From TV Line's Spoilers:

LAW & ORDER: SVU

NBC’s unstoppable procedural kicks off its 20th (!) season with a two-hour premiere about “what it means to be a man,” showrunner Michael Chernuchin tells TVLine. Dylan Walsh (Nip/Tuck) guest-stars in the season opener as an upstanding businessman who’s known as a great guy in his community… so he’s gotta be a closet pervert, right? “Nobody’s perfect,” Chernuchin says. “Let’s put it that way.” SVU, now airing Thursdays, also will introduce George Newbern (Scandal) as Dr. Al, aka the escort-loving cardiologist Rollins dated last season (“They haven’t seen each other since she dumped him,” the EP notes); and Sandrine Holt (Homeland) as Lisa Abernathy, a psychologist who’ll help Peter Stone with his grief over his sister’s murder. On the Windy City side of things, Carl Weathers will bring his Chicago Justice character Mark Jefferies to town, and former Chicago Fire star Monica Raymund will direct Episode 8. Meanwhile, remember how Fin pulled strings to stay at SVU despite his promotion to sergeant? There’ll be consequences, Chernuchin previews, and “we’ll deal with that during the season.”

BONUS SPOILER!: Carisi will wonder why he’s shut out of Rollins’ private life, but take heart, detective: “We are planning on sprucing up his love life a little bit later on in the season,” the EP says.

RETURN DATE: Thursday, Sept. 27 at 9/8c (NBC, two-hour premiere)

Wow.  That all sounds... so exciting.  Not.  Particularly the Stone storyline.  Yawn.

But, hey!  They remembered Carisi!  They're going to spruce up his love life "a little bit"?  Well, I guess beggars can't be choosers.  Heretofore his love life has been non-existent, deleted girlfriends notwithstanding, so "a little bit" is an improvement.

I remember the old days when this franchise didn't focus on who was schtupping who. I miss that. The Chicago franchise has always been glorified soap, but the Mothership along with SVU (early on) and CI, while having personal stuff, didn't focus on love lives. Sigh. (Can't comment on the unsuccessful offshoots like Los Angeles or Trial By Jury as they were blink and gone, and the details have long since faded.)

Did Dick Wolf go soft?

I don’t give a flying fuck about any of the romantic lives of the characters. I’m not happy about Rollins’ ex boyfriend coming on, I don’t care about Carisi’s love life and I certainly don’t want another Benson boyfriend. I wish this show was about the cases and not about the characters private lives.

I am interested to see the new psych expert, I’m glad that Stone will be talking to someone other than Benson about his grief over his sister’s death, and I’m hoping this character can consult with SVU some and fill the void left by Huang, maybe she can talk to Carisi at some point as well about some of the trauma he’s been through. I look forward to seeing Mark Jefferies again as well.

SVU has always given us more of the squad's personal lives than the mothership, and I'm okay with that when it's done well.  Problem is, more often than not, it's not done well.  But if they are going to go there, with everyone else, I want Carisi to get his fair share of the screentime.

For me, I've had enough of the therapy sessions with Benson.  They've bored me with her, and with Stone, a character I find boring, so far, in and of himself?  Yikes.  Put me to sleep, why don't you, Show.

What I really want, I think, is for them to shift Carisi over to the new show, as well as Barba, and there you go.  That's enough show for me.

That is probably a state of affairs Mr. Wolf would not like.  ;)

Oh Hell no! Barba would be working for Benson, who would be telling him when he could piss. We already had that for six years. Besides, Barba is a lawyer, not a cop. Something Benson seemed to forget.

Oh, no no.  I mean put Barba (and Carisi) on the new show.  I'm sure they'll have their own boss on HC.  For me, Barba's character only degraded the last two seasons.  He was great during the Leight years, and HC is Leight's show so...

Barba is NEVER coming back. Some people don’t seem to realize that for some reason, but Barba is gone and isn’t ever returning, it’s clear. And to the people who constantly complain that “Stone isn’t Barba”, well Stone isn’t supposed to be Barba, he’s Stone, and if he was a Barba clone no one would like that, Stone is his own character, and I feel like a lot of people aren’t even giving him a chance.

I like Fin, Stone and Carisi, although I want Carisi to get better storylines than having family members get assaulted, there is so much more to explore with Carisi and I hope the writers do a better job with him.

Benson is just intolerable now, she acts more like an advocate than a squad leader, her bias and emotions control the way she does her job, she micromanages the detectives and snaps at them if they disagree with her, her ego is enormous and she’s generally been unbearable since Hargitay became a producer. I don’t like Rollins either, she’s one unethical fuck up after another, and her treatment of the victim in Service should’ve gotten her kicked out of SVU, and I’m beyond sick of her sex life (Benson’s as well for that matter).

