Yes, apparently she was outside chowing down the entire time.  I even thought the special effects were decent this week.  Tentacle monster was sort of creepy the way she sucked that guys fluids right out of him.  Yuck.

Every other alt angel has had a different meat suit  from the original.

But, those other angels were not on Earth pre-1973.  Or, at least I don't think so.  Gabriel was around way before the other angels came down making ready for the Apocalypse. So, it would make sense that he might have the same vessel.  owevere, we know Asmo can't open the rift, so I don't think he could have gotten to him over there.

Because Sam was sleeping and Dean was protecting the girl?

I think it's our Gabriel.  I'm sure they'll just explain it away that it was another fake Gabriel that was killed.  He already did it once in that same episode, so they'll just say he did it again.  I'd almost prefer that than for them to come up with some elaborate bullshit reason.  He is the Trickster after all.

Nyet nyet nyet! They already said only a fcking archangel can use an archangel blade so why can Letch use it. And why the fckk can Asmodeus inject archangel grace!!! shouldn’t it kill him!!!. Remember the days when just looking at grace expressed as light killed demons.
Otherwise fun episode.
And we are still getting Dean!Michael.
Dean being chosen for a host was a big ass anvily clue that this was still on track.

Either they will not find Mary this time and Dean comes back to f one Asmodeus has Sam and goes into Gonzo reckless self sacrifice mode or

He does it because the mega clusterFCK scenario they have set up drives him to seek a big win.

We are totally getting Dean!Michael.

Weird plot points aside, there were some fun Dean moments in this one, with the sticky notes, and psyching Sam out about finding something, the Jinkies! and his irrepressible need to make tentacle porn references. And I agree, Dean: Kale is a garnish. Inexplicably, Sam continues to have a stick up his ass. It's getting seriously annoying and I can't believe they think this is doing the character any favours. Surely even the Sam girls have to be screaming lighten up a little at this point?

Letch loves Mary in his sick way and tried to bond with Dean  in his sick way.  He may actualky be trying for rexenotuin with them.  He is both an interesting and disgusting character. Extremely well acted.

Ketch killed a demon with it on the way out of Assmo's lair. He gave it to the boys after.

Didn't Letch use the blade to kill a demon during the escape.  He grabbed the blade and Gabriel and stabbed a demon on the way out because Gabriel was useless

And they better ecolain how a freaking archangel with actual grace becasje so powerless or how a demon can take it without dying  becauseit is freaky upside down world.

I liked the episode, but it was too rushed at the end. Don’t tell Cas! Go in alone! No wait, take Ketch too! Wouldn’t they have at least waited to see what Gabriel had to say?

So who were the rest of the hooded figures outside?

I hope Dean saying “Jinkies” does become a recurring thing. In light of last week’s swearing debate, I’ll say that if they can’t curse then I hope they just use Scooby Doo phrases from now on.

Apparently everyone in town were MoL descendants watching over the monster wearing their parents' hand me down hoods.

No, they have their own power.  He was juicing up with the grace so he could do the rift opening spell.  NOt really sure why he was injecting it.  But, it's most definitely not his original power source.  I agree that it shouldn't work, though. I mean, other angels apparently can only use other angels' grace for so long, so why would it work at all with a demon?

I do not tbink Asmodeus had any intention of doing the rift opening spell. In a previous, episode he said AU Michael was the last thing he needed. He is doing it so he can wield rhe archangel blade himself and kill Lucifer,  because only an archangel can use an archangel blade... and Letch apparently.

The first half of the episode was pretty great. Interesting Men Of Letters lore, a new bunker, a cool new guest star, a great fight scene...

... then the case completely fell apart when they revealed Sandy was a monster. They were setting up an awesome confrontation between the brothers and some crazy Men Of Letters over the amulet, and what we got instead was the revelation that Sam and Dean got a dozen or so good guys killed through their negligence, the MOTW going down without a fight, and Sam and Dean getting handed the amulet without breaking a sweat. Yawn.

Asmodeus and Ketch were their usual trash selves. Colonel Sanders talked a bunch, beat up a human then got humiliated for like the fourth time this season. What an embarrassing character.

I can't even with that lame-ass redemption arc they're setting up for Ketch. The whole thing makes zero sense. I mean obviously it was just very lazily set up so that Ketch would bring Gabriel to Sam and Dean at the right moment, and they weren't even able to hide the fact that it was just terrible writing.

The fact that their next course of action for Ketch is him helping save Mary after their puke-inducing relationship last season is just awful. That's what they're choosing instead of having Sam and Dean go together. Great priorities you've got there, writers. As if Castiel couldn't babysit Gabriel for 24 hours.

