S07.E13: I'm Beautiful, I'm Smart, I'm Strong

Recommended Posts

I'm getting an "editing shenanigans" vibe about Farrah's segment where she allegedly showed up on someone's doorstep asking to take a look AFTER being filmed remarking on a posted sign saying "DO NOT DISTURB OCCUPANT".  I have been around a LONG time and have never seen a sign like that, although nothing surprises me anymore and maybe that's a legitimate problem in LA (or wherever she was).  So, if we are to assume that Farrah was actually showing up at random houses for sale WITH A FILM CREW, why in the world would someone who apparently has requested this sign be posted even OPEN THE DOOR, let alone actually let the person in to look around???  Who knows, Farrah is a horrible enough human being that I wouldn't think it necessary to fabricate such a story line but . . . . ?

As for Amber taking Leah for a massage, I'm sure where Amber takes Leah for filming is completely based on where she can get comped for free services and be allowed to film.  I totally missed the door mat and that's another reason I love to come here - you guys watch much more closely than I do!  That's a great catch!

I'm sorry that Catelynn got to such a low point after the miscarriage but I don't think we will ever know the whole story about that visit to a "recovery" facility.

Maci, boring, and I was only half watching, did Taylor really spank his infant son on national TV?  Holy backlash, Batman!

You didn't? Its right up there with paint color as an immutable deal breaker. Seriously, Farrah is ridiculous. She's such a snob about the stupidest things--you could hear her disdain for the proles with the stackable washer/dryer! I will always treasure the memory of her looking at a house and saying how she needed room for their horse. And the real estate lady was an actual horsewoman and was dying to talk about horses and riding and stabling and Farrah was all "uh, uh, yeah, horsie". LOL.

Farrah. The rules do not apply to her.

Every time Amber uses that appalling moniker for her adorable daughter I die a little inside.

And do these people ever do anything but go to lunch at crap restaurants and get pedicures? Or in Amber's case, massages? She couldn't think of anything that Leah might enjoy? A movie? Shopping? A live performance? A cooking class? A sailing lesson? A museum? Horseback riding? Afternoon tea? Roller skating? Mini golf? Naw! A nine year old girl wants to lie down in a darkened room and have a stranger rub oil on her. Amber is the worst of all the terrible mothers on this show.

Right? What an absolutely awful gift of a day, for Leah.

All the things you mentioned are thing a 9 year old would enjoy.

As others have mentioned it's all about Amber.

My weekends are always busy because my son has autism and weekends with out his normal schedule means keeping him as active as possible  on weekends . Meltdowns happen but at least he's tired at the of the day, and sleeps well. So, during the week I am constantly looking for new activities for us. It's not that hard to find things to do.  Amber has money, cars and loads of time. I know she lives in Indiana,  but I live in Ohio and we stay busy on the weekends.

I couldn't imagine taking my son to a massage lol, not just because of his sensory issues, it's just bizarre to think a 9 year old girl would like it.

I definitely hear what you're saying, and it breaks my heart.  BUT...Cate was given a golden opportunity.  She & Ty had much adoration, especially at the beginning.  She *could've* built a semblance of a life for herself, and derived validation from that, no?  (ie going into social work or becoming an adoption counselor)

I might be judging too harshly here, but I don't have a shit-ton of patience for someone who just seems like an incredibly selfish mother

I do understand your view as well.  At what point do we take responsibility for our actions as adults?  I think it's far more complicated than either; 1. She can't help it at all or, 2. She should just get over it already.  Either way, to build herself up I think she's going to have to go back to a very basic level

The fact that Amber continues to do this even though it could follow Leah through school and cause public embarrassment just slays me. I'm starting to think that she just doesn't remember the kid's name.

...as if the POS Amber being your so called mother isn't enough embarrassment.

Amber wouldn't have to even haul her slothful ass out of bed to google "groupon activities" in her zip code. How is she so pig ignorant? She doesn't know how to talk to people. Her interactions with adorable baby Emilee were painful.

