That, in my opinion, is not true at all. Every season is connected. It's a complex story. Like how Pepper was institutionalized at Briarcliff, but then rescued by Elsa Mars. Or how Queenie from Coven won a spot on a game show and was fed on by a vampire at the Hotel Cortez. It's essentially a cinematic universe in the making. The fact that it can be random at times doesn't really help in understanding that universe one hundred percent, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't 'cohesive story-telling'.

For some reason, however, I ended up rewatching the show in December of 2017. From start to finish. I absolutely loved it. I even started to download the songs from the show, and I even have an American Horror Story playlist that I listen to every so often (i.e. Life On Mars, Tonight You Belong To Me, Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft, etc.) While I am a fan of the show, I will say that some seasons are better than others, and some actors are more appreciated by me than others. For instance, I really only didn't like Cult or Roanoke or Hotel. But I mainly don't like those seasons because Jessica isn't in them. I did watch them, on the other hand, because Finn was in some of them and Evan was in all of them. 

 

That's just my input on all of these thoughts and concerns, though, so feel free to skip right on over me.

Just because something is campy doesn’t mean it’s not cohesive just like just because something is gritty doesn’t mean it is cohesive.  

In all honesty this and The Purge are my two favorite shows at the moment.  That might change as the fall season progresses but Mayans is just too....something and I’ve gotten really bored  of Better Call Saul.  

AHS may not always have the most tightly written story but I always look forward to it.

That wasn't this episode, but maybe the warning is for the entire series or for all the series collectively.

So, Evan Peters actually fucking Evan Peters? If thats not peak Ryan Murphy, I dont know what is. 

So, the rubberman returns, and is it weird it makes me feel a bit nostalgic? Like, awwww, back to where it all began. Good episode, I am still super confused, but in a good way. Much like other seasons that started out well, and then just turned into random weirdness. So, hopefully, they can stick the landing this year? I am starting to wonder if the world outside is as bad as they think it is. Or maybe they actually all died, and this is some weird level of hell? Something else is clearly going on, especially with anti christ Lucious Malfoy running about the place. 

I felt bad for Evan Peters character. He risked his life to save his grandma, and she was willing to turn him in to die just to save her own hide. What an asshole. I am loving Joan Collins though, and am super excited to see where she pops up next? Maybe if this is connected to Murder House, we will get to see her ghost?

The kid who plays Timothy looks so familiar but he hasn't been in anything else I've seen according to his IMDB page. Finally figured out, he looks like a young Joseph Gordon Levitt. 

The snakes coming back to life in the soup bowls, in addition to the Rubber Man confusion, makes me think they're all actually dead and in hell.

I watched the second, one-minute-shorter, showing and noticed it didn't have a nudity warning at the beginning. If the first showing had one, the scene was probably an expendable blink-and-you'll-miss-it.

I loved the line "We have four Chrises that could star in a movie. How many do YOU have?" What a bizarre line.

What was the third name Evan Peters yelled when being whipped? I couldn't make out what he said.

That's certainly true, but the show has increasingly relied on visuals and elements that are not practical and don't make much sense simply because they are arresting and provocative. Like the way Sarah Paulson and Kathy Bates are dressed up like they're in a Victorian steam punk graphic novel. There's no reason for it, other than Ryan Murphy thinks it looks cool. Same with all the candles and the lack of food despite obvious financial means and plenty of time to plan. It's all very atmospheric but does it make sense? No. 

Mind you, I'm still entertained by it. I just think Murphy blew his wad on Asylum, which had enough ideas to fill several seasons, and ever since he's been hit or miss and phoning a lot of it in, relying on gimmicks, formula and camp.

I've looked forward to this show before, and I actually liked most of last year - I always like a part of it, but then it goes off the rails, and I wonder why I watch every year. This year, I'm just not into it.

I can't believe it's been seven years. I was getting nostalgic earlier, and am feeling it again now. I loved the pilot so much, I watched it online first, because I'd missed the premiere - watched it just before I went to a pumpkin patch, with my family - and then recorded the repeat. I was also thinking about Heart of Dixie, and Homeland. I loved all of them.

Cylon I'm sure. because Murphy loves his references and it reminded me very much of the white robot blood in the Alien movies.

Ok, so I'm confused.  Lending credence to the the bunker is built on the site of Murder House theory, when Evan Peters was getting fucked was that Tate in the rubber suit?  Because it obviously wasn't Joan Collins then as she was out in the hall.  Nor was it Michael spying on LimpDick and JaneError when they were using the laptop as he just left the room.  But, if it was Tate, how/when did Joan Collins get the suit?

