Recommended Posts

With only the best of the best remaining in the competition, the dancers show America why they belong in the Final Four.

Jenna's no tear crying was so fake.

I feel the Lex/Taylor relationship is all just to sell the dance.  I call BS.

Yeah, if you follow them on social media, they've been together for a while. Many months at least. But I agree they don't seem to have chemistry. Lex is pretty awkward ?

Boy, they sure worked at making sure that we knew Lex could emote.

They also did a fair amount of covering up for Kiki, but I have to admit that he did a totally tolerable job of that hiphop with Lex.  I actually watched Kiki (he has lost weight in his face over the competition, hasn't he?)

I thought the four elements thing was mostly not very good to Kiki or Koine, but quite good for Lex and Taylor.

Jenna made me turn the channel with the fake crying.  That was fucking gross.

That Broadway number with Lex and Koine was all kinds of awesome.

That opening Nappytabs number was pretty entertaining.

So, Mia's had bad face work done AND gained weight.  I wonder if that's why we don't see her so often? There was an awful lot of kissing choreographed into that piece considering she affected not to know that Lex and Taylor were dating.  I mean, I know she can modify the choreo after "finding that out" but what would be a suitably emotive substitute for those moves?

Al Blackstone is the best "Broadway" choreographer on the show, at least considering the purpose of this show. I wish Lex/Gaby had danced his choreo instead of Warren Carlyle's in Week 3.

Lex and Koine were great in all their routines. I want them to be Top 2. But Taylor's going to make her way in there.

Who gives a damn about their (Lex and Taylor's) relationship?  The dance was a hot mess, it did nothing to highlight their individual strengths.  This was probably Mia's worst and she had some stinkers.  This dance was designed to get them top two because falling in love with a hot contemporary guy is every 13 year old contemporary dancer's wet dream.  It was juvenile.  But they vote.

I hated the hip hop, christ even Luther allows the ballroom boy to put ballroom into hip hop.  I so wanted a Koine hip hop, this girl can dance it but was never given the chance.

Best of the night was Koine and Lex in the Broadway, unforced chemistry is the best chemistry,  and Koine in the Travis Wall piece. The girl can dig to find the right emotion, and it was a considered, difficult piece.   And she totally owned Taylor on the Jazz.   The faint praise poor Koine got was just ugly.  African Jazz just as stunning this time around, and the little hiccup the first time she blew the doors off of it.   Murphy was spitting nails trying to find something good to say about Koine.  It made me so sad for her.

Total and utter BS. And Jenna was a gd idiot with the fake cry, but she learned that from Val Chmerkovskiy.  His fake cries at "the last dance with his contestant partner" are legendary.  All this manipulation ugh.  I am just voting for Koine, the one the show seems to want to throw under the bus.

It wasn't her best, but it was still a better Contemporary than anything Travis Wall has put up this season. The movement seemed very light -- Mia's strength is that she always makes her movement transform with the song that's playing. An absolutely different kind of musicality to, say, Sonya Tayeh's "there's a beat there, so kick" and Travis' "there's a guitar strum there, so contract".

It is sad. I really want her to make Top 2, and I won't even be mad if she won. But she's going to be employed right off the tour, I'd say. (She's already toured with Maluma.)

I disagree, I thought the Mia piece was garbage.  At least the Wall piece had some real emotion.

Lex and Koine are my top two at this point. I liked the Hip Hop, but swap Kiki for Koine, and it would have been fire. Lex and Koine's duet was so adorable. They have a lot of chemistry. Taylor and Kiki remain a non-factor for me. They haven't put up the Mia duet yet, but most of the other videos are up. Hmmmm...

I quite enjoyed tonight, with a few exceptions.

Koine and Lex's Broadway was adorable.

For being all about their romance, Lex and Taylor's dance was joyless (or maybe it was just so dark I couldn't really see it?), and why were they costumed like extras in Les Mis?

I hated Mandy's "girl power" routine, or maybe it was just the costumes that I hated.  On that note, I hated Taylor's costume for her cha cha with Kiki, too, and I could have happily lived my life without ever hearing that horrendous "Girlfriend" song again.

