The Purge - General Discussion

Glad that Penelope and Miguel made it, and are now driving a Purge med cart, where they can help people while not being Purged on. Penelope really grew on me, especially this episode, where she was quite the badass. It really sucks that Jane died, and I was even sorry to see Rick bite it in the end. He was a bit of a cynical dick, but he did love his family, and never fully went dark side like I thought would happen at first. I was also happy that Pete the Cop was alright, he and Miguel bonding was weirdly sweet.

Joe suddenly flipping and being all friendly to Miguel and Penelope as soon as the siren went off was darkly hilarious. Its amazing Joe could keep that much crazy locked up for a year, the dude was seriously twisted.

So, where does this show take place within the Purge universe?

Spoiler

Because in one of the recent Purge movies, the new president made the Purge illegal. So how many more Purges will there actually be?

I was hoping that we'd see Jane with the Matron of Saints at the end.

Joe not realizing that threatening someone even after the purge ended was a stupid move was typical to his character. Of course Miguel killed him. Who wouldn't? It was funny how he thought everything would be okay once the siren went off.

I hope that next season we see Jane and I hope we see what happens after the purge ends.

I stopped watching after Jane was murdered.  I won’t watch next season.  This is yet another show that hates black women.  So fuck this show.  I wouldn’t even watch a bootleg version.

Agreed, killing Jane and letting Penelope and the reproducing half of the vapid couple live was a huge narrative mistake.  I was hoping Jane survived, from what I've read she didnt so I'm not watching this episode. It doesn't sound like I missed much.

Yes, yes yes.  This show pulled the bait and switch shit, that often happens with black women on TV (I'm looking at Person of Interest/Sleepy Hollow); they'll kill off a black woman but say, "hey, it's okay, we've got another WOC here, see."  As if they're interchangeable.  I don't get how they can kill off the best and most interesting character on the show and still expect people to watch.  If I was an executive at USA, I would have told them to go back into the writing room and come up with a better ending.

While disappointed that Jane didn't survive I was still rather happy with the finale of the season.  (Yay to getting a second season).  I really liked how all the storylines progressed and how the show ended especially Penelope's storyline.  Going from someone who thought she had to die to help purgers to someone who was willing to save the purged upon.   I am really glad Penelope survived to the end.

The only storyline that really disappointed in the end was Jenna, her husband, and Lila that storyline was the most disappointing.  I know people will hate that Jane dies and Penelope survives but that is essentially her storyline.  Its a survival storyline.  While Jenna and her husband were just outright boring until the end.  If any death disappointed me it would be Lila.

Again disappointed that Jane died but I get her death.  She was in alot of ways like Joe.   Someone who thought purge night would fix her problems only to have it not be what she thought or go how she wanted it to.

I'm really looking forward to Season 2. It looks like Penelope and Miguel will be back and probably Pete. It would be great to see all three return. I doubt Jenna would have anything to do in a new season since she is out of the country. No one else to return since everyone else basically died. Maybe the group of women who saved Jane would appear. Season one ends as the next purge a year later begins. So season two would cover the events of this new purge night with Miguel and Penelope doing their thing, Pete's Cantina serving as a sanctuary and a host of new characters and stories as well. Hopefully the new season comes sooner and we don't have to wait until all the way to September, 2019!!

I haven't watched the last episode, and I'm not that happy that it got a second season. I thought it was supposed to be a limited series "event". Like the Handmaid's Tale - I didn't watch all of the second season, because it was just too much. I haven't seen all of the purge movies, though - I thought the first one was a good concept, and watched the third one (?) when mum was in the hospital, just a few days before she died. I saw it somewhere online, where the political candidate is being hunted.