Good questions. Tate in the rubber suit f*cking hair dresser Well many of us wanted to see more, and we did.

I think I'm not alone in finding Langdon mesmerising. That actor has it.

I was wondering if I had missed something with the Victorian garb.  Like why would anyone  stockpiling for the future after nuclear war pick those clothes?

Pepper was rescued by Elsa from an orphanage. She was institutionalized at Briarcliff after Elsa dumped her at her sister's and the sister framed her for murdering the baby, and then later died at Briarcliff. I just couldn't not correct this. 

I think my problem so far is that we're getting a lot of weird shit thrown at the wall and I don't like any of the characters enough to care whether any of them live or die. I also just can't buy the premise of really rich people buying their way into a survival bunker and meekly donning Victorian attire, living in candlelight and not protesting the same song being played over and over. Or rather, if all the survivors are such imbeciles that they submit like whipped bitches to this treatment, then I guess I am not bothered if they all die. I'm also disconnected from the plot because of the factual idiocy of no food but nutrition cubes, and high vaulted ceilings with bedrooms stocked with Victorian costumes but... NOT ENOUGH FOOD.

I'm probably a rarity in that Murder House was not my favorite season and the rubber suit thing didn't do much for me then. I don't think they can be built on the grounds of the Murder House because I am pretty darn certain the house was Los Angeles which was wiped out and how could a bomb shelter built like an old boys school be built in a historical home area of los angeles?

Don't get me going on the candles versus the air system.

I am "eh" so far on this one. But that might be because of the aesthetics. It's beautifully created/curated but just not my thing. I know that shouldn't be an issue but it is. I preferred Hotel and Coven (though not the house so much in Coven, but the bayou!) as far as look/feel. Also, not the biggest fan of dystopias, but hoping the story transcends the genre in this case.

Isn't he also on the final season of House of Cards? That's a pretty prestigious project with no connection to Murphy, hopefully it will result in lots of options for him.

I suppose it makes more sense for the near future that a former military officer might have some replacement mechanical parts from an injury, rather than be a completely artificial sentient android/AI. (Look at me, watching this show and vainly hoping for plot twists to make sense!) Though when I saw that milky goop I immediately thought of Ian Holm's character from Alien and how he went crazy/murderous on an isolated crew.

I'm not liking this season at all so far.  It's just bizarro rather than scary, which would be okay if it was interesting (like Hotel was bizarro but interesting) but it's not.  And the only likeable characters are (maybe?) the young couple, I don't care what happens to the rest of them.  The whole thing so far is like a very bad porn fetish video.

I haven't watched the Mayans yet, I have too many shows I'm following.  I did watch all of Sons of Anarchy.  Funny you are bored with Saul, I am really enjoying this season and still consider it one of the best written shows on television with the most well-developed characters.  I have watched the Purge only because my wife watches it.  It's not terrible but what I've seen so far it isn't all that great.  I don't know how sustainable this story is as a series, I think it works better as a movie.

He is, but he got that before ACS Versace ended. In fact, I think he got HOC after his first episode of ACS aired. His career literally exploded overnight. I get this feeling that Murphy is like the Godfather - once he launches your career, you don't refuse him. Evan Peters is immensely talented, too, but we never see him in anything besides Murphy's projects, and as a result I don't think people take him seriously. I don't want to see that happen to Fern, because not only is he talented, he's pushing boundaries as far as gender stereotypes go. I don't want him to end up always playing a role that makes his sexuality a big part of the character, if that makes sense.

I like the camp. I re-watched the first three seasons with my non horror fan husband. I didn't encourage him to watch past Coven. Roanoake was a bit too much for me, and I skipped Cult completely. I happen to find things like Stu Stew amusing. Goth Kathy Bates is good too.

Well he's Quicksilver in the X-Men films, so he isn't "entirely" owned by Ryan Murphy.  But I've always believed that if you are an actor who lands a long-running gig like AHS, you might as well milk it for all it's worth.  Plus with this show he gets to play a new character every season so it's always something different and he doesn't run the risk of Mr. Spock typecasting.

I think you’ve made some great points that I think and you were able to put into words. And I’m with you- I’m not invested nor care if any live or die (though the lovers could die for boredom reasons anytime). 

With that said, I watched Murder House and Asylum while they aired and was so in. I have watched anywhere from 2 to 4 episodes of all other seasons due to complete disinterest. This season I’m finally  back in again....for now.

