Australian Survivor - General Discussion

I saw an interesting video on YouTube yesterdays.  It was Russell Hantz (That's what I get when for searching for Daisy's Ponderosa video) talking about his time on Australian Survivor last season.  He claimed that the contestants had normal food and razors (There was something else but I am going off my shoddy memory as I watched the video around 3am.).

Now I am not sure if this is true or not.  Or maybe he is so bitter over the fact that he got voted out so early.  Who knows.

I just thought it was interesting.

I think different versions get different things. I don't think AU gives them many amentities based on how much weight everyone loses, and it does seem the men all grow beards. I think US and "all stars" seasons makes it easier on them.

I was fooled by the editing and didn’t see Janine getting voted out!

At least one of Baden, Harry and Luke are making it to the finale, which I wouldn’t have expected when the players first swapped tribes.

That is why I think he is bitter and just trying to throw shade.

I was fooled as well, I can't believe they got rid of the Godmother.  No word of a lie when I realized that she was in fact getting voted out I said, "Wow".  I said it a few seconds before Pia said it, I was actually shocked.  I cannot remember the last time I was shocked over an elimination on a reality show.

I think it was the right move. Now Pia will be forced to team up with Abbey and Baden to take out Luke and Harry and thus the 3 with the least impressive resumes will goat get into the final.

Baden needs to win some food, pronto!

Finally, a challenge that is not about strength... and Luke still wins it. I can't help but root for him.

Um, why did Luke not just send Pia back to camp and let the other 3 freak out over who they would send home. That would have been so entertaining. The way he did it, it could have come down to a rock drawing competition between Pia and Abbey.

Luke's crazy if he puts any trust in Pia or anyone else at this point. Maybe they will hide another advantage for him.

Pia sure knows who's wing to crawl under. Really don't want her to win!

I think Luke played it that way because then he had control over who went and he wanted Abby to go as she was a bigger physical threat.  I thought it was plenty entertaining as it was with him blindsiding both Harry and Abbey.

Still can't stand Luke but I am grudgingly respecting his gameplay, heh.  Glad Abbey went and would have been happy with Harry or Baden going as well, don't like any of them.  Also glad Pia is still there.

This is such an odd final four.  Each of them should have been gone long ago and yet they are all still here.  I honestly can say I do not care who out of the four win, I think it would be a good outcome.

I was wondering why he did not send Pia back to camp as well, because such a move could have ended up blowing up in his face.  But Nozycat seemed to hit the nail on the head as to why he decided to play it the way he did.  Heck Baden would have probably been the one who went if Pia was sent back to camp and I really do think Luke wants to go to the finals with Baden.

It was a risk though. He gambled that Abbey would switch her vote to Harry. Although it's not really a risk cuz even if she didn't it would have been a 2-2 tie between Pia and Abbey, and in the revote Harry would have HAD to switch his vote to Abbey, otherwise it would be a 1-1 tie again. And isn't it the rule that if it tied again Abbey and Pia would be safe and the others draw rocks. But Luke is already safe, so Harry would have gone by default. Which, if I got all that right, makes Luke super smart!

  • Love 1

I think it was more than a gamble though.  Luke told Abbey to vote for Harry and made her and Harry both believe that was what he was doing so that he and Pia could get Abbey.  I thought that was quite brilliant, deliberate game play.

I agree, in fact, it was not a gamble whatsoever. Cuz even if Abbey didn't switch and voted Pia, it would have still ended up the exact same result via the pathways I described in my last comment, which took me a while to suss out. Luke played it masterfully!

Who is everyone's pick to win it?

I would say Luke, but I have a strong feeling he is not touching the finals.  Therefore, my backup is Harry.  Though I could easily see Pia winning as well.  Basically anyone but Baden, I just have a feeling he is going to have a hard time trying to "prove" his game.

Luke, Harry, Pia, Baden in that order, depending on who's left.

Hard to tell from the Jury Villa who Janine is going to lobby for, but I think Luke first, then Pia, then Harry, and she will probably be able to sway a few votes.

I don't think the jury sees Baden as anything but a goat.

The emotional blackmail in this episode made me FURIOUS and glad that they voted Luke out.  I find it hard to move past the fact that he's so worried about providing for the daughter he LEFT 6 weeks after she was born to go on a reality tv show.  And I get it, it's a very sad situation for his family, but that doesn't mean he's OWED the win or that anyone owes him a vote (which to be fair, I think the SHOW was playing up waaaaaaay more than Luke actually was and likely making him talk about his family during confessionals etc, still doesn't make me enjoy or like him as a contestant).  I also hate that the reaction on twitter was to a) blame Pia, b) ask the show to allow viewer voting to give him money and c) the NINE different Go Fund Me's that were set up in his name (but again, I don't begrudge him that money as long as he actually gets it).

