UGH. I don't know how much more of these field pieces that Kosta goes on I can take. I've had my fill of these ignorant fools. It's just scary.

And this may be unpopular, but I could listen to Clinton talk all day and night. I need to watch the extended interview,

Based on the clips Trevor showed of the press conference, I don't think Putin has anything on Trump simply because there's no way Trump is that good of an actor. The simplest answer and most likely answer to me is that Trump got played because he's just dumb and really doesn't know anything about anything.

Another one: IN ENGLAND TRUMP MEANS FART #PRESIDENTFART

I can't decide if Putin has something on Trump. He might -- I do believe that Trump's night in the hotel at Moscow years ago was recorded, as is the Russian custom -- but there are other explanations. First off, Trump isn't a deep person. He is steered by money/power and his ego. He loves having his ego stroked and will reward those who do so. His reward to Putin (for obviously stroking his ego) is to praise him and avoid criticizing him. He also can't stand to have his election victory sullied by any hint that he didn't earn it, so he won't accept as true that Russia intervened at all, even if there was no collusion.

The thing is, Trump is all about what's best for Trump, not for the United States.

I've been reading such good things about Sorry To Bother You. I don't know if I'll make it out to the theater or have to wait for a streaming option, but I'm eager to see it.

Seriously, it's sad/funny that Trevor and Sam's shows are back right as shit goes sideways so hard. Is John Oliver coming back on Sunday night?

I wish TDS hadn't made the World Cup "hey, Africa won the cup" joke. Coming from Noah, it doesn't bother me, it works with his brand of humor... but it's also the exact same words & rhetoric far-right/alt-right morons have been using in Europe (& in the italian press) these past few days to justify mocking the competition, its players, and the overall immigration situation. Oh, well.

I actually like it better when he focuses just on technology. He was funny in this segment, but rich people doing stupid things with their money isn't anything new.

Ronny Chieng's 'Everything Is Stupid' segment is really just Lewis Black's 'Back in Black'-lite. Luckily I have room for both of them in my heart.

When Trevor was starting his introduction, I thought Back In Black was coming up.

There wasn't much to the segment, but I did get a chuckle out of "chicken and chill." I also loved this bit: "Hey! You just bought that new thing? Boom! It's obsolete. You like chickens? Well fuck you! It's bees now." Leeches being the next next thing isn't so farfetched.

I didn't know he was on Dancing with the Stars. That was so cool to see!

I loved that they devoted so much time to Mandela. The short history lessons was very interesting and inspiring. Plus there were Trevor's little jokes, like the "prepared to die" bit. Good impression of Mandela, too.

I LOVED that moment of zen with Mandela and Ted Koppel.  The awkward silence and then, "I don't know if I paralyzed you." HA!

I don't quite understand how a UBI would work here. BTW, I noticed that the author, Lowrey, had quite a flush as the interview went on. I suppose she was nervous.

Refreshing episode. I miss Obama. Could he come back in some capacity beyond politics and opposing the current regime? Also, not only was Trevor on fire last night, I did not know he danced. Runner-up on DWTS in South Africa? Impressive.

Trevor has a great bit with Mandela instructing Obama on how to talk.

It looked like a rash to me. I don't think UBI would be that difficult, but you'd need new bureaucracy and most definitely would have to either have new taxes like a VAT, as she said, raise taxes on the 1%, or actually make corporations have to pay something in taxes. There's just no political will there, and politicians don't care tbh, even though, as she pointed out, you could actually eliminate some social programs.

I like Trevor's trash-talking African accent the best - Obama, you're white side is showing.

Trevor throwing down about DWTS was great because I'm sure no one here knew about that at all. I've seen a lot of his stand up and I don't think he mentioned it.

Amazing show last night. And not just because we were stunned to discover Trevor was once a contestant on South Africa's DWTS. Trevor did a great job in presenting the story of Nelson Mandela's life, from his childhood, his membership in the ANC, his imprisonment and release, and his becoming president of South Africa and a symbol of peace. I'd imagine Trevor was so looking forward to tell Mandela's story, especially after all the non stop bullshit coming from Drumpf.

