One of my black friends says she hates it when people tell her they "don't see color," because being black is a big part of who she is and it's like people are erasing her identity when they say that. She'll be out at an event and someone will be trying to point her out to someone else, and they'll use every descriptor they can -- tall, hair pulled back, red dress, whatever -- aside from her race, which she finds ridiculous.

To me when someone does that, it's not just erasing someone else's identity. It's willfully ignoring their identity. You can clearly see the color of her skin (or whatever visible trait it is that you refuse to say out loud) but you're just pretending not to.

Often in shows that deliberately use colorblind casting, once they have finally cast specific actors the writers try to later add things to the characters' backstories that are related. Joan Watson on Elementary is a good example because they don't try to pretend that she isn't Asian (heh, or female since Watson is traditionally a male character). They don't bring it up in every episode but they have mentioned things about her family, her upbringing, etc.

On a practical level, it definitely made sense for Villanelle to describe Eve as Asian since that is one the main things that would set Eve apart from other people who Nadia has encountered in prison.

The antidote to this, imo, is to be sure you're using the same standard for white people. By this I mean, if you'd describe a stranger as a tall, handsome, black man, then make it a habit to describe another as a tall, handsome, white man. The dastardly temptation is to view white people as Default, and every thing else as as requiring a qualifier.  Even Sandra Oh admitted the tendency when she was reading this script: she didn't see a role for herself until her agent pointed out that they wanted her to play Eve. Acknowledge everyone's color!

Well if I am describing someone that looks different from me, I would certainly mention it.. Lol the default would be if the person looks like me in a roomful of people who look like me.

Anyway I was almost taken aback by her acting the girl with her yelling 'let me out'. Served her right indeed. Her smirking was getting  on my nerves.

I thought this was much better than the ridiculousness of last week, but I had a problem with the premise of this episode. If Konstantin wanted Nadia dead, was it really necessary to have Oksana involved? I mean, if he had the connections and resources to smuggle Oksana into the prison, I guess he could have easily arranged with one of the guards for an "accident" to happen to Nadia. It looked like they were setting her up and I'm surprised Oksana fell for it. I guess the point was to teach her a lesson, because they could have simply killed her if they thought she had become too much of a trouble.

I really hope this does not become some kind of a sob story about helpless girls being tricked into becoming assassins. They might be true about Nadia, who we know pretty much nothing about, but it's clear that Oksana is a natural born predator who revels in killing people and as such, she cannot be redeemed, no matter how entertaining she might be.

Only watched the first couple of episodes.

It's one thing to sustain this pursuit of one villain for a whole season but will they do it for multiple seasons?

Are there multiple books which depict this story unfolding over several years and dozens of murders?

Also curious about the disparate targets -- a mafia guy in Sicily, a perfume executive, some guy in a nondescript office building in Bulgaria.

If they kill enough prominent people, I would think there would be much more than some off the books investigation by a small group.

Thing is, even if she changes her MO, she's leaving fingerprints, strands of hair and other physical evidence.  She's not being investigated by some conventional police but British intelligence.  As the body count goes up, there are more chances for physical evidence to be matched.

So far they haven't shown her preparing for her kids like staking out her victim to learn their routine and choosing the optimal time to strike.  For instance the Vienna kill was in some CCTV blind spot, which are hard to find in many cities, especially a place like London.

There doesn't seem to be methodical planning or indications that she has access to great intel, like maybe having a map of CCTVs in a modern city.  Well Kim Bodnia character somehow knows there's a clandestine investigative unit headed by Eve.

Something that I've noticed in a lot of "colorblind" casting is how weirdly reluctant the writers seem to be to note that the character is a particular race even when they should. It's like they think that noting that so-and-so is black/asian/etc. would somehow lessen the impact of casting colorblind?

Right. I would think one of the benefits of color-blind casting would be to show an audience, to use this example, that an Asian woman can be a funny, brave, cool lead. I read some article where Sandra Oh said that when her agent sent her the script, she kept looking for the Asian sidekick role and when she didn't find one, she called her agent, who told her she would be reading for Eve. Sandra said she cried, realizing that a career in tv/movies had brainwashed her into believing she was just sidekick/supporting material.

I always roll my eyes when people say they don't see race. The Colbert Report used to mock this by having "Stephen" say ridiculous things like, "I don't see race. People tell me I'm white, and I believe them because I'm a member of a restricted country club."

