I loved that the editors caught and included that moment with Shep calling out Craig for having no t-shirt/undershirt on under his sweater. It's all part of the chronicling of Craig's slow but sure slide into complete and total dishevelment this season. Looks like going to the ball with Craig sends Naomi spiraling back into her psycho mode next episode. Can't wait.

When did undershirts become a thing again?  My father wore one every day (born in 1920), my hubs (born in 1945) has never worn one that I'm aware of.  I mean, I can see the benefit, but I really didn't think it was a big deal that Craig wasn't wearing one.

So disappointing that this show is over next week. When it first started, I Never watched, now it's one of my faves! That and NY, is some of the best tv I've seen in a long time. Maybe I need to get out more...

It's funny no one ever talks about how much Cam likes being on camera. tbh I'm over her nagging Shep. I like the friendship she has with Shep and Whitney but the nagging is just annoying.

I was thinking about Cam's relationship with those two, and I can see her getting exasperated at Shep's continual blockheadedness when she sees his potential. Even down to reading a recipe, with his excuse that his mom did everything for him. (Cam's response to that was great. Mom did Shep no favors with that.) And with Whit, well, she just seems supremely comfortable with him despite the odd shape he takes in this show. Maybe it really is a true friendship among the three and not just camera clips and glossy Instagram photos.

Is there anyone more annoying than Ashley? She's such a desperate goldigger.  I don't know how Thomas managed to keep her on as his girlfriend! How can anyone be so self-unaware and see that people don't enjoy her company?

Thomas doesn't see it in himself, har. I can't imagine all the women in this show are terribly comfortable when he's around. Yet he's getting such a calm, reasonable edit, still acting as the Benign Yet Ever-Judging God when speaking of Kathryn's and Ashley's respective behaviors. We're supposed to forget all his gaslighting and excesses and assaults (still going on!).  I wouldn't be surprised if off-camera, he's been promising Ashley everything, and if this isn't just dramaed up for the show, she's genuinely bewildered and wretched by how his actions aren't matching up. She's still an unpleasant person.

Craig's eventual response to the whole "Take Naomi to the daaaannnnce" crap was excellent (and I paraphrase): "I would have married her. Would you have married Austen?" Shut that whole peer pressure situation right down!

Still, he does need to wake up a bit. Maybe he truly perceives things differently. Like time, and deadlines. But he's right, he shouldn't work for anyone else. They'd be driven to commit murder.

ETA: Loved Kathryn's outfit. She was knowingly going back to a place she sources as the cause of her depression. She didn't know how she'd react. Armoring herself in an outfit she felt confident in was a great choice, plus I'd love to have it myself, so there's that. :)

Craig is as annoying af. I wish he would approach things as this is how I struggle, I recognize this in myself, here is how I am going to handle it. Instead, nothing is his fault. Patricia (who I can't stand) tells him he has two weeks, he takes two months, and then says if he had one more day. Stfu. No one believes you. Last year at that restaurant thing with Naomie. She asked him to do something very simple, he waited until the very last minute, stresses her out, shows up, and then wants a pat on the back? No. And the lying. No one believes his lies. Why lie even? Like Austen said, just tell Naomie you have a date. It's pretty simple. He makes things so complicated and yet wants all the praise.

Shep and Kathryn should stay friends and that's it. I think she needs a younger guy. Maybe Naomie's boyfriend can hook her up with someone.

Ashley is trying to say on instagram she was just joking about getting with Shep or Craig. I 100% do not think she was joking. She was dead serious. Anything for validation. I hate her. And all the people on her instagram praising her and trash talking Kathryn. It's mind boggling. Either she makes up a lot of fake accounts or there are some fucking stupid people watching this show. I am sure it is both.

I think she needs a sober guy. It would not be good for her to be in a relationship with someone who drinks as much as Shep or any of these guys. If she wants to stay sober, her whole life will have to change. Hopefully off season she spends time with some non-drinking friends.

I am not convinced she was just depressed when she went MIA for a week. She could've been drinking and still passed a drug test, depending on when it was. Alcohol doesn't stay in your system very long. I also wonder if she is still employed. There really is no excuse for not calling her supervisor. Even if she was depressed, she could have called in sick.

