Garrett was definitely laughing and rolling his eyes as he wrote that apology . I mean , he really doesn't owe anyone any apology . He obviously did it to save face but realistically , his opinions and what he chooses to " like" on social media is up to him . I mean , people "like" memes and mean things written about Trump all the time but don't feel like they have to issue an apology . Don't get me wrong , I think he's definitely douchey for liking what he liked , but why feel the need to apologize ?

I was going to stay unspoiled this season but this news has been everywhere so here I am...and I'm just bummed out.

This will be the fourth season in a row with a really depressing/worrisome background story happening that just sucks the fun out of it.

First there was Lee being cast for Rachel, then there was the BIP incident and the truly cringe worthy weekly coverage of it that they did, then there was asshole Arie and now liberal Becca ending up with a douchy guy who thinks that it's funny to mock mistreated and abused children (among other things).

Sigh.

yeah, yeah...we'll see I guess. They might just manage to edit him in a flattering enough way to sell the "he didn't mean anything and now knows better" line?

If Garret's apology is genuine and he's willing to become more open-minded and listen to Becca, maybe their relationship will last. I honestly don't think Garrett is a bad person, I just think he's ignorant about certain topics and lived a sheltered life where he never had his worldviews questioned before joining the show. I'd like to believe people have a great capacity for change, and if joining The Bachelorette ultimately makes Garrett a more empathetic person and forces him to be more aware of issues in the world outside his Instagram feed, then I might actually enjoy watching this season.

I'm hoping this is the case. I don't like to believe that no one can ever change, as many people seem to. I obviously do not know this guy, and don't really care personally what he's like, but maybe he grew up in a rather sheltered Nevada environment and has experienced different people and new things during the filming of the show. I would honestly think that's great, and am always willing to give people a chance to apologize and grow. Otherwise, we just assume everyone is good or bad and that's that, which is a very depressing way to live IMO. Either way, I'm going to try to enjoy this season of my guilty pleasure and not hating Garrett is how I plan to do it!

Garret seems like a total redneck and I don't believe his apology for one second.  He doesn't have a clue how offensive he is.  He is not just "not PC", he is way beyond that.  Saying that, I think Becca is a bit of a redneck as well, not a liberal at all, so they're actually pretty well suited together.  Probably why she's not coming out and sayin that Garret was wrong.

I don't want to get too political here, but it's nearly impossible not to with this Garrett situation.

I feel like there's a big difference between liking a post about a conspiracy theory claiming a Parkland student is a crisis actor versus liking a post mocking Trump for having the words "I hear you" on a notecard as a reminder to be empathetic towards Parkland families. One side is rooted in fiction while the other is rooted in reality. Far too many people unquestionably believe the Parkland conspiracy theories, which also means they would rather think children are actors playing up the severity of a school shooting instead of having empathy and respect for children who just went through a traumatic event where their classmates and teachers were killed. When you're involved in spreading a conspiracy theory attacking a grieving teenager (liking a post helps boost its validity), an apology is necessary. I'm assuming Garrett mindlessly clicked the like button without much thought, but mindless clicks are how those memes spread faster, which then creates an even bigger political divide. There are a lot of Garretts in the world who might be perfectly nice people in front of their friends and family, but they probably don't read much news outside the funny memes they see on their social media feeds, so to them, the conspiracy theories are their reality.

It's difficult to "just listen to what the other side has to say, don't be so PC" when the posts Garrett liked lack basic empathy. The opposite of throwing a child over the border wall is not punishing a child for a decision they were too young to make because their parents forced them to move. The opposite of mocking boys who use makeup, the transgender community, or feminists is not mocking boys who use makeup, the transgender community, or feminists and becoming more accepting of others who aren't like yourself.

You don't even know him .. your statements about him and becoming open minded and listening to becca make it seem like you're their therapist and know everything about them .

Im not saying he's a great guy but maybe he is .. who knows ? None of us do .

But the Garrett we will be watching on this show is the one who "liked" the crap in his Instagram, not the one who's social media has be scrutinized recently and who's HAD to apologize to the public.  This was all filmed months ago.

During this season, the guy we see hasn't been "caught" yet.  On these episodes, he has no clue he's been outted as enjoying intolerant, bigoted and unsympathetic memes.

It's impossible for me to have any appreciation for him on screen, knowing what I know now.  Maybe I'm just as intolerant, bigoted and unsympathetic as he appears.  I'll own it.  But I'm not trying to get attention for my business, or somebody on TV to want to marry me, so there's that.....

You're right. I don't know him or Becca at all. I can only assume based on his apology that he's willing to become more open-minded because that's what he (or ABC or whoever) wrote, but that could all be to save face, too. I tried to analyze the situation the best I could as a complete internet stranger, but I could be totally wrong with my assumptions as well. I'll own that.

