Huh.
Well, maybe they will retool it.

 I won’t be tuning in if Niecy Nash plays her character in the way it was on the recent Rookie two-parter.  If they retool it and you guys like it, I might give it a try.  But I’m not optimistic.  I haven’t loved the direction the main Rookie has been going.  It’s lost some of its spark IMO.

ABC 2022-23 Fall Schedule Has ‘Bachelor In Paradise’, ‘Abbott’ & ‘Big Sky’ Move, ‘AMLT’ & ‘Wonder Years’ Held

10 PM — THE ROOKIE: FEDS

9 PM — Celebrity Wheel of Fortune
10 PM — The Rookie

“One of our strategies and themes for the fall was stability, which allows us to focus on a few key priorities, so keeping The Rookie in its Sunday time slot where it has been performing extremely well, especially coming out of Idol, we think the show will continue to grow in the numbers, it felt like the right thing to do, and because it’s on Sunday night, we could message and kick it off and still do incredible crossovers on Tuesday,” [ABC Entertainment President Craig] Erwich said. “And then we look at Bachelor in Paradise, I do believe it will be one of the strongest opportunities of a lead-in for any new show. The Rookie: Feds is a huge priority for us, so it felt like we wanted to give the show that opportunity.”

The Rookie and The Rookie: Feds stars Nathan Fillion and Niecy Nash interrogate each other

NASH: John Nolan gets to become a training agent this season. Talk to me about how you felt about that. And what is that going to look like?
FILLION:
Yes, John is going to be a training officer. Training officers were certainly a big part of the start of his career and how he started being a cop. It's the next logical development in his career. He wants to be a training officer because he wants to give back. Also, because he sees that there needs to be some changes in the department, and he wants to be a part of that change. He feels that's the best place he can do it. Thirdly, and probably the most important reason, is all the people that come up to me and go, "Hey, how long is Nolan going to be a rookie?" They're really concerned about whether or not he's a rookie. When you advance in your career and you're doing a new thing, you're automatically a rookie all over again. It's more of a metaphor, I guess.
*  *  *
NASH: How hard is it for both John and you, Nathan, shipping Chenford?
FILLION:
Oh my gosh. Okay. I don't get really down into popcorn eating of my own show and get like, "Oh my God, what's going to happen?" I don't do that all the time. But I got to say the Tim [Eric Winter] and Lucy [Melissa O'Neil] stuff, the Chenford relationship, is one of those things where even if you were there on the day watching them film it, you're never going to get that story that cameras can tell when they get in real tight. Add on the edit, the music, there is so much happening there. It gets a little steamy at times. You're going, "How are they going to explain this to everybody?" You start getting riled up. You really do. I have a really good time with that. I don't think John cares. He hasn't really noticed what's going on on the side. These two have been pretty sneaky. Maybe people close to them are starting to notice some stuff, but John is so clueless right now.
*  *  *
FILLION:
My dream is to pull people from every job I've ever done and have them guest on The Rookie — that meta stuff really excites me. I've had a couple of people on here from Firefly. I've had a couple of people on from Castle. I'd like to do a circle back to the beginning of my career, One Life to Live.

The Rookie Boss on the Season 5 Premiere's Most Shocking #Chenford Twist Yet and What Happens Next
By Matt Webb Mitovich / September 25 2022
https://tvline.com/2022/09/25/the-rookie-recap-season-5-episode-1-chenford-sex-interrupted-death/

Quote

Taking “Chenford” this far in the Season 5 premiere “felt like the organic place to go,” showrunner Alexi Hawley tells TVLine. “The reality of it is when he was her direct supervisor, there was no way [to go there]. Even now, we’re in a place where there is a discrepancy in terms of rank, so that still is an issue, but it did feel like we were building to this place where it felt organic to push it.”

The Season 4 finale’s doppelgänger twist, which paved the way for Tim and Lucy to pose as a criminal couple, “allowed us to let some things that the audience completely saw under the surface come up,” Hawley noted, “and now we’re at a place where we can’t ignore it. So this season, we definitely have to lean in to whatever it’s going to be, the next stage of this.”
*  *  *
“Rosalind was mad at Lucy for not showing up in court and not playing her game…,” Hawley says of Dyer’s agenda. “That was her way of getting back at Lucy. And it also was a pretty brutal obstacle to throw in Chenford’s way.”

Whatever Chris’ fate turns out to be, “there’s going to be a great sense of guilt” for Lucy, who takes the blame for him being targeted. “Rosalind only chose Chris because of Lucy, so that’s definitely going to have an impact,” says Hawley.

