Yes, yes, and no.

Top 3: how very season 10, with Maddie in place of Hailey. Maddie may have more of a chance than Hailey did, by virtue of her rather placid, pleasant personality and performing style/genre.

Disney should be very happy with any of these as winners, but I suspect they'd loooove Gabby.

Isn't next week 2 shows....Sunday and Monday?

Yes it is.  The Sunday show is 8-10pm.  The Monday finale results show is from 9-11pm (thanks to Dancing with the Stars)

I'm guessing there are three songs next week, usually there is a producer pick, a judges pick and a reprise.  But they also have to do the coronation song, right?  Since it's a two hour show, they might be able to get all four of those in (since in other Idol years, the top 3 episode was only a one-hour episode).  But if I can make a suggestion, I really hope they skip the reprises and each of them sings an original song - they all have a bunch of them (for that matter Caleb and Maddie have full EPs of original material out now on ITunes)

By the way I like how seemingly everyone here was pleasantly surprised that Maddie got through (and me too).  But I think she got all of Catie's former voters and Cade's vocals have been subpar the last few weeks, so it makes sense.  My odds of winning right now are Caleb 45%, Gabby 35% Maddie 20%, based on entirely nothing.

I know that lots of people were not fans of the previous judging panel (and a lot of people really disliked Harry especially) but I really enjoyed the way that Keith, J-Lo and Harry played off of each other. Harry did often dominate the room in a borderline obnoxious way but I always felt like he was offering serious constructive criticism that could help the contestants even if he was a bit self-indulgent with it. J-Lo was not great when she first started out but by the end I really thought she was useful on the panel most nights and that she worked really well with Harry and Keith especially. And while she always dressed in a way that made it clear she was wanting to be noticed, I felt like she'd have her moment when the judges were introduced and then she would get down to business and the rest of the night was about the contestants. Katy never gets to that point. The entire night is about her. It is obnoxious. I wonder how a Lionel/J-Lo/Harry panel would have gone.

I did like the previous judges.  Yes, Harry could be obnoxious, but you can't beat his musical knowledge.  The other two were fine with me, also.  This year's crop is not really a judging panel, I don't know what their function is.  I wish they would give some constructive criticism.

She also doesn't have JLO and Randy there steamrolling her under the bus like Haley did.

I remember, back in the day, seeing Alan Jackson open for Garth Brooks at the MN State Fair.  He just stood at the mic and sang.  Boring.  He wasnt big yet.  Caleb reminds me of him.  Stiff and in one lane.  I think Caleb can make it big.  He has to learn how to be a star.  Gabby and Maddie have the star quality already.  Caleb needs to learn it.

I saw Carrie at Casino Rama right after she won. That's exactly what she did too - stood there and sang.  She would say probably one sentence in between each song.

I would be fine with a Maddie or Caleb win.  Both seem very humble and have been consistent.  Yes, Gabby has been consistent as well but she seems too manufactured and calculating in her performances.  Maddie made me tear up singing to her mother.

I am guessing Cade must be super pretty IRL because he had Carrie and Idina acting a bit flustered.

I am kind of obsessed with Maddie's make-up.  Kudos to whoever is doing it.

I am sad to see Michael go.....he was such a sweetheart of a kid.  I hope he goes on to have a big career.

JMO, but with this judging panel ABC (thinks) it's reaching across all potential demographics.  Katy's there to capture the teen/pop-rock crowd, Luke is there for the country demo and they're hoping (more like grasping at straws) with Lionel to reach to the Boomer population.

Where I work the majority of our staff are millennials.  Our office is located in a more "rural" part of the state and country music is the only music around here.  As a Boomer I enjoy listening to their opinions on everything from clothing styles to music.  When AI started with the auditions I asked my co-workers if any of them had watched and who they liked.  The few that had (two out of thirty) liked the contestants that "surprise" sang country music.  They did ask me why that "old guy with the Afro" was there. They had no clue who Lionel Ritchie (or the Commodores) were.  Yep, it's time for me to officially stamp my "old" card I guess.

Aaaaagh!

One way to get young people to listen to "older" music - I had a Marvin Gaye CD in my car, which my teen daughter used to borrow.  She told me her friends liked my music.  She listens to "Soul Town" on XM radio in her car now.  Mission accomplished!  LOL

I'll start this by stating that I've never liked Carrie Underwood, and last night was no exception.  She was pretty much useless as a mentor, and her performance sucked.  And most of her songs are awful.  I almost wish it was Disney night again - that might've been an improvement.