Having said that, I am impressed by what a turnaround Kathryn has made this season. It's like watching a new person. She seems composed, rational and mature. Whatever medication she is on must have also helped tamp down her emotions and histrionics. I don't think this show is good for her recovery though. I hope she is able to find other employment.

Chelsea is my second favorite (after Cameron). I think she's cute, interesting and fun. She can do better than Austen.

I actually felt a little sorry for Ashley when she was talking to Shep. She sounded so pathetic and was blind to his body language. He was looking around, avoiding eye contact with her and seemed uncomfortable. It was obvious he did not want to talk to her. The other thing I can't figure out is why she stays with Thomas, who doesn't seem into her at all. He has pretty much told her that he can take or leave her. The relationship is about 70% her and 30% him.

Can we discuss how Kathryn said she and Kenzie lived in the basement when they were at the plantation? Wtf! Why? I get that Thomas wasn’t that into Kathryn but making her and HIS CHILD live in the basement? That seems nuts, if true. I mean, I’m sure it was a nice basement but it’s still a damn basement...doesn’t send a message that he loves and cares for the people there.  Unless he was like remodeling the upstairs??? Prob not..

They showed a flashback clip of her changing Kenzie in this episode in what appeared to be a nursery that had a bunch of windows but I do remember that there was also another room that was darker so who knows.

That said this episode she lived in this space and pointed to the wall when she and Danin were going up the stairs but they were going up the stairs to the top of the barn not the house so maybe Kathryn doesn’t have a clear memory of those days, especially since she said she was all alone and carrying for Kenzie all by herself but we know that isn’t true because the nanny Dawn lived with them. Not saying that she couldn’t be isolated with Dawn there who was an employee hired by Thomas and not a realitive or friend but it’s revisionist history to suggest that she had no help taking care of Kenzie even if Thomas wasn’t there that frequently and wasn’t hands on.

I do find it interesting that she always seems to go out of her way to greet Thomas and give him a hug - not in a way that I think she wants to get back with him, but that it's the southern way to be polite? When she's not off the rails she does seem to have really good manners.

I know a lot of people don't like chelsea but I LOVE her. I want to be friends with her. I love her no-nonsense no-BS way of dealing with things.

When you have kids with someone it's really hard to break away.  Even if the relationship was toxic.  Going back to that person in moments of weakness is easy because it's a comfortable situation. I believe her when she says that she's over Thomas but it's still a comfortable area for her to be with him and I can appreciate that they can have calm conversations this season.

I don't think Ashley was flirting with the guys. I think she was trying to get validation from them and take that back and use it on Thomas. She can say "oh you don't want me? Well Craig, JD, and Shep all said they would do me"  And I can't believe she actually asked Shep "would you do me???"  So Trashy. Unless I heard her wrong but I thought she repeated it twice.

I didn't think about that but you are so right!  What a piece of work!!

Isn't that the house where she was when the nanny was showing her how to cook something, and she spread mayonnaise on grilled cheese?  I was under the impression she lived in that house where the kitchen was.

She did. Which makes her pointing to the stables which is where they were when she said it super strange. The roof deck where they were watching the polo match is on top of the stables on the plantation. The main house is set farther back and is where they were for the dinner.

This has been my favorite season of Southern Charm by far. Other than Ashley, I really like most of the people now on the show and I like that there isn't a lot of drama and fighting among them . NY is the only Real Housewives show that I still enjoy, and even with them the constant rotation of who's bickering with who each week is tiresome. I love just watching the Southern Charmers hang out. Even if they just met by being on the show, it feels like there are real, solid friendships there. My favorite episode was on Hilton Head where some of them went fishing and others crabbing. I could watch that all day long. It doesn't always have to be about drama.

I think a lot of the cast are witty and funny. In this episode, on the pier when Shep said to Kathryn that he heard Patricia had invited her to the ball Kathryn said something like, "When I saw the name Patricia Altschul (on the invitation), I thought shit am I being served?"  When Chelsea confirmed to Shep that Austen was her date to the ball Shep replied, "Well better luck next time". And, of course, Shep's "is it a laundry issue?" to Craig. I find myself laughing a lot.

