I've never heard it called anything other than medfly!

And can anyone enlighten me on the leid(?) category?  Did I miss an explanation,  or do I just have a gaping hole in my knowledge?

I thought it was short for leiderhosen, but probably not.

I admit I was only half paying attention.  It seemed like it had something to do with songs...?  Oh well, looking it up is a project for tomorrow.

Due to missing both Mr. Rogers and Pip, I hereby disqualify all of tonight's contestants. Really, contestants? Really? Quite a motley trio tonight, IMO.

I also got federal insurance, cytoplasm, and a few others I didn't write down.

FJ=instaget. Good for me!

Thanks to a college roommate, I know Mr. Rogers was from Latrobe, so Pittsburgh didn't connect with me.  Okay, I guess it was the nearest city with TV stations...

I didn't get Mr Rogers.  I think the whole "Night of the Living Dead" thing was throwing me. I was like, that's not a kids' show.  There was a nother clue, but I forget which one, that I couldn't even process what they were asking.  I think that one was a TS also, but not sure.

Lieder is a German song style from the 19th century.

I knew it was Jean Claude Killy but all I could think of was Claudine Longet. Free association, gotta love it.

I didn't know that was someone's name.  I thought some Olympian killed people one year.  So, I was like "the biathlon?" because that's the only thing I could think of that involved shooting.  LOL.

  • I got FJ before *I* finished reading the clue, much less Alex.  Gumshoes are why Gummo Marx got that as his nickname.
  • I don't know why the bullets thing has been activated.
  • I didn't do it.
  • Chick on the end was serial-killer scary looking. Or attempting to be a winsome puppy doggo, with her head down & eyes up, Doggies always do that to seduce you into thinking they're harmless, cute pieces of fluff.
  • I'm tired of the champ but the other two weren't any better with all the TSs tonight.

My husband said the same thing about the girl on the end, he said she was "Scary looking" 🙂  She had odd eyes, she bent her head & had her hair hanging too close around her face.  Meanwhile, the Champ guy has a very 70's 'porn stashe" 🙂

Same here.

I only saw bits and pieces of tonight's game, but I was annoyed that a couple of the clues (among those I saw) in the Acronyms category were initialisms, not acronyms -- PDA and BCE are not pronounced as words (e.g. SCUBA), you just read out the letters.

I wondered if they'd give it to me if I said MedFly.

Ohhhh. So THAT'S why mayfly came to my mind. I knew that wasn't right, but I couldn't remember Mediterranean fruit fly. (I should have, as I was living in SoCal at the time.)

I got Pip, skiing, and Federal Insurance. I got a little confused with the change-a-letter category. The Sulu/Solo clue had me thinking there was a Star Trek episode where Sulu went into another dimension which changed his name to Solo.

I got FJ, too. I didn't know that word origin. Cool.

This is what sometimes happens when the contestants skip the first clue. That's where the explanation was. "Typically, 19th century lieder, or songs, were arranged for 1 vocalist and 1 accompanist on this instrument"

Did the woman on the end even answer a single question before the first commercial break? I thought for sure she was a goner but she rallied nicely. I was rooting for middle guy. I do like Sam’s gutsy DD wagering, though.

I didn't see those first two clues (I saw the show only in bits and pieces tonight), but that last one surprised me as a TS - none of them know what that deduction on their paycheck stands for?  Even with all the "Who's FICA, and why is he taking all my money?" jokes, I was surprised none of the three knew.  Even if they didn't know what it stood for, but knew it funds Social Security and Medicare, I'd have thought someone would look at the letters FI preceding contribution and think, "Oh, wait - federal insurance?"

From Wikipedia:

Quote

Lied. ... Lieder are normally songs for a singer with piano accompaniment. They were mostly composed in the 19th century which was the period known as the Romantic period. The most famous composers of Lieder were Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss.

I thought the woman on the end was looking a little odd too but she played very well.

My only ts's were Pip and skiing.  I had trouble with some of the clues last night, misreading them and therefore coming up with stupid answers.

But I did get FJ, not quite an instaget but very close.

So many TS tonight!  The ones I got include Mr. Rogers, Solo, Nana, Pip, Tan, Federal Insurance, and I wondered if they'd give it to me if I said MedFly.  I decided they would, since that's what everyone called those back in the day.

That's what my mind was trying to pull out. I must have buried the memory deep - the helicopters coming over our house and spraying malathion was traumatic.

I got it from "lied" which is really just the generic word for song in German, and "lieder" was the plural. At least that's the way it was used when I grew up there. Never knew there was a specific origin to the word.