For all some may question Kiki being in the top 4 (I'm not one of them), I don't think he embarrassed himself tonight.  I feel like he grew quite a bit throughout the competition, and his solo tonight was my favorite.

Koine for the win!

Because everyone needs to rewatch it now:

It's everything that disco would have been had Mandy Moore choreographed it.

It's everything the show would have been had Koine/Lex danced everything. Can we go back to the Top 20 format? Lex could have learned how to perform more from Koine, and they both could have been great at all three genres (because Koine seems like a very giving partner, and probably would have made him look a lot better at it).

Best routine of the season? Probably, and definitely for me.

Solos: Back to 30s? Really?

Lex: This beats the one with the triple tour, for me. I've loved every solo he's done, but this one blended his hip-hop/contemporary genres seamlessly. As usual, excellent musicality.

Koine: She has pretty generic solos. She sells them through her performance quality. She has good technique, but I am not a fan of how she holds her neck, or moves her arms.

Taylor: I can't believe that we've gone through an entire season with her performing the same moves in her solos. At least she interprets the music in an appropriate way in each of her solos. I just wanted range of technique and movement. I won't take away from her musicality, or the technique she does exhibit, though (balance checks not withstanding).

Kiki: A pirate themed Paso Doble with All-Star Alex Wong. I like Kiki and his solos. He has loads of personality, and isn't afraid of using it.

Solos first, because of the Top 4 group routine. Not my favourite, but I did agree with the characters they were playing. Koine has movement that is grounded (as shown in her African Jazz). Lex flows like water. Kiki has flair. Taylor is very airy.

Taylor/Kiki Cha Cha: Taylor is... alright. Again. She is OK in every genre that doesn't directly derive from Classical technique. She did bring the performance, though. Kiki was good at it, but why did I think he faded, again? This is his genre! I did like the choreography more than his first Cha Cha, though.

Lex/Koine Broadway: Koine turns off the TV, walks to the door while scratching herself and opens the door. A bored Lex-the-delivery-guy becomes not-so-bored once he sees her, finds his jaw on the floor, and sees the door slam in his face. Perfect.

Lex/Kiki Hip-Hop: Kiki kept up! I liked it, except for when Kiki did the cha cha, again. I think they both had attitude. Of course, Lex was going to sit into the rhythm better, but Kiki was good, too.

Koine/Taylor Jazz: Ah! So Taylor can dance this type of jazz! I didn't think so after last week's routine with Logan. That puts her several rungs above Melanie Moore. I actually think there were a few spots where Taylor was getting the movement of the piece down better than Koine. I think it is yet again because Koine holds her upper body in perhaps not the best way. Of course, Taylor is cleaner than Koine with her technique, but I think they performed it really well. Not the best showcase.

Koine/Kiki Contemporary: I get why Kiki is popular. He has a lot of personality. The beginning of the routine with him smiling at Koine was really nice. But yet again he wasn't really made to do much. And I still don't care for Travis' choreography.

Lex/Taylor Contemporary: Not the best. Not the worst. I liked the airiness that the routine had, and which I think is a strength of both these dancers. I have thought of Lex as the dancer who has air under his feet, and that seemed as true as ever here.

I'm sorry, or I'm not really, but Jenna has to be the most annoying all-star to ever all-star. That isn't a comment on her dance ability, but her general personality and demeanor. I don't know if those were fake tears she worked up to gather Kiki some votes, fake tears to gain some more attention for herself because she needs attention on her at all times, or if she's just that much of a blubbering mess. It could be the latter as I've seen her dissolve into tears on DWTS over her boyfriend's partner getting eliminated from the show, such to the point that you would think they were being sent in front of a firing squad on leaving the building.

Things that bugged me tonight:

Vanessa's fingernails! They bothered me last week also...but her hair(wig) was great tonight.

Gabby's black shoes in the tap number...they should have been white or silver! But I still loved the dance.

Jenna's fake cry! (But she still has a place in my heart for her Halloween dance with James last year on DWTS. I still go to YouTube to watch it once in a while.)

What didn't bug me:

Lex and Koine's Broadway number. I had a smile on my face the whole number. What fun!!! That and the tap number were my faves of  the year.

Koine and Mark's "bug dance". I know it probably won't happen but I would love Lex to win and Koine to come in second.

