Roseanne Revival

Recommended Posts

In 2018, it is not acceptable to have sitcoms on broadcast television spewing hateful messages, imo.

Furthermore, it is not consistent with the Dan’s character of the past to go from being a non racist to someone who uses the term “illegals”.

Did the show go from taking place in the 1990’s  to moving back to the Jim Crow era?????

But Dan did have some racist leanings. Remember the ep where DJ didn't want to kiss Gina? Roseanne blamed Dan. I think he struggled with it. Like a lot of people with limited educations he was a product of provincialism. He knew it wasn't right but he was probably raised with some of that attitude and internalized it to some degree. I think most people have prejudices and I think it's something that should be discussed. I believe in what Barack Obama said in 2004.

Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America — there is the United States of America. There is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America — there’s the United States of America.

Archie was meant to be a buffoon; he was often laughed at, and his character was not meant to be sympathized with. When he made his racist and inflammatory remarks he usually faced foes (Mike, George, and Maude) who challenged him on his bigotry.  It's a false equivalency to compare him to Roseanne, and there's no way of making her look like a saint.

Plus, Archie's bigotry came from a place of ignorance and not pure hate. That was the nuance. He was always humbled through his life experiences, meeting and dealing with people that were different from him. For example: he made an assumption that Mike's friend was gay because he was an artist and had an eclectic style that could be misconstrued as being effeminate. Archie had to reevaluate that type of thinking, when the quarterback of his high school football team, told him that he was gay. Archie was shocked because he was not a person that Archie would believe to be gay. Archie learned and grew throughout the series.

It was really well done in that episode. Dan took a good look at himself, got some perspective in that hilariously awkward poker game with Chuckie (Did you invite me because DJ has to kiss black girl? Why's Bob here? DJ gotta kiss a DUMB girl-- no offense Bob.) and then he sat down and actually talked with DJ. He got to the bottom of what was bothering DJ and got him to realize we're all different in some way. He handled the situation, where Roseanne yelled at DJ and seemed more concerned that the teacher thought badly of her.

I agree with this, but I also think that referring to people as "illegals" isn't necessarily a sign of racism, but possibly from ignorance that it's offensive.  It seems closer to (usually older) people who never got the memo that Asians don't like being called "Oriental" anymore.  Like, my dad says "Oriental," and he's married to my Asian mom, so I really don't think it's from a place of racism.  I can totally imagine my dad saying "illegals."

I really wish we had gotten to see Bonnie and Leon. And learned the fate of The Lunchbox. I like to pretend Andy (and Fred!!) never happened. It’s weird they left Jerry out but I can forget he existed too.

I loved Fred! I thought it was interesting that Fred became "interesting" after he left Jackie. I had my own idea that Fred moved on, got remarried and then Andy decided to live with his dad instead of "wacky Jackie".

It would also be interesting to see Leon again, but would he be with Scott? (don't know if anybody remembers, but Fred Willard was arrested in 2012 for engaging in a "lewd act" - whatever that was).

And of course, seeing the missing Jerry would have been awesome. I always wondered if he would have looked like Dan or Roseanne.

I liked Fred, too.  His sense of humor was awesome, and I think he walked a fine and successful line in dealing with Jackie.  As in, he tolerated her for as long as he could, and then even long-suffering Fred could not take her any more.

The actor left the show to take a co-starring role on a short-lived ABC sitcom.  Roseanne made a reference to Fred's departure by saying something like, "Yeah, Fred married that assistant DA and they had three kids."  Which was supposed to explain how/why Fred left "Roseanne."  :o)

As for Jerry, I always thought Baby Jerry looked like Roseanne's husband at the time, Ben Thomas.  I was very surprised when I learned that Baby Jerry was NOT Baby Buck Thomas.  There was such a resemblance.

Scott was the probate lawyer Roseanne met when Dan died (whom she then introduced to Leon), according to the original series finale.  (We saw her meet him earlier than that, and he was already engaged to Leon when she did, so what we saw was the book version of Scott [and what we saw was the book version of Leon, when in reality he was a stodgy conservative].)  So, since it now turns out Dan didn't die, and the original series wasn't a book, I guess Scott doesn't actually exist.

I wonder how long before Roseanne mouths off, goes too far, and kills the show, or at least turns it into Roseanne’s Family.

I mentioned wishing they'd do a "Valerie to Hogan Family" move in the Roseanne Barr/Connor thread. I remember when that happened and it was a big deal. The mistake Valerie Harper made was thinking just because her name was the title of the show she would be indispensable...

I would be happy with The Conners as a show. They could kill Roseanne off (are they building any bridges in Landford these days?) and the show would be just fine.

Damn, you all called this! @peacheslatour even got the new name The Conners correct.

I kind of wish they'd call the reboot of the reboot "Lanford", and it'd be instead a soap opera parody on the order of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

No seriously though, it could work. The show towards the end of season 10/season 1 seemed to have some idea of what was working and what wasn't working.

About two months, as it turns out. You sure called that one (interesting what treasures lurk in old posts)!

Really impressive prediction, @Kokapetl.  Care to let us know who will win the World Cup?

Now there's a premonition that was time-stamped.  Even Tom Arnold's analysis of the cancellation controversy (that Roseanne meant to sabotage the whole thing from the beginning) was told after the fact.  Congrats KOKAPETL.