Will a shaken Lucy compartmentalize what was about to transpire between her and Tim, as she processes what happened to Chris? “It’ll definitely have an impact on her point of view on what she was about to do with Tim,” Hawley previews. “That is something she’ll have to navigate — that shocking reality, or splash of cold water” on an intimate moment.
*  *  *
What kind of TO will Nolan be, once his new gig kicks in with Episode 3 (and following a modest time jump)? Will he take any cues from Tim, Nyla, Angela or Talia when breaking in his first boot?

“I do think that Nolan at heart is an empathetic person — he’s a listener, he’s a question-asker — so I don’t think anybody would believe him as a hard-ass like Tim,” says Hawley. “But there is this line of being too nice or too willing to give the benefit of a doubt on a job when s–t can come out of nowhere and turn everything upside-down.

“We’re going to throw a lot at him,” Hawley shares, which will raise the question: “How do you train somebody when chaos is happening?"

‘The Rookie’ EP on What’s Next for Chenford — And Could the ‘Feds’ Catch Rosalind?

OK let’s just get to the Chenford stuff, because you walk a very, very thin line there of making them cheaters, How much discussion was there of “How close can we get them to this?” What happens at the very end is the only thing that stops them from going into a very gray area.
Alexi Hawley:
Yeah. Yeah. I think so. I mean, look, you know…the way we left last season with the kiss? That was supposed to be perfunctory, but it really opened up a door that the audience has wanted us to open for a long time. It felt like we needed to play through that. Lucy tried to deny it in the hotel room talking about how it’s just a biological fact. With that kind of intimacy, if you don’t feel something, you’re dead. And yeah, there was that sort of suspended moment in time at the end where they almost did something, which will have very real percussions, given the cliffhanger and the Chris of it all.

Obviously, Lucy’s gonna feel incredibly guilty since, you know, Rosalyn targeted Chris because she didn’t testify and because she wasn’t playing Rosalyn’s game. How could she not feel incredibly guilty and conflicted about that?
*  *  *
Now, why have Tim be the one who brings up the potential feelings between them? He’s usually the one who’s more buttoned-up than the two.
Well, yes. Although he was the one who spoke to Lopez about it right at the beginning. He brings it up and she sees right through it. She’s like, “Why are we talking about this if it’s not a thing?” [Laughs] So what I love is that it is actually Tim who has been the most affected by it. And to have that moment in the plane where she’s like, “We’re supposed to be hooking up in here” and she just dives in there and messes him up…he’s a little stunned at the end. I thought that was really great. That was a little unexpected, but we know it’s real if Tim can’t deny it.

I need to applaud you for both not going the expected route when they heard that Rosalind escaped and for acknowledging how great they are at this undercover thing. They didn’t show their hand at all. No furtive glances or stammering. And when Tim says, “You’re really good at this,” I had already been thinking that they both were!
Yeah. I mean, I thought that was such a great moment. When we were breaking the story, that was just such a great twist. What would it do to Lucy when she finds that out in the middle of an operation where she’s undercover that Rosalind has escaped? We go into a bit of a bubble on her as she’s processing it and that’s why Tim pulls her to the bathroom. Because he knows she’s on her heels a little bit. I just felt like a really great way to put them in jeopardy in the middle of an operation.

You also showed us the emotional shorthand that they have without having to signal one another.
Exactly. He just knows. And look, part of why the audience loves them together is that there is an understanding. As different as they are—and they are very different—there is a shorthand, there is a connection between them and that’s why they’re so good together.

How much is this gonna spin her out going forward? Because I know that she’s going to head into undercover training, correct?
Yeah, she’s done some and we are going to do a little bit more coming up. And you know, I do think that this is gonna spin her out. The fun of her undercover experience is that she has learned what she doesn’t know, you know? We’d sort of set her up when Harper took her under her wing back in Season 3. Just that realization that being an undercover cop, to be good at it takes a lot of training and a lot of work. It’s not easy. They actually have an undercover school that you go to, but it is, it’s hard to get in and you have to be invited and all that kind of stuff. And so we’re definitely gonna play that out a little bit more. And then yeah, she’ll totally be spun out. I mean, again, Chris was targeted because of her and that’s gonna have an impact.

And does this mean that Tim then goes back to his old relationship and tries to make it work while she’s working through stuff?
Well, look as he says in the episode, he’s dating Ashley and Lucy’s dating Chris and that hasn’t changed, right? So, as you said, they got to the edge of doing something that was morally a problem, and yeah, they’ll have to look at that in the cold hard light of day.

Will we learn more about or explore Tim’s backstory/family this season on The Rookie? –Ashley

In a word, yep! “We love Peyton List, who plays his sister, so she’ll come back, and we’ll dive into that a bit more,” showrunner Alexi Hawley told me. “Ultimately, there’ll be Dads house to sell, so, ‘What is that like?’ Yes, we’ll definitely keep going with Tim’s backstory.” Bonus scoop for Inside Line emailer Bonnie: Helena Mattsson will be back as Ashley.

