S07.E03: Spurgeon's First Haircut

Recommended Posts

I just watched this and my question is - what in the world did Miracle Josie blather about at the very end TH with Jessa?  Honestly for a child of 8 she was impossible to understand.  Even Jessa looked puzzled.  Can't blame her, but can blame the parents for not getting her what she needed/needs.

Does Austin have any sisters?  When he and Joy were in the "kitchen" and he wanted to get around her, he basically gave her a shove out of the way.

One sister.

I don't know how many bedrooms that house has. I'm sure they are going to have a bundle of kids, so at least 2 to a bedroom. They will need the bigger rooms for the kids.

4 bed/2 bath.

I asked my sister about this with the boys and she said that some of the "cool" bathing trunks do not have liners and it's pretty normal for the boys to wear their boxers under their suits. My seven nephews 14-22 all wear boxers under their suits so I guess it's a thing and I can assure you none of them are worried about modesty.

I, um, what? Why would someone make a swimsuit without a liner????  I asked Mr. Dragon and he was like, why would I want to wear wet underwear and basically wet shorts.  But then we're old and probably no where near cool.  Thanks for the info!

My nephews are generally wearing nicer styles, they are little fashionistas. That is what my sister said "no liner" , I argued that they always had liners and she said the ones the boys wear don't and they all wear boxers or Under Armor. I honestly don't get it either. If you search for "no liner swimwear" on Amazon it really is a thing, who knew. I guess the net lining causes chafing so they wear something else..

This was the most boring thing I have ever seen.

YUP! Hair cuts - boring. Using the men's store as an idea place then buying two ties - boring and rude. Bookshelf moving and building - boring. Shit, even their water fun day was boring to watch, although I did wonder if Kendra and Joe needed to speak to their parents that evening because they practically had sex on the way down and upon landing.

Poor Ben felt the need to qualify having fun. I've done stuff like that well past 22, usually alcohol was involved, but so what.

When will we see the episode where Ben cuts Jessa's hair? Now that's an episode I'd tune in for. We've seen her do his and Spurgeon's. Come on now. Fair is fair.

I finally watched this mess last night and all I have to say is wow, I think we need to file a Missing Persons report for Bin's balls. Is Jessa really that fantastic a lay that Bin's willing to look like such a pansy on national television?

I agree with the consensus on Babe's office. The heavy, dark wood and clunky desk suffocated the room. You're not holding security briefings in the Oval Office, Jer. I think you can take it down a notch.

Jessa talking about Henry's eczema? All those examples of Internet research and not one mention of taking him to the pediatrician. I wonder if ol' Fedosky is on the outs with the Arkansas Medical Board again.

Joy looked four months pregnant at six weeks. She and Austin annoyed me less this episode. I like that she isn't a spoiled princess when it comes to her living situation.

Bitter Apple, your comments are always the best.  Thank you for the laughs, particularly over this one "Is Jessa really that fantastic a lay that Bin's willing to look like such a pansy on national television?".  BUT, I believe he is just a laid back (no pun intended) kind of guy..... he seems quite sweet.

Forgot to add earlier.  Jordyn during the couch segment..... she is such a beautiful little girl.  Anyone else see her and agree?

He knows she's been taught to be "available" to her husband b/c she is the only one that can give him that "special gift", so for any 22 yr old - that is a dream come true.

Michelle's advice to women about sex is "Don't worry, it doesn't take too long." Unless the Duggar girls are going rogue in the bedroom, I guessing it's a lot like slam, bam, thank-you ma'am.

Does anybody know what app Jeremy was using to speak English into Spanish?  I could have fun with that.

I wonder if he has a live translator during services. Or if that app is running and shown on a screen, as he talks. Hard to preach a fire and brimstone sermon or hold an intellectual bible study if you have to look up every other phrase/word.

I think Kendra may have lucked out by marrying Joseph.  He seemed so sweet and caring.  And she did not feel the need to prop him up when they were asked if they wiped out on the slip and slide.  Joseph tried to say no, but she piped up with a yes.  And he seemed fine with her publicly disagreeing with him, and she didn't seem worried about having disagreed with him.  She is insanely young, but I think she's found a nice guy.