I kept going with season 2 of Handmaid's Tale, but I recognize at this point that the series has already moved beyond the book and is now its own thing.  I did like the conclusion of The Purge, some good moments with the shootouts and the bolt in the eye socket part.  And of course Miguel wasn't going to let Joe walk away after what he did and promising he was going to come after them again lol.  Rick was the worst of the main characters, weak to the end.  If a psycho is threatening to kill my wife and unborn baby I'm not going to sit there and hope for the best, I'm jumping on the guy.  I like Pete because I have always liked the actor, going back to Nurse Jackie.  He was also in Goliath as a corrupt cop.  Miguel is a one note snore of a character, but Penelope has the potential to be a fun action character.  She and Pete are the two reasons really to give season 2 a try.  Jenna on the run in Europe doesn't interest me.  The show will work if they just keep it to dumb action and minimize the moralizing.  We all know that the Purge is a monstrously inhumane concept best left to nightmares.

Handmaid's Tale, the torture porn was just too much - and that's basically what The Purge feels like to me, when they keep going with new movies. Like "The Strangers", too. I watched a movie like that with Milo Ventimiglia, on Amazon, but that had something in it that I really didn't expect (but have seen before, in another movie, years ago). I've just really gone off certain types of movies/shows in the last year or so. I'm not enjoying AHS, either. I thought the show (Purge) would do more than feature the usual violence, as others have mentioned. Show us how it started, the day and weeks after. Show us people dealing with what they've done, having to live with no legal consequences, but there are surely others, after murdering, raping, etc. And I doubt that everyone waits until purge night to get their own justice.

Jane was the best character, and I knew that Penelope and her brother would survive. I'll have to watch this episode, just to see what Jenna is doing in Europe. Or just find a recap.

I knew I recognized Pete from something else. Goliath - loved it.

I'm with you there. The moment they announced that Jenna was pregnant I knew that she was safe, but out of the three I was hoping she's die. Lila was somewhat complex and even though Rick was punchable, I did sympathize that he was probably someone who has seen some messed up stuff and tried to be better because of it. Jenna was just pregnant and lead both on, while having an air of superiority over the other two.

The second purge movie is the best one, but I'm with you on the Handmaid's Tale. The second season felt like boring torture open and I don't think the writers knew where to take the story. I think the Purge has a better chance, since there no book to base it on, but we'll see.

Here are the list of factoids they would show during the bumpers.

Purge Factoids

During the third episode, the American broadcaster of the series "USA Network" released these factoids about the Purge series by way of interstitial programming or bumpers.

Transcription of Factoids:

This season of The Purge takes place between the first and second films, exactly 10 years after the First Purge.

The Purge commences every year at 7pm on March 21st - a day before the first day of spring, the season of rebirth and renewal.

Blue Baptisia flowers - native to North America, resilient to death and toxic are the official flowers of The Purge.

OMF or "Original Martyr Family" refers to citizens who were on Staten Island during the First Purge.

In the world of The Purge, murder tourism is on the rise with people from all over the world looking to participate in the American holiday.

Now an iconic symbol in the world of The Purge, masks were worn on Purge Night to conceal a participant's identity.

In the world of The Purge, March 22nd is the busiest day of the year for hospitals and cell towers are overloaded with calls for loved ones.

The Matron Saints were founded by Mary Sandin, in response to the trauma her family suffered in The Purge (2013)

The red arm band wearing Anti-NFFA group is the precursor to Carmelo Johns' faction seen in Purge:Anarchy.

In the World of The Purge, travelling from the east coast to west coast on Purge Night will get you 3 more hours to Purge.

The show was shot on location in New Orleans, LA , but takes place in Anytown, USA

The 28th Amendment, ratified in 2018, turned The Purge into a nation-wide law.

In the world of The Purge, all emergency services are suspended. An unwritten law protects triage van drivers on Purge Night.

In the world of The Purge, the sale of high-tech security systems, panic rooms and firearms have seen remarkable growth.

Data, in the world of The Purge, has shown that three women are harmed for every man. The Matron Saints called this "Gender-cide."

In the world of The Purge, Purge Night insurance is the most expensive insurance currently on the market.

Pete's Cantina, inspired by Prohibition-era underground speakeasies, forbids violence of any kind on Purge Night.

In the world of The Purge, children under the age of 18 are prohibited from participating in the annual holiday.