I love Leslie Grossman (oh Popular how I miss you!) but am not loving her character. Give these people some dimension. Spoiled brat is one of the easiest and dullest characters. 

Michael is a compelling enough character to keep me interested.  It would be easy for the actor to be over the top but thus far he is playing that part perfectly. 

Why are none of them gaunt or super thin? Are the cubes magical and have exact calorie allotment no matter your gender, size or height to maintain your weight?  Gah, even typing nutritional cubes is boring. 

Rubberman makes me feel claustrophobic and I always get out of the scene and think about the actor in the costume and wonder if it’s really hot. However I do like that character and always kind of have  

Speaking of- damn Evan Peters is hot. 

Sarah Paulson hit the lottery with RM treating near muse like. I don’t see it but I also work in a cubicle doing insurance and he’s a zillionaire so what the hell do I know. What I’d do know is there is power in numbers and I’d not be afraid at all to take her on. She’s not scary or intimidating and not that great at delivering lines. Like if I ended up there and wanted to escape I’d get the gang together and take her out and then we’d really have to get a plan together for Bates. She’s the real deal.

I really want everyone to live just long enough to pack up their corsets and candelabras and get to the sanctuary, only to see all the other survivors dressed in yoga pants and hoodies. Maybe Michael wandering around in a pair of Uggs.

Maybe that's the intention, lol! Of course, if that's the case and they are all inconsequential and expendable, it really lends credence to the notion that RM has completely lost the plot when it comes to crafting a well reasoned narrative.

The problem with Em & Tim is that they aren't really integrated with the rest of the "guests". They've been there 18 months but it's like they and the others are still complete strangers to one another. I don't expect them to all be best buds but there should a greater amount of interaction.

I don't get why there isn't any food. With all the money that was put into this (Vanderbilt says $100 million a ticket) why wouldn't they have already put food down there? Canned goods, ramen, water, dried foods, powdered soups, vitamin supplements...maybe alcohol. They make sure that all the characters have an extensive wardrobe but don't make sure to have any food? There should be some basic medicine and first aid available too. 

At least there's a library. I wonder how many books they have. I actually found myself hoping that the collection was sizable. It seems like they aren't doing all that much to pass the time. With all of the wardrobe options they have, they should put on plays for fun. 

I don't get why there's no variety to the music either. They could have gone old school with a bunch of records and maybe even an instrument or two. They certainly have the space. They could have had a couple of greys who earned their spots by being professional musicians or nurses or chefs, whatever--people with skills. All of the outposts should really have allowed room for a doctor a nurse, maybe some kind of psychologist to help people deal with the ongoing trauma of being in an apocalyptic situation. Maybe a yoga instructor or a personal trainer to help keep people active. 

Yes, I've given this way too much thought. ;)

I was thinking of you while I read the posts upthread by several people who share the Hotel love!  

One of the reasons Hotel is tops on my list is that I'm a sucker for costuming and set decoration, so the Victorian/Steampunk/Versailles vibe is just fine with me.

Dinah and Coco are probably close to the same age, but the difference is that Coco wants to be a millennial so bad that she's actually convinced herself that she is one.  She is for sure one of the older generation that ran the youngsters out of MySpace, then Facebook, then Twitter, and now she's attempting to infiltrate Instagram.  Watch out, Snapchat!  The only things left after the end of the world will be cockroaches and social media.  And maybe knotty pine.

I'm still under the impression that the Sanctuary will be in New Orleans, so we need to get Gallant, Mead, Paulson and a few others bumped off so their Coven and Murder House characters can get onscreen without all of the Patty/Cathy shenanigans.  Where the two biggest questions (for me) will be 1.  Is Joan Collins Fiona's mother?  and 2.  Will there be a Myrtle Snow appearance?

Dinah and Coco are probably close to the same age, but the difference is that Coco wants to be a millennial so bad that she's actually convinced herself that she is one.  She is for sure one of the older generation that ran the youngsters out of MySpace, then Facebook, then Twitter, and now she's attempting to infiltrate Instagram.  Watch out, Snapchat!  The only things left after the end of the world will be cockroaches and social media.  And maybe knotty pine.

I'm still under the impression that the Sanctuary will be in New Orleans, so we need to get Gallant, Mead, Paulson and a few others bumped off so their Coven and Murder House characters can get onscreen without all of the Patty/Cathy shenanigans.  Where the two biggest questions (for me) will be 1.  Is Joan Collins Fiona's mother?  and 2.  Will there be a Myrtle Snow appearance? 

Oh, I so want to see Myrtle.

