Acclaimed violinist Lindsey Stirling used her classical violin training to leap through the music industry with almost 10 million YouTube subscribers, over 1.9 billion views on her YouTube channel, two Billboard Music Awards and sold out tours worldwide. Now Lindsey is putting down the violin for a spell to step onto the dance floor with partner Mark Ballas.

How is Mark, the choreographer probably best suited to her own self defined "out of the box" style, a disappointment?

She will be fabulous. My only concern is the show hasn't even started and I've heard her pushing how she and Mark are the out of the box different couple a few times already.

The we're oh so different shtick might get old.

That concerns me a little too. The demographic as a whole doesn't really appreciate "out-of-the-box" in large doses and will give the edge to the more traditional couples.

I worry it might be like Season 12, where I thought Chelsea Kane was the best dancer and Mark IMO did excellent choreography (that still holds up to me as some of the best he's ever done), but because of their "edgy, out-of-the-box" reputation, the audience preferred Hines, Kirstie, even Ralph Macchio so much more that the show had to resort to the blatant Winner-Takes-All challenge to even get them into the finale.

I'm going to argue this slightly. I don't think the problem was that Chelsea/Mark were so edgy and different. I don't even think Chelsea/Mark were that edgy.  My issue with them is they consistently told me how hip and edgy and how young and fun they were as compared to everyone else.  Be what you want to be.  Don't just tell me repeatedly how crazy and rebellious you are.  If you have to keep saying it, you probably aren't what you think you are. I think that season people just didn't latch on to Chelsea, nor was there much appreciation for how hard the judges pushed her.

I think Mark doing his creative thing is a good thing.  I just don't need them to keep telling me how wacky are different they are.  But all of this is moot at this point since the show hasn't even started yet and is just based on a couple of interviews/posts.

Agree that that some of Chelsea's dances belong among the best Mark has produced for this show. He was rightly nominated for an Emmy that season. And I think they were a good pairing in general. But Mark's attitude that season wasn't so awesome. Like, I can understand why it happened (you have a breakthrough as a choreographer and are producing some of the best stuff of your career so far....and the judges are bashing you for it in front of millions of viewers every week, while praising you for your brilliance in private. It has to be super frustrating. Derek has told similar stories.), but it sure was annoying to watch. And that freestyle is perhaps the worst thing he's ever done on DWTS IMO, such a self-indulgent mess.

What all of that did for Chelsea, I'm not sure. Yeah, she was the best dancer. But when was that ever relevant? I have the suspicion that with another pro perhaps she would have faded into the background as just another Disney kid, pleasant but generic?  So Mark might have turned some viewers off her, but otoh he also made her memorable and she was a stand-out performance every week. Here we are, years later still talking about it. (-;

I'm excited what they'll produce together with Lindsey. Hopefully they won't push the "edgy" narrative too hard. If Mark never says "out of the box" ever again, I wouldn't mind. (-;

She looks about as out-side the box as a kindergarten teacher.

^^Have tickets for the NY show.  Can't wait!  It will be my second time seeing Alexander Jean live; and first time seeing Lindsey live.

That'll be fun! I've just picked up a couple of Lindsey's cds - love them!  Of course Mark is an amazing guitarist.  Maybe they'll do a duet.

They've been doing covers together on social media which have all been really great. I've been really enjoying them.

I would like to go on record to state that I posted Lindsey's "Arena" video solely as a means of explaining why some kept calling her a ringer on very little evidence, and moreso to illustrate how limited that training was. I think I regret this now.

That video is popular so others like me knew about it before you posted.  I haven't watch last night's show yet so I can't comment on what Mark said.  On last week's thread, I did post that I think it was unfair to Lindsey to be lumped in with Jordan.  It was the pros and celebs that did that in their packages.  She had dance experience not dance training, e.g. learning choreography, while Jordan did have dance training.
