With rain pummeling the island, teams scramble to avoid freezing flood waters, while a group attempts a massive construction project that could be a key to survival and another chooses between betraying family or tapping out.

Waah! Waah! I missed my daughter's birthday! Loser! You've been away two bleeping weeks! I remember times in my childhood when my father had to be away for longer than that because of his job. He wasn't putting "money before family." He was supporting his family. What a loser, guilting his brother into tapping out.

I felt sorry for the little bird. They had all that fish...

All that blather is really just a way to rationalize quitting. He wasn't quitting because he missed his family, he was quitting because it was hard. People seem unwilling to say "I'm beaten", so they talk about the end of the journey, family over money, etc. Big brother really guilted little brother.

I was watching it with my 15 year old and we talked about how Dave in season two stuck it out for his family. His kids needed some financial security. Nobody thinks he chose money over family.

The Bairds may be turning the tide. A few good meals could make a huge difference.

It does seem, as pointed out above, that the weaker person is really killing the team. I will say that the dad is really positive and supportive. He catches fish too.

I can't see the show yet but it better be Brody tapping out and not Chris...

Brody busted his hump by doing the hiking so if it is Chris who wanted to tap then that will be a problem at the Thanksgiving table....

Brody stated that Chris was already checked out when he got to camp.  I thought it was Chris (the older brother) that really pushed for this so he could spend time w/his much younger brother.

Another reason I hate the Bairds?  They didn't respect the bird they killed by apologizing or thanking it, like we saw with the duck or previous contestants do (esp Nicole, Jose & Alan).

I am soooo loving Sam & Pete's relationship.

Who gets a hook embedded in them next week?  I thought it was a Baird, hubby thought it was Pete.

I would be PISSED OFF if my brother did that.

I think the non-quitter brother (I can't be bothered to learn names this season) was extremely unhappy but holding it in. I'm afraid it will come rushing out at the next family gathering that includes alcohol.

This moron, one assumes, knew when his daughter's birthday was so why did he go out there at all? Also non-quitter brother did the hike. He suffered thru that and for what? His quitter brother was "already checked out" when he got to camp.

This season is a bust. Whoever had this idea needs to be fired. It used to be "must see TV". Not anymore. Even Brook and Dave are kind of boring now.

I'm rooting for the wolf to win.

Well, it's a pretty safe bet the wolf will still be there after the rest of these guys leave.

Maybe I come from a different era (or just a more dysfunctional family) but my father wouldn't have given a flying fig if he had to miss one of my birthdays.  And if he was somewhere trying to win $1/2M? My mother and I would both be saying "Stay out there.  We don't miss you and  we want the money!"

Same here. Once when I was young, my father had to miss my birthday for some kind of work trip. It was no big deal really and I'm sure he didn't lose any sleep over it BUT as a gift he brought me a book that I loved and still have. It was very special.

Also didn't quitter brother already miss the kid's birthday? So what does he accomplish with quitting? He gets to go home empty-handed and still sorry?

This season is going to be so short I'm not sure we'll even get to see the cabin built. Which is the only interesting thing about this season. Disappointing, just a terrible idea to pick this group of people and change the show.

I gave History a piece of my mind after watching this mess. They've ruined this show. I told them if they ever do this again a huge group of people I know will boycott. LOL!

When they first showed the brothers from MS/LA, I knew they'd be goners since all they could do is talk about their families. Especially the guy with the baby, but he was the one who didn't want to quit....I think? Just say it's too damn hard to do, don't use your family as an excuse. They won't like that. And they won't like you coming home empty-handed.

I wonder what the psychological fallout is for the ones who quit like this? I'd love for them to do followups.

That duck was just trying to get warm and say "Hey guys, whatcha doing?" That's why I could never do this, I'd try to make pets out of things I should be eating.

Brooke's not going to have time to build the hot rock spa at the rate people are tapping out.

Another shitty episode. What the fuck?

So Chris's family didn't want him to go, actively telling him they didn't support his going, but he went any way. His brother busts his butt finding his way to Chris and then Chris taps out. Weak sauce. Totally wimpy.

There is nothing positive to say about this season.

So big brother actually came out here over the objections of his family and then has the nerve to use them as an excuse to leave, because he is not man enough to simply admit he can not endure the hardship?

This happened after poor little brother hiked over what he considered mountains and consumed non sushi grade raw fish.

I am several years older then my sibling.  When you are that much older, you are almost a psuedo parent.  My sibling will tell you I helped raise him.

This probably why the younger guy did not put up much of a fight, even though he had just hiked through hell and had much younger children.

Also please do not try to pretend you are doing something noble.  Big brother sefishly came on to the show and now you are selfishly leaving it.