Also, in some cases you have rental tenants in a home that is being sold and they are still paying rent and have the right to privacy. You can't just show up whenever and expect for people to let you into their homes.

So, I'm on here with you all, avoiding work that I have. The tv is on in the background and The Chew comes on. They are talking about weddings and one of the hosts says if the people getting married  are great, you'll have fun, it will be a great time. The first thing I thought was Ryan and Mackenzie's sad wedding....and agreed with The Chew. Terrible people terrible wedding.

I know I’m not the only mental health clinician here. I’m so curious as to what others thought of her “I’m beautiful. I’m smart. I’m strong.” affirmation.

I’ll write in non-jargon for our non-clinical buddies....  The affirmation clues us directly into what her negative automatic thoughts are in that moment. “I’m ugly. I’m dumb. I’m weak.”  With the shitty treatment she received (Copy Room Kathleen, Sierra Tuscon) and her poor compliance, she’s only doing it half-right.  One, I would never have a client create an affirmation with the term “beautiful”.  We’d narrow it down to a specific health and wellness goal.  Strong, would be questionable for me as well.  Catelynn would benefit by repeating something like “Today, I worked towards my health goal of completing the 5K in April by walking 30 minutes on the treadmill at the gym. I’m committed to expanding my knowledge on the subject of horses by reading 3 articles this week. I already met my goal and I plan to read another interesting article I found later tonight. I am resilient because I am using my coping skills.”

Sierra Tuscon is such a waste and they don’t share their relapse rates. She is not learning how to use all these new skills in her home environment.

This is great insight, thank you.  I didn't realize, til now, how generic those affirmations sounded.  Does it sound to you then, like the treatment she got before was not specific to her?  Or even deep enough?  Those do seem superficial, and don't give her any sense of accomplishment of a job well done.  (On a side note, I had an uncle who was in and out of prison for 35 years due to drugs, theft, and all the other things that go with that.  He'd steal from his own family.  On his last stint in prison we had major wildfires and they used some prisoners to help fight the fires.  It saved him.  He'd never experienced the pride of a job well done and he realized he had a lot to contribute.  He finished his time in prison and has not been in any trouble for 25 years.  Totally different person, I consider myself lucky to know him!)  She does need specific tasks, rather than words!  Hopefully this place provides that.  But, like you said, she has a history of poor compliance, and that will be solely up to her.  That will show us how much she is willing to put into getting better.

Ok, So I am reading all these confessionals about nicknames like Monkey and alley cat---as if there is any comparison to Booger Butt. Every nick name other posters have said is kind of cute or charming in its own way. Calling your lovely little girl booger butt - essentially a green yellow wad of dried nasal waste in combination with butt - where poo comes out has to be the most disgusting "term of endearment" I have ever heard. It makes me want to gag when I hear/read it. Let's combine a term for dried mucas with the one body part associated primarily with shit and call our beloved child that. It' just about the trashiest thing ever, and I think it reveals a certain amount of disdain that Amber has for her child to call her something so vile. What's next  Fart Lips or Barf belly or Puke pants?

I totally agree. But I call my daughter "sauce bucket" (NO idea where that came from) and my sister said it sounds gross, like a puke bucket? LOL!

There's no interaction there! Half the time those things put people to sleep. She could have taken Leah to a ceramics or painting class. Something where they could work together and chat.

I totally agree that sauce bucket may sound like puke bucket to some, but sauce is in fact not puke. So, there is that. :-)))

And I thought I was the only one who had a whole series of whackadoodle nicknames for my child. He will be thrilled to know that Giggleberry Bones is right in there with the rest of them. ;-)

I think this is a huge problem with how mental health is viewed in this country.