I wasn't trying to imply that I'll enjoy watching Garrett on screen now that he's apologized, but that I won't feel as repulsed watching the entire season in general knowing he admitted his mistakes. If he didn't apologize at all, I probably wouldn't watch the rest of the season. I still won't feel great watching his scenes this season, but if he's willing to become more educated like he claims, I can at least tell myself the current version of this person might not be as terrible as the past version we're watching on TV every Monday night. I'm still going to hardcore judge his past actions yet be optimistic that maybe his current self can flip over a new leaf. (If society has any chance of progress, we're going to need all the flipped leaves we can take.) I've seen people in my life go from bigoted to open-minded, but I've also seen bigoted stay bigoted. Only time will tell what happens here, I guess.

Understood and agree, Curio!

And in other news, according to Reality Steve's Twitter, some folks clued him into the fact that contestant Leo "the hair" has a pretty active IMDB page for acting credits, including a soft-core porn role in "High Heel Homicide" from last year.  *LOL*  I'll bet the girls in Paradise are checking that movie out right now!

I bet Garrett is sorry that he caused Becca some bad press and that he probably was at the receiving end of a very uncomfortable phone call from someone at ABC. However, I think there is another angle from which Garrett may be operating and that is that there is a movement that is very much against having to be "politically correct" where comedy is concerned. Comedians, whether standup, talk-show hosts, or internet meme creators abhor "sacred cow" topics that can't be joked about at all and will purposely like and support and thus spread the popularity of some of these memes just to prove this point.

We all have the freedom to offend but with that comes the consequences. A smart offender will know his arena. Garrett is naive in that he entered an arena beyond his understanding. So we basically had sacred cow disrupter Garrett bump up against sacred cow protector Ashley Spivey. That's freedom.

Here’s my wafer thin but hopeful take on Garrett.  I’ve met dude bros who have spent the majority of their life with dude bros and have accepted that dude bro life as sacrosanct.

But when taken out of their natural habitat they have opened their eyes to the world entire and evolved to where they would willingly wear a pussy hat to a women’s march and a rainbow pin at pride with, well, pride.

I don’t know if that’s who he is but I have seen it happen, so, until shown otherwise I guess I will cross my fingers and hope for the best.

I know I said that Becca is a liberal but now that you say this, I think you might be right. I think I read somewhere that she was a liberal, but I don't know that that was much more than an assumption.

She has pictures on Instagram flicking off a Trump sign and marching in the Women's March so I think it's safe to say that she is pretty liberal.   Minnesota is a also a state that leans very heavily democratic so I don't think she would be considered "redneck"

And now we know that it's David who falls out of a bunk bed at the mansion & has to be taken to the hospital.....If ONLY he'd had on his chicken suit, the feathers might have padded his landing.

What freaks me out is one of the dates is Becca's "friends" giving some of the guys manis & pedis.  Seriously?  You want me to go on TV and mess with some random guy's FEET?  Too gross!

NONE of the dates for these pussy men are the rappelling down a building, rock climbing, climbing on top of a bridge or anything even vaguely scary, the way the women are ALWAYS subjected to.  WTF production?  I guess they're afraid of smudging their nail polish after their manis..... :-(

Same.

That apology is well-written (and surely not by Garrett lol), but some of it was horseshit. Some of it was nice though. Hell, I'm just glad it didn't say 'sorry if I offended anyone.'

I'm willing to hope that maybe he was just an ignorant, run-of-the-mill douchebag and that maybe Becca can help him grow. LOL what am I, a fucking right reasons watcher all of the sudden?!

From the preview it looks like it's the other way around - the women are wearing robes, so the guys will be giving them mani-pedis. Which is still a stupid idea because 1. why would Becca want the guys she's dating to be giving other women hand and foot massages, and 2. why would the women want mani-pedis from people who aren't trained/licensed to perform them. Maybe it's just me, but I'm very picky about who I allow to do my nails.

Most rednecks acknowledge what they are, and are proud of the fact.  I live among them, and I've never known a single one to be even the slightest bit offended at the term, female or male.

I'm sure the thin-skinned redneck exists, but not down here on the Gulf Coast.  ;-)

And I just realized that Lincoln's accent reminds me of the horrible Don Cheadle pseudo-Brit accent in "Oceans 11".  I'm sure his is real though.

