I'm liking Jack far more than I ever thought I would, which is great.  And by adding a couple of characters that I really don't like (Asmodeus and Ketch...again), they've actually made Lucifer tolerable for me.  That's something I never thought I'd ever say after last season.

Still reserving judgement on Asmodeus, the return of Ketch and Lucifer, etc, but I totally agree that the way they have written Jack thus far, as well as the actor's portrayal of him, has been a win. His youthfulness makes a nice counterpoint and throwback feeling to the early days of the show for me. Even though he is a being of immense power, it doesn't define him (even if he himself feels it must) as much as his actual personality does and I really hope they can maintain that balance. There's a freshness there with him in the mix which really appeals to me.

It's actually made Lucifer a more interesting character to me once again - which is really weird considering I thought he was pretty boring last season.  I think giving him a really worthy adversary (or two) helps.

Kinda positive, if not super positive. I only saw the 2nd half of the episode on Thanksgiving, and I was so disappointed in it that I didn't watch the entire episode until last night. So now I have to admit it made a lot more sense with a full viewing. Also that the scenes between Cas and Lucifer were not too bad. Michael is sufficiently scary to be a worthy opponent. Colonel Sanders, however, I just can't.

I agree.  Jack could have been so flat and shallow, but it seems like they've rounded him out pretty nicely.  Of course, he's still 'new' - and I don't mean just as a character, but as a being - so there should still be more development for him on the horizon, but I feel pretty confident that, based on how he's been portrayed so far, that will also be good story telling.

Asmodeus when he was first introduced didn't excite me too much.  I had a feeling that he was going to be after revenge on Lucifer, but his plot line seems more interesting now also, with him being able to tell that Lucifer isn't as powerful as he used to be (that's a new skill I don't think we've seen before!) and working with Ketch.

His skill set is interesting! I like the idea of the Princes of Hell in general, really. And finally I can give my confession: I may like, or at least I don't hate, Asmodeus...There, I said it! I should probably hate him for the fake southern accent alone. Aside from the knife torture porn (sick of that!), I find myself liking his scenes. The actor has charisma. Evil Colonel Sanders is not all cookie-cutter, he was ready to bow down to Lucifer and/or protect his son to rule in his place. But then he also ambitious enough to takeover when he senses Lucifer's weakness. I really want to see his future interactions with Jack.

I can't imagine that Jensen and Jared have agreed to longer work schedules this season, but it does seem to me that they're more "present" in the episodes this year.  Last year there were a number of times when one or the other of them felt disconnected from the plot.  This year, at least so far, I haven't felt that at all.  And as someone who watches for the brothers, primarily, that's a big improvement.

"Disconnected from the plot" is an apt description.  It wasn't so much that they weren't on screen, but even when they were everyone else was driving the story.  Someone at the site I used to visit posted a blow by blow account of certain episodes where neither Sam nor Dean made a damn bit of difference and could have slept in at the bunker.

It's much better this year and I'm sure the guys are getting the same amount of time off. Hopefully Dabb & Co pay some attention to grumbles on social media.

I have been super into the Olympics the past week, but last night my Thursday night 7:59 alarm went off and I was sad there was no new episode. I was watching this huge, once every four years event, and I was still  missing our 13 years and running show.

Sidenote: Is it weird to have an alarm set for Supernatural? Anyone else do that?

I don't, but only because I'm in the Central time zone and am usually racing to get home from work before 7pm!

My morning alarm is Jared and Jensen saying "Ring, ring. Don't you want to answer the phone? Someone answer the phone for crying out loud." I don't think I'm in any position to judge.

Haven't been popping into the individual episode threads lately - and I've been staying away from speculation - not spoilers though!  I have my limits! ;)  I just want to say that I have really been enjoying the back half of this season.  I feel like all the different story lines set up in the first half are finally getting some traction - and there have been some twists and turns I have not expected.  But it's all good!  I've even enjoyed the eps without much season story arc in them, like the Scooby episode in particular was a really nice little break.  Kind of reminded me of how the show used to do that more often back in the day.  It feels like there's been more focus on Sam and Dean, which has been really nice.

I have really enjoyed this season, but then again I say that pretty much every season! What can I say? I just love the show.

As for what I like specifically about this season: I really like Jack and how they’ve integrated him into the show. Last season I wasn’t sure about the nephilim storyline, but Jack has been a great addition.