On to the contestants:

Michael #1 - poor enunciation really stood out, but was in key and had decent energy

Gabby #1 - spunky suits her better than belty, her energy was good and she sounded good

Cade #1 - okay, so one of the few CU songs I don't hate, this was better in Cade's upper register, was pretty rough in his lower register, you can really tell he hasn't had any vocal training; still has star presence, though

Caleb #1 - song was drippy as hell but his voice sounded really good except for a little heavy vibrato at the end

Maddie #1 - belting doesn't suit her voice, I could hear her straining a bit in the high notes, not up to her usual standard

Gabby #2 - and now she's back to Carriebot mode, ugh, although she mostly sounded pretty good

Cade #2 - vocally not perfect (see above about training), but the song suited his voice much better, it was kinda raw and unpolished but there was good tone there

Michael #2 - Simon would've called this performance indulgent, and also called out the many problems with the vocal, plus - where would Michael even fit in today's radio scene?

Caleb #2 - this song was much better for him than the CU one, and he's clearly more comfortable with his guitar, vocally a great performance

Maddie #2 - THIS is the kind of performance I expect from her, vocally solid and gorgeous in her upper register, plus you could hear her emotion in a good way

I'd have subbed Cade for Gabby, but when it came down to him, Michael and Maddie, I wanted Maddie to go through.  She's my pick to win it.  It's interesting that the three contestants with the most radio-ready voices and styles are the final three.

Yes, Gabby has been consistent as well but she seems too manufactured and calculating in her performances.

Carrie had some good advice to Maddie that she should have given to Gabby. Maddie was trying out different phrasing and Carrie warned her that if you practice and tweak a song too much, you tend to lose the connection.  Gabby does that. Plus, Gabby has to find her own unique way of singing. Country music already has Carrie Underwood, they don't need an imitation. She needs to bring something new to the table and stop mimicking.

Quote

Remember when Kat McPhee's mom was a vocal coach on here and we got to see some of that?

I saw her in the credits last week. She's still a vocal coach. I would like to see more of the process and wouldn't mind seeing the artists working with the behind the scene teams. That might help with the impression that these kids aren't getting any feedback. Michael Orland can growl at them a bit and the vocal coaches can try to fix annoying vocal issues.

Quote

Carrie Underwood this time, who just happens to have a new album

Carrie Underwood has a new single out. The album isn't dropping until September and most people will have long forgotten this episode by then. I'm not a Carrie fan, but I do like it when the alumni come back to the show. They bring a perspective that non-alumni cannot. Plus, I like it when the show supports past contestants (they should have trimmed some useless judging time to let Trent sing his song - he does have a new album coming out this week. Goodness knows these judges have nothing novel to say about any given performance).

I felt Maddie won the night and I surprised myself by liking Cade (who I have been wishing he would go home for weeks). The "Mom" theme worked better than the "Carrie" theme.

When contestants leave, I always wonder where the votes will go (fans of the show may still vote, but die-hard fans of the contestant might stop voting). I think that Caleb will pick up votes from people who vote for WGWG and Maddie will pick up those who don't want to vote Country. Sometimes, being a friend of an eliminated contestant can get you their votes, but I don't think that works if you are the girlfriend, so I think Gabby is out of luck picking up votes there. Michael's votes  will probably go mostly to Maddie (again, non-country, little quirky) with some to Gabby (because she does some big-voiced singing). I think these eliminations help Maddie the most and Gabby the least.

When Caleb or Maddie is announced to make it through, they hug the person next to them. Gabby just runs to safety. She might want to re-think that.  You need the audience to love you just not as an artist, but also as a person. While it can be tough to school your behavior during high anxiety times, it helps if you do.

Boomer here as well.  As a suburban New Yorker, coming of age in the 70s I  grooved to Lionel and the Commodores. And who can forget his duet, "Endless Love?"  Huge, huge hit and many couples chose it as their wedding song (including my sister). I know plenty of folks around these parts who are country music fans, but it's not something I ever gravitated towards.  Chicago, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, CCR, Jefferson Starship,  most of the 70s groups (except hard rock) James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Hall and Oates  and my favorite artist of that era, Stevie Wonder....these artists were my jam.