High-ranking government officials were exempt from The Purge until the NFFA wanted to target an anti-NFFA Senator (Purge: Election Year)

Moreover, by the fifth episode, an exact date can be fixed, where these events are transpiring:

The timestamp on the security camera footage from the residence of David Ryker indicates that it is March 22, 2027 12:07 AM

Murder tourism? Ugh.

Didn't Lila's family do something illegal, then, with her purging the night before her birthday? I guess since they're in charge, they can get away with it. Still, it's a really disgusting rite of passage.

This season was stupid, not on the level of The Walking Dead, Season 1-4, but pretty stupid. I can't believe that after everything Jane went through, they killed her off in the penultimate episode. Joe's arc as vengeful white guy was dumb (though as others mentioned funny when the sirens went off) and wasted. The "rich" couple, we all knew Jenna wasn't going to die. Miguel and Penelope, meh. And I can not get over the Carnival of Flesh bothering to track Miguel down. How did they even know who he was? They already had Henry(?)'s money, dump his ass with the rest of the bodies and no one knows the difference!

This is shaggy dog story at it's worst. Jane and David are dead, so everything relating to their story doesn't matter. The Stantins and Rick are dead, so Jenna's story doesn't matter (for emphasis, Jenna ended up in France, which is considering the purge) and the rebels story didn't matter. Miguel and Penelope live and are heading out into the purge to save people, so yay? I honestly didn't care for these two and actively hoped Penelope would die. And Joe's dead and his whole purpose was ultimately kill Rick and Jane. I feel like the series would be better served with Jane surviving, the Purge ending on the second to last episode, and then an episode dedicated to the after (what happened to the rebels when the Stantins are found dead, what happened to Alison, how has the company changed after losing David, so on and so forth.

As far as I'm concerned this was far better than The Mist (I dropped after the first three episodes) but must see TV it ain't. Maybe the second season will improve since the writers have some feedback available.

I'm watching The Purge: Anarchy, and wondering if real estate agents still have to disclose when a murder has taken place in a home they're trying to sell.

It also started me thinking again, of what I would do if purge night existed. If you had a safe place to go, you might be tempted to take others (I know that I would), but you never know who might be holding the tiniest grudge, or a sociopath in disguise.

The first two movies are on the FX Now app, that I downloaded for some reason (can't remember why, but it came in handy when I was stuck somewhere).

I am trying to re-watch the season on demand, but my Spectrum on demand for this show has never included episode 9 from The Purge. It wasn't even added right after it showed and it hasn't been added since. Episodes 1-8 and 10 are there, but no Episode 9. Has anyone else experienced this? Very strange.

This is the kind of show where I do enjoy watching the episodes multiple times. There are some little things that I pick up when seeing the episodes multiple times.

If Purge night existed, I would leave the country. Even if I had to save all year and could just go to a motel on the other side of the border in Canada or Mexico,  I'd do it. I'm surprised that the rich people in this show never seem to do this, and instead lock themselves inside their homes and hope for the best. Although my natural next thought is, what if you were planning to fly to another country or continent on the last flight out before Purge, and your flight was delayed? And if there is murder tourism, all the people coming in on the final flights into the country before Purge night would be people who want to kill someone. So now I have Purge: Flight Delay of Death in my head. Thanks for that, show.

Season 2 looks like what everyone has been asking since basically the first movie aired.  What happens during the rest of the year?  Can a guy who almost gets purged just move on with his life?   What happens to the people who lose a family member?  Or to to the psyche of someone who purges an enemy?   What does the world look like when all crime isn’t legal?

I am really looking forward to finding out.

I meant to answer this a long time ago.  Anyway.  The movies even from the beginning hinted at the economy Purge Night brought.   The first Purge movie was a home invasion movie set in the home of a wealthy salesman who sold Purge Night Security Systems.    The rest of the movies and the series continued with the theme.  The wealthy had safeguards protecting themselves from Purge Night.  The middle class protected themselves as best they could.  It was the poor and unlucky who were left out with no one to protect them.

Season 2.

Purge Night is over and now we have to deal with the consequencnes.  Because what happens on Purge Night never stays on Purge Night.