"Most people" would do what now?  How does anyone know how "most people" handle anything?  This reminds me of cops who come to people's houses and decide someone's family member slaughtered them because he didn't cry hard enough or show the proper amount of emotion.  Cate had a miscarriage and from what I could tell it was for a kid she and Tyler desperately wanted.  I don't think "most people" would handle that by just popping into their therapist twice a week and then getting on with their lives.  Depression isn't something you handle when you get a minute.  It takes over every second of every minute of every hour of every day.  Which is where the disconnect comes in for those of us who don't suffer from it.  The going attitude "Everyone has shit to deal with, what is so bad that you can't get your shit together?" is annoying and unhelpful to people who know very well they are annoying the hell out of everyone around them but they just can't pick themselves up.  There is an underlying feeling of Cate having done this for attention and from what I saw, this was hardly a cry for attention.  She wasn't living life, she wasn't getting back up, she was failing to cope.  And she was talking about suicide.  And putting her in a hospital for two or three days may have made her feel better for those two or three days....and then what?

What is more disruptive to their daughter?  That her mother is gone for a month or that Nova walks into a room to see her mother crumpled on the floor in tears without warning every other day?

Every single friend I have ever known who has suffered a miscarriage suffers in silence because of this type of attitude and these types of judgmental questioning.  And I, for one, don't think someone has to show an appropriate amount of - whatever - in order to check out of their life for a minute and figure it out.  If you (I mean you in the general sense, not you as in YOU) don't get it, then don't get it...but stop making people feel like they are weak because of doing this.  It takes an INCREDIBLE amount of strength to admit you can't handle things.

I feel for Cate and for Tyler, because watching it happen to someone you love isn't any better than living it.  I wish them both healing.  It was hard to watch.

I've had a miscarriage. I've also suffered from depression and anxiety. I had cancer. Life comes at you fast, as they say. Probably one of the best things I ever did for myself was to go to daily group therapy for a few months (not related to the miscarriage) and dealt with my issues in a way that I was actually given tools to go home everyday and start using them. Catelynn may be depressed but she's also immature and spoiled and doesn't take care of herself until she suddenly has to be flown off to "treatment."

Hahaha, I call my son "you rotten ungrateful little bastard" and he calls me "you drunken witch of a mother" but he's 24, and we like to horrify people. He's great, of course, in every way. Never would I have taken him for a massage when he was a kid. We liked to go to shows (we saw STOMP! 3 times!), or to cool restaurants or just into Boston to hang out for the day, when he was a kid. Or even just make popcorn, curl up on the couch and binge watch shows that made us laugh. There are tons of fun things to do with your kid! And Leah's at such a fun age--I loved the elementary school years! I'd grab my son and a friend of his and we'd go get ice cream or go to the park or something, it was a blast! Kids are so funny and I always laughed myself silly. I almost (almost!) feel sorry for Amber. She derives no joy from her daughter. Or from anything in her life.

IDK - she seems to take great joy out of her multiple onesie pj’s she never takes off.

I am going to sound heartless, but it seems to me Catelynn has some kind of issue that she needs constant sympathy, attention and pity. If she starts to live just a normal life she freaks out and needs to have a meltdown so all attention is back on her.  I was 6mo pregnant when my baby was dx with anencephaly. I had to go to the hospital for a late term abortion, which is actually induced labor at 6mo along.  You can look up details if you need them, baby would have died moments after birth or stillborn. Talk about grief.  So imo C n T need to cry about their loss, revel in their blessings and get on with their family's life.  This show is harming almost everyone involved.

I agree to some point. Im sorry for what you went thru, but not everyone is the same. I honestly feel really bad for cait. This isnt just about the miscarriage, or tyler, or "stress". This woman has had some serious issues happen to her in her early young life and is clearly dealing with the aftermath now. You can see it in her face when shes crying that this is deeper than anything we can imagine. I have sympathy for caitlyn because i deal with anxiety...health anxiety to be exact, and even tho i try my hardest to control it, sometimes it just happens. And while everyone around me thinks like you...(ie "get a grip" or "geeezzz calm down") i can speak for myself and say its a hell of a lot easier said then done.