I hope the show continues to bring back popular characters from across the franchise like they did in season 19.

The Hate Crimes Unit is under, supervised by, works for, the SVU. That's what it said. And it's a POLICE unit, not lawyers. Barba would have to be a cop now, under Benson's supervision. He already put in six years as an ADA doing the same thing. Oh Hell No. I want to see RE on a reboot of Perry Mason. THATS what I'd like to see. Not Barba continuing to kiss Benson's big ass.

Barba was not dissbarred. McCoy could not have asked him to stay. Barba was absolved, and if McCoy wanted him to stay then other agencies wouldn't have a problem with him either. The State Bar would definitely talk to him and maybe impose some kind of penance, but, he was found not guilty, so, he gets to keep his License to Practice. It was clear when Barba left, he was still a lawyer. If the Bar Assoc. had intended to cut him loose, they would have before or during the trial. They didn't. And the Defense attorney members would point out he was pronounced not guilty by a jury of his peers. Innocent. He keeps his license.

I'm pretty sure the fictional HCU will be autonomous to some degree since Mariska can't be in every scene of two series at once. I'm sure they will be closely related to allow for introducing characters, probably a backdoor pilot of sorts, and lots of crossovers at first to launch the new show. Of course maybe they will try to get us to believe that they have been in the squad room all along (although given that they have cut back even on the background extras the past few years that would be quite a stretch) so that Dick Wolf won't have to pay for a new set and try to have us believe that they conduct their own investigations and Benson just supervises and handles administration, only getting personally involved when it's a particularly important or high profile case. Because that's just her style. And if Raul was open to returning as a recurring character I'm sure they could find a way to bring him in some other capacity than DA or cop.

I know it's TV, but would Barba still be able to practice law, considering what he admitted to doing?

I think that ship sailed when Novak came back after violating Brady. They could explain it away as he was simply censured or his license was suspended or whatever. Or he could have a new career in the non-profit sector, advocating for victim's rights or against hate, for which he wouldn't need to be a practicing attorney. Or they could use their favorite trick after they write themselves into a corner and he could be diagnosed as bipolar, prescribed meds and announce he is completely cured and return to the DA's office like nothing ever happened...

RE is obviously still open to doing a series since he did that pilot that wasn't picked up.  Isn't he friends with Leight?  I never saw it explicitly stated, but I always thought Leight's departure played a part in RE deciding to leave.  Not to mention, like with Carisi, Leight knew Barba.  18's and 19's showrunners clearly did not, for either character.

If Raúl Esparza ever gets tired of Broadway (probably not likely) I would love to see him as an entirely new suspender-wearing lawyer with a different name on a different show in a practice with Peter Jacobson as Randy Dworkin.

Can NBC be reprimanded for making false (or exaggerated) claims in this trailer for their 20th season?

Is SVU, "TV's Longest Running Hit Drama" and "Most Watched Show In All Of TV"?

I believe they are being deceptive and misleading here!

SVU may end up as the longest running drama (that also is in question), but can it claim to be a hit drama for a long time. What exactly  constitutes a long running hit anyway? Does it have to finish in the top 5 (or top 10) each year? I wonder how much of a donation NBC had to make to Broadcast and Cable (B&C) for them to make the claim SVU is the "Most Watched Show In All Of TV"? I will give B&C credit for setting a certain time period on that. but if I remember right, back in the very early 80's Gilligan's Island and the Brady Bunch were given the same title because of TBS.

Does anyone else find it extremely odd that the episode description for episode 2 (or 3, if you count the 2 hour premiere as 2 episodes) has been released, but not the episode description for the premiere? For some reason, they want viewers to be completely in the dark about the season premiere, it’s very odd.

IMDb doesn't have anything in their (episodes) section concerning the "Man Up, Man Down" episode.  Yet the next episode "Zero Tolerance"is given as "After the rescue of a young girl from a sex trafficker, Benson and Stone must take drastic measures to reunite her with her mother. Meanwhile, Rollins decides to give her rocky relationship another chance." Very Weird?

My remote info button on the premiere only gives "Lt Olivia Benson leads a team that finds justice for victims of the city's worst crimes"

Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T were on with Seth Meyers. I thought it was funny when they talked about the show being a family and they get along, a great work environment. I think if someone complained or had a difference of opinion, they would be off the show so fast.

I don't know how to post articles, but I just read on E! online that Kelli Giddish is indeed pregnant again and (surprise, surprise) the pregnancy will be written into the storyline again.  Well, that confirms why Dr. Al is being introduced.; I think it's a pretty safe assumption that Declan is not the baby daddy for #2.   She has to got to be as dumb as a rock to sleep with someone who cheats on her with prostitutes and not use protection.

More Rollins drama- dear God.