What I'd hope Trevor would have brought up was a microcosm of what Mandela was all about in the form of South Africa's national rugby team. Throughout most of the 20th century, the Springboks as they were nicknamed were the pride of South Africa's ruling white minority, and the bane of the black populace. Mandela used to actively root against them while in prison. But in the 80's, the Springboks were being boycotted from participating in international matches due to their country's apartheid rule, which was one of the driving forces behind South Africa's decision to end it.

After Mandela was released and became president, an opportunity arose to end the Springbok's brand and create a new identity for post apartheid South Africa. Mandela refused to do this, saying that the Springbok's should be allowed to carry on as they are, not as a symbol of its past, but as a unifying one for all its citizens. And to make that point so clear, before the 1995 World Cup Final between the host nation South Africa and their opponents the All Blacks from New Zealand, Mandela came out to the field in Johannesburg wearing the Springbok's green jersey that he once rooted against. It was an emotional moment for the home crowd and was seen by many as the glue that helped bind the country as a whole for good.

Also, Trevor only briefly mentioned the truth and reconciliation commission formed shortly after that. I just have vague memories, but I remember the hearings making the news here.

Interesting response from Trevor on the pushback for his jokes about "Africa's World Cup victory."  I really like his elaboration on where the intent behind his jokes came from, but I also appreciate that he acknowledges having since read more on the issue and understanding the context of why people were upset about it.

Yeah, context & intent are everything, but so is timing. And Noah's joke came just as far right people & some foreign newspapers were using the exact same words to describe the team and its "monkey" players, so... bad timing, really.

I looooved that he talked about Mandela.

Am also loving that he's getting guests with interesting things to promote.

I am a big fan of chickens, and fresh eggs are nothing like what you get in the store, so I disagree with Ronny about chicken mania. I think he misses more often than Lewis Black, but that's OK.

I want to see all of Trevor's DWTS dances! Must go looking on YouTube....

I love how thoughtful he is. That response to the criticism of his joke was very fair. he acknowledges why people objected, and he talks about his own point of view, and he makes his case. But it's very reasonable and doesn't come off defensive.

I actually had misgivings about the joke when he first told it, even though I had not heard that the right wingers were using the same idea. I wasn't outraged, I just had mixed feelings. We don't talk about athletes in the USA as being "African" when they're members of USA teams. So I was thinking about it from the perspective of: why is it that way when they're French? But at the same time, I also got what he was saying, so it wasn't a big deal for me, just kind of a head scratcher.

And I thought his discussion of it in that between scenes video covered the issues it raised in a way that shows he's not just being a dick, he's making conscious choices when he does something controversial, and he's willing to explain himself and listen to what people have to say about it in a respectful way. I prefer that to people who just get off on stirring up controversy for the hell of it. I also love that his perspective is comfortable being what it is, and he's not trying to blend into the late night whitescape.

There's no doubt about the quality of the eggs. I have a colleague that raises chickens for the eggs. Bees too. They have about an acre of land. The honey is unreal. To be fair to Ronny, the people to whom he was referring in the piece weren't doing that. Chickens just don't lay eggs. And if there is a rooster in the bunch, then it knocks everything out of whack.

They were showing the chickens walking into the house, and the people were sitting around after work watching the chickens just walk around. Ronnie's point was that this was just something these people were doing. There's no purpose to it, and then they'd move on to something else.

Word to all of this. Watching Trevor's explanation made me fall deeper in love with him. I adore smart, compassionate people who can make me laugh.

I quite enjoy seeing Ronnie team up with Roy in the sports talk segment. Ronnie provides an unexpected but nicely, cynical counterbalance to Roy's enthusiasm over sports. Wish I could see him replace Michael Kostas in that one (actually, I wouldn't mind seeing Kostas replaced in a lot of TDS things).

Good story about the absurdity and need to give vasectomies to wild deer on Staten Island . . . and they ended it by bringing out muscle-bound Guidos. To say that was disappointing is an understatement. I’ve seen a few deer while driving, and those guys might go past the wild turkeys in notoriety . . . but hey, let’s hear from meatheads straight from Central Casting talking about shooting and/or choking out the deer! ?

Agreed. Maybe having Desi carrying around a pair of hedge clippers to deal with these Staten Island meatheads was funny, but it didn't help recover the end of what was an interesting segment they had just ruined.

Clever joke by Trevor about how farmers now feel like porn stars after they've been promised billions by Drumpf because of an unnecessary trade war he created. Yet I feel the majority of those farmers will still support his sorry ass after all this.