Agreed. Joseph seems like a genuinely nice guy who doesn't get off on being the headship in charge of HIS woman, the way most fundie men do. She disagreed re the wipeout and he went with it. And I believe they showed him saying he wasn't planning to go down the slip and slide and she said something like -- oh but it looks so fun-- and he was basically like -- ok let's go. No standing there trying to convince her it wasn't appropriate or was for little kids or whatever. Even at the suit shop when they were buying the ties, he says something like -- Kendra didn't need me here, she could have handled it but I wanted to hang out with her. It seemed like such a normal young boyfriend thing to say. He doesn't fancy himself indispensable, he simply wants to be wherever his girlfriend is.

It helps that they were raised the same way and have the same type of fundie belief, so it's not like he's going to have to pull the headship card to keep her from working a job and keep her having babies - bc she wants to be a stay home wife/mom. But I also think that say after 4-6 kids if she's just DONE and can't go through childbirth again, I feel like Joseph will be agreeable about that. I get the vibe from JD as well -- I think he would just want a nice woman who cares about him and wants to bear his kids and he'd do what he could to make her happy, but I don't see that "controlling" vibe that I get from other fundie guys like Austin, Josh etc.

Of all these fundie husbands, Joe may be the best catch.  I don't know what kind of income he will have, but he seems like a nice guy and not as rigid as Austin, as narcissistic as Jeremy, nor as crazy as Derick.  And he won't have a wife like Jessa leading him around by his nose.

Is that it, they were pre-fab? Because I was wondering why they weren't stained the same color as the desk. I guess that was as close a match as they could get.

They really should have painted the room a richer color before they installed the bookshelves. They do actually own the house - they can paint things other colors than just white. All that dark wood would look much better against walls with some color to them.

Agree! Those dark bookcases and that bulky desk look too heavy/clunky for the room. I'm not a fan of darker woods, so I am biased. However, if Jeremy was dead set on those bookcases, he should've balanced the weight of the room with a smaller desk and a warmer wall color in his home office.

I could be nitpicking here, but it's because I was initially stoked that Jinger got to leave Arkansas post-marriage and focus on herself.  I find it really sad that JinJer flaked on their Spanish lessons. I was embarrassed for them when Jinger said they realized they don't speak Spanish "except for ordering food or having a small conversation." ( I'm embarrassed myself that I know that quote by heart.) He is a college graduate - didn't he have to take a language to graduate? I sadly realized that Jinger thinks saying  "Thank you very much." and " God bless you. " counts as a conversation. Then I remember she's a Duggar deep down, despite her wearing pants/tennis clothing. They're not taught how to engage in two way conversations about anything of substance in any language! Ordering a quesadilla con pollo isn't speaking Spanish.

Jeremy claims to be a scholar, so why not stick with the language classes to better serve the people of his community or be an effective member on mission trips to Spanish speaking countries? Jinger could have taken a class at the community college during the day and had proper instruction in learning the language.

There's something (actually,  there's a lot!) about Jeremy that I don't care for, but I can't put my finger on it. He strikes me as a controlling guy/wannabe Alpha male who doesn't give the death stare that Austin does to Joy, but he is nowhere near as nice as any of the Bates boys! Jer couldn't even have fun hitting balls with his wife. It had to be a friggin game, keeping score and knowing he'd play so much better than his wife. Where's the fun in that? As @JocelynCavanaugh said, they should have paid for a private lesson and started playing on an equal playing field. I didn't watch the season with their wedding, so maybe I missed some type of background on why he strikes me as odd?

The minute Jeremy used his phone to translate words to Spanish (and he couldn't even pronounce "ayudar" correctly!!!), I had immediate flashbacks to 90 Day Fiance's resident linguist, Paul aka Pole!

Did anyone see Anna during the family water slide event? I thought I saw one of her kids near Josie

She's in the background, at the top of the hill, super pregnant looking. As usual.

So I'll say it: something is off with Josie. She looks nothing like her siblings -nothing. She looks ill; almost as if her early birth somehow impacted her facial features. (As creepy as they are, the majority of those kids are good looking. Josie is not.)

I don't mean to personally attack a kid, and this stems from pure snark.

She looks like a little girl who is sick a lot and needs regular visits to a doctor or other health specialists to "catch up" to other kids her age. I know her health/development have been discussed ad nauseam, but her appearance was quite jarring to me in the most recent episode, hence fhe remark.

