever upon learning about her husband's sexual adventures, then he probably should have asked someone from psych or gotten a flyer with contact information or something on it for professional help. Not asking an OBGYN who specializes in (female?) orgasms to do his job for him.

Since TPTB have apparently decided Carina gets to stay for another season, I sure hope they'll  have some actual and interesting work related to her specialism for her to do rather than be comic relief or be the live sex toy for other main characters.

Out of all the guys they threw at Meredith in the premiere, she had the best chemistry with Koracick.

Yes, I actually kinda like them together! And with what little we've heard of his backstory I think they might be good for each other, too.

That I agree with. And while watching last night I kept trying to tell if we were actually seeing a mutual attraction from Glasses or if they were trying to just show him nervous/uncomfortable from the attention. I don't follow spoilers for this show so I don't know if the path they have planned for Glasses is actually for him to all of a sudden be gay/bi, but I agree it's cheap if they do go there.

I don't know if it's the writing, directing and/or acting but all I got from those awful scenes was Glasses being surprised at first and somewhat pleased just because someone apparently found him attractive. And a good-looking someone. A man, but hey, if he thinks Glasses is attractive maybe Glasses should just go with it.

Very poorly done.

Regarding Alex as the new interim chief, I thought the point was that Bailey had picked a "fourth-stringer," as directed.  Not that Alex is irresponsible, but just that Bailey would be welcomed back when she chose to return, more than if she'd appointed Richard.

Setting up for Alex to be the Best Chief Ever and make everyone wonder if Bailey should come back to the position when her "stress sabbatical" (whatever that means; I know she explained it last season but I tend to tune out her monologuing) is done.

Is this the most unprofessional hospital crew on TV? New docs have been there for five minutes, Meredith hasn't even told Dr. "Link" her name and he's asking her to get drinks (never mind that as a board member/part owner, you'd think she'd have been at least somewhat involved in hiring him), and we haven't even actually been introduced to the other new guy and he's hitting on an intern (resident? I don't even know where they're at with the timelines on this show) at the doctors' hangout bar. I know they were publicizing "first gay male doctor character" but I'm going to be very annoyed if the main focus of his character is that he's gay. Also, if I were an ER patient and my doctors were having a conversation about their drunken kiss the night before right in front of me, I'd be asking for a different doctor.

And that just goes to show what a horrible chief Bailey is. She could have picked any of the other surgeons/heads of departments to be interim chief and she goes with the least qualified person because her ego couldn't handle it if people weren't begging for her to come back? So unprofessional.

This interim chief thing better be the making of Alex, or there won't be a hospital/surgical wing for Bailey to return to by the time she's done "relaxing".

And yes, they are the least professional hospital crew ever and have been for about ten seasons if not longer. It's just becoming more and more obvious with every new season, as if they just don't care about at least keeping up pretense.

Do we know what Hot Asian's "status" is? Like is he an attending (he did wear dark blue scrubs...), a resident, intern...? Because his standing would definitely affect the perception of him going after the intern (resident?).

Yes she was.

I actually had to look up in which season Samuel died and when Maggie showed up because she's left that little of an impression on me that I also thought she hadn't been around during that time. Thought there was a good chance she didn't even know about Samuel. But she'd already been there for a whole season!

Anyway, long story short; I wasn't impressed with this premiere. I did like CeCe though, first time in a long time I actually felt sad for a patient.

I googled trying to find out what his specialty was and what little I found seemed to suggest he's in the same position as the other new guy (I feel like this show actually would give them the title of "Ortho God"). Granted, I didn't look that hard.

Bailey admittedly picking a "fourth stringer" just makes her look bad. It makes her sound like she doesn't actually care if whoever sits in her office does a decent job of running the place while she's gone. Someone who cares about their job would want a capable and trustworthy person in that temporary role. It makes the person who chose them look better and it means less chance of her stepping back into a huge mess when she returns. (And now back to Grey's reality instead of real reality.)

My initial assumption based on their dynamic was that Hot Asian Doc is an ortho fellow.  He clearly looked up to and took direction from Linc (or Link?), but he also seemed very much superior in the hierarchy compared with Glasses. Since Bailey didn't brag about hiring two ortho attendings, I'm going to assume for now that "HAOG" has completed residency and is doing some fellowship under "Ortho God." (If this is the case, they may have held off identifying him as such to not detract from Jo's storyline of creating a  research fellowship out of the blue.)

Glasses, Qadri, et. al. should all now be second-year residents, since Jo was clearly depicted as having completed the program at long last. DeLuca is a third-year.

I enjoyed Alex & Meredith's scene, though I agree that it's ridiculous to think that Bailey could just surprise Meredith with the decision, given that she is a board member and part-owner of the hospital.

After April's name was mentioned several times in both episodes, I was sad Arizona was only vaguely referred to once when DeLuca teased his sister about being single. Though why they feel that Carina has more potential for a storyline this season than either April or Arizona is way beyond me at this point!

The board story is gone. Dead. They want us to forget about it. Like the DeLucca beating story. Erased forever.

Also isn't Catherine poor now? Or should we forget about that too?

Maggie was one of the doctors discussing what to do for Japril on the day Samuel was born and died (I think it was Maggie, Alex, Jo, Callie, Owen and Amelia... Everyone but Meredith) so she 100% knew all about their loss.

Then April gave birth to Jackson's second baby on Maggie's kitchen table, but Maggie's never acknowledged that either.

So weird.

I wonder if we'll ever see Harriet again or if she'll just live off screen with the occasional comment about daycare or whatever.

I must have missed something then (likely) because I assumed she named Alex because if he didn't have a job, Wilson wouldn't stay. They were a package deal. (Sorry, I know she's not Wilson anymore ... even the cast list says "Jo Karev" ... but to me she's Wilson)

If she does make an appearance, perhaps Maggie could do more than just say "hi" and wave  to the kid. Such an odd reaction to your partner's child...

Unless I missed something, it didn't sound like they had actually replaced him yet. If that's the case she could have just given him his job back.