I’d also add that I am pumped about the possibilities of Wayward Sisters, so the set up for that was something else I liked about this season.

I think Jack is the best new character in quite a while. Alex really lights up every scene he’s in. I hope they use him a lot next season.

I thought Beat the Devil was a really good episode, the tunnel scene especially, tense ? and scary. From the point when they went through the rift, the episode flew by. Not sure what to think about Sam’s dream. It was qualitatively different than his visions but they haven’t shown any plain old dreams before, so it has some meaning even if it’s not predictive of a future happy ending.  That’s too much to ask for Sam I guess.

I’ve had complaints about Lucifer but when he’s evil he’s very evil and very good. Loved the bells (at least that’s what they sounded like to me) when Sam entered the camp. Sam f’ing Winchester has arrived!

I like Jack, as well, but I'm concerned for how they keep him around, along with Castiel.  They have to do something about their powers, although they've pretty much taken most of Cas' powers away it seems.  I don't want to lose either character, so I hope they can find a way.  The problem for me is that as with most supporting characters, I enjoy them most of all when they're interacting with Sam and Dean, and I know that's not always possible.  But it is my preference, nevertheless.

They 'handled' the problem of a featuring a Free Range Lucifer and Free Range Gabriel by using the "grace siphoning" plot device to keep them from just wiping everything off the board in a single episode.  Jack was just learning his powers and they were wonky.  And Cas... IDK.. damaged from the Empty?  They haven't really said.  So... let's presume Lucifer and Gabriel are not central players next year, so it's just Jack and Cas.  Well, Jack could possibly lose some power in the upcoming battles (presuming there are battles) or in the trip back to our universe.  That helps a little.  Jack could also not regenerate like the angels do -- being only half angel to begin with.

My preference would definitely be for Sam's dream sequence at the start of the last episode to be a REAL THING.  If we had both Cas & Jack in the bunker, perhaps they could be around half the time for cases and the other half working their own thing together (like ways to fix Heaven).  With 2 vice 1, it feels less like isolating Cas.  And 4 people for every hunt is a lot.  Or maybe they could mix up who is with whom from time to time.  I just want them both (Cas and Jack) around the boys too.

Back in the early seasons we only got 22 episodes (and, ugh, only 16 for season 3), so I’m glad we get 23 these days! Looking forward to what I still think of as a bonus episode this season!

Not sure if this link will work but here's a nice super-positive article:

If you zoom in, you can read the words.  It's spoiler-free and doesn't even talk about the end of S13 as it's written for a British audience (who hasn't had all of S13).

I like this season thus far (besides the over-populated bunker).  I like Maggie, though.  I hope she gets to stick around for a few epis.  And I love that we have Bobby back.  I'm really interested in seeing what is going on with Nick and where Michael disappeared to, assuming he disappeared anywhere.  There's a lot going on and I find most of it really interesting.  I really also loved Mint Condition.  It was nice that we didn't have the extrabunker people and I love the MOTWs with just Sam and Dean the best.

Pro-show.  Only one slight negative but done with love.   Must read for those who love ‘deep cuts’ character analysis.

Did you also see the related article on the side..."300 Questions Supernatural Needs to Answer by Episode 300".  https://www.hypable.com/supernatural-300-questions-episode-300/

Besides some serious (and sticky) questions about *everyone* in the show, it also includes such gems as these on the AU hunters in the bunker:

How were their Bunker household roles established?

Is there a chore wheel?

Are any of them working with a therapist? They should be.

Is it Mia? It should be.

We 100% need to see a chore wheel. That would be hilarious.  But, I've always assumed that MOLs cast some kind of spell to keep dust out.  It's the only explanation for how dust-free that place is.  Especially when they first entered it. I want that spell.  And I will get it.

I really enjoyed this read. I didn't agree with every meta point, but I appreciate the thought that went into it.

Without discussion that belongs in another thread, I must say that while I had heard that there was a scene in which the Js decided to switch Dean and Sam's dialogue, I didn't know that this was it:

Spoiler

The episode contains a passing scene in which Sam, Dean and Charlie watch Game of Thrones together, and Charlie, about to comment on Joffrey’s future crimes, was stopped from spoiling by Sam, who says he’s still making his way through the novels. Dean then queries, with surprise, the fact that Sam is going to read the books, and Sam quips back “Yes, Dean. I like to read books – you know, the ones without pictures.”

