X-Files Fanfiction: Mulder, She Wrote

Recommended Posts

I think the MSR fanfic, especially of this genre was one of the reasons I was more in the noromo camp back in the day or at least in the I really don't care camp.

This show clearly still has a fandom so I would not be at all surprised if we did get a rash of 50 Shades stories in the near future.

In addition to the strawberry-scented hair (which always felt super OOC to me) and the alabaster/porcelain skin, there would always be a mention of gazing deeply into Scully's azure/sapphire/aquamarine/other blue gemstones I'm forgetting the name of eyes or in the "best" of the genre, orbs.

I'd forgotten about all those long ago tropes like twins, scented hair and Mulder saving Scully from crappy boyfriends, because it's not like Scully could defend herself. Of course the flipside were the stories that had Mulder so broken he'd cry at a paper cut.

I believe Scully's eyes were described as deep pools of sapphires. One good thing is that the fanfic seemed to get better around the time Scully had cancer and became infertile. My guilty pleasure back then was Badfic when people would parody some of the more ridiculous tropes. Most of them are no long on the internet, but I spent many an hour LOL at the more outrageous ones.

My personal favorites were the AU post-colonization. Still feel like CC miss an opportunity by not making something dealing with the 2012 date.

Adding any mention of an FBI Ball. Especially in the early years, many writers wrote about this mythical event and had M&S acting like teenagers asking each other to the prom. Of course Mulder would be wowed by Scully's alabaster/porcelain skin and she in turned would be turned on by his tux. The rest of attendees would talk about Spooky Mulder and the Ice Queen behind their backs but M&S only had eyes for each other. Naturally Skinner loved to see his two agents get together.

If this fandom was started ten years later, I'm sure there'd be some weird M&S type fanfic that would get made into 50 Shades of Grey fic.

Word. Anything like that makes me squirm.

First names draw me out too. Regardless of how they're being used.

I like good characterization in fic, no matter what the rating.

I've read some good NC-17 stuff out there. Not out of character. Balance is key in my opinion in that area.

I'm laughing so hard at the concept of an FBI ball.  I mean, I guess the FBI might have some sort of annual banquet thing attached to a conference, but it's not Prom: FBI Addition. If the series started now, would this FBI Prom fanfic involve Skinner helping to orchestrate Mulder asking Scully a'la teens going all out to ask their date to the 'big dance' (I read a story today about how a local teen involved the cops to ask her date to prom.)

I haven't read XF ff, but I've read ones for other shows and it really is hit and miss.  Staying true to the characters is my benchmark.  If I could potentially see the characters acting that way on screen, then I'm good.

I so miss the Spooky Awards for fanfic. The work they celebrated was fantastic and really set a standard. I discovered so many great authors through it. Now I've rediscovered the X-Files and things have understandably changed. I feel old. I'm being guided by "kudos" numbers on ao3 but it just isn't working for me.

I recently found all my fanfic - written back in the day and had a great time re-reading it all. It seems like a lifetime ago. I even wrote two novel length, how I found the time or the imagination I will never know. I was actually surprised to see the website still there. I suppose it must be true that nothing really dies lol

This hasn't seen the light of day for a very long time. When I wrote it I got some fabulous feedback and it was archived all over the place. It was also shortlisted for a 'Spooky award' - possibly my finest moment ever. Didn't win one but the shortlist was enough. Its novel length. If you read it and want to give feedback, ignore the e-mail address on the site. Its inactive and won't reach me.

I just bookmarked it to check out when I've got time!  Thanks!

I just finished chapter 7 and I'm already addicted to knowing what happens next! This is tonight's read, plays like an episode with mystery all intwined.

I was sorting through some stuff today and found part 3 of Lydia Bowers 'dance without sleeping' series. I'm pretty sure it came in 6 parts. I've managed to find parts 5+2 through google but drawn a blank with the rest. Anyone have any clue where to find it in its entirety? I need to know lol

Yes, it's here at the Wayback'd version of Chronicle X -- Dance Without Sleeping .

Can anyone recommend a really good M+S fics thats a decent length? Relationship led but not all hearts and flowers? With a really good dose of angst - maybe an injury? I just finished 'dance without sleeping' and because of the total lack of M+S angst in this latest season.....well I need some ;) Plus I'm laid up in bed dying of boredom.

Goshen by Bone Tree  (and then after that the rest of the stories in the series, all very long and excellent)

Mindprints by Analise

Sixty Degrees of Separation by Barbara D.