Things were a bit too neat and tidy for me in this episode. Bill, the baby, "I'm going to die..."

Plus he and Eve seemed to be careless, given that they know the killer is targeting Eve. It's hard for me to believe that Eve wouldn't have had a heightened sense of alarm and been searching her environment constantly.

I'm disappointed they got rid of Bill. His colleague chemistry with Eve was delightful. Maybe the actor got another gig.

And Niko's passive aggressive behavior is annoying.

Still, I love the show and excited for a second season.

I understand why they killed him, to raise the stakes for Eve even more.

He saw Villanelle so of course he had to die or Eve's pursuit of Villanelle ends pretty quickly.

But he acted stupidly.  He supposedly has field experience.  Does that mean he knows physical combat or was he always just an office intelligence analyst?  Does he know anything about surveilling targets without making it so obvious?

Forget about calling Eve, who seems unlikely to be any more adept at combat or surveillance than him.  If they were both following her, she could kill both of them easily.

He should just have called his German colleague directly, have them apprehend her.  What was the point in following her if not to get the Germans to take her into custody?  Even if he was mistaken in suspecting her, they could question her.

Unless he was James Bond instead of some schlub who'd been a house pet in an intelligence agency office in recent years, he had no business tailing her and risking a physical confrontation.

He could have video taped or took pictures of her at least, get her actual face to law enforcement agencies throughout Europe rather than just have that artist rendering.

Looking at that clip, I think Villanelle set him up, made it real obvious to Bill that she was following Eve.  She was basically on top of them staring at Eve.

When he accosted her, prevented her from being on that train, she was nonplussed.  If a stranger prevents you from getting on a train you were waiting for, most people would be pretty upset.

But instead she calmly leaves the station, leading him to that club.  She probably staked out the route and the location.

Still it made no sense for him to confront her and then followed her.  How did she know he'd take the bait rather than take pictures of her and call the police?

Maybe it's because I love Fiona Shaw so much but I'm not yet prepared to accept that she's dirty. Uses sketchy methods, sure. I can see why she'd cut Eve out of things; Eve's prone to going off-script, speaks out of turn almost constantly, almost gives up important information, and is clearly fixated on Villanelle. Something Carolyn has been saying from the beginning is that this isn't about Villanelle, it's about who she works for.

When Eve said to Konstantine "you never called me sausage before", I guess the conversation at breakfast was code between Carolyn and him and Carolyn told Oksana at the noon visit??!!!

I was hoping we would get to see the note Nadia left for Eve. I wonder if Carolyn intercepted it.

So Eve is Anna's substitute to Oksana because of her hair?

Eve took Oksana's fake passport and cash. Will we see Eve helping her escape the country next week.

It's odd Anna would want to forgive her. Oksana made a cake and had balloons after she castrated her husband. They definitely had a deeper relationship.

Why is Anna making a big cake and not know what to do with it?

Niko don't fall the voicemail Eve sent!

Nice to see Villanelle with a glint in her eyes as she was trying to flirt with the female guard through the door's slot.

Anton...the new Konstatin...for 2 minutes...Villanelle is Back!

A crystal glass thrown as a distraction...Villanelle has better reflexes than that...lame...

Who else expected to see Eve and Kenny snacking on Anna's cake as they watched the video feeds?

Do all assassin shows share the same casting agent? Villanelle's quirky bald Russian handler looked like the quirky bald Russian guy on "Barry."

I can buy this explanation. I want to believe there's a good reason, too. Except, everyone in the transport van and its escort car got killed, with help from one of the guards, and Villanelle/Oksana ended up with Konstantin. Carolyn trusts Konstantin, so maybe he deceived her. He can now honestly say that Oksana tried to kill him, which would likely help maintain Carolyn's faith in him. I do want to believe she isn't dirty... well, except for her letters to/from Russian lovers.

Why is Eve slut shaming Carolyn by asking her if she was just getting in...are those are the same clothes she wore yesterday?

What a coincidence...Konstantin is eating at the breakfast buffet at the hotel...duh... Eve...

Why did Eve wrinkle her nose in disgust when she sniffed the white coat?

Did she recognize the Villanelle perfume on the coat?

Hope Nico is not answering because he is pissed and not dead....

SEASON FINALE!

Quote

Villanelle's mission proves anything but straightforward, forcing her to take drastic measures; Eve makes a shocking discovery, which leads her right to Villanelle and an electrifying confrontation from which neither will emerge unscathed.