There's no saving this season now, it's way too late. Just hoping they'll kill as many characters as possible and maybe get some good scenes with Gabriel. Season 14 needs to start over, not be a continuation of this garbage.

I enjoyed this episode - Dean was sassy and in good spirits, which I always enjoy. The post-its on Sam's back were solely for his own amusement, which made it even funnier to me, and his being all, "I don't know. Probably not." about whether he was going to stop saying "Jinkies" eventually made me LOL. Plus faking Sam out about having found something. I don't know. I just got a kick out of that.

I didn't find Sam quite so dour this week.

That is the biggest pile of crap. I cannot fathom how that can possibly work! It's absurd!!

So are we now to understand that all the Princes of Hell, including Azazel got their power from archangel grace or what? Way to screw with Azazel, one of the top 5 villains in the show. Ugh. Are we sure Perez wrote this and not Buck Lemming?? UGH

No. My inference is the Asmodeus is doing it precisely to wield the archangel blade in order tti kill Lucifer himself.

This is not a bad plan except for the fact that he is a demon and it shouldn't work and archangel grace exoressed as light used to be enough to kill all demons within sight of it.

No, they didn't show it.  But, they had to have an ingredient (dean's hair) that had been in the place they wanted to go.  Which actually could mean they ended up back in Mosnsterland.  Wonder why nobody thought of that?

I think the other pledges or heirs or whatever the MoL descendants are called told them how to control which dimension that they open to using the seal and the promo shows that they went to AU Apocalypse.  They have no idea exactly where Mary is however.

I feel like, either way, once Sam starts questioning Gabriel, we'll know if this is our Gabriel or alt world Gabriel. It could be alt world Gabriel because I could buy Michael torturing Gabriel for long enough where he ended up this way before probably stumbling through the rift, getting caught by Asmodeus, and then used and tortured again. It would make way more sense than this being our Gabriel, who faked his death back in season 5 and has been in hiding before getting captured and tortured into this shriveled up version of himself. Honestly, I'd much rather this was alt world Gabriel.

This was the first episode with Asmodeus where I thought he was at least mildly threatening/evil, rather than just cringeworthy.  It sounded to me like he'd toned down the Colonel Sanders schtick just a bit.  And it was fun watching him kick Ketch's ass.  He had it coming.

IA about Asmodeus in this one. He beat the shit out of Ketch AND humiliated him while he was doing it. I don't think Ketch is still working for him, but I DO think that Ketch is scared shitless of him now and would find another universe the safest place to hide, so yes, he's still thinking of himself first; but I also think that he thinks he might be able to find redemption in the AU world, too-something that he will never find in our world-as Asmodeus told him.

Asmodeus also humiliated Gabriel-humiliation seems to be his thing. I think it was Asmodeus who sewed Gabriel's mouth up and I think that he is OurWorld Gabriel. I think Asmodeus was juicing up on archangel grace to be ready for the next time that he faces Lucifer.

There certainly are things I could nitpick, but I'm just so glad to have an episode that was solid entertainment, that I'm going to try not to analyze it too closely.  I'm sure we'll get an explanation as to what happened with Gabriel.  He has yet to actually speak a word, so his story will be told, eventually.  As for demons and angel grace, I have no clue.  But they stopped being true to canon quite a while ago, so I'm just going to go with it.

Heh. The bolded part actually made the episode ten times better for me. And now that Dean has gone through the rift(something I never expected to happen this early), that leaves Sam to deal with him which works great for me.

And I like Ketch much better than Gabriel, so if he earns his redemption in the AU with Dean, good for him, I say.

And I also agree with whoever said that once Dean had the last part of the spell there was going to be no stopping him from using it immediately and I'm sure he counted on Sam to fill Cas in on everything. And his reasons for going w/o Sam were sound also, and I think even Sam realized that.

It was a really good fight scene, but those fight scenes in Baby were legendary, IMO; so not quite as good, again IMO, but for a Perez episode it WAS something else.

I loved that the "monster" liked Dean's face so much that she wanted him to wear her lover. I love Dean's acerbic wit in those situations and have missed it fiercely.

And yes, loved, loved, LOVED! that he picked the lock one-handed to save himself. Awesome indeed.

Well, that was interesting. Interesting, fun, exciting, and infuriating tbh.