Oy vey.  I can't wait to watch all the Amanda's Baby Drama unfold week after week.  Will Carisi be following Rollins around like a puppy making sure she stays out of harm's way while gestating Blessed One No. 2?  What will she name the baby?  Will it start with a J to match nicely with Jesse?  Will it be a boy or another girl?  How will Dr. Whoremonger react when he hears the wonderful news?  Will Amanda get a new hairdo?  Will Saint Benson throw her a baby shower?  Will there be pregnancy health drama, such as cramps, bleeding, I might lose the baby, I have a sonogram today, can you guys cover for me?  The list goes on and on for plot development all season.  ;)

And this pregnancy is going to be worse because there will be relationship drama added into the pregnancy drama.

Hopefully, Carisi will just wise up and realize that Rollins is a trainwreck that can't be put back on track. Just let it go, Carisi.

Lol...And Rollins is in need serious need of a new 'do.  Fans get all over Mariska for her hair styles over the years, but she just has the same lifeless, aging style. Credit to Mariska on this, but they only look about 5 years apart in age rather than >15 yrs.

Seriously though, I was hoping for some solid storylines requiring good detective and team work with some unexpected twists and less personal drama.  Looks like it might be a long season.

Holy shit, I’m dreading this already. There is absolutely no reason to write Rollins pregnancy into the show, they could hide it and then have her take a couple of episodes off at some point for whatever reason while Giddish gives birth, but the writers cannot get enough of soapy stories involving Benson and Rollins. It’s beyond ridiculous, one accidental pregnancy is believable, but 2 is just absurd, why the fuck isn’t Rollins using protection?

I’m dreading every minute of this, I’m certain Rollins and her doctor baby daddy will take up a boatload of screen time, I’m sure Benson will be heavily involved in this plot as well and will be the one to provide Rollins with advice at every corner, and I have a feeling Carisi will get involved as well, I really wish that Carisi would realize that Rollins is irredeemable trailer trash and an unethical fuck up and do better things with his life than tend to her needs. The only good thing that might come from this is that Rollins will be in the field less at some point in the season and then she will likely take a couple of episodes off, meaning we will get more of Fin and Carisi hopefully for a few episodes.

I think we are in for a painful season to be honest. Between the usual St Olivia saves the world crap, the personal soap with Rollins, and probably a lot of personal soap with Stone as well, I have a feeling Stone is about to get castrated by Benson the way Barba was, I’m very afraid we are going to be in for a long and painful season

I'll bet that they make Carisi the father and hardly take any time to try and explain it, or it might be where they expect the viewer to take it for granted and not explain it at all.

If all this is covered, will they bring back as reoccurring characters Rollins' mother and sister? The actors who portray them do the best they can, but I swear they are the most annoying characters and so badly written. Rollins can intimidate corporate hanchos, major celebrities, and most types of suspects, but she let her sister get a way with crimes and her mother walk all over her. Totally inconsistent and incomprehensible.

If all this happens, will there be a string of 3-5 episodes that will stink because of the "soap opera" factor? I seem to remember a couple of episodes where Rollins looked like she was 8-9 months pregnant, and I thought this was completely absurd.  I wonder if they put this into the story line to show that pregnant women are still capable of working up until the moment of delivery. I applaud them for that, but let's be honest. Most pregnant women with a higher than normal stressful job (especially a detective) would probably be taking off work for the last couple months of their pregnancy.

Please don’t bring Rollins trailer trash family back, I believe I would rather see Noah than them. I am pissed that the writers feel the need to write Rollins pregnancy into the show, this show is more of a soap opera about Benson, Rollins and their brats and boyfriends than it is a crime show. Rollins is an unethical trainwreck and an awful detective, I’m sick of her being the number 2 detective behind Benson, Fin and Carisi are much better and more interesting characters. Please don’t drag Carisi into Rollins personal crap, he should have much better things to do with his life than clean up after Rollins endless fuck ups and act as her maid.

And not only will the Rollins soap take up a ton of time, apparently we are in for a lot of Stone soap as well. I have a feeling we will see a lot of Stone having personal trouble just so Benson can save him and he can then show his gratitude by becoming her puppet the way Barba was. I wish it would be the new psych expert that Stone would talk to (I am happy to have a new psych expert) but everything has to revolve around Benson so I guarantee this will as well.

  • Love 3

I do like that they are getting a new psych expert.  When Dr. Huang was still a part of the cast, his expertise just fleshed out storylines.  It makes me miss BD Wong; he was phenomenal in the role.  I am a little worried that they will use the character only to help Stone with his grief.  The extent of his grief seems a little strange since he wasn't a big part of his sister' life until her last months; my guess is that it is another step into the deeper abyss known as personal drama for characters.