I really was taken out of the tap number by Gaby's outfit. The dress ....horrible.

The Kiki and Taylor number....looked light on content and heavy on hairography to me, but I don't know dance, so I could be wrong. The height thing bugged but it's not their fault

i didn't notice Cyrus in the all star routine?  Usually he is easy to pick out since he seems so tall.

i really enjoyed the Broadway.  Usually I don't love the genre but this was adorable. Koine brings out a lightness to Lex's performance I think

I thought all four dancers performed well this week.  That said, I thought Koine was the standout.  She does everything asked of her at a very high level -- and then she brings her enthusiasm and emotion to the piece and takes it to a completely different level.  I know it's not happening, but I absolutely feel she deserves to be crowned the winner.

We do know from judges' comments last night that it's Lex and Kiki for first and second -- although it's going to be interesting who winds up on top.  I'd be infuriated on Koine's behalf if I didn't know that her dance card is going to be full from anyone in the industry who's tuned in and seen her dance.

The manipulation with Mia's piece and Lex and Taylor really left a sour taste.  I knew she was absolutely baited for return by the opportunity to choreograph Lex.  She, along with a good deal of the choreographers this season absolutely knows both Lex and Taylor from the convention circuit.  They've each been crowned best senior male or female dancer at nationals.  Pretending otherwise was an insult to the audience.

Could not understand why we weren't seeing anything from Mia so far into the show when I know Cat distinctly said two pieces from Mia.  Hopefully she blows us away with show opening number next week so the show can go out on somewhat of a bang.  Especially Mary Murphy's comments last night led me to believe that at long last the hot tamale train and all the rest is pulling into the station for one last time.  No doubt the backstage murmuring helped Jenna bring on the waterworks with authenticity, even if the reason given was not.

I like Koine, but I have to say, the side-by-side jazz dance Mandy Moore gave them didn't do Koine any favors.  Taylor's lines, musicality, and persona (in that particular dance) were (literally) head and shoulders above Koine.  On the other hand, I thought Koine and Lex's Broadway number was terrific, and she was wonderful in it!

I have to disagree, when I think of this type of jazz I think of sharp angular movement, and I thought Koine had it.  Taylor for me, on this and the cha cha seemed behind the music. In fact the cha cha looked like a pro and a timid contestant on dwts.

Mary really pissed me off,  Taylor's forward locks were not on point, her legs were spongy not sharp, overall it wasn't a great cha cha at all.

The reality is a choreographer would never actually cast Koine and Taylor in a duet because of their height difference, period, because the shorter dancer is always going to struggle to match the impression of the long lines the taller dancer should be able to project.  Put Comfort in Taylor's spot next to Koine and the roof would have come off the theater because the audience would have been able to appreciate much more of the choreography.  Put Jasmine in Koine's spot to dance with Taylor & I suspect the result would not have been as well received, because I suspect it would have revealed Taylor's shortcomings when compared to an equally long-limbed dancer with great technique -- but who also gave breath to the emotional side.

Jenna is still a manipulative sob for feining that cry when people thought she might have been injured.  And then the bs of not dancing with Kiki again, is she nuts? Of course she'll probably dance with him numerous times in her career.  It makes sense about SYTYCD may be the last time, which is a shame. I'll miss the dancing, but I'm really tired of producer manipulations.

Thank you for acknowledging the incredible talents of Marko!  Once again I sat there getting more and more angry by the fact that they let such incredible efforts by such an obviously nice guy go unrecognized with remarks again.  This is the first season for Marko to get any recognition from the judges, which is absolutely criminal.  In his own season he had to stand there while they gushed over Melanie -- completely overlooking the fact he was an integral and equal part of the spectacular results they were gushing over.  Last season he wasn't their first pick -- although the mini me casting made it clear they had suspicions Joshua might not be available.

The man comes in and smashes every style they ask of him, every single time.  Definitely in my top ten of contestants and all stars.

Posting for  the first time this season, but another thing that made it obvious was the costume choices for the Taylor/Koine jazz dance.  It was bad enough that there was so much side by side identical choreography given the height difference, but they made sure that Taylor continued to draw the eye by giving her a costume that showed more skin and Koine the dark, mostly black costume. With her being shorter and in a dark costume, she kind of faded into the background.  Personally, I thought Koine was slightly better in that routine, but I had a hard time following her.