Interesting:
- The whole random baby bunker ‘cult’ with robes and devotion to starving the monster. I can see the police being in on it.  Serious world threat and all.  But you don’t leave the front door unattended.  I guess they thought no one else had a key.  Maybe they tripped a silent alarm?
- Why are you charging in alone Dean?  Are you really that reckless or are you worried about Billie’s warning.  I could be totally off base here, but It felt like this was Dean’s plan from the get-go.  Go alone.  I think he’s protecting Sammy and maybe Cas.  Just a hunch.  And taking Ketch with him keeps that viper within eyesight of Dean — where Dean can control what’s going on with him rather than leave Sam to deal with a messed up Archangel AND Ketch.
- Asmodeus juicing up.  I agree it’s to enable him to wield the Archangel blade and likely to kill Luci.  Luci has been the fly in Asmodeus’ Chardonnay for centuries.  He’d take the risk. Plus Asmodeus seems to be very keen on spellwork.  He may have done something to his meat suit that allows him to take the grace.  I will agree with anyone who wants to call it LOL-cannon because there was no explanation for how it worked.
- Ketch.  He IS a delusional MF (oh wait, is that too on the nose? My bad).  But Asmodeus had his number.  And I appreciated the beat down.  I also think Ketch admires the boys and sees his life differently now that he’s met them. His whole ‘code’ was so much bullshit.  And I’m glad Asmodeus called him out.   I want him to die.  Horribly.  And I want Dean and Mary to tell him a few good acts do not make up for his psychotic killings

Fun:
- Dean and the Tentacle Porn.  It was actually another “vessel” issue versus Dean and actual tentacles, but he got such a delight in joking about the booty call.  He never seemed scared, which frankly, he should have been.  Those suckers weren’t messing around.  Still, it was fun watching his face and his reactions.  Gatekeeper/Keymaster – now which one is which?
- How to entertain yourself when bored … put stupid “kick me” post-its on your brother. Obviously.  Sam, you keep eating that kale.  I bet it gives you an advantage in the fart department.

Exciting:
- Excellent fight scenes.  Dean in the kitchen, once again using whatever he needs.  Also loved Dean immediately making homemade bombs and weapons to go after Sam.  I love protective Dean and all I could think of was “those dudes messed with the wrong guy”.  You do NOT take Sammy.  Nope nope nopeity nope.
- Sam to the rescue. I’m kinda shocked Sam was able to shake off the drug so fast – must be his size.  Way to go charging to the rescue – it doesn’t matter if she’s a god-like being, put a clip into her, she’s messing with your bro.
- Escaping the tentacles … good tension, glad to see the lockpick come out.

Infuriating:

- I LOVE DEAN.  But I want Cas to kick his ass to Timbuctoo and back.   He didn’t even CALL Cas.  Now, as I theorized above, I suspect Dean has been planning to make the journey solo (somehow) either because of what Billie said or because he’s unwilling to risk Cas and Sam.  I think his upbeat personality is because he has Sam and Cas around.  I think he’s overcompensating for when he lost Cas at the beginning of the year. BUT, that doesn’t mean you leave them on the side of the road and go marching into enemy territory without them.  So Cas, kick his ass.  They don’t want to lose you Dean, anymore than you want to lose them.

Overall: I want to see it again, lots of good stuff.  Still want to kick Dean's butt for dashing into the rift without Sam or Cas.

This reminded me of MoC!Dean going after Metatron on his own.  At least with MoC!Dean there was a distance growing and Dean was definitely not himself in that situation. This is IMO completely contrived for him to go with Ketch for Ketch's SL which I have no interest in Dean and Ketch battling together for any damn reason.

I also think Dean would be better off alone than with Ketch who is 100% NOT trustworthy. It's so stupid really. IMO

I think Dean wants Ketxh within arms’ reach so he can drop him if he wants to.  If he left him with Sammy and Gabriel, Dean would worry more.  Maybe Mary will shoot him again.  On sight.  Works for me.  There’s no redeeming Ketch IMO.

Overall, a decent episode I hope to rewatch later and post thoughts on. My only nitpicks are a) the notes on Sam’s back isn’t funny. You’re a forty year old man Dean time to grow up and b) The waitress’ digs at Sam and Sandie were far from amusing either. Perhaps it’s a cultural thing, and Americans are more lax than us, because I watched with a friend who worked as a waitress for years and she said if she’d been caught making disparaging remarks about a customers order or worse still commenting on their weight she’d have at the very least received a firm warning or been fired (depending on whether she had any past offenses).

I agree. I don't care about Ketch getting redemption and he shouldn't be a part of the big hero plot to save Mary. If Sam didn't go through the rift with Dean it should have been Cas who did.

I don’t think Cas would have went through the rift had he been there. I think Sam and Dean would have went through and Cas would have been assigned Gabriel sitting duty.

So if the writers needed J2 seperate for some logistical reason or a plot requirement then someone untrustworthy like Ketch was the better option.

So was this Dean-fan quid pro quo for Sam going to fight the BMoL alone while Dean stayed behind and got emo?