Carolyn: Nadia has been murdered in prison. The good news is the buffet is open.

Carolyn: Go back to London. Traveling makes you rude.

Villanelle: You smell of cabbage.

Eve: OMIGAWD.
Kenny: I know.
Eve: These [letters] are filthy.
Kenny: I know.
Eve: What's a butterfly bead?
Kenny: I decided not to google that.

Eve: Are you okay with this?
Kenny: About [Carolyn] being dodgy or about her being filthy?
Eve: Both.
Kenny: I'm not entirely surprised by either, to be honest.

Prison guard: I don't like girls.
Villanelle: You haven't tried this one.

Eve: We think [Oksana] had connections with a very dangerous organization and we're trying to work out why they would have chosen her to help get insight into them.
Anna: Well, she was a punctual student. She was very good at languages. She liked attention, and she castrated and murdered my husband. Would they have liked that?
Eve: Possibly.

Villanelle: Why would [the Twelve] want me in prison? I'm amazing.
Konstantin: Do you know how many times I had to argue to give you another chance?
Villanelle: More or less than five?
Konstantin: More.
Villanelle: More or less than ten?

Villanelle: You hit me with a log!

Eve: You can say todger but you can't say sex?
Kenny: I know, but todger sounds sweet.
Eve: Really?
Kenny: But the other's too real.
Eve: Penis?
Kenny: Yeah.

Although this isn't one of those shows that always has fakeouts, I wonder if Carolyn visiting Villanelle will end up being a red herring, like she just coincidentally went to talk to her about Konstantin or something before the Twelve busted her out of prison. The other part of me is reminding me that sometimes the most obvious answer is the solution and in that case, Carolyn is one of the Twelve. I suppose the middle ground type answer would be that Carolyn was getting her out to help with the case, but she was so adamant about Eve dropping her line of inquiry and going back to London immediately that it makes me question what she was up to.

The look on Villanelle's face when she walked back to see all the dead bodies was pure delight. "You guys killed all of these people FOR ME?"

Anton was stupid to hand her a loaded gun so he kind of deserved that shot to the head.

Poor Kenny! I can't imagine having to read your mother's dirty letters (let alone multiple times!).

Anna was so helpful that I was just waiting for her to attack Eve, but she really did just want to give her cake and let her read Villanelle's letters, which seemed weird. It seemed even weirder when Anna said she wants to forgive her.

I didn't take it that way. I think Eve was just really slow on that particular uptake. I suspect her first suspicion was that Carolyn was out doing spy-stuff, not having Ugandan Discussions.

A thing I noticed and approve: Villanelle's post-beating makeup is really good. And they're avoiding the whole 'one little cut right on the brow or cheekbone where it looks sexy' trope, and giving her a green-bruised, swollen jaw.

Same here. It's a bit curious since she already knows Carolyn has slept with both Konstantin and Vladimir, but I can also buy that Eve is so blinkered about work that it takes some effort for the synapses to pop. Plus, I think like many of us she doesn't want to think of her boss in any other context other than work.

Talk about From Russia with Love, huh Carolyn?

I've suspected Carolyn from the start, but now I wonder if this is all a red herring, and she is doing something sketchy for a good reason, or is a mole within the 12? Or maybe she is just super sketchy, I have no clue. I kind of hope she is more morally grey than evil though, I just love Fiona so much. I wonder if Eve will end up going to Vlad with all of this? I dont think he has anything to do with this 12 stuff, either way.

I think Ana wants to forgive Villanelle as a way to get closure for the whole mess, or is acknowledging that Villanelle is clearly several several french fries short of a Happy Meal. Eve better watch her ass, because this is clearly a pattern for Villanelle to get obsessed with attractive, intelligent brunette women who have husbands, but may also have some interest in her. Hopefully Eves husband never meets her crazy self. Even Ana said Eve was clearly her type. If they go further into her background, I bet they would find more killings.

I really love this look the actress playing Villanelle gets in her eye when she gets excited (usually about killing), it takes on this creepy manic look. Almost the opposite of when she got truly pissed off at the end of last week when she got stuck in the hole. The fun, flirty/bored look went away to an almost animal rage. Its quite disconcerting.

Poor Kenny looked more grossed out associating his mom with Butterfly Beads than with possible treason.

But can he continue to be involved if Constantin's on the outs with Villanelle?

I don't want Oksana to kill Eve or "win" or anything like that, but I don't really want her to die either.  I think that the actress is doing a phenomenal job, I can't take my eyes off her when she's on the screen, so I really hope she's in season 2, as implausible as that may seem.