It looks like we have a few different stories going on here.  We are dealing more with the NFFA which is new.  And NFFA lady who witnessed her friend getting killed.    There is the bank robbing crew just short of being on time so what they did was a major felony and that is probably not a good thing in this new world.  We have frat boy who is probably not too happy at being abandoned by his friend and murdered someone.  And the family man nearly purged who just found out he was targeted.

This season dealing with the days between on purge and the next is going to be fuuunnnn,

I thought it was the frat guy friend of his.  I know he got locked in and the other guy didn't, but I thought maybe it was possible that when the guy in the GOD mask hit him with the cattle prod, he got knocked out, and while he was out, his "friend" then put the mask on to rape him?

I could be totally wrong, but that is the only other person we saw him with in the ep, so I assumed it was him (once he took the mask off and seemed to recognize him).  I guess if my theory about him being knocked out/the mask switch is bogus, it could have just been another of his frat bros.

I don't think it was the frat brother who abandoned him.  I'm pretty sure we see him in the scenes for next week, with the kid who was attacked coming up behind him with anger in his eyes.  I didn't get the impression that it was anyone he knew, but we shall see.

This was the only storyline that fell a little bit flat for me.  It seemed a bit rushed, compared to the other characters' plots, and especially in light of the impact it seems it's going to have on him for the duration of the season.  Otherwise, I enjoyed this ep and its characters a lot, much more so than anything or anyone in Season 1, and I'm intrigued to see where it all goes.  Did think it a trifle naive of Esme, sitting in front of her monitors all night watching the action, to not realize someone might be watching her, as well.  But, of course, the big question is what is File 64?  And I want to see that couple's very cool house again.

I've wanted to know what happens after purge night since the first movie. You can't just attempt to kill someone and think everything is okay once it's over. It's even worse if they're still alive and you're friends.

I didn't know that we'd be getting a second season but I'm excited.

I thought this was a stronger opening that last year. I don't know if the frat boy knew the almost-rapist. "I wasn't really going to!" Yeah, right.

The woman in the official office, that camera seemed to be tracking her. If she uses that video to track down the purgers, is that illegal?

My guess is yes, considering her sneakiness about getting it.  At the very least, she might be hauled off to the Human Resources or Security department, and I wouldn't want to be hauled to the NFFA's HR or Security.

I think this is a really cool idea for a season, I've always wondered what the rest of the year is like in the Purge universe, and it seems like we have a lot of interesting concepts to explore. I mean, yeah crime is legal during the Purge, but its going to be awkward going to the office with someone who tried to kill you on Purge night, or having a neighborhood potluck with people you know like to pick people off with a sniper rifle once a year, and the trauma that happens that night wont just disappear. None of those feels will just disappear. So we have the couple where someone tried to assassinate the husband, the robber crew where one of them stayed inside too long and broke the law, the frat brother who is going to be understandably traumatized by the near rape/murder and killing the creepy guy and will feel betrayed by his buddy, and the NFFA employee/true believer who not only has possibly stumbled into some shadiness, but also saw her friend die right after saying how awesome the Purge was. Sounds like it will be an interesting season! It will be weird having a Purge thing not on Purge night!

I wonder if we will check in with any of last years surviving characters? Maybe in the season finale on next Purge Night Penelope and Miguel will show up to patch somebody up?

Maybe the file those "Purgers" were looking for from the official's friend has something to do with Tavis.  I can't imagine that Pete the Cop was the only one looking into the shit the NFFA were doing, and had evidence of it.

Miguel killed that guy who wanted to murder everyone who 'wronged' him after the sirens went off at the end of last season, right? Now that we know the NFFA has cameras everywhere, I feel like there's no way he can get away with it. I wonder if he was executed for post-Purge murder.

He and Penny are out doing Purge triage, so if the NFFA would have wanted him dead, he'd already be dead.  His friendship with Pete the Cop may have helped him.  We know Pete's taken on the NFFA before, and lived to tell the tale.  He's off limits on Purge Night, so the NFFA wouldn't want to martyr him or his friends.

