Everybody Lives! Fanfiction

Recommended Posts

I've noticed a lot of fics ignore or rewrite Exit Wounds that killed Tosh and Owen and COE which killed Ianto.  So, I thought a title about everyone living would be appropriate because fanfiction gives you the freedom to ressurect the characters you like best.

I wanted to post some fics I enjoy and hope you post suggestions as well.  I've found I really enjoy Torchwood fanfiction.  Sometimes it fills in the blanks the writers left in the show for me.

Happy Families - alternate universe fic where Ianto and Jack get to know each other when their siblings are getting married.  I like this one because the interaction is great, and it deals with Ianto trying to adjust to being attracted to a man.

Harkness and Jones - This is a different take on Ianto's job.  He's not what he appears to be, and it's fun to read.

Our Last Night Before the World Ends - Jack and Ianto's last night before COE begins.

The War at Home - Jack and Ianto are having a cold war and Gwen is not pleased.  It's an interesting exploration of some issues Jack and Ianto might have.

50 First Dates - Torchwood Style[/ur] - Ianto can't retain new memories, but he and Jack still find a way to bond.

Don't Stay[/ur] - Ianto tries to set boundaries to avoid too strong of an emotional attachment to Jack.

You Can Stay - The fic involves Ianto trying to navigate having an open relationship with Jack.

There was a fic that involves John Hart kidnapping Ianto where they end up having adventures together called "Don't You Want to be On the Good Side for Once".  It manages to be a fun fic, but it's impossible to find.  If you find it please share the link.

I <3 you for creating this thread, Luckylyn.  I love good fanfic, but for some reason I've never gotten around to hunting down Torchwood fic, so I'm thrilled with the suggestions.

I can contribute one suggestion:

The only Torchwood fic I've read is Bluebird, by Basingstoke, which is a crossover with The Addams Family.  (I came across this one because I consider the Addams Family to be the little black dress of crossover fiction.  It goes with everything.)  Anyway, I recommend it if you like very unusual premises - in this case, the idea that Ianto is an Addams.  It's very good (as is all of Basingstoke's stuff), but the Addamses come across a bit darker than usual.

And while it's not technically fanfic, some of the Torchwood novels have been very good.  I like The Twilight Streets, by Gary Russell, very much. (The storyline involves Bilis and is rather creepy in a way that makes it a good Halloween season kind of read.)

My absolute favorite fanfic ever written:  http://solsticezero.livejournal.com/16632.html

ETA:  I happened to just reread this fic -- still my favourite ever (not just Torchwood, either) -- and found my comments from four years ago.  Surprisingly, I still stand by what I said.

This second one I suggest is a tough, so cold it's almost OOC, fanfic but I like it -- the focus is on the Jack/Ianto dynamic before Cyberwoman but after Ianto is hired.  We were rehashing the old debate "did they/didn't they" over in the Jack/Ianto thread and I said I'd post this link if I could find it.

http://mcparrot.livejournal.com/4602.html  (This is part one.  There is a second part linked to on the fanfic.)

ETA:  Here is a huge, long overview interpretive fic about canon:  https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5631194/1/What-is-Essential-is-Invisible-to-the-Eye

Cat will remember it well.

It was very popular back in the day.

I ran hot and cold on it, honestly.

Anything by Solstice0.

(That should be her master index.)

At the very end of her index is the Virtual Season Three -- http://tw-itallchanges.livejournal.com -- she wrote a  bit for it.  Are you guys familiar with that?  I recommend it.  Most of my favorite authors took part.

If you're curious about that "It All Changes" link -- here is the source:  http://tw-itallchanges.livejournal.com/3027.html

The fan written series was fun to read as it was going up (or, "airing", I suppose.)

Just chatting about fanfics set while Jack is gone between season 1 and 2, i found two that i like

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7781596/1/Switching-Ranks

This one is a short funny one with the Team dealing with their new roles

And this one is one of my all time fav stories, it's an interesting idea for a case but also being set while Jack is gone. I think it really captures the team well and how they would work and despite no Jack. And how Jack's presence still looms very large over them but doesn't stop them from doing the job

This is the only Something Borrowed fanfic i like cause it's set after the ep and has nothing to do with the ep LOL. All other fanfics basically are trying to work out why they are all like they are ? Whether it's Ianto leaving or Rhys leaving or Jack explaining or Gwack getting together and none of them work, just like the ep, all over the place.

But this is Owen , Jack and Ianto with a little bit of Tosh after a mistake in the field but it's funny and sweet.

I just ran into Five Days Forward a couple of days ago (by accident) and loved it!  I couldn't believe that after I was finished, I wanted another story that focused on Gwen and Ianto and how their relationship changed due to her time jump.  I really like fic that takes Gwen's character and grows her in an organic way while addressing issues that show writers created but ignored with her.

I agree.  The fic calls Gwen on her flaws while still being sympathetic to her.

After All - Jack’s eternity, he came to understand, was as incongruous and contradictory as he was; he’d forever be the here and now, he’d forever only have the here and now. Jack/Ianto. Post-Exit Wounds.

Better Wrong - Ianto leaves because it seems like the only reasonable thing to do. Telephone talk ensues. Jack/Ianto. Post-Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