Rollins' baby/boyfriend drama is going to be front and center this season.  I feel it in my bones. The photos that were released in advance of the 2-hr premiere significantly featured Rollins with Dr. Al, with her 1st kid, receiving support from Fin and Benson.  The synopsis of the next episode mentions Rollins' decision to give it another try with the prostitute-loving Dr.  Considering how well she dealt with him cheating on her last season, it's just not going to be pretty when things go bad again.  Especially if he is the baby daddy, and I think it is a safe assumption that he is.

I agree that Fin and Carisi are the more professional and ethical detectives of the unit, although they both had moments when they derailed last season.  They both need to be featured more prominently in their detective roles.  How they have handled the glimpses into their personal lives is the way it should be done for both Benson and Rollins. Those little glimpses make us care about the characters but we don't feel like we are beaten over the heads with their personal lives.

I don't know why I'm asking.
Reading the last few posts is preparing me to watch while multitasking so I can ignore the soap parts.
Whatever happened to pregnant actors hiding behind grocery bags and potted plants (e.g., Elaine Benes/Julia Louis-Dreyfus)?
I think that realistically conveys to the audience that a woman can work late into her pregnancy more than having a 9-month pregnant, crime fighting, fictional character.
I thought Bones did a pretty good job of showing pregnant actors depicting pregnant characters, but Bones and Angela didn't have jobs that required physically pursuing violent suspects (although Bones may have done a bit of that anyway).

I miss Huang as well, and I’ve always loved the psych experts and what they bring to the show, I’m excited to have a new one and I hope she helps SVU with the cases as well as helping Peter, a psych expert is something SVU needs frequently, I hope she fills the void left by Huang, the way Olivet did a couple of times last season.

Carisi won’t be the baby daddy, even SVU wouldn’t go full on soap like that, Dr Al is definitely the baby daddy, that’s why he’s back in Rollins’ life, and I’m dreading every minute of it. Things will inevitably go bad with him, he’s either going to wind up being a perp or cheat on Rollins again, and the viewers are going to be subjected to half a season of this crap, the way we had Granny Sheila drama shoved down our throats last season.

I want more of Fin and Carisi, they are far better detectives and much more interesting than Benson and Rollins, but Benson and Rollins get shoved down our throats because the writers seem to want to hammer in the point that women can do everything, and of course Mariska becoming an executive producer has been the main reason why the show is all Benson.

Is anyone else afraid Stone is about to become Barba 2.0, a puppet for Benson who bows to her every wish? That’s what I’m afraid this season has in store for Stone, he will become soft and weak in the wake of his sister’s death and will turn into a Benson puppet.

Going on the premise that this might be the last season, do you think they might write in a happy ending for Rollins and her two kids? That she suddenly realizes how important Carisi is to her and she professes her love for him. He responds by telling Rollins of his secret love for her and they end up getting married.

Oh this will not be the last season, they are determined to get to 21 and the record. Either way, I certainly do NOT want to see a Rollins/Carisi romance, Carisi’s life shouldn’t revolve around Rollins, she’s an unethical trailer trash fuck up. But I’m concerned they will go that route since the writers love building up Rollins and they love soap stories.

On an unrelated note, we finally got an episode description for the premiere, it sounds very interesting, we will have a male rape victim which is rare for SVU. I hope the season premiere focuses on the case though, and not the personal drama of Benson, Rollins and Stone.

More importantly from a storytelling/viewer standpoint is that on Bones they weren't dealing with characters where the writing of their personal and romantic lives had gone so off the rails that it required essentially a reboot. That is why it completely mystifies me that they are going this way. I'm wondering if this is one of those areas where MC isn't completely familiar with and is going with what is being pushed my Mariska, Kelli, Julie Martin, etc.?  Because I can't understand why a talented writer who was reeled in so many of the show's worst tendencies is now indulging in them, and spending the all too limited casting budget on a recurring character to do so. I would prefer her to see her personal life pretty much ignored, left to the occasional reference to a night out and whatever the Rollisi fanfic writers come up with.

I feel like there is still sort of a power struggle going on between Churnuchin and Mariska and as a result the show is very mixed. We’ve gotten much more interesting stories since Churnuchin has taken over, a lot fewer he said/she said rapes and a lot more variety of cases and people involved, but Mariska still holds a ton of power and so the writers have to bow to a lot of her wishes, and that’s why we get so much focus on Benson.

I really don’t know why they are writing Rollins pregnancy into the show, do they not realize how absurd it is for Rollins to now have 2 accidental babies with 2 baby daddies?! Even for the endless trainwreck that is Rollins, it seems absurd. They could easily hide Giddish’s pregnancy, plenty of other shows have done it, but for some reason the show loves baby drama.

Maybe they are pushing the idea that women should just have babies with no marriage and whoever gets them pregnant is of no concern since being a mother is the empowerment that comes with having a full-time career and not being a stay-at-home mom.