Once again, I accidently spoiled myself  (I was replying to Leighdear on the media thread, saw her name and clicked this by mistake.)  Garrett.  I can't believe it.  She could have chosen Jason the corporate banker who looks like a young Al Pacino, but she chooses the sales rep with the big, forced looking grin and a mean spirit.  Yes it is.  There's the sort of "not PC," that has your old Aunt calling Native Americans "Indians," out of habit and there's casting shade on a  kid who went through a school shooting.  One is just being behind the times and the other is hating.  Becca may be a feminist but she has stated her love for hunting and fishing and the type of man who goes in for all that so she may lean right when it comes to issues like gun control -- and big, hulking  macho guys.   Sorry, Garrett is so not my type, I can't even be fair to him.

Just had to comment on this and say that I recently visited the National Museum of the American Indian here in DC.  The speaker called himself American Indian (he asked how many of us were born in America and when we raised our hands, he said that that made us "Native Americans") but he said that his grandfather took issue with the term and referred to himself as Native American.  So I don't know if it's a generational thing, but apparently both terms are used.

Well I recently had someone angrily correct me on both "Indian," and "Native American," to tell me the proper thing  was, "First Nation."   It all started while we were looking at statues in a botanical garden and I pointed to the sculpture of a  gentleman in feathered headdress and said I really liked the Indian.  I plan to avoid the subject altogether in the future.

I always have a hard time with the different terms too. But I think people know whether someone is just unsure of the right words to use or if they're racist.

This is ot, but this discussion reminded me of a time in Big Brother Canada when someone called another houseguest a redneck and he lost his mind over it. It was super hilarious.

No matter what you say, what terminology you use, you're going to offend someone since we aren't clones and no two people will have the same reaction. It's a mine field these days. I do agree there is a big difference between a person who just isn't sure what term to use and someone who is an ignorant racist/sexist/etcist. It's all in the tone. Unfortunately we now live in a world where most people don't communicate face to face so tone is completely lost. When writing a post I often wonder how it will come across to other people. I'm very sarcastic and that is hard to pull off as well in type.

Just because one person is comfortable being called a redneck doesn’t mean others are.  Such double standards in these forums.

I never watch unspoiled.  It is so much more fun watching them edit the winner into the background and then try and fake you out that the #2 is going the whole way.  Best season to be spoiled was Emily's since Jef was not a big deal for a real long time.

I heard an interview years ago with an Indian/Native American who said that while he had no issue with either term personally, he understood that some treaties specifically referred to "Indians," and in those instances, where benefits might be available to said "Indians," he would be fine calling himself an Indian.

These guys are really a disappointment.  The David/Jordan feud is tiresome.  It's entertainment value is about as high as a slap fight between 3 year-old girls over a Barbie doll.

I did like Richard Marx, though the "songwriting" date was dull.  He still sounds & looks great.

I don't exactly know what I'm expecting from these people, but this isn't it.

Reality Steve says he has potentially disturbing news about one of Becca's guys.

I wonder if it's that cutie Alex Templeman, who left a week ago. I googled him after he left, and by golly if there isn't a pending lawsuit against him for battery.

He apparently was in an altercation with some guy and it was serious enough that the guy filed charges. From the tiny bit that's been reported, Alex claims it was self defense.  That's as much as I've found.

Doesn't say when the lawsuit was formally filed, so I can't (yet) blame the crackerjack Bachelor casting team for another superb casting choice. And again, I shouldn't jump to conclusions based on such skimpy info.

...Or maybe RS is talking about someone else.

Reality Steve's scoop is up and it's a doozy as you can see from the name of the link above.  He includes a quote from the DA so it isn't just a rumour.

ABC and/or the production company really needs to step up their vetting practices. RS says Lincoln was charged in 2016, so either they knew and cast him anyway, or they didn't do a proper background check. Not a good look either way.

Becca has every reason to be upset that they cast a man who has assaulted women.  At some point she will have to send Lincoln home, which could trigger his anger, or, if he makes it as far as the Fantasy date, she would be alone  with him.  There's every reason to be afraid of him, he not only has a history of assaulting women, we've seen how manipulative he can be with his tearful, "I felt threatened," routine that Becca and many others fell for.

The woman in the stoning case had committed  adultery. That is not considered a crime in America.  You may want to open all the prison doors and let out the murderers, rapists, thieves and batterers based on the "not casting stones," thing,  but I don't think Jesus was suggesting that.  Actually Lincoln sounds more like the stoner than the stonee, he apparently likes to use that gigantic, muscular bicep he's so proud of, to hurt women.

That's what it boils down to. Even though he hadn't been convicted yet at the time of casting, the fact that he was awaiting trial for assaulting a woman should have automatically disqualified him. Just six months before the Bachelorette casting the franchise went through their biggest PR nightmare revolving around the issue of consent. Everyone involved in the show should have been on high alert after that. I hope the show completely disassociates itself from him and doesn't allow him to participate in any future "Bachelor Family" events, including the Men Tell All, After The Final Rose, Bachelor in Paradise, etc.
