I guess I am not smart enough for this show, and the flashbacks and imaginary scenes do not help. How did Abby die? Did she commit suicide or did she die in Las Vegas by convulsion that was caused by untreated head trauma happened in their vehicle accident?

Committed suicide, at home, with pills.

I wondered about this too. There is a Sloan Kettring in Los Angeles, but maybe the actual surgery takes place in New York (only one specialist/team). Maybe the the blond kid is from LA but moved to New York?

It seems like the writers picked New York so Ray would be out of communication for a day so Abby could commit suicide with some time to spare. What I want to know is how Abby got 90 Seconal so soon after filling the last one.

I think Abby mentioned in passing that the doctor agreed to refill the prescription after learning that Ray had flushed the first RX down the toilet.

That's the first thing that Kelly Ripa said when she interviewed him on her show. He also looks so good in his suits. I was noticing he always has an abundance of pressed white shirts (as the RD character)

I think he even has a stash in the trunk of his car.

That's fine, I'll certainly share! He's got plenty to go around. Damn that is one hunk of a man, and what kills me is that he really isn't that handsome, he's just got tons of "appeal".  Tell you this, this series doesn't really show it, but Liev is a wonderful actor.

@atlantaloves I think his sex appeal to women lies in the fact that he's so masculine. He has a deep commanding voice, and is certainly knocking this character out of the ballpark. I hope that he gets the Emmy next year.

His RD character would be a scary man to me. Hard to trust and wouldn't want a man that had a life that he couldn't share with me. (I don't mean that I'd need to know every last detail of what he does or is doing. I mean that he can't share his criminality and that it overshadows his life in such a way that there's little or opportunities for him to be warm and romantic. Constantly brooding.) That being said women love a bad guy.

Just gonna add to the Liev fan club here - his eyes.  Swoon.

This was such a great show.  Why are so many series becoming so sad and depressing?

[Interior: Showtime production office]

Exec1: People, Donovan show needs new ideas...Focus group says "Too Depressing"

Exec2: That's So Ray...He learns how to be a better father and son every week....

Exec1: ..after killing somebody....

Exec2: Of course....totally justified...

I THINK this is right:  Abby was dying of cancer (possibly of the brain, possibly because her untreated breast cancer had metasticized).  The convulsion in Las Vegas was a result of her illness, not of the head tauma in the car crash.  When Abby did not get into the clinical trial  - and she seemed far too advanced in her disease to be accepted by, let alone survive a clinical trial - she decided she wanted to be able to die when and how she chose.  After the bar opening she took the sleeping pills that killed her.

So the ER scene in Las Vegas where the physician was grim in informing Ray what happened, Abby was not dead?

No.  I think they probably learned it had spread into her brain at that point, since she was hearing and seeing things.

I'm out numbered here, but I love ray. He mostly only hurts bad people and always takes care of his messed up family.

Hes been dealt a bad hand but always tries to help others.

Except knocking Cancer Boy out of the trial is exponentially worse than just negative 1 in the karma ledger...it cancels out most of his good deeds to date... If the kid was a scumbag drug dealer or rapist or some other felon, then he deserved meningitis...otherwise, Ray crossed the line...

Ray does look great in his suits, but the extreme skinny style of his pants show he's a bit bow-legged.  I've never really noticed it until this season.

I saw that too and also thought that he doesn't always stand as tall (straight, shoulders back) as he used to. His character is starting to look more defeated (for the lack of a better word).

Very dark - made me cry!! Now we know why Ray was charged regarding a family fight. Wow.

It made me ugly cry.  I thought the whole bar scene to death were absolutely beautiful.  Abby managed to acknowledge and praise everyone there.  Ray missed it, of course.  Even it he weren't off trying to "save" Abby's life, he would have missed it (probably off fucking the neighbor).   I thought Paula, Eddie, and Kerris, were perfection.  Abby knew who she could depend on, who she could trust, and it wasn't her husband.  Ray ruined everything, in my opinion.  Rushing in and wailing over Abby's body.  Screaming at his vulnerable daughter.  Expecting his father and brothers to stand back while he abused Bridget.  Usually Ray's torment moves me because Liev is that good, but fuck Ray.  His torment is of his own creation at this point.

Ray would kill anyone for Abby, he would break any law, do any dirty deed.  But he couldn't be faithful, he couldn't honor her wishes, and he couldn't actually be there when she needed him.  Yet Abby is somehow always the bad guy, and Ray is the poor sap having to deal with the filthy-mouthed hag.

Ray seems to have a real Madonna/Whore complex.  Bridget and Abby fall into Madonna - he treats Bridg like a perpetual five year old, and Abby is on a pedestal and last woman he has sex with.  While all the women he bangs fall into the whore category, they're also vulnerable females who must be rescued by heroic Ray.  Notice that it was a male Ray injected with meningitis.  He sees men as fair game (unless they're family) and all women are fragile, weak, and need to be protected.

Mostly. I do think that he regards Lena differently and now maybe the Susan Sarandon character (time will tell).

This episode was actually surprisingly moving and almost makes up for the disjointed mess the rest of the season has been up til now.

1. Great performances all around. Knocked it out of the park. I've never been a fan of Abby but Paula Malcomson really brought it. Fair play.

2. Ray is an absolute shit bag. As much as he's always been the anti-hero on this show, his actions since Abby's more recent diagnosis have been nothing short of vile. He is a sociopathic narcissist. I don't know what's worse - poisoning cancer victims or banging your neighbor after your wife pleads with you to spend some time with your family while she is DYING. Fuck him.

Except for that Mossad agent.

Just playing devil's advocate~

Abby knew Ray was leaving.  She may have had the bar party knowing he was not going to be around.

Ray was upset at Abby's suicide but remember, Bridget was the only other person in the house when he arrived.  Under the circumstances, he rightly figured Bridget helped Abby kill herself.  He was not aware of Terry's role at all.  (I also find it very odd that Terry left the kid alone with her mother's body.  I can see going downstairs and giving her some private time but to leave her alone?  No.)

You have me on your side.  We get to see Ray and all of his messes and to him, this stuff makes sense.  We can't force Ray to be the guy we think he should be.  He was molested by a priest, his mom died of cancer, he father is a shit.  He - and we - are all damaged goods.
