S27: Cheryl Burke

Recommended Posts

Surprisingly, I couldn't find a thread for her so I had to come up with a title. According to Wiki, her first dance on DWTS in Season 2 was a Cha-cha-cha to She Bangs. I promise not to be insulted if a better title comes along. Anyway, I brought this over from General Gabbery.

I agree that Karina would have been able to get Charlie to the finals; possibly even more so than Cheryl. Karina can't always dance full out but when she's been able to work with partners who can keep up, it's been magical. The glimpses into her into her creative process that we've been given in the past, I remember to have been really impressive and more importantly interesting enough to include in packages. Plus, she's a Latin specialist and I think she would have been able to pick the right approach to make Charlie really shine.

Cheryl isn't my favorite pro but she's done fabulous work with Rob Kardashian and Jack Osbourne. I think either one of them would have gotten Charlie to the finals because they know how to play the DWTS game better than Sharna. And they have huge fan bases of their own that rival Maks's.

That's fair enough. Being a back-to-back winner is impressive and making it so deep into so many seasons is also a credit to her ability to play the DWTS game. I saw on Wiki that she has some Latin Champion Awards from 2005 under her belt, but I'm really having trouble remembering her traditional Latin routines.

The one standard Latin dance that she's choreographed that's the most memorable to me is Emmitt's Samba to the song Cha-cha which was wonderfully entertaining but seemed to emphasize the bounce and the party more than what we're now getting for Samba technique. I don't think she'd get away with it these days. I'm no expert, so, of course, I could be wrong on this point. It was definitely a fun dance.

It's also possible that Cheryl may have been able to finesse a better schedule of dances for Charlie by coming up with a compelling through-line for the season.

This is the best-conditioned Cheryl has ever been.  Girl must have done some serious work between seasons.  I hope she hasn't gone too far.

I'm very pleased she has a potential winner for a partner.  It has been forever!

It's really too bad that this is her last season. I would have loved for her to have a better partner. Antonio is going to get lost in the mix and they will probably be out early on. She has been my favorite pro for years and I'm going to miss seeing her on the show. I always loved how she was with her partners, tough but caring. Her season with Gilles was incredible. I also loved her with Jack Osbourne. I hope that the show does a little tribute to her or something because I think she deserves to go out with a bang.

She has stated it in a few interviews. One of them was with Life & Style magazine. She stated that she has been doing the show for 10 years and wants to try new things and see what's out there.

It's nice to see the old Cheryl back that we had in her earliest seasons.  Her work the past couple of years has reminded me of the fun, joyful routines that Julie Fryer used to put together on the Dutch DWTS.

I'm glad to see her having fun again, and if this really is her last season, I'm going to miss her terribly.  Still, I can understand why she'd be more than ready to move on after 10 (!) years.

I wish Cheryl hand been featured more knowing this was her final season. I'm really going to miss her and her dance style. I'm going to miss seeing her rehearsal videos and her banter with Tom B. I hope she has a great post DWTS career and I hope she is happy in her personal life as well.

I think Cheryl may have been pushed out due to Rob Wade having a new vision for the show. I got this impression from the two following quotes:

Words from Rob Wade:

"We'll only survive as a show if we keep innovating and changing. It's very sad to see cast members leave, but again that gives you the opportunity to grow," Wade told the website. "So, I'm quite positive about having the opportunity to bring new people in or bring back some of the old faces."

From Cheryl:

"As of now, it's still up in the air if I'm coming back or not. Contractually, my contract is over and there's other opportunities that have been out there for me," Burke, who has been on the show consecutively since Season 2, tells TVGuide.com. "Will it most likely be my last season? I would have to say yes."

My comments:  What a bizarre way to talk about someone who's leaving if you really want her to stay:  "We'll only survive if we keep innovating and changing..." and "I'm quite positive..."   WTH?  Why not be nice and rhapsodize about how great she is and you hope she comes back?

And from Cheryl, if it's HER option, what's this, "it's still up in the air..."  Wouldn't you say, I'm still considering it?  "up in the air" doesn't sound like what you'd say if YOU were the one being indecisive.

I also read a sad farewell sounding post from Karina after she was booted and it too sounded like she was being pushed. Don't have the quote handy but it's the distinct impression I got. I think they're just being nice and letting these girls say it was their own decision when it was the producer(s).  Nice meaning sometimes they don't tell the pros ahead of time they're being let go and let them save face by saying it's their own decision - but in this case, I think they did at least grant them that small thing.

Karina's still publicly trying to get her acquaintances and friends to do DWTS, and request her as a partner, so I don't think she's definitely out next season. I read her "farewell" post and my impression is, as a smart woman, she sees the writing on the wall. Her contract expired at the end of the season, and with back-to-back early eliminations and, at 36, being the oldest female pro, her chances of being asked back might not be that high. I do agree that she's being phased out, but I don't think she's officially been told of her status for season 20. She's one of my favorites and I'll be very disappointed if she doesn't return. As for Cheryl, I thought the indecision had to do more with her waiting to see if any of her other projects will materialize before leaving the comfort of DWTS. I remember at the end of season 18, she was saying she'd probably not return for season 19. Yet she did. Things have seemed to change since that TV Guide interview, because all reports now suggest with more certainty that she is not participating as a full time pro next season.

Wow, I was not aware Rob Wade was even involved with the vision of the show. Interesting, but it doesn't bode well for the "ballroom content" on the show.

He is the executive producer afterall. I read an interview where he basically agreed the show has been getting away from its roots, but that trend wouldn't continue for the 10th anniversary season which is going to be more ballroom-based. And then there's this tweet by Louis yesterday:

LouisVanAmstel: I have a hunch season 20 of DWTS is going back to what made the show great to begin w. More ballroom, clothes haha #romance #fredginger

Also:

LouisVanAmstel: I don't want to confirm anything I can't, but there's a good chance I'll be doing the 20th season of #dwts @DancingABC #10yearanniversary