I think chances are better than good that Villanelle will be the center of this show as long as it lasts, because the TV show was based on a series of novels that were ALL centered on Villanelle.

I think the dynamic between Villanelle and Konstantin was so layered in this one; it looked like the shoe was on the other foot and he was the one B.S.ing her, and she had tears in her eyes....so is that because she actually HAS some normal human emotions, or that she's programmed herself well enough to show emotion when she feels they should be?

I think it was because for one brief moment someone was telling her some things she might have always wanted to hear: "I am so proud of you. I love you." "You are more powerful than any other person because of what you have in here. You're so different. You have something strong. You should be proud." That thing that makes you different from other people, it makes you strong not a monster, I love you. Like how Anna said that when Villanelle arrived at the school everyone took a step back but she stepped forward and gave her "extra love" which is likely what led to Villanelle's obsession.

But she knew it was bullshit and he was just stalling.

Very weird. Like Eve said, there weren't just a "few" letters and Anna had kept them all that time? The letters sent to her from the murderer who castrated and killed her husband? She kept the gifts, she kept the pictures. That fixation was definitely reciprocated.

I love the Scooby Crew that Eve has assembled! More of that, less of the killer, To this point, I have no interest in her point of view.  At all. I don't find her clever, or amusing or engaging.  I find her character to be trying to hard to be fascinating.  Perhaps that will change as the story unfolds.  Regardless of that, I'm really enjoying the show.

I just watched the first two episodes of the show, and this is where I am with Villanelle. I just don’t find her nearly as interesting as the show seems to find her. Undoubtedly the story with “Anna” will partially explain whatever “unfulfilled with work” crisis she’s going through, so maybe I’ll find her more interesting as the mystery of Anna unrolls, but as of right now I want the show to give half her screen time to Eve’s Scooby gang. She’s a childish psychopath who is becoming unfulfilled with work (and will inevitably have her flame re-lit, as it were, by Eve). Done and done. Less would be a LOT more with her right now.

Also I give it two episodes till she kills her handler and goes rogue, and four till she kills Eve’s husband. I expected the pretty pretty boyfriend to last another episode but I’m glad he died relatively quickly and painlessly.

On the other hand, Eve and the Scooby gang are AWESOME. Sandra Oh is killing it in the role (no pun intended) and she and her two coworkers have fantastic chemistry. And Fiona Shaw is gem (and also may not be long for this world, it feels like). “Extraordinary.” More of them, please!

I wouldn’t be surprised if the dickswab boss is the leak (related to the dead wife?), but I’m also wondering if it’s Fiona Shaw somehow. I’m not sure what the angle would be but....

I think there's a lot more to Nico then his current persona of calm, homemaking, supportive kind of guy. When Eve lost it and hit and shoved him he said something along the lines of that she didn't want to dwell in those feelings, or give in to them, or become them. I can't remember the words exactly but it was him warning her that she shouldn't want to stay this person who was angry and raging and wild. When he said it I got a sense that he once had been an angry, wild person himself and that he'd had to make a change to survive and be happy. I may be reading too much into a line or two of dialogue, but his expression and the way he immediately tried to back down and give her some space made me think he was acting as someone who'd once been into those kind of feelings. Kind of like a recovering addict looking at someone who is newly addicted.

All that to say, I think there's quite a bit of backstory with their marriage and their individual trajectories for us yet to learn. And some of it may explain why Nico is being more patient with Eve then she would seem to deserve.

I got the same impression - and also that he knows Eve extremely well - the zinger about her fascination with Villanelle was spot on and that's why (imo) Eve started punching - because that punch landed.

True enough, for me too, unless said husband wanted me to quit that really exciting job. I don't think she hates her husband, she just doesn't particularly love him, I think.

I was bothered that they weren't particularly circumspect in Russia. When Konstantin, as he left, used the exact - unusual - description of the cocktail that Shaw used, it was clear they were being observed (at best) and recorded (at worst). Yet they yammered on about things they should have said privately in a large outside setting with noise. Same with the phone call to Shaw's son.

My one complaint is that I feel like we aren't getting any insight into Eve's thought process. When we get something, like comments about her not liking Niko or feeling like she's the only one who can catch Villanelle, it's not new information or really deepening my understanding of her.

I did like Kenny saying she sounded jealous, tho, because she sure did.