Also if Joe screwed with Rick and Jenna's security system (likely since he's the one who installed it) before Purge Night, he would be in violation of Purge rules.  So Miguel killing him saved the NFFA some trouble and ammo.  And they may be pissed at Joe for killing Tavis, so they'd look the other way at Miguel killing him.

Season 2 is already really interesting.   We are living in an America where all major felonies are pretty much death penalty crimes.  They are just held until the next purge and killed then.

i thought the opening scene with the cleanup crew was darkly funny.  Of course there would be a market for people to clean up after.  Especially for the wealthy lady who just killed her husband.

i can see the rest of the stories unfolding.   The government employee getting a real taste for what the purge actually is,  the college kid who can’t shake what happened on purge night and the feeling of killing a man,   The family man with a price on his head,  and the criminal trying to buy his And his friend way out of the purge for good with one last score.

Esme's definitely going to find out something about her boss, and the NFFA.  The attack that killed her friend was a coordinated attack, that wasn't amateurs.  And they had mentioned that the Professor was outspoken about issues in the country.  She was marked for death.

I'm guessing the bank robbers' whole storyline will lead to that one guy getting out of the country with his family, while his partners join with the resistance to the NFFA.  That resistance is still out there, and after what happened to the one, I can see the other robbers joining up with them.  Heck, they've mentioned that Purge Night is getting worse with everybody running around.

I wonder if the final episode of this season will bring us back to Purge night. With how the frat guy is behaving, it seems like he's going to go all out on the next purge and won't care who goes down with him. It would be interesting if the guy he killed had the same sort of thing happen to him last year. Kind of like a vicious cycle where you indoctrinate people into the purge by making them victims first.

Oh God that sad dog sitting next to his dead owner just kicked me in the gut. Poor orphaned animals, will no one think of the puppies?!

The post Purge world is still a pretty crappy place, go figure. The government watches everyone, people who commit crimes on non Purge times are beaten and are apparently killed, and society is trying to make the Purge seem normal and exciting, like with the video game. I mean, plenty of people seem to hate the Purge, but its so present in every aspect of life. Its the most interesting idea of the season, how the Purge affects society during the rest of the year and seeing what this world is like the other 364 days a yeah.

So it seems like we have several plots, with Esme finding out that the government took out her friend and realizing how awful the Purge and the government really is, the doctor trying to figure out who put a hit on him and still wants him dead, the robbers will try and break their friend out of jail during the next Purge and/or get a bigger score, and the college guy is reeling from what happened to him and killing a man, becoming more and more unstable. I can already see his story ending with him putting that creepy God mask on next year, although I hope they wont be that obvious.

On the other hand, the story with Ben could connect really well with the reason that Esmes friend was probably killed, that the Purge is making people more violent and unstable. Because, shockingly, allowing masses of people to be horribly traumatized once a year and spending all of your time glorifying violence and how awesome murder is, people start to become more murder-y.

The maid crew cleaning up after Purge night is darkly hilarious.

I am really liking season 2.  What happens AFTER purge night is over.  We are seeing the effects of crime and punishment and just how cruel it is.  One of Ryan's bank robbing buddies is sentences to death while we get their back story which his incredibly interesting.  Honest cops in a dishonest world.    Now he is up against Esme who is looking for her own answers.

Ben has completely lost his mind.  Killing someone outside of purge night is going to have some big consquiences but its going to be the story that shows that you can't just have one night a year and bottle up all that aggression.  Its going to flow over.  It has to,

It makes complete sense that the judges and laws are crazy in this world. If there's a night where you could kill and do whatever one night a year, then police are going to clamp down even harder on crime since everyone should know better. It also opens the door to even more dirty cops.

I think the wife is probably responsible. She gave the doctor guy the slip and he bought it.

Ben...with the way things are going he will probably purge a lot more people before purge night. I don't see him attacking the friend who left him, but I'm worried about the girlfriend. It really does seem like the next purge will have him killing her while wear the God mask. Just like it's former owner did. (I'm assuming the girl was someone he knew)

Or, the girlfriend is going to kill herself since it was foreshadowed that she looked like one of the girls on the bridge. Maybe Ben goes crazy before purge and she decided to end it all.