I thought the guidos were funny. Desi played the entire piece as absurd, so it was a fitting end. They were all basically in on the joke.

I wish I shared that. Staten Island has the most rural area among the five boroughs, so wildlife would be a concern. And deer have been popping up. Like I’ve said, I’ve seen a few in the last year, while my mother caught a buck in a place where you wouldn’t expect it.

Seriously, they had to go Guido. I’m not a native, but I’ve lived here half my life. It’s not all meatheads and mob wives. I’m grateful @Victor the Crab doesn’t seem to buy the stereotype, because I bet there are a few about Toronto folk that he(?) hates. Same goes for anyone, really.

I'm not sure why people think Trevor's the one who needed to back down.  France, in large part because of immigration, won the World Cup with black players.  That somehow is supposed to make France look bad? That's a mockable offense?  Are Americans supposed to feel bad about all of the track & field Olympic medals we've won because the sport is dominated by people of African descent?  "Africa" and "african" are not insults.  There's no reason to be offended by the suggestion that your people come from that particular continent.  The human race originated in Africa.

Is there a better time to tell a joke about the winners of the World Cup than right after they've won?  Trevor never used the word "monkey".  Again, why is everyone standing up to Trevor and not the racists?

What you seem to be missing is the fact that France is not feeling insulted because some of our players have african roots. We're not "offended" by the suggestion that our people come from that particular continent. We don't think Africa or Africans are insults.

Other people do, though. The same exact people who are currently plaguing Europe in the same way the alt-right has been plaguing the US, people who reduce black people to their athletic endeavours (the classic "those Africans, they're good at sports, but aside from that, they're worthless"), the same people who make monkey noises in stadiums whenever a black soccer player gets the ball, who oppose african immigration, who are slowly inching their way to power in many european countries, and the same exact people who openly dismissed the World Cup result because... well, too many black players.

The same people who have felt legitimized when bitter mainstream newspapers had the headlines "Africa has won the WC", when other foreign players have complained about the amount of african players on the french team, and yes, when Trevor made the same joke (albeit in very different conditions). Because according to those loud, racist people, when an african political analyst/comedian says that the french team isn't french, but african, that proves what they've been saying for years, and it emboldens them even more.

Contrary to what a lot of american op-eds seemed to think when they've analyzed this situation through the prism of US society & politics, that's what bothered a lot of french people, that's what they reacted to ; we didn't try to "take away the players africanness", to hide it, nor were we ashamed of it. As a society, we've been fighting for years against the rise of the far-right, and that "the french team didn't win, the african did" just struck a nasty chord, playing right into nationalists & racists' hands, and into a controversy that was already going on.

(also, let's be honest, french media are just as clickbaity as the rest of the world's, and most of them just jumped on the bandwagon, parroting Trevor's joke without explaining the context or the fact that Trevor is south african. Internet outrage snowballed from there.)

I really didn't have that bad of an experience in junior high or high school. I kind of feel bad that so many people did.

The problem with the bit Trevor did about how Trump fixed everything that he ruined in the first place is that his supporters just don't grasp that larger context.

I like Cortez, and I'm rooting for her. I feel like she's in a no-win situation in a way. People complain about both parties 'being just as bad' (which I don't believe) or how they don't bother voting because 'it's the same people all the time'; so here we have someone brand new and young, and it's like, "oh she doesn't know what she's doing."

As a fellow African, it was depressing to see every African team get knocked out in the group stages. I had other teams I was rooting for, but my family cheered for whoever had black people and/or Muslims. Many Africans made similar jokes about how France is the last African team in the World Cup, so when Trevor made that African joke, I just viewed it as a joke from an African cheering for people who looked like him.

I think the ambassador should have used this as a means to show just how diverse France is and how they accept everyone, instead of going about it the way he did. If it was anyone else, the letter might work, but Trevor is from South Africa. He was going to cheer for anyone with Africans in the end. It's what we all did...though I was pulling for Croatia too, since they played so well.

If you're saying "obstruction of justice" can only legally be a criminal offense if done in private should be summarily 5150-ed as a danger to society.

Andrea Mitchell doesn't think it's fair to connect the president with the shooting at the newspaper? Not even a little, for creating a hostile violent environment? Come on.