No Landon this season has really, really improved it for me. Chelsea is so much more likable and down to earth. I really like Whitney and still want to see him on the show, but him not having a story line this year has also helped. His story lines always seemed to be the most fake of all so always felt so awkward to me. I like him better just hanging out with the gang.

Finally, I do enjoy the house porn. I covet Chelsea's townhouse, especially the dining room with the orange chairs and coordinating rug. At Danni's house, she had pictures hanging on the wall in macrame hangers like you would normally hang a plant in. It looked so cool I want to try it. I'm still drooling over Shep's family home in NC from a prior season.

I hope they continue on a similar path next season: more fun, not too much drama.

I feel like this season has been a dud because Cameron has barely been in it.  The girls need Cam to talk some sense into them--there's no way a relationship works with Cheltsie and Austen, she just likes that he's a puppy to her.  Craig and Naomie should have nothing to do with each other.  She got tired of lying for him and his lies so they're done, quit trying to force them together, show!

Shep and Katherine do not belong together!  What a train wreck that would be.  He can't commit to a pet let alone a recovering addict with mental health issues and two kids.

Ashley's just with Thomas to be on the show, right?  They have no chemistry, he appears to be putting up with her in every scene and she's actively asking his friends if they would date her?!

Agree! I love the moments of wit, which really come through when people are friends and feel comfortable around each other. I'm also surprised at how funny Katherine can be! That to me is a sign of intelligence. Her 'being served' line really made me lol. I thought that was subtle but so funny! She also is self-deprecating in her humor, which can be endearing. I have grown to like them all as well. As opposed to OC, where I can't stand any of them. I actually enjoy Ashley because I like a good villain, adds a little fun. Love the house porn too, although I still think Patricia's house is spectacular, I'm beginning to think it's loosing it's luster just a tiny bit, a bit too tcha-tchkeyed up maybe? Something is off for me about her house this year, similar to the feelings I started to get about Sonja's townhouse a couple of seasons ago after loving it the first season. I think I love Shep's house the most. It's got great bones -love the exterior - and something about a beach house always wins my heart. I'm going to miss this show :(

Yeah, I forgot to add that he still needs to sew himself up a backbone. But then that's self-evident at this point for ol' Craigster. I hope Naomi doesn't come off looking worse again next ep. --though his derail attempt in this ep did get him out of the screeching for the time being. He already knew it wouldn't go over well.

I wonder if Thomas has tried to get away from his dad's horrible views, but lacks the strength. So often I see him resort to the noncombative "Mmm-hmm" at what comes out of his dad's mouth. He's got to know that times changed eons ago and his dad is an unfortunate living relic. And yet. There's the will to consider! (I speculate.)

Kathryn is better off without him. She's doing the cordial route quite well, so it seems. It confuses him, heh.

I actually like Kathryn and Shep together.  I don't think anyone's thinking about something serious, nothing wrong with just having fun.  Sure he drinks but the whole group does and she seems to be okay with just water or a soda.  Plus, them hooking up would drive TRav insane - and Ashley even more insane to witness his jealousy.

According to her they have already hooked up a few times and he hasn't knocked her up so far.  I'm sure he bags it when he sleeps with her, knowing how fertile she is LOL.  Also I'm sure she got pregnant both times on purpose, and now she's older and wise enough to know that a baby doesn't guarantee a ring on her finger, and she's got enough on her plate taking care of 2 kids, even if part-time.

Then again, I could be giving these idiots waaaay too much credit :-S

Heh, if Kathryn gets impregnated by Shep, you think he'd grow up?

If his mail box money is enough for some minimal child support while allowing him to keep his lifestyle, it will be adios Kathryn

If this thing is real, Shep better find out if he could stand living with her or spending extended periods of time with her.  These little dates for the show are not representative of what living with her will be like, as Thomas quickly found out.

Shep could see his comfortable world fall apart.