Good to know about Mom McPhee!

I wonder if ABC has no stake in prior idols’ successes so will ignore any like Trent who don’t further their brand (like Carrie)?

Idol doesn’t need to woo baby boomers.  The show has had an older viewership for some time now.

Yup. I have noticed it every single week and it is really unbecoming. There was one week when they sent home a bunch of people at once and the camera caught her giddily dancing while virtually everyone else was in a big group hug center stage. She caught herself and did make her way over to the rest of the group but it made her look rather unfeeling.

Yeah, I noticed that too.  And isn't Cade supposed to be her boyfriend now?  He tried to hug her or put his arm around her and she just ignored him - and everyone else back there with her - and bolted onto center stage.  Even if she had to fake it (which now I see she obviously would), she should have at least feigned surprise and hugged her fellow contestants.  But no, she ran for the spotlight....far away from those potential losers.  She rubs me the wrong way, needless to say.

It was interesting to see the difference in the hometown homecoming concerts. Gaby is performing at a Riverfront Concert venue, Maddie at the country fairgrounds and Caleb on the courthouse steps.  I wonder if AI sets these up? Caleb on the courthouse steps confuses me. I think Gaby will have the star treatment with fireworks off of boats in the river behind her and Maddie will be shown signing autographs with young fans at the fair.

I'm a numbers nerd, I looked at different sites with odds for winning. I feel ABC wants Gaby to win but my gut thinks Caleb might win. He is the only male, he has the country vote , and I was surprised I talked to a few people voting for him because of his weight loss journey.  Of course 3/4 of our family is rooting for Maddie.

Just to add my 2 cents:  I think Gabby irks so many people because she gives off a sense of (as has been mentioned) arrogance.  Self-confidence is one thing, but she exudes a kind of 'entitlement' vibe, without any humility.  I don't know how else to describe my reaction to her.  (Sort of like how Luke can't seem to find the words to critique half the contestants).   I think she has a good voice and she's certainly not bashful onstage, but it somehow comes off as an imitation of how she thinks a star would perform.  Let me amend that:  She acts like she's already a star (she's not - yet), which is something that Carrie did not do in her year, even though she was running away with the votes, or so I read.

She reminds me of Jax from season 14.

Why, oh why was Katy dressed like Cher from her “Sonny & Cher” days? Yes, I am old.

I’m glad to see Maddie in the final. I would have traded Gabby (whose too-shrill singing voice hits me like nails on a blackboard) for Michael (who bores me as a performer but at least I don’t hit the mute button every time).

I was just going to comment how nice it was for Cher to be a guest judge.  Lol.  Right down to that Bob Mackie style dress.

I also agree with the testifying post.

and I am also old.  ?

I'm from Iowa so am excited to have an Iowa girl do well.  But she would be my favorite by far, no matter where she was from, even if all the others were from Iowa.

So next week is the big finale?  I'm fine with the final three but again will be viewing via DVR.  I can't imagine how many commercials/fluff/useless judge comments they'll have trying to fill up two more hours, when due to the new voting process the "winner" will be decided more than likely by mid-show.

I probably FF through this, but is AI coming back next season?   Will they have the same spineless judges?  Hoping that if ABC does bring it back that they revert back to their original format.    Otherwise I probably won't find it interesting enough for it to take up space on my DVR.

Since they actually have a finale show slated for Monday (right after DWTS), I don't think they'll do the "live from Eastport to Kauai" thing again; they'll just let each timezone vote normally and have the big reveal on Monday night.

And yes, the show has been renewed with the same judges.

I'm glad that Maddie and Gabby got through, but would have preferred Michael to Caleb.  Maddie has been the overall best all season, while Gabby really stepped it up last night, cementing her place as the second best for me.  I find that Caleb is simply too limited in what he can do well.  Too bad he's likely going to win.

I've seen her in concert 9 or 10 times. She puts on a great show, sings her lungs out and costume changes are at a minimum :)

I thought she was a pretty good mentor. I still wish those "judges" would actually give some constructive criticism though.

Finally got around to watching and am ok with the final three though I would have preferred Michael to Gabby.  She has the pipes but is just too karaoke for me.  Michael could do very well in musical theatre but he will have to learn to enunciate.  The mushy lyric thing will not cut it on the stage.