  • Evan Peters had me at Hello, but he may have to move over and give Cody Fern some space. Those are 2 hot guys. I think Cody is little bit more of a pretty boy, which believe it or not, sometimes turns me off. But for some strange reason, not this time. The red around his eyes is a mystery, maybe he got too close to those burning flames in Hell and got a bad burn.  Or perhaps it's a radiation burn.

Sorry to see Joan Collins go so soon, but not her character. Talk about a grandma from hell. I felt so sorry for Mr. Gallant when Granny dearest was demeaning him in front of everybody, telling him his life was worthless.  Granny deserved what she got. Good job, Mr. Gallant!!!

Lol, if I did that it would probably drive me nuts! I find with AHS, the best course of action is complete and utter suspension of disbelief. My only thought is that they didn't understock the food provisions or anything else that's lacking, there has to be some reason for treating them the way they are. Whether it's Venables just fucking with them or the Collective is grooming them for something, I'm just going to watch and wait for it to be revealed......or not, hahaha!

A case could have been made that what Gallant was up to with Rubber Man didn't technically violate Veneble's rules. She told Em & Tim that there was to be no unauthorized copulation. That wouldn't rule out any and all sexual activity up to that point.

I'm getting the idea that the Cooperative never intended to create a serious civilizational lifeboat for humanity with these outposts - assuming there were more than one in the first place. All the info we are getting about them and their plans is second-hand and/or from unreliable individuals.

I just realized today, watching this episode, that the tall woman guard is the same actress that played Amazon Eve in Freak Show. I had heard that she was in this season, but I didn't recognize her. Maybe it's me, but the scenes are often very dark & it's hard to see details. I get that it's suppose to be that way because of the candlelight, but I wish it wasn't. I agree with those who've said that, for as much money as they were suppose to have to put into this project, they could have had some battery power and LED lights ( and some decent food !) I think there must be a reason for the lack of these things- otherwise it just doesn't make sense.

 

I'm not loving this season so far, but I'll watch it all-- with just 10 episodes it seems silly to bail. It could turn out to be great.

I think they're intentionally trying to make Michael androgynous, in the vein of David Bowie, to make the character more intriguing. I'm getting the sense that they wrote this role specifically for Cody Fern.

Fern showed up to the FX Emmy Party wearing that red eye shadow

They claimed that they were choosing to go without technology, so by a strict definition, that would mean no LED lights (but food cubes are OK??). They could have filled the place with bioluminescent creatures; nothing hi-tech about glowing plankton or mushrooms (and it'd more food in a pinch). So far, this season feels like they're ripping off an old sci-fi story from back when an audience wouldn't have been so savvy.

That would make sense, since they seem to have spices, vegetables and potatoes available whenever they get a fresh source of protein like Stu or the snakes.  If they only had the nutritional cubes, then it would have been very obvious that they were chowing down on steaks of Stu,

I agree. I don't know what to think of this season so far. I would hate to give Ryan Murphy even more time to go off the rails, but I kind of feel like 10 episodes isn't enough for everything he has going on and it all just feels rushed and unexplained. I still enjoy the total crazy of this show, but so much doesn't make sense, and I don't have a lot of faith that all will be explained in a coherent way. Random Victorian clothes, who started the war, a cylon(?), monsters in the trees, hallucinations, the antichrist, WHY DID HE KILL BILLY EICHNER SO EARLY, etc.

That being said, Cody Fern has amazing presence on this show. I had never heard of him, but he's making things way more interesting.

If you watched ACS Versace, you knew the within the first five minutes of his first episode that Cody Fern was going to blow up. Every review and recap of his first episode made mention of how relevatory his performance was. While I think this season is going to fall short as per usual, I think Fern will captivate viewers enough to keep them tuning in and save the season from going the way of Roanoke. Paulson is getting long in the tooth and Peters can only carry so much of the series. New additions for the past couple of years have been lack luster. Leslie Grossman delivers snark well but can't seem to do anything else. Eichner, IMHO, holds promise and thankfully will be back this season. And maybe I'm alone in this but I think Adina Porter's acting is wooden and without range. jeffrey Chapman is being wasted in this role. Timothy and Emily can go and never return. This show was great when the cast was across the board fantastic. Conroy, Lange, Britton, James Cromwell, Peters, Zachary Quinto, Denis O'Hare, Paulson, Angela Bassett and now Cody Fern. Switch in Matt Bomer, Kate Mara and Finn Witrock and Jeffrey Chapman every few episodes and that might breathe new life into the series.
