The Royal Wedding: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Recommended Posts

Chiming in two months later (I just discovered this thread) to echo most of the sentiments here.

I didn't care about the guest arrivals, so I woke up just in time to see Harry and William arrive.

The dynamic was incredible--Harry was nervous, but excited, William clearly trying to calm him. I loved the uniforms.

I have mixed feelings on the dress. While technically very beautiful and elegant, it was a little too simple for me and I wish it had been done up with some lace or sparkles. But as stated, unlike  the monstrosity that was Diana's (and in all fairness, the style epitomized the 80's), hers and Kate's will look  beautiful decades from now. I loved the veil, however, and as someone with Jamaican parents, I appreciate her including flowers from all the Commonwealth nations.

I wish Megan's mother had walked her down the aisle. It would have been nice to see something like that in a royal wedding.

The LOOK Harry gave her--and kept giving her. . . beautiful. And so was the hand-holding. I think the only time they let go of each other was when they knelt at the altar. His fidgeting was adorable, and I got teary when he did.

I thought the sermon was excellent and the choir was glorious, and so was the cellist.

The crowd screaming when they exchanged vows and the archbishop declared them married was hilarious.

Overall, a magnificent ceremony. I laughed my head off at the idea that a venue that held "only 800" was going to be a "smaller, more intimate" gathering than Westminster or St. Paul's, as repeatedly said in comparison to Will and Kate's or Charles and Diana's, but watching the footage of those weddings in comparison to this one, they were right. I think Harry and Meghan are very lucky that despite all the traditions that were still present, they got to deviate somewhat and put their own personal touches on the ceremony.

I rewatched Will and Kate's wedding to make some comparisons:

William and Harry arrived in a much fancier car.

So did Kate, but she only had one motorcycle escort. Meghan got the larger motorcade, interestingly.

Someone mentioned that William and Harry's uniforms were sharper at William's wedding. True, but I preferred what they wore to Harry's.

All the other men--Charles, Phillip, Andrew--were in military garb for William's wedding, but morning suits here.

While I have no doubt that Will and Kate are very much in love, it's hard not to notice the difference in their body language--unlike Meghan and Harry's nearly constant hand holding, Will and Kate stood with their hands folded in front of them.

William is also heir to the throne, so the protocol may be more formal for his wedding. Plus, I read that's probably just what William and Kate were more comfortable with.

I've also read that William and Kate wanted to get married at St. George's Chapel but being that he's second in line, it wouldn't be possible because while not a state occasion, it was still going to be a much bigger to do.

There’s a pic of them in the Royal Weddings & Scandals topic, from Twitter, where someone “caught” them holding hands during Eugenie’s wedding:

I screwed this up at my own wedding. I was supposed to hold my husband's hands but was so nervous I forgot so I stood there with my hands folded. I can't read anything into William and Kate doing the same.

I just think some couples are more tactile and publicly affectionate with each other than others. Doesn't mean either one is more in love than the other because I for one am not the affectionate, huggy, hand holding type.

That said, I have to admit I've done a fair amount of eye rolling at all the swooning headlines and gushing over Kate and William's two second hand hold at Eugenie's wedding while all I've read ad nauseum since Harry and Meghan publicly stepped out as a couple is how they're breaking protocol holding hands and "ugh, why is she always clinging to him", "ugh she's so needy" (since you know it's always put on her).

The saddest part is how utterly predictable it is and how unsurprised I am by it.

I think the bigger motorcade had to do with the distance and route that Meghan had to follow vs. Kate's route. Kate didn't have to travel very far and all the roads she took were closed to the public, Meghan had to travel a but further and passed some very busy motorways that weren't closed.

I figured that was the reason. And that poor Meghan probably got a substantial amount of threats, thus making the extra security necessary.

I remember being so nervous during the carriage ride. Even though I knew security had swept the buildings, all I could think was, "Please don't let some bigoted nutcase with a rifle be up there."

I think Kate and Wills are very much in love with each other and their adorable children. Also, at some point, he’ll be King and she’ll be Queen or Queen Consort. Harry and Meg won’t ever have that responsibility on their heads so they’re a bit more free to act like two crazy kids in love. I loved Eugenie’s wedding gown. It was beautiful and fit her perfectly. Her reception dress? Loved the fabric, loved the color, loved how it fit her body, loved the skirt portion. The top, however, looked like she was wearing it backwards. If she was wearing a low back to make a further statement about her scar, that was accomplished with the wedding gown. Her breasts looked like “look at me!”  She and her groom looked so delighted in each other. I hope they’ll be fantastically happy together. I do wonder how Andrew is going to pay for this 2 day extravaganza. I’m not sure how much he earns from the Crown but he’s a minor royal and does very little charity work. I bet Liz and Phillip wonder the same thing. He tried to get the Queen to give his two daughters a salary from the Crown earnings and she refused. Apparently, it’s a sore spot between Andrew, Charles and the Queen.

It’s official! Meghan’s and Harry are expecting. I hope they’re slathering her in mosquito repellent. Tonga has a Zika problem.

I don’t think Prince Andrew is hurting for money at all, I’m sure he can afford the wedding. Also HM would want her granddaughter to have a lovely wedding, 1. That’s her granddaughter, 2. The good publicity for the royal family/the country.

I know Fergie often has cash flow problems, she’s admitted to it after being caught red handed taking bribes.  Andrew has also been connected to dodgy financial situations, but how much money he’s been able to retain is unclear. The Yorks have a rep for overspending. However, TLC did buy the rights to air the wedding in the US, so maybe that comes back to the family and The Queen could be paying some of the expense. The police/security for the wedding is covered by the taxpayers.

Just chiming in that I follow the Royal stuff on twitter and I am so HAPPY for these two on their Aussie visit. Not only is she stunning, (I love her style, budget pieces that anyone can purchase is something I love) but she is so chill and cool. She has worn gifts given to her by people and she really understands her role but also is willing to be more modern. I don't think Prince Harry has a problem with it because he can't keep his hands off her, which is how I feel it should be. They are newlyweds and expecting a baby, they should be relishing their time and focus to each other and they are.

Not that I have any problem with Kate and William being more reserved because I'm sure in private they are nothing but adorable and their family is just the cutest, but also because William has a much larger future role. Kate is just as beautiful as Meghan. I love both of them so much.

I just came to say that I cannot wait to see their little one! I think they are going to be even more modern with their child and I think that's a wonderful thing.

I’ve just read that because Meghan has had to cut back on her attendance at some of the scheduled appearances in Australia because she’s so tired, people are beginning to criticize her. She’s early in her pregnancy, has attempted to participate in over 70 engagements with 2 or 3 different changes in clothing, smiling and shaking hands with thousands of people. If you’ve never been pregnant or had a difficult pregnancy, then just shut up. I had one very easy pregnancy that I just floated through and another one that nearly did me in for the first 7 months. I think she and Harry were very brave to attempt this trip at all.

Most of the comments I've read in response to their announcing she had to cut back, have been positive and understanding, with many people talking about their experience with being pregnant and how tired they remember being. The only people who would criticize Meghan for this are racist asshole online trolls who despise her for the fact that she exists. So in other words, people not worth giving any attention and energy to.