I was worried about Maddie.  It wasn't her best night for sure but I'm glad it was good enough to keep her in it.  "God Only Knows" is almost untouchable in my world and doesn't lend itself to a solo, but she managed to pull it off.

Caleb is so likable and I think his Mom song did it for him tonight.

I'd love for Maddie to win but logic tells me it will be Gabby which will be a shame because country music already has Carrie.  I don't quite know where she'll fit in on the Nashville scene.

I liked Anwar Robinson and then rooted for Bo Bice when Anwar was eliminated).

Me too. That was the only season my husband watched because of Anwar and he refused to watch after Anwar was eliminated.  I loved Bo.  His "In A Dream" is still one of the best things I've ever heard on AI.

Not sure I'll watch next season.  It's all too rushed, the voting system is suspect and the judges are useless.

I thought Katy looked like a silly mixture of 70's Cher and Vampira.

Again, watching on Hulu, so I am pausing after the first round this time to give first round thoughts...

First, the judges said they were going to give harder critiques, but then they did the same thing they always do, which is to not really give any helpful critiques, <eye roll>.

Second, Cade and Michael can both be gone right now, please.

Third, all that drama about Carrie's injury and scar, but I can't see why it was such a big deal-you can't even see it.

Now, for the actual performances...

Michael-As I said above, he should be gone tonight. I just can't anymore with his enunciation issues.

Gabby-Holy crap, she looks like Carrie Jr., but I didn't really care for her rendition of the song.

Cade-For the first time, I thought his vocals weren't bad, but it's still time for him to go.

Caleb-As much as I like him, I didn't care for this performance.

Maddie-As with Caleb, I really like her, but not her best work.

Man, I sound really negative and snarky, but none of them wowed me with the first performance tonight. Hopefully the second round is better!

  • Love 2
Link to comment

Ok, second round...

Was better than the first.

Gabby-Did a good job on an incredibly difficult song.

Cade-Why did he wait until tonight to let us hear how he can sing without the growl? This was the best I've heard from him, imo, but it was still his time to go.

Michael-Why was he the only one to read his own letter, rather than letting his mom read it like the others did? Better than the first performance, but still not good enough to stay.

Caleb-That boy is country to the bone, and I love it. Lionel (and Luke, at some point I think) called it when he said that Caleb has an immediately identifiable voice.

Maddie-Interesting that she got the "pimp spot" twice, is she now the chosen one? Good job on the song, and I liked that we could see her emotions come through.

Luke not being able to let go of his mom, and how he kept hugging her gave me all the feels!

America, in my opinion, got the top three right.

I hope that either Caleb or Maddie wins, but regardless of what happens next week, I think they will both have careers/find their niche in the music industry.

I think Caleb’s humor and adorableness are probably big hits with the old Idol viewers and we’ll have another WGWG.

But Gabby is pretty appealing, too.  I could see her pulling off an upset

I’m pretty sure Maddie will be third.  I’d listen to her over the others because she’s more my taste but I think she’s not going to be the voters’ pick.  Hope I’m wrong just for variety, though.  But I’m fine with any of these three, too.

I missed the first half of the show last night so I just caught up. I was expecting it to be less than great according to many posts but I have to disagree with some of them. I really thought Cade did a decent job with "Undo It" and I loved Maddie's version of  "I Told You So". To me she stayed close enough to the original but put her own Maddie flavor to it also. Contrast that to Gabby who did a good job but pretty much did a imitation of Carrie. Nothing new. Michael and Caleb did the "worst" if you want to call it that but their's wasn't terrible.

Combining the second performance for an all around effort I think that Gabby's was a solid technically good showing, just nothing original. Michael's was ok but not as good as we've seen from him in the past. Cade did a decent job with both songs IMO but too late in the game for him to compete with the much better vocal talent. Caleb more than made up for his poor showing in the first round with his great song choice in the second.

So down to Maddie and I have to say she has been the most consistent throughout the competition and tonight was no exception. She will probably not win but it will be a shame if this girl doesn't get a recording contact following this. I love her arrangements, her voice and her persona. I think she is ready now to make lovely music. I can imagine her on the radio now and doing duets with the likes of Ed Sheeran.

My thoughts also. I know Ryan says the results are in no particular order but I have to wonder. If we were to go by order called then Caleb is most definitely the winner. IIRC he's been called first for the last 4 to 5 times. Anyone else notice that?