I do think this show has been incredibly damaging for most all of them. Chelsea is probably the only exception, maybe even Maci. I thought 16 and Pregnant was supposed to be a cautionary tale, but instead it's a blueprint. Most unwed teen moms do not go on to own multiple properties, Land Rovers, start their own businesses and walk the red carpet at MTV award shows.  MTV could have created trust funds for the children's college fund and allowed the parents to try to make it in the world just like the rest of us. MTV and the parents, all of them, even Chelsea, are exploiting their kids.

I have been thinking this same thought after seeing a few people comment on Farrah doing porn and being fired from MTV for it. It's completely legal but MTV needs to look back on why they created this show to begin with. It's no longer a cautionary tale. None of these women are doing anything to help prevent teen pregnancy. I remember when some of them would at least attempt speaking engagements and such. I feel like most of them are going to have a reality hit when the show ends.

Also, does anyone find it a little disturbing to get a massage with your 8-year old? I dont know if I would feel comfortable as the masseuse. Just sayin. Its too bad Amber cant find an activity where she actually engages with her child.

Detached quality time. That’s what it’s all about.

I wonder if Amber knows Leah’s favorite color, what she’s learning in any subjects in school? Has she assisted with any projects, book reports, gone to well or sick visits to the doctor?

Never mind, massage it is.

I believe she called the realtor pathetic?

That’s our Farrah! Don’t forget the stackable W/D killed the deal!

You shouldn’t roll into anybody’s house without an appointment unless it’s an open house. At least have your realtor with you. My first realtor 20-yrs ago made that mistake. Normally not a problem in Capitol Hill that most are gone during the weekday business hours (he didn’t read instructions that she worked from home). Realtors can access a lockbox around here. But Farrah apparently just marched up to the front door.

Funny thing is that was the house I bought - after she yelled at my realtor from the third floor and I went back to see it. We turned out being friends (she moved 8 blocks away).

When I was watching the Farrah story line, I just kept thinking it's time for this show to end. It's time for them to experience the real life...for their sake and the sake of their children.

Farrah is such a major asshole. If I was the owner of the house listed for sale, I would have told her to go away. I couldn't believe they let her in. If I was her real estate agent, I would've fired her.

Since MTV let the porn go previously, they are just using it as the final reason now. They have been over her shit for a while. They can't even film because of the SET teacher situation and her being a giant c**t about the SET teacher.  A total waste of production money.

They let her in and look what thanks they got!  She accused them of "staring at her tits" or something along those lines.  Her perception of reality is so warped.  I will say it ~ it seems her porn involvement is not healthy for her because she doesn't know when to turn off the sexuality.  She is hyper-sexual and it's weird.

I don’t think the situation has happened yet — but I do believe the injured party (even if it was Ryan driving while under the influence) would have a reasonable case against MTV/production for not stopping him AND filming him.

It looks like they now have a crew of 6 or 7 filming with each TM.  2 producers, location scout/PA, 2 cameras, sound and security - plus a set teacher when in California.

I'm not an attorney, but I've noticed the film crew talking to the cast in their cars when the car cameras are on.  So...

(We've got to be slightly more politely passive aggressive than the "Do Not Disturb Occupant" command that other parts of the country use in signage, because it's the South. Ha. I tend to think, though, that a southerner would have politely told Farrah where she & her camera crew could go if they showed up without an appointment.  Bless Farrah's heart and all.)

Yes!  You're right.  That is how we word it in the South.  We are about to list our home for sale, and it isn't going on the market until I'm cleared out of here.  I don't want to deal with shoppers, and we have achieved a stage in life where we don't have to. lol

I don't know how I would handle a Farrah type preening around, making petty critiques about my home.

I don't know how or why her  father deals with it. You see him throw his back and close his eyes as Farrah goes in on the producer about the teacher.  I guess,  he wants access to Sophia but I could not  be on camera with Farrah. Her treatment of people is so disgusting. I'd be embarrassed to be on camera with her.

I highly doubt he's being put on camera against his will, but even if he were, that doesn't explain his poorly crafted twitters in her defense, so I just have to conclude that he does all of this because he wants to.  There's something very wrong with every single person in that family, and I would even argue that wanting access to Sophia might be an indicator of that.