I swear Jordyn, who sat with Josie during a TH, looked like she wasn't having fun with Josie and would have rather been anywhere else!

Actually, Spurgeon looks more like Ben in those photos than Jessa. You can see it in the eyes/eyebrows and nose (shape of the mouth too!). She just wants Spurge to take after her because he's undeniably cute.

I agree. I always thought Joe was very nice and considerate- he does seem to care for Kendra a lot and vice versa. If Kendra is not a woman that has easy pregnancies/doesnt want a baby every year Joe would be the husband that WOULD leave that up to her. I do not get the impression she would be afraid to speak her mind about an issue that was important to her for fear of Joe being upset, withholding affection etc.

Do you? I thought that was only in high school; I certainly didn't have to take a language for my journalism degree (in Canada). Then again, I guess it could be assumed that journalism majors are just fine with English.

I was just excited to see a little kid get a haircut. My niece is 5 and a half and still hasn't had a haircut. She looks like a ragamuffin all the time because you can't even get a brush through it anymore due to the split ends.

Correct. Not everyone in college needs or takes foreign  language. Engineering majors don.t. many of my offsprings friends APed in a foreign language which counts for an elective if the degree pgm doesn.t need it .

Jermey lack of using basic conversational spanish -after all this time is ( I had forgotten about the misson trips) what I was reffering to in an earlier post. If his ministry is to/for spanish speaking people out of respect he should learn the language.

I didn't take a language in college, and I double majored in special education. So I refused to take one on principle and instead loaded up on other stuff.

I have a BA in English and history, and a foreign language was required for both.  (B.S. degrees there did not need a foreign language.) I took a year of German, which means that every now and then during WWII movies I catch half of what the Germans are saying. LOL I also took a semester of reading French for grad school, which has proven even less useful since I didn't learn pronunciation, though it was fun.

Most people I know who have a B.A. took at least a year of some foreign language in college but have little retention. I agree with @sATL in finding it more odd that he's lived in an area with a substantial Spanish-speaking population and is in ministry and still seems to have made little progress.

I'm more and more convinced that Duggars only marry people who are just like them. Terminally lazy, terminally intellectually lazy, and utterly uninterested in any people other than themselves -- unless those people might be able to give them something.

There appears to be a Duggar bat signal for this so that even people who seem to the casual observer to be different at first -- looking at you, Der and Jer -- turn out to be this (in spades) after a year -- or less -- of marriage.

And the ironic thing is Derrick and Jeremy were the ones who went to college. I think Derrick and Jeremy wanted to hook up with a Duggar daughter in order to promote their ministry or missionary work. So far it has seem to work for Jeremy a little, but it turn out to be a big disaster for Derrick.

We don't know how it's worked out for Jeremy. He preaches out of a living room, and his live FB sermons draw fewer than 10 people. Yes, I was one for a few minutes a couple of weeks ago. He's trying to align himself with bigwigs from GCC, but there's no evidence that these preachers have mentored him.

I had to take a foreign language during my first two years at a community college in California in order to transfer to a California State University, as did all of my friends, regardless of their major.

I not only enjoyed my Spanish classes in both high school & college , but I am so thankful that I took them for my professional life.  I’m an English teacher in CA (credentialed K-12) and have used my Spanish not just to communicate with parents, but to also help my ALL of my students (including my English language learners) in class.

I’m not 100% bilingual and will often double check via Google translate before I make a phone call or speak in a meeting, but the parents appreciate my effort more than anything.

Jeremy needs to add “Spanish for Dummies” to his precious bookcases, along with some other resources/dictionaries to help him with his translation skills.

What speaks to his arrogance is that (at least on TV) he doesn’t seem concerned with learning how to communicate with those who are not English language speakers. I wonder how he even got hired in Laredo if he doesn’t even have speak basic Spanish? How is he supposed to be an effective pastor if he can’t communicate with so many people he comes into contact with whether it’s in Texas or on a mission? It speaks volumes (to me) about his ignorance and inability to understand the world around him. He’s not going to have a working phone in certain parts of the world to translate for him.