All the undercurrents and things not said during the potential break up discussion with Thomas & Ashley make me believe there's some truth to the hired girlfriend rumors. Won't go so far to say that she's a paid escort, but I can I see her threatening to spill stuff if he didn't keep her around.  That said, the thought of Thomas being blackmailed pleases ne immensely.

I really can’t figure out this Ashley thing. She seems so needy with Thomas, jealous of his attention to anyone else (man or woman), so angry and hateful to Kathryn about situations that should be discussed/settled between Thomas and Kathryn and are really none of Ashley’s business. If this was all a put-up deal to give Thomas a new girlfriend, then why is Ashley so mean, angry and pushy towards T and also K? She has no dog in this fight as far as I can tell because there’s no way on God’s green earth that Thomas is going to marry this woman. And no way on God’s green earth that she’s going to be any kind of mother to those two poor children. The last thing they need is another psycho in their lives! Go back home, Cali girl. You tried and failed in Charleston.

Frankly, Shep could stand to have a little of the old AA himself! Maybe he can come to that realization, he would finally get on the wagon, and the two of them could settle in to being a nice 'dry' couple.

Just for the record, there are NO basements here in the South Carolina Lowcountry.  We're at sea level here or just slightly above it and everything is built on sand!  When I heard Kathryn say she was in the basement, I rolled my eyes.  I was reminded of just how much I miss my basement from when I lived in NJ!

It must have been a walk out basement. I remember wondering myself why the heck  Kensie slept in the basement?? They showed Kathryn waking up and going down into the dark basement to get Kensie out of her crib. I was appalled, esp that Kathryn and Thomas were one or two floors up!

Craig always looks dirty/disheveled. What was that about Austen having to persuade Craig to kiss a girl and then he didn’t like it? Oh Craig....

If only meanie Patricia had given Craigie one more day he would have made a pillow worthy to be sold in a Chanel boutique! Just one.more.day!!!

Ashley has mental problems. Babbling on and on to Shep who looked so put off. Then asking if he would date her so she could stay in South Carolina if her and Thomas go kaput. She is unhinged and Thomas is a fool for keeping her around, and around his kids. Eww.

Kathryn’s polo match outfit, not sure how I feel about it, but she did handle herself well.  She and Thomas have always had such great chemistry that I used to wish they could make it work, but not anymore, she deserves better.

I did like Ashley’s polo match outfit, she looked pretty but acted way too stressed out, she’s better off without Thomas too.

I wanted some of those steamed oysters, yum! Naomi was so cute enjoying them, I’d have been right there with her.

How is it possible that Shep couldn’t follow a recipe for meatballs??!

When did undershirts become a thing again?  My father wore one every day (born in 1920), my hubs (born in 1945) has never worn one that I'm aware of.  I mean, I can see the benefit, but I really didn't think it was a big deal that Craig wasn't wearing one.

Undershirts are supposed to be worn under dress shirts to prevent staining from occurring and allow shirts to last longer (along with keeping hair and nipples from showing through a light shirt). I get the sense that men who are in suits five days a week are mostly undershirt guys for this reason, while the dress shirts only on Sundays, weddings and funerals crowd tend to be a lot looser with that rule. This article explains the two sides of the coin nicely. Craig should definitely wear undershirts as he often seems sweaty and grubby even in non-physically assertive environments. Perhaps that's what Shep was responding to?

Isn't that the house where she was when the nanny was showing her how to cook something, and she spread mayonnaise on grilled cheese?  I was under the impression she lived in that house where the kitchen was.

It was salmon but yes, same house

I don't like her, and I don't remember exactly why.  I always get a bitchy vibe from her, but I feel like there was something on the show that made me not like her.

I think a white t-shirt looks nice under a sweater, especially a button-up sweater.  It is weird to have nothing underneath.

I think she was joking.  I like her, and I don't like Kathryn - and I'm not fucking stupid.  I get Ashley, and I really don't like Kathryn.  I don't understand why everything thinks she is some kind of breath of fresh air, I find her to be boring and strange.

I agree!  I also remember that one episode, Shep's dad said something like, "Shep's wife hasn't been born yet!" and his mom laughed and laughed.  Pretty sure they encourage his bachelor life.