The cameras and money have allowed and encouraged them to wallow in their sense of wronged victimhood.  When Tyler said he just can't get a break, I was shocked. It is awful to lose a baby and it is awful to have to take a parent to rehab, but Tyler has gotten a huge break in the form of financial well being and a free trip to rehab for his dad because of the show.

But that huge break he got has altered his baseline, so he sees only the additive woes without really thinking about it.  We all have problems that make us feel beat down, even those of us who "shouldn't" because we're pretty or rich or successful or have been given a huge break.  I wouldn't trade places with Tyler, even with his huge break.

If someone got hurt in an accident, wouldn't MTV be sued for not stopping him from driving?

People can be sued for anything.  But they'll lose only if they have some sort of legal duty, and I can't imagine that MTV would in this case.  The only time I can think of that a third party is responsible for the harm a drunk driver causes is when dram shop laws that prohibit serving intoxicated people or minors come into play.  It's that act that sets up the responsibility.

If the "talent" were an employee of MTV, then maybe that would constitute a connection that leads to liability, but I'm very sure that MTV is very careful to ensure the "talent" are all independent contractors.

Good God, Farrah is a heinous bitch. Sophia will be worse because all she sees is her mother treating others like crap. She already parrots everything Farrah says, "I don't like David, I don't like the teacher."

And I know Farrah's porn career is legal and therefore in some people's eyes above reproach, but I just don't think that any sane person would think it's a good thing for a child to have a parent who does porn, much less is famous for it.  Is there any reason to think Sophia is going to parrot everything Farrah does, but somehow see a difference when it comes to porn?

And in that vein, I have no problem with MTV cutting ties because of it.  Apparently she stopped doing porn for a while, and has now started doing it again, and they don't want their show to be associated with it.  I find many of their shows skeevy and objectionable, but it's their line to draw if their contract covers them.  As far as I know, it's legal to do a lot of things that a TV show might not want to have associated with it.  Like being a white supremacist.  That's legal (not the same as committing illegal acts), but I can certainly see a TV show saying, "We don't want you on our show."

One, I would never have a client create an affirmation with the term “beautiful”.

That one in particular always bothers me because some, actually most, people simply aren't beautiful, and Catelynn is one of them.  And by "beautiful," I don't mean getting all dolled up, which is actually saying, "I'm not beautiful, but can be made to appear so."

So what good does it for a demonstrably not beautiful person to tell herself, "I'm beautiful?"  And I mean that especially if she knows she's not--that puts her in the position of knowing something but being told she's wrong.  What good does that do?

And Maci with her "I'm so glad the dad's here now.  I used to have to whip Bentley's ass and hug him at the same time."  So Taylor, the man, can do the ass whipping?  How about neither of you whips anybody's asses?

Tyler is so right, he just can’t catch a break.  I never really believed him when he said a while back that he feels depressed and is always taking care of Cate’s needs, but I sure believe him now.  There’s just no happiness in his life and he can’t leave because Cate & Nova need him but someone is always pulling him down and there’s no way out.  As for Farrah, since when does she hold the reigns and decide what producer she wants and belittles all the hands that feed her.  They let her get away with way too much and that is grounds enough to get rid of her.

I feel like MTV has done this to them.  If they'd had normal adolescences and had to go through all the things the rest of us do...high school graduations, working our way through college or vocational school (and sometimes falling flat on our faces during it; learning that we're not as big and bad as we thought we were), starting out in entry-level jobs...their development would have taken a more normal course and they would have learned how to be resilient and that when disappointment or tragedy strikes you can't just give in completely to those feelings and have the world stop revolving.  They're like hot house flowers who've never been exposed to the elements.

Having said that, however, my heart was breaking for Cate.  I, too, endured a miscarriage years ago.  I had to grieve a bit, heal a bit and then return to my working life.  Which actually helped...having the support of my co-workers and having something to take my mind off of it.  She really doesn't have anything else.