I've liked Pia this entire game and I've wanted her to win since the merge and I think she has a really good chance here.  I'd be disappointed if it was Harry because he's a bit of a smug douche but he's played a decent game, even if it did take him 4 tries to get out Janine!  Baden though, just doesn't have the 'resume' to back up a win.  But hey, we've seen juries do stranger things.

I don't like to use this term a lot but that music made me cringe.  It was beyond ridiculous.  Some of the Juror's reactions were over the top as well.  As TVbitch said you would think that someone had died.

I have said it before but I honestly do not care who wins.  I found this season to be very enjoyable.  Especially after the crapfest that was the last season of American Survivor.

A daughter who was in hospital for several weeks and diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, and a wife who had just been operated on with 2 autistic children.

For me, a disappointing finale after a great season. I knew Pia was going to win a long time ago, but I just don't like her and her "I secretly controlled everything from a safe distance" game.

As soon as Baden won the final challenge (and why wouldn't he, he was probably holding up all of 7 pounds!) it got super boring. I actually FF some of it. A lot of filler.

I wish AU would do a final 3 so there could be a couple worthy people at the end to fight it out and keep the final tribal interesting. A decent player crushing a goat is not exciting, and, in fact, it was a bit uncomfortable watching Baden lose his confidence and his words while Pia kept punching him down. I guess she did what she had to do, but it was not pleasant. I would much rather have seen Pia and Harry fight it out.

Wow, they announced the winner in Fiji? I guess Australian cast and crew can keep a secret more than Americans can.

When I realized Baden was going with my least favorite argument ever, "Survivor is my personal story of growth," I had a feeling Pia would take it 9-0. It was deserved, but eh. I would've been interested to see Harry vs Baden -- make the Champions choose. I do wonder if Baden pulled a "I know I can't win, but I'm going to make sure you don't win either" with Harry. I did enjoy Harry's Snidely Whiplash mustache on the jury, though.

I actually found what Pia did to Luke with his vote-out was cruel. He's absolutely not owed her vote, but I think she owed it to him as a decent human being, to be upfront about it. And who knows if she was, but I hated that she was like "oh, maybe I will save you" to Luke's face (if she says it in confessional where he can't hear it, that's one thing). She was never going to save him. And dithering about her vote just twisted the knife for Luke. I realize they had to build suspense, but in a way, what Harry did was the kindest thing: I'm voting you out and there's nothing you can do. Saying "well, maybe ..." when you have no intention of ever following through is unnecessary.

A fun season that was so strong up until the end game, for me.

@Eolivet It was actually hard to avoid spoilers this season and I hope they don't do this again. Hopefully there was some backlash for it. There are always people who like to go onto reddit or other forums and ruin it for everyone.

I guess Luke's gofundme has half a million in it now, so looks like he "won" after all. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but hopefully he will use it wisely.

Next up...

Spoiler

All Stars where several of this cast will be playing again. Rumor is David, Harry and maybe a couple others.

It is odd but for Aussie Survivor I really do not want to be spoiled.  For the American version I get annoyed when there are no spoilers.  Not sure why that is the case.

Spoiler

That being said, I would love to find the actual rumored list for the All-Star season.  Not the boot order, but who will be taking part in the next season.

Man Pia was absolutely savage when talking about Baden.  I felt for the poor guy.  Call me naïve, but I thought possibly John, Luke or Daisy would throw him a bone.  Therefore, when I found out it was a 9-0 vote I was a little shocked.

Harry's mustache looked beyond ridiculous.  What was the look he trying to go for 70's pornstar?

The whole family at the final Immunity Challenge and at the FTC was a little corny in my opinion.

Do they have a Reunion Show?  Because there was none posted on the site I watched it on.

No reunion show!  The family at IC was done last year but it was the first time (?) they let them be at FTC which I thought was MEAN to whoever lost.  Pia DESTROYED that FTC and I loved every minute of it.  I especially enjoyed her not taking any of Dave's shit about being a goat.

Harry to me looked like a villain from a silent movie, about to tie some poor lady to some train tracks.

The All Stars cast:

Spoiler

2016: Lee, Flick, Brooke, Nick, and Phoebe

2017: Jericho, Michelle, Locky, Henry, AK, Jacqui, and Mark H

2018: Shane, Sharn, Shonee, Mat, Lydia, Zach, and Moana

2019: Harry, Abbey, Daisy, John, and David

Not sure how the tribes are split up, but it appears to be two tribes of twelve again, only this time instead of defaulting to different shades of blue/teal vs red/pink like the last three years it'll be green vs yellow.

I didn't think Pia was savage at all, I thought she was assertive and clear about how she played the game and made a great case for herself.  She is being called a bully by some as well and I wonder if the same would be said if it was a man saying the same things.