Legends of Tomorrow fan here! Any scoop on Lisseth Chavez’s Rookie debut? –Claire

Chavez first appears this Sunday as Celina, a new rookie whose unconventional approach to police work will pose a unique challenge for her training officer — meaning, Nolan. “I’ve been saying from the very beginning, ‘How do you keep it The Rookie?'” as Nolan graduates to T.O., says showrunner Alexi Hawley. “But he is going to become the oldest rookie training officer, right? And it won’t go great at first. He’ll have a rookie that’s very challenging to him and who will have him on his heels. With any new job, things come at you 100 mph. It’s just different.”

What casino was The Rookie‘s Season 5 premiere filmed in? –Jim

So ABC thinks it's a good idea to put this line-up against CBS' FBI lineup?  Interesting.

Though I've seen enough comments about folks who don't care for FBI: International and who also don't care for Rookie: Feds, it'll be interesting to see a ratings comparison between those two.

I guess the schedule released by ABC for the winter schedule makes sense in putting both Rookie shows together.

But Tuesday? Maybe I'll be wrong, but putting them against the FBI franchise on CBS seems like a mistake waiting to happen. (I am a viewer of that, too.) As the shows are similar, I imagine it would overlap. Add in that Tuesday has been an issue for ABC for years - so much so, it is why The Rookie was moved to Sundays early on! - and I truly don't understand the thinking of TPTB over at ABC.

Looks like The Rookie is about to become a "watch after FBI show(s)", at least for me.

The question becomes which objection is greater, that against the imperial Americans running around Europe pointing guns at citizens of other nations or the farce that seems to make a mockery of professional standards.

I don't stay up for live watching of Neicy but have those more political ick factor objections to FBI International

Midseason Ratings Report Card: ABC's Best and Worst Performing Shows

Listed below is the average DEMO RATING for each ABC series (including Live+7 DVR playback). Alongside that is the TOTAL AUDIENCE for each program, as well as any noteworthy PERFORMANCE NOTES.

Each program’s RANK represents how it is faring in the coveted-yet-dwindling 18-49 demo compared to other shows on ABC, since that’s what matters come renewal/cancellation time; any ties in the demo were “broken” by total viewership.
*  *  *
THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: First thing you have to notice is The Rookie leaping from being ABC’s #5 show in audience to the top spot, just barely besting The Good Doctor. The Thursday vets are unarguably aging now, with Grey’s and Station 19 losing audience as well down dropping 25% and 22% in the demo. The Rookie: Feds as a spinoff drew much early-season attention, including for its DVR gains, but the bigger story is perhaps what Alaska Daily has quietly been doing on Thursdays, matching its lead-in’s audience (though clearly skewing older). Lastly, have you been missing DWTS since its move to Disney+? Because ABC Monday absolutely is!

ABC’s The Rookie and The Rookie: Feds both saw significant gains with their new, Tuesday team-up, while CBS’ FBI copped the night’s biggest audience.

ABC | The Rookie drew 4.7 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating (per Nielsen finals), surging to its largest audience audience since May 3, 2020 (!) and its highest demo number since May 9, 2021. TVLine readers gave the episode an average grade of “A,” read recap. Feds in turn rose to series highs of 3.8 mil/0.4. The final in the key demo was actually 0.64 beating out CBS in the key demos for the night.  Everyone at ABC must be ecstatic with the Rookie's performance on its new night.

After being on the cancellation bubble for most of season 1 , then moving to what was considered a death time slot at 10 p.m. on Sunday nights, the Rookie has survived multiple seasons facing stiff competition the last few seasons.  And now it's likely going to be renewed for a 6th season.  I never thought it would last this long.

Congrats to NF for having back to back successful TV shows on ABC.

Yeah, a .64 in the key demo is outstanding. Easy renewal with those numbers for sure, barring unforeseen complications of course. It's also a series that will do really well in syndication so yeah, bump up the episode count and keep 'em coming.

HONORABLE MENTION | There are two big reasons why The Rookie‘s “Chenford” works: Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter. From Day 1, even when “boot” Lucy was getting chided on the regular by TO Tim, the actors exhibited an easy chemistry that the writers clearly saw and could not ignore. Years and multiple cop-blocks later, this Tuesday we arrived at Lucy and Tim’s first date, and while one might have initially groaned at the “Look at How Awkward This Is, Friends Being Romantic!” trope, O’Neill and Winter elevated it with sweetness and warmth. But O’Neil and Winter bring more than heat. A big draw with #Chenford is the rom-com moments they share, whether brainstorming, perfectly in synch, a cover story for their rendezvous, or mentally jabbing at each other in the hallway. Add in a food truck do-over date, where the menu included a perfect first kiss, and you had one of O’Neil and Winter’s finest showcases.