Maybe I'm an asshole but Catelynn needs to get a grip. I feel like they've gotten used to running off to "rehab" or "treatment" for every little thing which in some ways is not the best way to treat these things. If you are constantly removing yourself from your real life for weeks to months at a time, no wonder you can't deal with real life. People go through all sorts of things and get through them. This is another privilege their MTV salary gives them that actually does more damage than good. Just get a good therapist where you live and go see them a few times a week. And I am starting to feel a lot of sympathy for Tyler, he needs a break.

I totally agree that sauce bucket may sound like puke bucket to some, but sauce is in fact not puke. So, there is that. :-)))

And I thought I was the only one who had a whole series of whackadoodle nicknames for my child. He will be thrilled to know that Giggleberry Bones is right in there with the rest of them. ;-)

I call her "Saucy" for short. See? Even my nicknames have nicknames!!!!

This is a valid point. Obviously depression is different for everyone, and if someone is genuinely suicidal they need treatment first and foremost. But the lack of having anything to DO is not good for her. At all. Having a job can be a distraction, a way to keep going. Tyler seems able to keep busy without a conventional job. Cate doesn't know what to do with herself. It could be a chicken-egg situation with her depression, but I would think a GOOD therapist (not Kinkos Kathleen) would encourage a hobby at least, maybe even a job.

Hey Amber why don't you ask Leah what she'd like to do when you have "quality time"? A massage? A good massage is great but probably not at the top of a little girls list of fun stuff to do.

I know...right???  When I was a little girl the purest form of torture would be having to lay still for an hour.

My son died in his sleep. it was a complete surprise, there were zero signs that anything was wrong. Time was the only thing that helped with grief. I couldn't imagine if my entire livelihood swirled around me having to relive that moment over and over and over again. IMO, Cate and Tyler haven't been able to properly process or move on from the Carly adoption because they literally have to relive it and their feelings about it to get paychecks. Weird.

I am so sorry for your loss.  That was my worst fear when my kids were small.  I totally agree with your assessment of C&T's being stuck at that very sad place.

For the life of me I cant figure out what makes Farrah thinks she is entitled to talk to people the way she does. I mean Wtf was wrong with Producer Kristen asking Sophia if she had a nice flight? Or telling the other producer he is white trash while standing in front of a porta-john in her front yard with her fake hooker tits and bitch face on.

The wonderfully sweet ,talented and most of all classy Dolly Parton often jokes about her own appearance saying 'it costs a lot of money to look this cheap". Well Farrah proves that point well, while also proving money and fame does not buy you grace, smarts or kindness.

Dolly is one of my all time favorites, and last night for some reason I just thought Farrah would have probably thought that the extreme poverty, depression Era mountain upbringing of Dolly and her family would have made them "white trash" in her opinion. How deluded.

Besides letting off steam about FA, I wanted to share something funny I read. I'mean sorry I can't remember the title but Sunday night I saw a YouTube clip of one of Farrahs rampages about her treatment and lawsuit. In it she once again drones on about how BADLY SHE IS TREATED  (excuse me bitch!), but she says how she is glad Sophia is away from people who mistreat you and how she is raising her daughter to  AND I QUOTE "speak to everyone with kindness!!!" I nearly had a stroke!.

If u need a laugh look at some of the videos on FA's channel. There are a couple from the last week from TMZ and others where she is hanging out with some of her 'friends'. Now I don't know the women in the videos with her, but when Farrah spouts off about her and Mowgli getting away from Viacom/mtv Artifical fake world, all I can see is that two of her 'real' friends have such huge fake boobs I'm sure they have to wear little anchors down their backs to keep from keeling over.

Man I can't wait till she is gone, then I can stop getting tucked off and going off on a rant. I'm so glad you all are here.

Well, I don't see how they could not stare at her tits--they precede her into a room by at least 5 minutes,

Everybody knows that she wants everyone to stare at her huge fake tits. She thinks it's the tits that make the woman.