Increments by DashaK

Syntax6 does great MSR with angst within larger stories, too.

By Falling In And In by Aloysia Virgata  will always be one of my favorites.  Plenty of angst, and it nails post-series M/S in a way that not many can.

So excited to jump into some fic! Xfiles is one of my few show obsessions where I could easily find great fic (ok, maybe not easy, but there were some great authors out there). Love me some angst, case fic, and good characterization with a little (oh this brings me back) UST and a smidge of RST

Question: are the Syntax6 stories supposed to be read in the order on the page, or do they all stand alone?

There are two or three that should be read in sequence.  She should tell in the beginning if the story is a sequel to another one.

Most are standalone. Very very good standalones. The 'shoe' series should be read in order. I couldn't put them down. Isometey is amazing. Don't read 'Split the Lark' unless you are prepared to shed a tear. I'm bereft now I've finished them all so any more recs gratefully received :)

I was reading on the fanfiction.net site and came across one with multiple chapters that focused on Season 6. It had chapters chronologically about every episode from the point of view of Dana Scully. I'm talking about her thoughts and perception about everything happening to her and Mulder during each case. You know those M&S conversations during "Quagmire" & "Detour"... She writes those for each episode and gets the banter right! The scenes take place in between what we see in the episodes so it's like extra scenes or what happened behind the scenes. The author really has the character of Scully down along with Mulder's humour and I really enjoyed it so much I wished she had written this for every other season.

Then I looked at the author profile and found out she has indeed written for every episode, Seasons 1-7 and for a moment it felt like Christmas morning. Of course it's a long epic thing to go through Scully's POV for almost all the episodes but I'm now halfway through season 1 so I thought I'd share. I'm sure the shipping between them grows with the story. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4995049/1/Seasons-First

I'm not sure if link works or not but the author on the site is BeshterAngelus

Just thought y'all might be interested that I just got done reading the infamous Chili's fanfic that was brought up in an episode thread. You know it was smutty but pretty well written. I liked that it was in 'Mulder the porn watcher's' POV.

Holy crap, I remember that one.  I read a lot of XF smut back in the day.  A lot of it's a big blur, but snippets of the really good and the really bad remain in my head.  I just remember that one being surprisingly good for the scenario, but no specifics.  What's the title?  I may have to re-read it.

Ooh hello fanfic thread! XF was the first fanfic I ever read as well...mostly because there was no internet when I watched Scarecrow and Mrs King and Moonlighting.

PAULA GRAVES.  What a blast from the past that name is. I think I read everything she wrote.

Now I'm going to have to go digging. A friend of mine wrote a few stories that were good (I was proud I brought her into it and she even dedicated one to me) and I think she even won a newbie award.  I need to go try to remember what her pen name was.  I also have fond memories of M/S having sex in a lake while camping (might have been around raining sleeping bags) and I read this really out there fanfic where they get pulled into a world with magic and Mulder is a magician and Scully is a healer. Sounds absolutely crazy and not really my thing but I ended up loving it.  I used to have it saved on hard disk. Gotta find that too.  So I'm not any help in providing names or links I'm just reminiscing out loud here guys.

HA!  I was totally into those shows too, and always so disappointed when none of my friends wanted to endlessly discuss the nature of David & Maddie's relationship.  The internet came along at just the right time for my 'shipping little heart.  It's probably the reason XF remains my favorite show of all time, it was the first one I could discuss in depth with other fans.

It was called "The Magician," and it was by Jennifer Lyon and Suzanne Bickerstaffe. There were two sequels too. It really was fantastic. I, too, kept a copy, and I read it probably once a year. Jennifer Lyon is writing (and publishing) Paranormal Romance now.

Another favorite of mine was "No Greater Love" by Karen Rasch. She is an incredible writer!

Yes! I'm going to go find and reread now thank you!!! I think back in the day I emailed one of the writers to ask some stupid question just to have an excuse to chat with her I loved the story so much.

And Karen Rasch another blast from the past. I think I loved that story too.

Yay! Found it! My friend Maria Nicole and her stories. Thank you for the link to Gossamer I found her there.  We've lost touch since college and this is taking be back. My fault she started watching on my teeny tiny tv in my dorm room and I maybe introduced fanfic to her world.  I'm proud. She was good.

I think this was her first.  I remember reading this before she posted it.
