Canadian Commercials: Hunting for House Hippos

Recommended Posts

I love that ad!

My top current dislike are the ads for Next Magazines. Esp the woman walking through the airport while her husband drags 2 suitcases plus her big rack of magazines. I just want to slap her smug face.

LOL House Hippos. That PSA fooled my mom for a long time, and it still freaks her out sometimes. :) (Not in a bad way, just in a surprising way). I think she just wants house hippos to be real.

And yeah, the Next Magazines commercials are bad. Then again I haven't read magazines in years and this feels like another old media last gasp more than anything.

I want the house hippos to be real, along with the tiny giraffe that Russian guy had in the cable ad a while back.

Actually, I want a tiny giraffe way more than I want a house hippo.

I don't know why I would subscribe to Next when I can get most of the magazines I want to skim on download with my library card.

I pretty much loathe all Canadian ads. They are just so bloody stupid and annoying as hell. From Harold the Jewelry Buyer to Russell Oliver, they are so bush league, it's embarrassing. Once in a while, one might air that is actually smart and witty but that is rare. And the worst thing is, they are so fucking repetitive. Every commercial break, you see the same, stupid, lame ads. It never varies.

The two worst now, are the Fallsview Casino ads, where people start shrieking and falling about like mental patients whose Thorazine has worn off, and those annoying Trivago ads. I don't know WHERE they got this guy, but a worse "spokesperson" you couldn't find. He looks disheveled, stoned, or he's coming off a 4 day meth bender. They should be saying that if you want to "disappear" for a few days, be it booze or your drug of choice, then book at room through these guys. The cops, your spouse and your rehab sponsor will never find you.

Hey, I know the name Fallsview Casino -- I used to hear their radio ads while listening to Sabres hockey online, on WGR. I'd love to see the ad you mentioned, but I'm in Texas.

My new favourite commercial is the Schick Hydro "Becoming My Dad". I'm guessing it's Canadian because of the large maple leaf in the background. I love the faux PSA style, the Dad dance moves and the friends' reactions.

I think its so nice of the Trivago people to give that nice homeless guy a gig. Seriously, did the dude know he was going to be filmed? He looks like he is just home from a round the world hotel fact finding trip.

I use "I smell burnt toast" sometimes like other people would movie quotes.

You and me both, Athena. Also "Fly, no, but he can leap over tall buildings" and "You never know, it might be worth something someday!" Joe Schuster, will you stop... being a source of quotable moments of Canadian heritage and American pop-culture?

I have no interest in Sports on TV (or sports in general to be honest). So Roger's new "Get as much money out of you as possible" hockey plan has no interest for me. Especially since half the situations that old hockey player? is hawking are situations where you should be watching/interacting with other people, NOT watching people skate around on ice.

I suppose if you are interested in Sports you might recognize the guy (and I know the name when I heard it mentioned at some point but I still don't care); but the commercial itself just irks and annoys me. Thank goodness for PVR Fast Forward.

So I guess some phone survey taking company has changed their name and they decided to do an ad campaign for that change? Well their ads are awkward as hell, and I'm not sure what the point of it is. People who don't want to take surveys aren't going to take them just because you've changed your name. And suddenly cursing on TV (and the Radio where I've heard most of these ads) doesn't make you any more appealing or 'cute'. For me, it just makes me wonder WTH the commercial was about.

The anti-DUI public service commercial just drives me up a wall. Is it supposed to be a club song? Is the singer supposed to be the one arrested? Why the hair then?

Is that the one singing about taking a cab, call a friend, take a bus, etc? I think the Singer is just the singer encouraging to do anything but DUI.

Just caught one of Pennington's Plus fashion commercials, and I like it. Nice to see a normal person in a 'fashion' add. I youtubed some of the others and they are nice looking all around.

I will confess to loving the Telus commercials with their, I'm guessing, CGI animals.  I'm a sucker for anything to do with animals so I fall for these everytime.  I still don't have a Telus phone, but love watching the commercials anyway.

Pennington's and Addition Elle are good stores (both are owned by Reitmans and have lots of joint stores) and we are quite lucky to have them. They do great ads and have plus sized mannequins in the stores. Great quality stuff too.

I am a Texan, but I followed the Pennington's link. OMG! Ya'll have pretty plus-sized models and have pretty underthings for them to wear! If the price is right, I may have to think about summering up there with ya'll.  In addition, the ads were cool and funny.

I saw that yesterday; skipped most of them as I usually do, but I stopped and watched once, and it teared me up big time. '97, that's almost 20 years ago. Damn. :(

Just saw a Trivago commercial where the guy starts out looking like the guy but ends up in a suit and all done up. They listened!

Trivago dude has had 3 makeovers.  He is less creepy now and they're dressing him better so that his freakishly long torso isn't exaggerated.
