cherbitrary September 5, 2018 Share September 5, 2018 (edited) I got that Christian's preening rooster & chicks idea was meant to represent Cleen & team. Did anybody on the show mention it? I MAY have changed the channel during the break, forgot what I was watching, then flipped back right as they were declaring the win for Team Cleen. Dave looks off to me this season - is it just the hair or is he also looking kind of gaunt? When did Oliver get so likeable - he used to be my least favorite and now I find myself agreeing with him. Opposite with Nunez - used to be my favorite and now I find myself glaring at him and saying "Shut up Nunez" a whole lot. He does look better this season than he has in a few, though. Is there really that much benefit to getting to put up one person for elimination? The judges still put up 2 and will send home the one they want. What does it really matter? I'm sure they would have put up Gonzo if Cleen's team hadn't. Seems like the only thing that really comes out of it is seeing how the winning team is playing the game - ie, do they really pick the person with the worst tattoo or are they using different criteria. Would be a bit different if they picked the whole bottom 3 (NOT a suggestion). I also kind of think the skull pick is overrated - they talk the canvasses out of difficult placement and stupid design stuff all the time. But I guess either option is cheaper than awarding an actual prize. Edited September 5, 2018 by cherbitrary Punctuation matters & I really can't type on my phone 3 Link to comment

As another attempt by the producers to stir up animosity, sure. Otherwise, the judges simply ignore any nominations they disagree with. It's stupid. Also dumb are the "strategic" skull picks that consistently either backfire or have zero effect. I skip that segment as well as the one where the canvases file in and describe what they want. The requests are almost certain to be modified so why bother. My mind can insert the indrawn breaths and shocked whispers among the artists as they listen. 6 Link to comment
PrincessPurrsALot September 5, 2018 Share September 5, 2018 Canvas: I want a tattoo <pause> Inktestants: gasp Canvas: on my <insert body part> Inktestant: The <body part> is hard. I don't know if she'll be able to handle the tattoo. I really hope I don't get this one. Canvas: of a <insert either too complicated for the time allotted or absolutely ridiculous idea; e.g. a rainbow unicorn shitting Chevy Camaros while being carried on a flying carpet made of feathers, beads, bells and mini ballerinas, being held aloft by Charles Atlas and a young Arnold Schwarzenegger. The driver of the Camaro needs to look like my great grandfather who you will see in this faded, mutilated photo. I also need you to incorporate the names of my six kids with their birthdates.) Inktestants: head shake, slowly mouths "wow" Inktestant: Are you willing to simplify to something that can be completed in the time we have? Canvas: No. This is the only thing I will ever have tattooed on me. This is my life encapsulated in art. Inktestant: I am going to give that to <insert inktestant they don't like/want to knock out of the competition> Inktestants: No way can I do all of that in 6 hours. No way! Inktestant: I know he's going to give it to me. He knows I'm better than him so he thinks he can knock me out of the competition. I'll show him. I tattoo <ridiculous request> all day, everyday. Inktestant: So you want <ridiculous tattoo> on your <body part>. Would you consider <simple tattoo in the inktestant's actual wheelhouse> on your <easier to tattoo body part>? Canvas: Okay, as long as you include <one part of ridiculous tattoo> Inktestants: What if instead of <one part of ridiculous tattoo> I give you <completely opposite thing with no connection to what was asked>. I think it will look really great and it will include the meaning of everything you want. Canvas: That sounds perfect! 22 Link to comment

One benefit could be it effectively makes it a bottom 2. If team cleen had put in a good tattoo that had no chance of going home then maybe the bald guy from their team would not have gone down. But that could always backfire and one of the team christian guys could have been saved. I am a bit disappointed by the opening credits after how awesome they were last season. The animated opening last season was so cool. 4 Link to comment
Inkmaster0345 September 6, 2018 Share September 6, 2018 Meh. I much prefer style challenges as opposed to subject matter challenges. Looking at 18 clocks gets pretty old really fast. Still hate this format in which past contestants come back to be "coaches". I hated it back when Survivor did it years ago and I hate it now with Ink Master. It's actually worse here because the veterans are in no danger of ever being sent home throughout the season no matter how badly they perform. Cleen or Christian were guaranteed a 50/50 shot at $100k the second they signed up--what kind of urgency is that supposed to create? Actually found some of the tattoos to be pretty good. Makes me excited for when they tattoo objects that I don't find so uninteresting. 4 Link to comment

For the first elimination tattoo the standard was actually pretty good, from what I can remember there weren't many bad tattoos. 6 Link to comment
Wandering Snark September 7, 2018 Share September 7, 2018 Don't post here often but I was drawn to post just to say one thing... Every time I see her I want to push the glasses of that blonde girl up so they aren't perched at the end of her nose. It's driving me crazy. To add something of a bit more substance I hate when Nunez and Oliver disagree because it means that Dave then is deciding who goes home and I don't feel his opinion has the same weight but there he is breaking tiebreakers. 5 Link to comment
hkit September 7, 2018 Share September 7, 2018 I usually don’t mind Dave as a tiebreaker. Unlike Ollie and Nunez, he does tend to vote based on the art and not the artist. He is the only judge who has consistently held the contestants accountable to the challenge requirements - Ollie and Nunez both have a history of applying that arbitrarily. The only knock I have against Dave as a judge is he can be swayed by the subject material. 10 Link to comment
CaptainCranky September 8, 2018 Share September 8, 2018 I'll admit I haven't watched a lot of this show over the years but this year seems like most of the contestants are losers and Christian and Cleen suck. Think I'll DVR and FF to all of the judging only and forget the faux hostilities. 2 Link to comment
NEOhio September 9, 2018 Share September 9, 2018 I agree with hkit, I think Dave tries to judge more by the challenge. Ollie and Nunez have some biases that show up every year. Yes, we know your thing is X. However we're dealing with Y tonight. Can we focus. Strangely I'm finding Cleen a better coach than I expected. I'm sure it'll dissolve into shouting on both sides. 2 Link to comment

I'm sure it'll dissolve into shouting on both sides. I'm not too surprised. I've always liked Cleen. I'm tired of them bringing him back, and Nunez is always so far up his ass it makes me crazy, but I've always liked him. From memory, it seems to me that he was never a shit starter. If someone got into it, he'd dish some drama but he never really stirred it. He's always presented as mostly good natured and despite my general dislike of new school is, in my opinion, one of the best tattooers they've had (I place the buddha blame completely on Is), even if he is constantly biffing it in the finales. Drum shouldn't have made it past Week 3, but he won that finale fair and square. Christian, on the other hand, has always been a complete asshole to everybody. I'll give him his due, that Stravinsky sleeve he did in the finale of his (first) season was one of the most beautiful tattoos I've seen. But he wants to create beef with Cleen more than he wants to win. And he's shortchanging his team in the process. Directing his team in the flash challenge to do something that was solely designed to try and get under Cleen's skin failed miserably. Meanwhile, Cleen just laughs off his nonsense and happily takes the flash win. Edited September 10, 2018 by Sile 6 Link to comment