Given who is left, I want Koine to win with Lex coming in 2nd.  Had Logan still been around (and should be over Kiki, imo), I'd have happy with him or Koine winning.

I agree with you.  Koine was at a disadvantage because she is shorter than Taylor.  Two or three weeks ago, I said that Koine had nice extensions like Taylor.  It just might not be as noticeable because she's shorter and her legs are not as long.  If I just look at them separately, Koine danced the jazz piece better.  Koine is my favorite.  She just knows what kind of emotion to bring into a piece.  She's also a great partner.  The broadway piece was so fun and she had such great chemistry with Lex.  In her contemporary piece with Kiki, they showed her face at the beginning and she looked so sad.

I was actually surprised that Taylor was not more flexible when Kiki was extending her leg towards her.  My daughter and the other female dancers in her ballroom group can extend their legs so that their feet are past their heads.  Taylor did o.k. in the cha cha just like she was o.k. in the samba.  She's better than when Lex did the samba.  But Mary still needed to point out what was wrong with both dances.  Kiki looked great but he should since that's his genre.

Kiki improved tremendously with hip-hop.  It was dumbed down so that Lex didn't look a lot better.  I didn't like that ballroom was inserted into it.  But from where he came from, Kiki did great.

The Mia piece was all kinds of manipulation.  There were some nice sections when they actually did technique.  But way too much kissing in the piece.  Are we supposed to believe that TPTB didn't know that Taylor and Lex were dating?  Right.   With the teenage girls, this probably sealed the deal that they would be 1st and 2nd.  I already thought that Koine would come in 3rd or 4th but this sealed it.  The good thing is just like Logan, I think she'll do fine afterwards and now she has TV exposure.

I also agree with you that Marko is wonderful.  I wanted him to win over Melanie.  I'm glad he's finally getting some appreciation.  He can do anything.  My daughter said that if she tried out, she would pick him as an All Star.  Unfortunately, this might be the last season.  Even with the manipulation, I still love this show and I've been watching it since the first season.

I felt several times Mary's comments either trailed off or shifted gears awkwardly -- each time seeming to stop short at saying for our/one last time or for the last show, etc.  I could be wrong, but I've been watching since season one, episode two and I felt a cloud in the air like never before last night.  The fact that this season has brought us Wade, Sonya for academy, Mia, Philip Chbeeb, Dmitry, Mark K., Tyce, Anya(complete with HTT OG explanation), and NappyTabs for that raucous closer last night involving judges and audience -- I think it's in the wind and most of the core insiders know it.   Honestly my heart sunk when I saw the judges and audience were kitted out with glow sticks during the opening number.  Not because it wasn't fun and unexpected, it was, but because I felt it was a celebration of all these years of artistry and joy from the show.

Maybe I just expected too much, but I have to say on first viewing Mia's piece underwhelmed.  I know I am not wrong in being underwhelmed by the costuming.  I'm going to let the number rest a few days and then go back and look at it without the context of the rest of the show and see if I can find the artistry and effect she was looking to deliver, or if I will find it got lost en route because the dancers knew all the steps and had the technique, but were simply unable to bring the feelz.

Have we had Jean Marc or Brian Friedman this season?  Those are two I feel would be deserving as well of a final bow.  I also suspect they would like to allow Twitch a tip of the hat in some way as well, but I'm not sure how that would have been worked in beyond sitting in the audience with Allison the first week of comp when she was injured.

Brian Friedman did that French contemporary Jazz piece for the All Stars in Black and White with Red, and Jean Marc choreographed Taylor and Robert Samba.  No doubt they will be in the audience next week if their schedules allow.

I hope she knows that, because the show doesn't let her know, and it feels like the show has done enough to manipulate the fan vote for her to be 4th.  The African Jazz wasn't her favorite, in an interview last week both her and Marco said it was the door dance that was their favorite, but editing any questions as to why African Jazz was picked was because it was the one the judges wanted.  I can't even anymore. If this is what they do to these kids who just dance their hearts out every week, when it's never a level playing field, then maybe the show has run its course.