The thing is, this was written in reverse. Dean was meant to be the spoilerphobe in the scenario, with Sam surprised that his brother is going to tackle all 49 million pages of George R. R. Martin’s epic saga.

And I agree with her 100%. It was definitely a mistake to do so and they should've been overruled.

I don’t think this is the scene they meant, tho.  Somewhere in my brain I seem to remember it was a scene where they’re arguing and they switched lines. They approached bob singer, who was directing  I don’t think this is it.

i think the article captures Dean fairly well,  his ability to find joy in a violent dangerous world is something I love and respect about the character

Maybe there was more than one? But the writer links to a tweet by Robbie Thompson that confirms they switched dialogue in this scene (which he wrote).

I have a history of spoiling my own Christmas, ever since I was little.  Not always on purpose, sometimes it just happens. This year, I very accidentally found out that my daughter has ordered a custom Jody Mills Funko Pop for me!  Squee!!! I only collect girl Pops, strong female characters.  I'm hoping this takes some of the sting out of the bitterness I feel over this season so far. :)

I'd love to just be able to come in here and talk about the show/episode every week.

So far I've been enjoying the season. I thought the last 3 episodes were particularly good.

I posted Natalie Fischer’s article on Hypable in the Music thread but it also did a wonderful job, IMO, of describing the value of Jack from a narrative perspective — with specific emphasis on what we saw in the episode “Unhuman Nature”.

I just LOVE Natalie’s take.  I think she’s spot on regarding how Jack heals all three original members of Team Free Will.  There’s been overt discussion in the media about how they way Cas views himself is changing in light of his interaction with Jack. And that’s spot on IMO.  But I didn’t appreciate the Sam and Dean angles till she pointed it out.  Obviously I knew Sam related to Jack due to the “otherness”.  But I LOVE the notion that Sam’s self-acceptance is bolstered by his easy acceptance of Jack.  It rings so true.

And then there’s Dean.  I love how she describe’s Jensen’s face during the ‘meaning of life talk’.  I know I was ALSO about to burst when Jack was talking.  And I think the way we saw Dean take in the comments definitely contributed to that.  I also can’t believe that I forgot that Dean’s recurring positive dream was about John teaching him to drive.  SPOT ON.  Dean is SUCH a natural Dad.  I’m glad he’s getting to feel that way again with Jack.

Anyway, I just LOVED the article.  I think Natalie always does a good job of squeezing all the delicious juice out of an episode.

At this point, I think SPN400 is not impossible.  Hear me out -- with 20 EPs a year, that's only 5 more years.  We've got S15 -- that takes us 327.  IF they sign in S15 (which is just next Nov-Jan), that's two more years.  J2's happiness right now seems VERY high.  And personally I think the last 4 episodes have been some of the best of the SERIES.  If '20' vs '23' makes them feel like the quality is great, then I would be surprised if they were ready to throw in the towel next Nov-Jan (negotiations time).  So, IF they keep with 20 each year, then we are up to 367 as they would likely sign for 2 more years (S16/S17).  They could easily then add a 20 and a 13 to get to EP400 in a S18/S19.  OR they could go 13, 13, 13 to get to 20 Seasons -- another BIG milestone.  Either way, 4-5 years more commitment is not unrealitic IMO.

Now personally, I'd love it if they got to S500.  But that's 10 more years.  Dean/Jensen would be 50.  I just don't know if they'd keep going with all the stunt work for that long.

I loved the finale too, the chaos outbreak as the people could‘t lie anymore was fun to watch. They the end was exciting, and I liked the Zombies, it was great considering that the show has not a big budget.

I think it has been one of the best season finales.

IMO, top 5 spn finales: I still think the most epic finale was 8 when Sam was dying, Cas was human, and the angels were falling. That was intense.

I also liked the end of 10 when Dean just got rid of the mark and the darkness was coming and Cas seemingly killed Crowley under the attack dog spell.

I thought the endings of season 5 and 6 were worthy of the top 5 too.

That leaves one left to round out my top 5. This one is certainly the most ambitious both in scale of the monsters and Chuck being the villain. So either this one or tied with season 12. Sam confronting Lucifer’s son while Dean leans over Cas’ dead body.

S9 catatonic for weeks

S2 Dead Sam, Crossroads deals, Dean and Bobby in the scrapyard

S3 Crap! They sent Dean to Hell!!!

S5 the end (we thought) of the Apocalypse, Lucifer/Michael, TFW prevails

S8 angels falling