Best guess:  Kacey Musgraves was rocking long straight hair and some fashions that wouldn't have raised an eyebrow in 1974 on Saturday Night Live last night, so Katy thought she could pull off a similar look--or it's a fashion trend that hasn't caught up to my understanding yet--or both is possible.

From 2015, I found a age viewer detailed chart for Idol.

The 2 biggest viewing blocks kids 14-21 and adults 30-59.  Both groups had approx the same number of viewership for the old Idol.

Now which of those groups will be more inclined to cast votes in the current format under the assumption that the percentages are still true this year?  I would think the younger age groups.

And I know from my daughter's college, they have watching parties Sunday evening with hundreds in attendance all max voting for their favorites.

I will be happy as long as Caleb does not win.  He will get a nice country career.  Gabby will get a nice country career and some producer will work with her to define her own voice.

I want Maddie to win.  When they all sang with Carrie at the beginning, you got a comparison of Gabby vs Maddie singing versus right after each other and Maddie sounded better to my ears.

I can see Gabby or Caleb opening for Luke in a year.  Not sure where Maddie fits in musically where she can be a star, but I'd pay to hear her sing.

I like Carrie.....not a huge fan, but I did see her in concert last year and she was good. I know she had that accident, but I thought her face looked really different. I was wondering if it was from the plastic surgery she had due to her fall, or if she botoxed her lips?

Ha! I prefer not to see anything related to anyone in that clan, thanks. But yeah, maybe. For me it wasn’t just the hair - it was the wig combined with that outfit that looked like it came straight out of Cher’s 1970’s dressing room.

Not Botox. She had 40-50 stitches put in, quite a mess. She warned people while she was healing that she would look different.

I saw Carrie live a few years ago.  She has become much more of an entertainer.  However, she stopped being a country singer awhile back-- so I'm not thrilled with most of her songs these days.

I like Maddie, Gabby, and Caleb equally, so I'm fine with whichever one wins. I honestly think the other two will have a chance at success because they're too good to pass up. Cade has a good rocker voice, but he can't sing anything outside of a narrow range. Hopefully, getting this far will open up something for him.

I was streaming the show last night & got so bored that I turned it off after the first set of songs. I'm not a Carrie Underwood fan and couldn't tell if it was the singing or the songs, but it just wasn't interesting enough to waste good bandwidth on.

This is exactly why I don't like her. Her lack of humility coupled with her arrogance is too much for me. And yes @kili I agree how your persona comes across, whether good or bad, has a lot to do with your success. I know artists that although I like their music ok I don't like them. Which makes me less than enthused to buy their music.

I predicted weeks ago @Ladyrain that she would leave Cade behind in the dust if she got in the finale and he didn't. He himself stated to a reporter when asked about her that he "adored" her. No doubt he boosted her ego even more but now that she has surpassed him she doesn't need him anymore. Or so it seems to me. Oh well they say pain and life experiences make for good songwriting so maybe Cade can channel his efforts that way.

I won't be mad if she wins but I will be disappointed. And she probably will. Or I will be surprised if she doesn't. I'm not that crazy about her voice,  but I really don't like her, so I won't be buying any of her music if she does.

Maddie is so obviously the most talented of the finalists, which means she won't win. I expect Postmodern Jukebox has a place waiting for her.

Postmodern Jukebox would be a great fit for Maddie.  I have been thinking she is the Melinda Doolittle of this season -- too talented to actually win.

Melinda Doolittle was amazing. Even Simon was smitten.

They did ask me why that "old guy with the Afro" was there. They had no clue who Lionel Ritchie (or the Commodores) were.  Yep, it's time for me to officially stamp my "old" card I guess.

Didn't you tell them that Lionel did a country album recently? ;D

I flove Postmodern Jukebox, but isn't Maddie too much of a folkie for them?    I love Maddie because of her sincerity...she's likable and lovable.

But then, for Post Juke maybe she cd do 60's songs from British pop like Petula Clark or Lulu--To Sir with Love, or American Dionne Warwick......IDK.   I could see her rock a Carnaby Street mod fashion cap and gogo boots.  Or a flower child vibe like Melanie...who sang the rollerskates and key song.  Didn't she wear overalls?

I think Caleb might win which Im ok with,  because I don't want Maddie ruined by the AI machine.

I want Gabby to go away and develop a unique look/sound more age appropriate. Or just go away.