I remember MedFlies in Florida in the 50s. They had sprayed northern FL and were moving south. We were on a family vacation and, on a back road near Lake Okeechobee, agents stopped us and told us we could go no further north if we had any fruit with us.  Our family of 4 stood there, on the side of the road, eating at least two peaches each before they confiscated the rest of the fruit and let us go.  Fun memory, alright!

I apologize in advance because I know this has been asked before, but does anyone know where I can watch jeopardy online other than the livestream on abc.com? My cable company has blocked the channel it’s on and we haven’t been able to watch for two weeks!

At the start of the game, it looked like Middle Guy was going to run away with it, but then Breakfast Club Basket Case caught fire.  Porn Stache stayed strong throughout and was lucky to have NOT found the nonsensical Lieder category DD.  Not that it mattered after FJ.

I got FJ, but the only TSs I got were Morgan and Harbor Barber.  I did not do well in Supreme Court Clerks, or the Bartlett's quotations, or documentaries.  I did do well in TV deaths and horses.

Almost an instaget FJ today -- my initial response was, "The woman who wrote The Lottery!  Shirley... Shirley.... JACKSON!!!!"  I got it in plenty of time to write it down.  But, gee, I don't know if I would have gotten it if the category hadn't been "Women Authors" -- I might have gotten all confused, thinking they were looking for a man.

I'm not a fan of the DD being under the lowest value clue.  Second-lowest is okay, but when you (sensibly) start at the top of the category, you don't really know what the category is about.  So when that clue is the DD, how do you know how to wager?  I'd be inclined to wager less on one of my (many) weaker categories, and more on a stronger one.  At least this time the category was straightforward.

Thank you, "Justin Morgan Had A Horse" (by another woman author, Marguerite Henry) for that TS that I got!  I also got harbor barber, Feeding America, France (surprising TS), and fascists.

I was right there with you Browncoat following the same route to FJ.  I remember getting totally creeped out the first time I read The Lottery.

Somewhat sad the the Woody Guthrie quote was a TS and perplexed as to how a guitar was supposed to kill trees.

I was spoiled for FJ. I might have gotten it from the clue, but we'll never know.

I'm liking Sam more and more. He brought the attitude today and backed up the swagger with 2 big DDs and a runaway game. I have a strong suspicion that he's going to lose tomorrow, though.

What was the correct response for the clue about Tesla in the Friends category? My satellite feed cut out briefly. My guess is pigeons. If that is right then I got 22/30 on the Jeopardy round, my best in awhile. We won't discuss DJ.

TS: Little Lord Fauntleroy, Morgan

Acoustic guitar...made of wood...trees had to die to make it. It was a very literal guess, but it still made me laugh.

@Abstract, the answer was pigeons.  I’m re reading Shirley Jackson’s books about raising her family, and it’s hard to believe the same woman wrote “The Lottery.”

Rats. I love 'The Lottery', but Shirley Jackson never occurred to me. I was torn betw Patricia Highsmith and Daphne du Maurier. I went with the latter.

The only TS I got was Feeding America, which I give to regularly.

I got a chuckle out of Alex saying, "Alger Hiss. Boo hiss." 😄

When I was a horse-crazy pre-teen, I received that book.  Loved it!  My bucket list included the pony swim from Assateague to Chincoteague that Henry wrote about in Misty of Chincoteague, and I've gotten to go twice!  For a Kansan, that was a dream come true!

I record the show. I sometimes don’t pay attention to the FJ category because I’ve fast forwarded too far. I sent my family a message of “Alex gave them a huge hint by saying ‘her’” and then I came here and read the category name. Oops.

Feeding America does great stuff. More people should know them!

I said trees, too.  I think partly because it rhymed with "these" although that would obviously have had nothing to do with anything.  More a subliminal thing my brain did.

Both are correct - I say "on-clave" as well. I would have expected Alex to say it that way, as it sounds more like French (which is where it English "borrowed" it from, according to Merriam Webster).

Exactly.  I thought that was a very easy Daily Double, if you understood what the category was about.  And if you know classical music, I suppose.  Schubert is probably the name most closely associated with Leider, and "Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel" is one of his better known songs.  I would have rocked that category.

I didn't get FJ tonight -- I just completely blanked on any country's name with "North" in it while I did the math to see if that would help.  It didn't.

And apparently I know too much about the language of labs -- I don't know if they would have given me any of my answers (though they all were technically correct), including "balance" instead of "scale".

At least I got rampart, I guess.

I was not able to keep score today because my kid kept distracting me. But I know I got scale, profane, rampart, House of Cards. No clue on FJ.

So Sam is a 5-day champ and yet they decided to announce the ToC early and give a spot to a 3-day champ. This doesn't make sense.

I came so close to running the Andrew Davies category, then I was too slow coming up with George Eliot.