I have to ask: what is it you like about Ashley?  I'm genuinely curious, since she's currently one of the most despised reality show personalities on the interwebz.

I don't think undershirts ever stopped being a thing when it comes to dress sweaters.  You don't wear a sweater like Craig was wearing without SOMETHING underneath, since it's meant to go over another shirt.  I don't think I've ever worn a sweater without another shirt underneath it, come to think of it.

My husband wears undershirts to work especially. It helps with sweat here in Texas, not to mention, I'm sure his co-workers don't want to see his nipples and tattoos through his dress shirts.

I live at sea level too in New Orleans, except everything here is built on swampy soil.   No traditional basements here either, but people who live in houses with the main living areas on the second level call the ground level a basement.  It's totally above ground and has doors and windows, but it's still called a basement.  Maybe Charleston is similar

It’s hot as hell in the South. Nobody wears undershirts except when they’re cutting the grass. And that’s the only shirt they wear. :D

She's either A. guarded and unsure if these friendships are actually real or B. Just doesn't like to hug people

I do find it interesting that she always seems to go out of her way to greet Thomas and give him a hug - not in a way that I think she wants to get back with him, but that it's the southern way to be polite? When she's not off the rails she does seem to have really good manners.

She also calls Patricia "Miss Pat".  None of the others do that.  She was definitely raised to be respectful which I appreciate.  You can see it now that she's on medication and "not off the rails"  lol!!

The Dustin Waters recap:

https://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/HolyCinema/archives/2018/06/30/confessions-of-a-southern-charm-newbie-polo-no-mo

His description of the Thomas/Ashley ride: Skipping ahead to the most uncomfortable car ride since the third act of Se7en, we find Thomas and Ashley heading to his plantation house (ughh). Recounting how awful his relationship currently is, Thomas tells us that women have always “been attracted to him for the wrong reasons.” I would agree. Really any reason to be attracted to Thomas Ravenel is the wrong reason. Trying to think of something nice to say about Thomas is like trying to divide by zero.

I also get the feeling that this road trip included multiple instances of Thomas attempting to abandon Ashley at gas stations. There is a 100 percent chance that Ashley removes Thomas' spark-plugs every time they stop to use the bathroom and fuel up.

Apparently, he can only read and understand classics but cannot follow a simple, idiot-friendly, bullet-ed, step-by-step instruction manual.

Austen let it out that Victoria had hooked up with Shep. And that he (Austen) almost hooked up with Hannah from Below Deck. His muppet mouth can't help but kiss and tell.

I live in Florida and most guys I know wear undershirts with button downs and the very rare moments when a sweater is required. My husband was always grossed out by a coworker who did not wear an undershirt to work because when the dude would sweat (it's hot here), everyone could see through his shirt and see the outline of his sweaty chest hair. I guess the undershirts serve as sweat soppers? It cracked me up that Shep commented on it, though. He's hardly a vision of upscale fashion, but even he's wondering why Craig sometimes can't manage to get all the way dressed. I like Craig, but he's a space cadet and if I knew him I'd be perpetually frustrated with him. He might throw the dart and have some successes, but that kid will never reach his potential as long as he thinks deadlines are arbitrary and that his time is worth more than everyone else's, given that he seems to show up late all the time. If only he'd had one more night...to whine about needing one more night...

I don't know exactly why, but I feel like I get her.  I also think she is right in a lot of the situations, she can be annoying, and she can definitely stand to use some tact, but I thought - she does see the kids more than Kathryn!  Maybe she was told by Thomas that Kathryn didn't even try to see Saint in the hospital.

It could be that I really don't like Kathryn and don't buy her newfound good image.  I take everything with a grain (several tons) of salt, but I thought that word on the street is that she is drinking.  She's not stable, that is clear.  I also just plain don't like her, and so you know how the enemy of my enemy is my friend?  I just feel like I want to take Ashley's side.  I am not agreeing with everything she does and says, but I like her.

I also cannot stand Naomi, who seems to think she is the star of the show.  Chelsea I am so so with, but as a whole, I don't like the new gang, it feels very "mean girls" to me.  They were able to scare off that other girl, the unicorn.