A foreign language was required for my BA as well (major public university). In the Texas Core Curriculum (credits toward an Associate's, guaranteed to transfer to public universities), it's not technically required, but it's in a required category, "Language, Philosophy, and Culture." I'd assume this is pretty common in other states, as well, at least for public institutions.

According to the internet, Jeremy graduated from Hartwick College (which is private) in 2010 with a degree in Business Administration. The current graduation requirements worksheet does mention a foreign language requirement (Spanish, German, or French). It's probably safe to assume that was the case when Jeremy matriculated, as well.

I can't believe I researched this.

Hence my refusal to take a language. I sat there arguing I could take 8 languages I'd never spoken a single word of in my life and wouldn't lend themselves to my future degrees, but I couldn't take the one the might have been useful. I don't know if things have changed since then, I graduated in 99, but I was pissed and stubborn and stuck to my guns. We spent about 4 weeks vaguely talking about and learning the basics of sign in one of my education classes and that that was it. I couldn't figure out a way to get any sign classes to actually count towards graduation, but I could take so many history classes that I was one semester away from a history minor. So very ridiculous.

A few questions/thoughts...

How many of he "Duggar Husbands" would be able to financially support their wives/family without their wives TLC $? Do the wives have to turn over their full paycheck to their husbands, and then get allowance back?

which marriages may not have happened without the show? (or if counting on was not a spin off)

When did the term "Godly Wife" really start to take off? I don't recall it being used until Jinger (Jeremy said it) and then adopted by Michelle for the most recent up and coming new wife...(gosh names....Laura?)

The use of "Babe"....did Jinger start that mess? It's just too "cute"

Jinger yelling Babe over and over during the bookshelf move, thinking plywood bookcase was somehow going to crack their bed. That's one fragile bed if that's the case.

and Jeremy's study. Yes, the bookshelves overwhelmed, the stain is heavy/dark for the room....needs different color on the walls, lost the curve/angles of the room by the window, and the desk is in competition. I think the carpenters did a great job, it's how it was ordered.

and last question/comment for this round...what in the world was the point of showing the painters the correct paint cans for different rooms? I believe everything I saw on the walls was same light grey? color? don't know what to call it, but it sure lacks warmth and individuality. Blech.  Maybe I missed a room that had a nice color, but that was some kinda fug, and floors...all I could think was it's warm in Texas so Jinger's bare feet will be comfy.

Annb67...you know what I think? Joy lost weight before her wedding. I believe she immediately started eating 'normally' on their honeymoon and went from there. She conceived before they even returned from their trips to Europe and Israel. It's a 'food baby' we saw immediately, not Giddyup that was making her blouse tighter. She also DID have a huge baby, so she blossomed earlier than normal, but not at 6 weeks. That's my take on it.

Yes. It was fun to speculate on whether she was pregnant ahead of the wedding, but she wasn't.

Maybe not. Unlike the creepy Gothard vows of Josh and Anna and I believe some of the others, Jeremy and Jinger did not put in their vows that they're "trusting god with the size of their family," nor have they discussed it. While Michaela Bates has spoken publicly about her fertility struggles, Jinger made no mention of her not becoming pregnant right away being something she was worried about. I suspect they did and will use birth control.

Eh, this is a stretch to me. How would it be all about her unless she was demanding oral for her and nothing else? That does not go along with her belief system. She's supposed to be "joyfully available" and he's a young guy. No reason to feel sorry for him.

Oh Lord, it's Jeremy and his book again.

He wants to be an intellectual so bad!

Too bad every one of those books is about fundamentalist Christianity and likely the denial of basic science.

As a journalism major in the US, I was required to take a foreign language. However, I got away without having to take a science course with a lab, which I now regret.

I believe that Daddy Vuolo got little Jeremy his 'job assignment' in Laredo. Jeremy has no seminary training or experience; little preparation across the board to be a pastor of anything if you ask me. I don't think any authentic preacher, pastor, minister or priest is prepared as quickly as Jeremy seemed to be. What was it, a matter of a few months, and poof, he was a pastor.

The church Jeremy is aligned with is not fundamentalist nor does it deny basic science.  Jinger made a move out of the IFB and Gothard world by marrying Jeremy.  That doesn't mean it's liberal, but conservative evangelical.

I'd be surprised if anybody in the family was getting oral.  I can just picture the expression on Jessa's face if Ben ever suggested that activity.
