Before the Thunder: Spoilers and Speculation

Recommended Posts

Another season premiere photo and a few quotes from Krondon at EW:

Quote

“He’s in what they call solitary confinement,” Marvin “Krondon” Jones III tells EW. “There’s a whole new layer that’s been added to the character. There’s a whole new dynamic being added.”

Although Jones couldn’t share why Issa, of all people, is visiting the crime boss, the actor did open up about how much he’s enjoying exploring his character in this new environment. “We’ve been having fun for the first two seasons and wreaking a lot of mayhem, but it’s good to change it up a little bit for just me and my character play,” Jones tells EW. “At the same time, it’s also very humbling and sort of depressing, to be honest, getting to a point where you’re on top of the world — you have everything going for you, you’re in possession of the briefcase — and then to end up getting zapped by Lightning at the end. [With] what my fate ended up [being] in the last episode, I’ve had a lot to think about — about the things that I’ve done and the karma that entails with that. But we shall see the conclusion the mind comes to for season 3.”

Tobias may be down, but don’t count him out. “A person like Tobias is so resilient,” says Jones. “If you take one strength from him, he’s going to find another strength. If you take one thing, he’s going to find another thing to utilized and manipulate to his advantage.”

"The Book of Occupation: Chapter One: Birth of Blackbird"

SEASON PREMIERE - We find Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) like never before, in the hands of the ASA with his wife Lynn (Christine Adams) as Agent Odell (guest star Bill Duke) tightens his grip on the Pierce family, leaving Jennifer (China Ann McClain) abandoned and Freeland without Black Lightning and Thunder. But Anissa (Nafessa Williams) secretly defies Odell in her alter ego as Blackbird with the able tactical and technical support of Gambi (James Remar). Marvin Jones III and Damon Gupton also star.

Directed and written by Salim Akil

(#301). Original airdate 10/7/2019.

----

So Jefferson is in ASA custody... willingly? Because otherwise the rest of the family would be trying to break him out, but it doesn't sound like that is happening. At least not yet.

Not liking "Jennifer abandoned", because that just means she have to find someone (something?) else to fill the void of her family, and we know that Khalil is coming back.

Speaking of Khalil -- why would the ASA(?) save him, anyway? How useful is he without a spine? And he wasn't really a metahuman.

I just remembered that Issa's power is to compel people to tell the truth; so maybe this is actually an interrogation... arranged by Odell?

I really wonder what are they doing with Grace? Is she completely removed from her comic origins?

It really seems so.

LOL! Is it even possible to have a comic book relationship without 'strain'? Well I wish they had focused a little more on Jeff/Lynn last season, so this could resonate more.

Casting news:

Quote

Wayne Brady will be looking to make a deal with the metahumans of Freeland, in a recurring role on The CW’s Black Lightning.

TVLine has learned that the game show host and Emmy-winning Whose Line Is It Anyway? improv artist is set to play the DC Comics character of Tyson “Gravedigger” Sykes, who will first air in early 2020.

“Gravedigger” is described as a World War II-era member of the U.S. military who became a “supersoldier” after a secret experiment gifted him with enhanced strength, agility, tactical genius and hand-to-hand combat expertise. After the war, Sykes defected to the country of Markovia rather than return to a segregated America.

Sykes’ aim to create a sovereign land for metahumans within Markovia will set him on a collision course with both the ASA and Black Lightning.

Gotta say, when I hear 'super soldier', I don't think Wayne Brady.

Like your other fellow DC shows, Black Lightning will be involved with the big “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover in some way. We know Jefferson will be involved. Will you and Anissa?

The daughters are definitely going to be involved in the crossover in some sort of way. We're not going to be in the Flash episode. But, yes, here in Freeland, we're going to be dealing with the effects of “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” And not just our family. It's going to be bigger than that.

I will say that this event is leading to something. It's not just a crossover episode. Things are going to change after this crossover in a very big way.

Eh - I don't really want this show connected to the others.

In theory; I don't see entire characters crossing over (either way). Maybe mentions like, "I got [this piece of tech that solves our problem] from Cisco". I'm open to them surprising me, but I'm not expecting anything.

I think just from a superhero/meta/alien feel. Everyone that we know from main DC are just comics in BL world currently. Metas are very small and few with greenlight, now they can open it to like Vixen and other notable DC heroes showing up.

3.07 and 3.08 synopses:

Quote

"The Book of Resistance: Chapter Two" - (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET) (TV-14, LV) (HDTV)

ANISSA REACHES OUT TO JEFFERSON FOR HELP - Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jefferson (Cress Williams) have a heart-to-heart and she tells him she needs Black Lightning's help in escorting meta refugees out of the perimeter. Meanwhile, Gambi (James Remar) implores Lynn (Christine Adams) to help get him access to the Pit. Lastly, Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grows closer to Brandon (guest star Jahking Guilory). Marvin Jones III, Damon Gupton and Jordan Calloway also star.

Oz Scott directed the episode written by Lynelle White (#307). Original airdate 11/25/2019.

Oh, Brandon is that guy's name? Gotta try to remember that. Is Gambi going to find out about Lynn's addiction before Jefferson? That would suck.

Quote

"The Book of Resistance: Chapter Three: Pale Horse" - (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET) (TV-14, DLV) (HDTV)

RESISTANCE - Black Lightning (Cress Williams) goes up against the ASA. Meanwhile, Tobias (Marvin Jones III) continues to manipulate Lynn (Christine Adams). Nafessa Williams, China Anne McClain, James Remar, Damon Gupton and Jordan Calloway also star.

Neema Barnette directed the episode written by Jake Waller (#308). Original airdate 12/2/2019.

Very vague. I think this is the mid-season finale.

I can’t see any of the other Arrowverse characters fitting in in Freeland. Maybe Arrow characters, I don’t know about the spin-off. Though I would like Anissa to show up in one of the big crossovers because I think it’d be cool to see her in a big fight scene.

The Batwoman episode of the crossover is airing in that time slot the week after, so it makes sense for the 12/2/19 episode to be the mid season finale.

Yeah, I was a little surprised at that. Because I'm 85% sure that the show will not be referencing or connected to the crossover, at least not before Crisis.

That would be a nice surprise, though, and makes sense with it airing the same night as the crossover.

Spoiler

Maybe they could CGI it, but I highly doubt anyone from the 'greater Arrow-verse' is showing up on Black Lightning's sets. If anything, maybe they filmed something during crossover filming and tacked it to the end of the BL episode?

I was just thinking that the episode might end with the sky ominously turning red over Freeland. That’s just something they could do in post production.

Wayne Brady told our Kim Roots of his upcoming arc as “Gravedigger” Sykes, “In 20 years on TV, this is the coolest character that I’ve been allowed to play,” describing the CW series’ take on the DC Comics character as “basically the black Captain America. He received his powers in very much the same way … but under duress and under very different circumstances.” Gravedigger, of course, arrives with an agenda that will pit him against both Black Lightning and the ASA. “He’s being called a villain,” notes Brady, “but ‘villain’ is in the eye of the beholder.”

So, what can we expect from the after-effects of Crisis on Infinite Earths to be for the Pierce family and citizens of Freeland? Williams said:
“Um, you know, it’s a new normal. I can’t say much, but I will say that in our reality, we were the heroes and all those other infamous heroes were just in comic books. So, that’s different now.”

...

Lastly, Lynn & Jefferson haven’t really been on the same page, and Lynn is hiding a lot of secrets, on if and when we will see that come to ahead, he quipped:
“it’s going to come to a head, but I couldn’t even spoil it for you because we haven’t gotten to the resolution of it yet. But there is going to be a confrontation.”