This show used to be on my Top-to-Watch list.  But last night was really disappointing. The show wasted at least 4 or 5 episodes on blurry bushwhacking, didn't show enough of what the non-bushwhackers were doing, had way too many early tap-outs and now the Baird Bros are gone for no apparent reason. (I also don't buy the missing the birthday excuse).

Those guys were whingeing about being miserable in their tent, but made no effort that I could see to do anything to improve their comfort.  But then they showed them sitting in the sunshine on what looked to be a mostly FLAT, TREELESS, piece of ground! Instead of crashing through the underbrush looking for a new campsite, they seemed to have a perfect one right where they were sitting.  I don't get it.

Sam & Pete and the dopey brothers haven't done anything about moving their camp either.  At least to get out of the path of floods.

They probably focused on the bushwhackers because most of the campers did nothing. Brooke was the only one to accomplish much of anything.

And Brooke's shelter is the only one that did not flood, so she clearly found a good location, built a killer shelter and a fire place.

I hear that they have an excellent menu of duck and seafood.  I don't know how much longer it will be open though, since I have a feeling the owners might come into a little money soon...

We have three teams...two of which are pretty endearing and one that is fairly annoying.  With my luck with predictions, the big butt bros will win it all.

ANOTHER camper taps out.  That's four for four.  The theory that the weaker contestant was given the camper position has to be true.   And more whining about missing family.  I was hoping we would avoid that with the teams this season, but noooo.  Such a miserable excuse, that guy knew when his daughter's birthday was, and he already missed it anyway.

The three teams left look like they're all doing well though.  With the father/son team, it looks like the son is the better woodsman, but the dad appears to be better at catching fish.

The Bairds definitely thanked the duck, the fish, and God.  That was a weird scene with the duck just running up to their camp like that.  I thought it was funny the one guy said "People are going to say a producer just chucked that duck at us".  Must have read some of these forums lol.

I was wanting to see how Brooke's shelter held up during the rainstorm, but they didn't show the Whipples until the next day.  I guess it must have been okay.

I REALLY hope that the producers didn't come up with this idea because they think that the only way a woman can win is with the help of a guy. (hrumph)  I love Brooke and Dave, but if that is part of the thinking, then that would suck and totally takes away from her skills and abilities. She did more than everyone else at the base camp in the time before Dave got there. Unless something catastrophic happens, I cannot see Brooke and Dave not winning.

That was the part I didn't understand. The shelter was poorly made in the first place. Then they did nothing to correct that before, during or after the rain. And it rains 240 days on the average. Why are they there, then?

This show has gone from sublime to ridiculous in record time. First of all, it has gotten quite boring. Second of all, the whining about missing one's family after less than TWO friggin' weeks? Are you kidding me? When I think about all the soldiers stationed overseas who are not only missing their kids' birthdays but worrying about getting injured or killed, it makes the Southern Brothers look like whining babies (even though younger bro appeared pissed that older bro is a wuss). Third, did I mention how boring this has become?

Weeks ago, I suggested that they should have allowed the person who didn't necessarily want to tap out (the uninjured partners, the father of the kid afraid of the big bad wolf) to stay as a single and compete. Would have made the season much more interesting.

Hindsight being what it is, I bet the producers had wished they'd done this as well. And give them a bonus if they win. With nothing going to the departed partner. That'll show 'em!!

I'd love to know what Alan Kay thinks about this bunch.

I am getting married in 2 weeks, my sister is my maid of honor. She works at a casino, and getting days off is like cutting off a limb. She's going to use an emergency day off, call in that morning, so she can be there. But if she were on this show, and couldn't make it.... I would cheer her on!! Quite the show this week... clearly some have reached "that point" with the show.  I'm leaning to that side as well...enjoying this one about 75% as much as the last 3 seasons but it's still better than most of what's on otherwise.

The Cajun boys sure didn't represent the South very well...at least one of them.  My wife and I were sharing those "Seriously?" looks as the older brother was talking about missing his family and "justifying" tapping out with the BS idea that they'd see him as choosing them over money by going home.

2 freakin' weeks!  You knew you were going to miss birthdays and such....that you'd be out there at least 2 months.  Chris absolutely guilted Brody into quitting.  Dude had just gotten there after killing himself on that hike and, as he said...Chris had already checked out when he got there.

My hope is that Brody was thinking about the long game...that he had to live with his brother the rest of his life and since he'd already quit in his head, forcing him to stay there was only going to get worse before it ever got better.  Family before funds I guess....

I cracked up when the Baird bros were talking about being "survival experts"....after someone posted last week how funny that disclaimer seemed to be, especially as it related to them (cutting your own hand will do that).  I expected them to tap out next but now that they've found food....who knows?  I can't even begin to fault them for killing the duck that wandered into camp, it's survival of the fittest and they needed food. Dude didn't hesitate though...3 seconds after seeing it and he LAUNCHED himself at it!