That might be the case for some people.  I would not call what she did as being a bully, I will say savage in that she did destroy his game utterly and any argument he tried to mount in his favor.  But that was what she was supposed to do and I liked it.

I loved that the two people who were seemingly going to be first boots on their respective tribes ended up in the final two.  That is something you hardly ever see (I am not sure if it has ever happened).

Spoiler

Ross on the list.  I thought for sure they would bring him back.  Maybe due to his injury he is not able to do so.  I have no idea when they finished filming the season that just ended.

@TallulahBelle:  You know I completely forgot they had their family members at the final IC last year.  I am not sure if I blocked out that season or what but I really do not remember it all that well.  Which is odd because that season had my favorite winner of Survivor Australia so you would think I would recall it better.

I'm sorry but

Spoiler

John and Daisy

have zero business being on All Stars! I mean, that is almost laughable. Even

Spoiler

Abbey

has a pretty weak resume for that. I guess when you are doing All Stars after only a few seasons, you have to pad it.  I will be watching for sure!

I will say that for those who are unhappy with some of the All Stars cast list...

Spoiler

a fair number of people declined or had other commitments. I know that Benji and Sarah from Season 2 had prior work commitments, for example.

I am a bit surprised to not see Janine, however.

David??

Spoiler

David is the model on the Champions who was tightly aligned with Luke, got the most confessionals of the season, and was blindsided at final 10 with an idol still in his possession.

Oh good, because I was going to say

Spoiler

hate him or not, Benji deserved an invitation. Happy to see that he just couldn't make it. He and David could've had an epic gross-eating-at-rewards alliance. 😉

A little shocked Luke wasn't asked to basically become the Boston Rob of Survivor AU, as well. Maybe he'd have been too easy a boot, but you never know.

Bring on All Stars!

Was that the entire cast? It didn't seem like enough.

No I do not think it was.

Spoiler

I thought Jericho was in the cast but the only winner they showed was Shane.  Also, no John or Daisy.  So at the very least they were missing.

I thought the new season was supposed to be shown in the winter, not the summer.  That is a shame because I was actually looking forward to it and now I have to wait all this extra time.

You know I knew I was not a fan of Lydia but I could not remember why.  Now I remember why, I find her to be a poor sport.  When they won the first challenge I felt like she was overreacting, almost rubbing it in the other Tribes faces.  Maybe I am incorrect in thinking that way, but that is how I felt.

I love the alliance of Shonee, Nick and Harry!

What happened to Moana? Wasn't she actually decent in challenges during season 3?

Is Shonee divorced now?  I thought her whole thing was she was a homemaker and her husband was some high profile skateboarder.

I was thinking the same thing about Moana.  She was/is an athlete right or am I thinking of someone else?

I thought it was poor editing when she was a name tossed around for elimination and yet she did not give one confessional about being on the hot seat.

I so wanted Daisy to go.  I have never been a fan of hers, but I knew she was not going anywhere.

It is funny but there are so many people in this cast that I kind of sort of remember.  I remember not liking Zach but for the life of me I do not recall why.

I sort of remember Jacqui but I do not remember anything about her other than her distinctive voice.

I get Flick and Phoebe confused and often times think they are the same person.

I remember liking Sharn but for the life of me I do not remember why.

I remember thinking Brook and Michelle were very pretty and that is still the case.

Shonee's title changed halfway through season 3 to HR assistant. I think she's still married?

This past episode was insane, but I'm annoyed that we still haven't seen a confessional from Abbey or Flick.

Yeah big difference in how much airtime some are given and how little others.  And something feels off with Moana, no airtime then a big focus on how bad she did at the challenge and a weird response at tribal.

So glad Jericho is gone, never liked him.

Zach was a sexist pig, saying women should be in the kitchen, etc. Kept claiming physical prowess without ever being particularly good at anything. It's a mystery why he was invited back.

Jacqui was 50! An age when you can't be discounted! 50! 50! Did she mention she was 50!?!

Sharn was a low key, smart player who never got terribly emotional.

Yeah when they showed the what they were know for segment I remembered why I disliked Zach.

So glad Daisy got voted out, I loved seeing her talking shit to Matt about the long game.  Only to see her get voted out.  As you can tell I am no fan of Daisy.

Loving it so far! David is just genius at this game. Sia should give him some money just for entertaining us. "Gold, Jerri, Gold." and "You shall not pass." He reminds me of some guy friends who always have a tv/movie quote ready for any situation.

He and Matt could ride their secret alliance all the way to the end, if they keep it going after the merge.

Kind of dumb for them to completely exhaust Locke's strength trying to win a cup of coffee when the immunity challenge was coming up.

Is it dropping to two episodes a week now?