I still call BS on Ketch using the blade. Sure, maybe Kali believed she could use it, but she didn't, and if she was able to, well she's... Kali. I don't care that he did, I just want consistency. It was just a few damn episodes ago!

Of course once upon a time they also said only an angel could kill another angel. Since pretty much anyone can do it (beginning with Dean killing Zachariah, and giving me a thrill of hope for a hot minute) then it has to be assumed the power is in the blade, not the wielder. Maybe the same holds true for the archangel blade. Seems like only the First Blade requires a specific user (until, you know, it doesn't).

Sam and Dean have been to two AU worlds, right?  The one where Mary and Jack are, and the monster one that Jack zapped them to.  So why so confident that Dean's hair will take them to the right one?  Cas has only been to the one where Mary and Jack are, that we know of, so I would have thought that he would have been the safer choice.  But logic - bah.

I mostly enjoyed the episode; it seemed more balanced between Sam and Dean than some.

I thought it was okay.

Gotta say I wasn`t really blown over by the fight in the diner. The fight choreography for this show seems to be for most of it "amateur bar brawl" style, emphasis on amateur. Not my kind of thing. And of course it had to end in a very predictable way. I really rolled my eyes.

Now I did like that Dean unlocked the cuff one-handed, saved himself and managed to snatch the seal and throw it to the one MOL-chick. That was pretty cool. And subverted the expectation of "Deansel in distress for the 1000th time".

Also was amused that Dean was chosen as the vessel for the god-mate. You have good taste, tentacle-lady.

The MOL-legacies acted shady and, frankly, tactically stupid. How about keeping out of sight until everyone ate the drugged food. Also, you have no guards on the bunker 24/7 if you consider this your life`s work? At least some simple explanations and warnings for anyone who might enter there? Because otherwise it will look like someone chained a helpless woman to an altar so what an outrageous idea that they would free her.

They got themselves killed by running a really dumb operation. Guess they inherited their tactical skills from Great-Grandpa Crazy.

Gabriel was really over the top skittish there. He is supposed to be an archangel. Not a mouse.

They are clearly setting up a redemption for Ketch. Asmodeus basically preached it. Probably through dying but "redemption" no less.

Speaking of Colonel Sanders, please stop talking.

I didn`t mind Ketch using the archangel blade to kill a demon. I guess it works like any random angel blade that way. Now to kill another archangel, it has to be wielded by an archangel. One time, I have no problem with their lore-hopping. To me it`s still intact.

Finally a tactically sound decision at the end because them both going stupidly through the rift would have been, well, stupid. One SHOULD stay behind in case things go wrong. Yes, it was a plot convenience that Cas wasn`t there but since he wasn`t, taking Ketch wasn`t a bad idea. He is a strong fighter and while not untrustworthy, it`s still better than leaving him at the bunker.

The ending just felt pretty rushed. Like "do the spell, go". Um, okay? Is there a reason we need an interlude in the AU world right now? And an interlude it will be. We`re only at episode 17, going on 18.

But, there was no reason not to wait for him.  It's not like Mary and/or Jack just got sucked intot he other dimension hours ago.  It's been months, for Mary at least.  I don't know where Cas is, but presumably not that far away.  A few more hours wasn't going to make a difference.  If they had thrown something in about why they had to open the rift in the next 5 minutes, I would totally agree with you.  Like this particular spell only works at Midnight on April Fool's Day. Golly, Sam, that's tonight. checks watch.  We have 3 minutes to do this spell.

I found the episode to be entirely predictable and boring--I kept checking to see how much longer it was going to take to finish--and I stayed away from all the previews and spoilers this time as an experiment to see if the episode would be more of a surprise. It wasn't.

Personally, I thought Sam and Dean were pretty dumb throughout the entire episode, too. First, they unchain a 100-year-old woman without as much as a question of what she was doing there in the first place; which, of course she's a monster, come on guys! Then they open the rift without taking two seconds to talk to Gabriel first. And, there is no reason why Ketch is still alive. At the very least I would've locked him in the dungeon, at most I'd have shot him in the head, but I definitely wouldn't have allowed him to cross the rift with me. Whatever.

Anyhoo, I guess it was an inoffensive episode, it just seemed to drag on and on and on and on and on... .

I couldn't help picturing  a bottle of mustard and a bottle of ketchup fighting.

What a ridiculous fight too. I mean, what a waste of angel grace. Even without the angel grace Ketch is no match for Asmodeus.

So who were the rest of the hooded figures outside?

I believe they were the decedents of the original group who summoned the creature.

Nyet nyet nyet! They already said only a fcking archangel can use an archangel blade so why can Letch use it.

Only an archangel can use it to kill another archangel, but I suspect it works like any other angel blade in non-archangel hands--meaning, you can kill some things, but not other things.