Pete and Sam lucked out with the high tide.  Pete said something about how he couldn't believe that would ever happen.... after being there only 2 weeks and he fancied himself an expert on the Vancouver Island tides?  He also said something about it being "too late" to move camp....if you have water flooding your tent, it is never too late to move (IMHO).  You got a good idea of the strength of the storms in some of the footage of them fishing in the wind/rain.  The way it was sheeting across the water like it was....I know I've never seen it storm that hard.

Folks here wondered why the show would spend so many episodes on the hiking part... with only 3 teams left, it's starting to make sense.  How many episodes are left?  Here's my take on the rest of the show from here and my rank of those most likely to win and why (in order):

Baird Bros:  If they can keep catching fish, they have the body bulk, youth and (I'll call it) Bro-chismo to get through tough times.  They feed off each other (good and bad) and, unlike Chris/Brody, I can't imagine one of them trying to quit without the other kicking his ass and telling him to man up.

Brook/Dave:  If only for the cabin they're building.  They need to get a decent food source because Brook is pushing herself harder than she should and won't let Dave tell her to slow down.  Bottom line is that she doesn't have the body bulk to survive losing another 40 lbs like all other previous winners had to endure.

Pete/Sam:  If it were just Sam, I'd be more likely to see him going to the end but I fear Pete's age may be too big a liability.  They need everything to go right for them to outlast the other teams.....they have the skills to catch fish but they need a better shelter and better attitudes.

I forget which Baird brother said something about how the wind just rips thru the shelter and brings in such cold air and I actually yelled "YOU HAVE NO WALLS" at the TV.  After almost 2 weeks their shelter is still just a tarp. Even I, a devoted couch potato and back seat driver, know you need a sturdy shelter, WITH WALLS.

Wow.  That was bad.  That was really, really bad.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but two of the shelters were basically tarps thrown over a stick, right?  That was the best the two camper brothers could do?  Seriously?  And one of them didn't even have a tarp floor to protect against ground water?  I can't even...with this group...  Man, when you think of the caliber of the cast from the Patagonia season and these pathetic losers it is embarrassing that The History Channel even aired this season.  This is just so bad.  Early on I wondered if maybe having the other person to interact with was going to pull focus from the task at hand which is shelter building, food procurement, fire building, and stockpiling of wood and other resources...you know, survival shit.   Turns out that seems to be the case.

Except for Pete & Sam and Brooke & Dave.  They are working well together.  Not coincidentally, the camper on both teams actually worked on the survival shit while awaiting their hikers.  I do worry about Pete saying it was too late to move their shelter, as the storm tide was licking at the exterior wall...  Yes!  It will be hard work.  Yes!   It will undo some of the hard work you've already done.  Doooooo eeeeeeeeeeeeet.  As for Brook & Dave, Dave is kind of getting on my nerves a little bit.  Something about his "What a woman" comment grated on me--almost like Brooke was his possession, and he got himself a good one.  I wonder if the reason she's trying so hard and running herself into the ground is in order to continually impress him.  She was much more aware of her limitations when she was on her own.  I hope they get their cabin built and she can put up her feet.  They're still cooking in their shelter though, I hope that doesn't come back to (literally) bite them in the ass.  No signs of predators lately, though, so that's good.

Also wondered about Pete and Sam building a new shelter without having an axe. Guess they never filmed that reveal after Sam finally met up with his father. Maybe Pete didn't make a big deal over it since getting upset wasn't going to change the situation.

Is there a list somewhere of everything/one you have to thank?  In case I ever go on the show, I guess I need to get it all straight.  I haven't noticed anyone thanking the fish.  Or the crabs.  Or the limpets.  Isn't that speciest?

Two weeks?  According to my sister-in-law from Louisiana, the guys stay at duck camp that long.  My dad was in the army and he missed everyone's birthday all the time.  Apparently he almost missed me being born.  They can all just buck up.

I had the same thought about this being just a training run for next season where they bring back all the people who had their partner tap out.  See how they do if they don't have to crawl through the brush for days.  The only non-camper to tap out was the guy who really hurt himself, right?

My dad consistently got my birthday wrong. It was entrenched as tradition, that he'd call me a day or two before, or after, chuckling "Happy birthday, sweetheart!" and then we'd debate who was actually correct. DAD YES I AM PRETTY SURE OF MY OWN BIRTH DATE.

I don't have much to add, because this season has just been such a bleary, lens-smeared meh. I still would love to have been a fly on the wall in production, as 1. crappy video rolled in and 2. everybody up and quit in two lousy weeks. They must have been in full-blown panic. Here's hoping they've learned not to mess with success, because this season's concept is a total dud.
